The Next Level
Dear Reader,
Welcome to our new e-Zine! First and
foremost Natural Build Fitness Magazine is an
online/electronic publication dedicated to drugfree physique sports. We will cover the
“Natural Southern States Classic” and the “St.
Louis Gateway Naturals” competitions (and
maybe a few others) and those natural athletes
associated with it.
My wife and I have been promoters for the
North American Natural Bodybuilding
(nanbf.org) for eighteen years. We have seen
natural physique sports grow exponentially and
with it so have our competitions. In fact both
contests are among the largest natural shows
in the Heartland of our country. The NSSC, in
particular, is most likely one of the largest amateur natural drug-tested competition in the U.S.
We are very excited with this new addition
to our marketing program for our contests. This
publication will take us to the next level and
allow us to give our competitor’s much
deserved exposure throughout the midwest!
In each edition of the magazine there will
be competitor features on natural bodybuilding,
figure, bikini, and men’s physique, showcasing
some of our competitors. We will have guest
columnists, competition about our contests
(and others), and contest results. In addition,
we will have NANBF news, articles on contest
preparation, fitness and nutrition!
We also have advertising opportunities
available for those businesses that are trying
build their name in the industry.
We invite to you check out the advertisers
in this and future editions and where possible,
please help those who support a healthy, natural drug-free lifestyle!
This is our premiere edition (our first
issue), and we will be developing and expanding this publication over the next few issues for
the benefit of all. We genuinely welcome your
comments and suggestions, as this is just as
much your magazine, the reader, and it is also
our goal to help everyone to get fit and healthy!
Naturally,
John and Becky Arnold
NANBF Co-Promoters

Why Compete with the
NANBF/ OCB / IFPA?
WRITTEN BY JOHN ARNOLD
NANBF CO-PROMOTER
f you are a competitor that is searching for
an organization that is all about taking care
of their athletes you have found your home.
Our mission is to pre-screen all competitors for
banned substances therefore providing a fair
playing field. Without a policy of drug testing
and consistency at all NANBF/ OCB/ IPPA contests we are not protecting the reason why we
exist and why someone should compete with
us. This is how we separate ourselves from
other organizations and why you should feel
confident you are competing with like athletes.
Non-biased judging and no politics
involved in placings. The best way to destroy
I
that judge is confronted and if this continues
they are phased out of judging for us. This is
one of the biggest issues in the physique sport
game. Being as subjective as the sport is there
can be gray areas and ways to make it seem
there was a reason why a person placed lower
than they should to hide a political agenda.
You hear all the time about how you never
know what the judges are looking for. Well that
is just not true. There are specific objective
things we look for and always strive to place
competitors to what the ideal physique should
be or the total package. We have all the judging criteria for your reference at our website for

for athletes to compete in.”
your creditability and therefore your contests
are to allow tainting of scores. We do not
allow any politics for whatever agenda or pressures from trainers that send us competitors,
sponsors or anyone affiliated with a competitor.
This is policed in that if we see a pattern by a
judge or a score that is obviously one sided

you have to ask yourself, “Why compete if
there is no next level you can aspire to without
having to use drugs?”
We want all our competitors to feel that
they are rewarded for their body of work. We at
the NANBF/ OCB /IFPA want you the competitor to know that we that we are not here to just
make money but all of our promoters are or
have been in your shoes. We have a passion
to make our sport grow and are fans of our
competitors. We love to see them grow and
succeed. We the promoters are the steward’s
of natural physiques sports and if we are not
true to the competitor our contests will fail without their faith in knowing we are on their side.
Please join us in the drug free physique
lifestyle as thousands of other athletes have all
over the country. Competing at a NANBF/ OCB
/ IFPA contest is a celebration. Backstage the
atmosphere is always positive and electric. It is
always fun and everyone is very supportive. I
cannot tell you how addictive it is. How you finish sometimes does not even matter and all
you want is to do get back in the gym to
improve and do it again! So lets do it again!!

hat does this idea of bodybuilding mean
in the grand scheme of life? Why
donate so much time and energy into a
superficial endeavor based on how you look as
opposed to how you perform a given task? What
started as a comic book fantasy has grown into a
stable productive successful way of life.
The Incredible Hulk, The Terminator,
Rambo—those iconic fictional characters of old
planted the seeds of motivation to hit the weights
in my adolescent psyche as they probably did for
many of you reading this article. However, the
iron bug did not catch me until my college years
at the US Military Academy at West Point. I
joined the powerlifting team my junior and senior
years and twenty some odd years later I am still
at the gym. Through medical school, residency,
military deployments, marriage, and fatherhood,
working out has always been a constant factor.
However, how I perceive and utilize weight
training and diet has evolved over time. The
bodybuilder’s focus is muscularity and symmetry.
How you achieve this can involve a mixture of
other weight training/sports discipline: powerlifting, strongman competition, gymnastics, yoga,
ballet, football, wrestling, and track.
Bodybuilding is more than just about squats,
deadlifts, and bench numbers. A powerlifter is
basically locked into those three events with very
little wiggle room to branch out to other forms of
training over the long term. A body builder can
utilize unilateral exercises and bodyweight exercises require core strength, balance and activating muscles not used in their traditional, bilateral
counterparts. Rotating exercises allows greater
variety which can stimulate muscle growth.
Exercise rotation puts different stresses on the
body which can prevent overuse injury. Right
now I am using a football push sled called “The
Prowler” to strengthen my legs, condition my
heart, and drop body fat.
But the most important discipline is health
and nutrition. This determines how you look on
the outside AND inside. I did not commit to
competitive bodybuilding until I turned 40.
Between working with John Arnold of Natural
W
LT C D O U G L A S M AT H I S , M . D .
Build Fitness and reading the numerous articles
on the T-Nation (Testosterone Nation) website I
have significantly augmented my knowledge
about diet, training regimens, and exercise execution. Committing to natural bodybuilding
means keeping near contest shape all year round
which requires some discipline. If you work your
ass off ( literally) to get in contest shape eating
the best natural , unprocessed foods in the best
proportions, why go back to eating haphazardly.
It makes getting ready for the next contest that
much harder. Plus, my taste buds and body
have gotten used to the good stuff. I remember
eating a lot of pizza after one contest and I did
not feel well the day after. Cheating on my diet
means eating natural fruit (nature’s candy)
smoothies and natural nut butter which I can
make in my Vita-Mix blender. I can make a
chocolate, avocado, nut butter, and vegetable
smoothie that tastes great. And I don’t feel like I
am missing anything (except my fat ass). The
ancient Greek physician Hippocrates once said:
“Let food be thy medicine.” God has given us
plenty of natural and unprocessed food with
abundant nutrient value that we in the USA do
not take advantage of. The late fitness guru Jack
Lalane said, “If man made it, don’t eat it.” The
overconsumption of processed food (plus smoking) has burdened our health care system with
diabetes, hypertension, strokes, heart attacks,
cancer, and obesity. I practice what I preach.
And I preach a lot to family, friends, co-workers,
community and church members – anyone that
will listen.
When you talk the average person about
bodybuilding and body composition, it sounds
like an obsessive endeavor. When getting ready
for a contest it can be. But this is not just about
looking good . We as natural bodybuilders have
the ability to manipulate our hormones and anabolic processes to effect successful and graceful
aging , inside and outside , physically and mentally. This is truly remarkable.
Yes, I am a certified health nut and work out
fanatic. Now I have to go back to work at my
real job which pays the bills.

CLASSIC RESULTS & SNAPS

t is amazing how the contest started off Friday with
our ladies Figure Championships. The lineup
looked to be very competitive in that we had so
many people coming from fourteen states. They
were poised to go after the
multiple Pro Cards we are able
to give because of the sheer
numbers the NSSC continues
to field.
BEGINNER CLASSES staged
twenty six ladies for their
debut to the Figure sport.
Short Class had Brooke
Thompson taking the honors
with her petite but balance figure worthy of an Open
class competitor. Anne Rupert in second and Amie
Huster third. Tall saw statuesque Judi Glyn taking this
one for her first ever win in Figure. She followed this
up with taking on Brooke Thompson for the overall
and winning the overall. She has definitely a
physique that will take her far.

Novice with its thirty five competitors
turned out to be a barn burner. Amy Widmeyer
started Novice as the Short Class Champion
sporting a very nice symmetrical shape. She
also won our best Presentation Award of the
show for all class levels. Second went to previous Beginner Short winner in Brooke
Thompson and Amie Huster taking third.
Medium had Jesse Arduser taking the prize for
this class with here nice presentation and great
shape. Nicole Dudas taking second with Julie
Hamilton in third. Tall had Judi Glyn again winning her class with Kristina Hagen in Second
and Charla Dawson talking third. So the Overall
Novice was set with Amy Widmeyer, Jesse
Arduser and Judi Glyn going at it for the
Novice Overall win. It was Amy Widmeyer with
her very balanced physique taking the Gold as
the Novice Champion.
So on to see who would be crowned our
next Pro’s with the Open Women up next. With
our large numbers we were allowed to award
two this year. It all started with Diana Pitts taking out her class with Novice Overall Winner
Amy Widmeyer in second and Lisa Brattain in
third. Medium was one of the most competitive
with Stephanie Cassella winning this class,
Theresa Ruble in second and Nicole Dudas
taking home the third placement. Another
unbelievable class had Haley Cowan unseating
last years Tall class winner Angela Burke followed by Beginner Overall and Novice Tall
Champ Judi Glyn in Third. The Overall winner
turned out to be a very symmetrical Diana Pitts
and gaining her new Pro status against some
very tough customers. Stephanie Casella took
second in a very tight Overall battle winning
her Pro Card as well. Haley Cowan just missing
hers in third. There is no doubt that our 2013
NSSC Figure Posters are going to look beautiful with these ladies on them!
MASTERS 35+ had Diana Pitts taking this
Pro Card as well with Amy Widmeyer in second who also gained her 35+ Card because of
Pitts’s earlier Open win. Theresa Ruble taking
the third spot in this very tough class. It was a
very strong class this year with all these ladies
placing high in the Open level Classes. The
40+ Master’s Class had ladies that belied their
ages. Open quality physiques seeing Jeri Berg
in third place De’Andra Means second and with
Anne Rupert taking the Gold here.
The Natural Southern States Classic started another new Chapter for the NANBF adding
MEN’S PHYSIQUE to the show. So with much
anticipation we were hoping for a positive reaction by the spectators and competitors as well.
If what we heard it was a smash hit. The audience loved it. The competitors did as well and
we predict a huge turnout next year for this
new segment. We have been told by, “Upper
Management” that Pro Classes for this segment will be in place very soon.
BIKINI ADDED many more competitors this
year and Bodybuilding was up as well. The
audience enjoyed a very strong strong contingent of lady competitors, in all classes.
Starting it all off were our BIKINI DIVISIONS.
Open started the evening with four classes and
two pro Cards to be awarded. The Short class
went to Andrea D’Agosta with Jessica Laky on
her heels and Shanell Martinez in third. Medium
saw Jennifer Laws taking the class in a close
one to Philecia Markovich and Kerri Rathke taking Bronze. Medium Tall had Marisa Viestentz in
third, Tiffany Clements second and Amber
Herring winning this class. Tall went Loni
Molecek with Angela Cutler and Laura Sahaida
taking home third. So, we had Andrea D’Agosta,
Jennifer Laws, Amber Herring and Loni Molacek
going for the Pro Cards. Amber Herring with her
beautiful beach body symmetry and spot on
condition became our clear cut NSSC Open
Bikini Champion and new Pro. Andrea D’Agosta
with great presentation and condition taking
the second spot and garnering her a spot to go
Pro as well. Loni Molacek was awarded the
best presentation award out of the group as
well. 35+ Short went to Kerri Rathke and Tall to
Natalie Upp. Best friends from childhood they
had to go head to head for the 35+ Pro Card. It
was Kerri winning her Pro Status.

Next to the Stage was our new men’s
division, MEN’S PHYSIQUE. We were very
happy with only a few months to promote
our new class staging ten competitors in the
class for its debut for the NANBF. Laromy
Stratton bested a really strong group. He
was ripped and being the best conditioned
of the group it carried him the NANBF's
first Champion. Our Second place winner
Nick Bolton taking the show on short notice
is a national level competitor. He has competed for several years with other organizations. I spoke with on why decided to come
our way. He said it was our drug testing. He
knows there is definitely and element of
drug use in the other shows he has competed in. We are very excited to have him
become an ambassador for the NANBF! In
third it was Matt Carlin and the best presentation award went to him as well in his
debut in Men’s Physique.
Bodybuilding was up next with the MO
Physique. Don Brown winning the first
Bodybuilding class of the night. It was
Vince Cangelosi in second and Mario
Singlemann in third. For the Ladies Terre Kern
took the first place trophy in her best ever
shape.
Natural Southern States Classic PRO
QUALIFIERS CLASSES started with the Open
Women. First Card of the night for
Bodybuilding went to Christyn May with her
muscular, long and lean look. Charla Dawson
a crossover from the previous evening in
Figure taking second with her sculpted
wheels. Newcomer Jessica Harmon with her
nice muscle and good symmetry taking
third. Remember her name. Leaner and
she could become a Pro very soon. The
NSSC Open Men were on stage next. Short
had Vince Cangelosi with a much improved
physique this year taking the win. Veteran,
Brian Mauer, in his usual great shape took
the Silver and Andrew Terrell Bronze.

Medium saw Don Brown, the marathon runner,
taking this class with Anthony Wilkerson and
Mario Singlemann in second and third place.
Terry Starks in the Tall Class cast a huge
shadow with his awesome size for a tall competitor winning it handily. Shredded Joe Myers
took the second slot with 40+ Pro Paul
Williams Jr. in third. The Stage was set. Two
out of three would walk away with their Pro
Cards. It was a unanimous decision that
Terry Starks was our Overall Winner and new
Pro with Don Brown picking up his card in the
second spot. It was very gratifying to see
Terry finally get his card as it had taken him
several years to get it done. You could tell
that many people were pulling for him by the
roar of the crowd when he was named the
winner. Terry is probably one of the best Tall
competitors I have seen become a Pro. I predict you will see him make a huge impact in
the IFPA!
The Teen were up next with Kyle
Armstrong, son of IFPA Pro Rick Armstrong,
looking like a chip off his Dad’s block showing that great genetics are passed on. Kyle
took this class with Timothy Hicks and Elliot
Cordova second and third respectively.
Collegiate had Open winner Vincent Canglosi
taking home another first place trophy with
Logan McNeely in a close one in second
behind him. Cody Miranda taking third.
The Masters were up next. 35+ Women
went to Christyn May and in second Jessica
Harmon and Terre Kern taking third.
Submaster’s Men had Ethan Benda taking this
class Michael Accurso after a long layoff doing
well in second and NSSC veteran looking his
best ever John Brungardt taking the third spot.
Terry Starks coming back from his Overall
Open win easily winning the 40+ Masters as
well. Rock DeRochey received his Pro Card
P H O T O G R A P H Y

because Terry Starks had won the Open card
earlier. By adding muscle this year the” Rock”
deserved his card taking second and following him was Dexter Taylor in third. Master’s
Men saw Johnny Drake taking this one with
EffremWilliams in a close second and Wardell
Newsome taking third. 50+ Masters had
Timothy Kaniki taking this class of really good
competitors. Lee Clark took second and Phillip
Arnold taking third.
Novice Bodybuilding saw forty competitors battle for the Novice titles. Short Men
had Andrew Terrell after his high placing in
Open taking this class with Samath Sok second and Logan McNeely third. Medium saw
Teen sensation Kyle Armstrong winning the
Medium with an improved Matthew Beck second and Timothy Kanicki third. Carlos Rodriquez
with his dense muscle walked away with
Medium Tall. Tyler Russell took second and
Taylor Nelson third. Tall had Andrew Ziller winning his class with a game Justin Tyler pushing him and Jason Tyler taking third. So the
overall was set with Terrell, Armstrong,
Rodriquez and Ziller looking to win the
Novice Crown. In the end a very symmetrical
Andrew Terrell Stood tall with his Novice
Overall trophy.
Our great sponsor Dish Pizza in Liberty,
Missouri hosted our after party where the
competitors and judges shared their war stories. I would like to thank all my Judges and
stage crew for their hard long hours of work.

Diana Pitts was introduced to the world of
bodybuilding as a preteen, watching bodybuilding shows on ESPN, and admiring the muscular physiques of all the competitors on television. Diana said she was never very athletic in
school, despite her best efforts. Then, at the
age of 15, she convinced her parents to take
her to the local gym to workout, but it was a
very hardcore gym, and was primarily filled
with male bodybuilders and it wasn't a compatible environment for a 15 year old girl to be in.
By the time Diana graduated high school,
another gym had opened up near their home,
but the new gym was very family friendly.
"I begged my parents to let me join," said
Diana, "and I started going to that gym on a

hard at keeping it in shape."
After seven years of marriage they decided to try to have a baby, and they were
blessed with a baby boy.
"I was scared to death of the changes to
come," admits Diana. "I exercised all the way
through my first pregnancy (with some modifications as my bell grew). I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly my body weight went
back to normal."
Then, four years later the stork delivered
another bouncing baby boy.
"I was 34 then," she said, "and the weight
didn't come off as easily as after the first pregnancy. I was discouraged. I thought to myself,
'Is this normal?' But, I kept working out regular-

regular basis and within two months I saw
major changes in my physique. I had never
been so excited, I found my niche," she added.
From that point forward, she knew she
wanted to be a regular at the gym for as long
as her body would let her.
"The idea of bodybuilding was always, I
thought, to be something unattainable for
myself," she admitted, "I never thought I could
diet or get a deep dark tan that was required. I
continued to admire bodybuilders in magazines
and never gave it much further thought."
DIANA'S PREGNANCIES
Diana met her husband (of 15 years)
when she was 21. They got married and at the
time they had no plans to have children.
"Neither one us had an interest at the
time," Diana said, "nor was there any way that
I was going to do that to my body. I worked too
ly as I always had, and slowly the weight started to come back off."
THE NEXT STEP
It wasn't until one day when Diana was
picking up their two sons from the babysitting
area at the gym when one of the other moms
that was there picked up a flyer for a bodybuilding contest and handed it to her and said,
"You should do this."
"I kind of laughed at her and said "I'm too
old for that stuff.'" said Diana.
The other mom persisted "I'm serious, you
would do well in the figure category with your
physique."
Diana went home that day, flyer in hand
and started to think about doing a competition.
Instead of thinking she couldn't do a competition, she changed her mindset to thinking that

it was time to challenge herself and see what
she could do.
Diana competed in her first competition in
the Spring of 2010.
"It was rough," admitted Diana. "I had to
find a way to balance meal planning, strength
training, card, a full-time job, family activities,
and sleep. I had no idea how challenging it
was going to be."
She said that diet alone was difficult and
emotionally draining.
"I'm sure that you are wondering why I
didn't just quite? questioned Diana. " I was just
too proud to quit and I wanted to see what I

In Diana's pursuit to become the best she
could be in her sport, she found tat friends and
coworkers started to approach her with questions on nutrition and training.
"It's so rewarding to know that they are
taking on some of my eating habits, nutritional
values and strength training advice to better
their lives," she said. "I have expanded my
career as a nurse far beyond my hospital bedside. I am taking my nursing career along with
what I have learned about nutrition and fitness
out in pursuit to help educate families in my
community, and especially in the fight to combat the obesity epidemic that now plagues our

could do! I told everyone that I was going to do
a competition just this one time and then I
could say that I did it."
Well, after her first competition, she felt so
accomplished that she had conquered her
stage freight and that she was able to take her
body to the next level that she never thought
she could do. From that point on she realized
that she had no excuses, that there was no
reason she couldn't be as fit as she wanted to
be.
Diana then made it a point to educate herself on nutrition and the value of nutrition. She
knew that she truly did not yet appreciate just
how important nutrition was and how eating
could maximize the positive results in the gym
or in any sport that someone would train so
hard for.
"Just by consistently increasing my daily
protein intake and learning what foods are

This past Spring, Diana volunteered her
knowledge and excitement at her son's elementary school program entitled "Food Power."
The State of Missouri paired up with the
University of Missouri to present the Food
Power, an interactive program geared towards
kids. Food Power is a fun kindergarten through
5th grade program that teaches the importance
of healthy eating and physical activity in an
exciting and interactive way. This Fall Diana
will also be providing educational articles
regarding health and wellness in the elementary school electronic newsletter.

test in 2011. The first competition she competed in
was the St. Louis INBF show in early April, for
which she entered in the open figure pro-qualifier
division and she placed second in the open short
pro-qualifier division. Encouraged by her results in
St. Louis after narrowly missing earthing her pro
card at the INBF show, she immediately signed
up for the Natural Southern States Classic in
Liberty, MO which was two weeks later.
"About a week before the Natural Southern
States Classic competition I ran into a friend at the
gym," recalls Diana, " She was a bikini competitor
and I told her of my plans to compete in the
Liberty contest. Her response was 'Oh yah, that's
a really big show for figure.' I really had no idea
the magnitude of the competition I would be facing at the Southern States Classic."
"Then I started to wonder if I had made a
mistake. Was I crazy for even thinking I had a

chance at such a huge show? Well, it was too
late to change plans now, so I just hoped for the
best and “took the bull by the horns,” added
Diana.
The big day finally came (on April 15). She
had entered both figure open and figure masters,
both pro-qualifiers. Diana ended up placing third
in the figure short/medium division and a very
respectable second in the figure masters. She
reviewed photographs of herself and studied the
judges comments on her judging sheets and
decided that she still needed a little more help.
" All this time I had sought out little guidance
for my training. For the most part, I had someone
guiding me with my diet and not much more than
that."
Diana decided to spend some time attending
other competitions and set in the audience and
see what she could learn. She watched to see

"I seemed to find one common denominator in these girls that won. It was their trainer.
This trainer’s girls consistently did well show

either; different girls, different shows. I finally
decided to swallow my pride, and seek her out.
Debbie Portell and I started training together in

potential for my spring shows."
Diana competed in a show in March 2012
and won the figure masters overall and placed
second in her height class for figure open, but
the show was not a national pro-qualifier and
no pro card qualifications were granted.
Next up for challenges for Diana was the

no way I can truly prepare for those who are
competing with me on stage and there’s no
guarantee how the judging will turn out. I can

In“VINCE”able
Cangelosi!
When Vince Cangelosi was a kid he remembers looking at his father's muscle
magazines and wondering how in the heck those guys got those bodies.
"I couldn't wait to start working out, " said Vince. " As soon as I was old enough,
my pop introduced me to weight lifting. We worked out in our garage for a few
years."
Then, in junior high school, Vince began taking weight training classes and he
continued to take classes through all four years of high school.
"I was pretty average size in school," he admits, "but I always busted my butt in
the weight room."
After high school Vince got a gym membership to a local Anytime Fitness, but
he started to slack off of his workout routines.
"I started to party and drink more with my friends and started to live an
unhealthy lifestyle." said Vince. "I decide to do something about it, and I realized that
only I was in control of my own destiny and I made some serious changes and I
have never looked back."
Vince and a friend were working out at the gym one day when a personal trainer approached them as asked if they would be interested in competing in a
natural bodybuilding competition.
"We thought it would sound awesome so we said yes," exclaimed Vince, "
and picked the Natural Southern States Classic (2010) as our first bodybuilding contest."
Though the competition was yet a year away, Vince went to work bulking up
before he had to start dieting. Working out and eating healthy became my
new life. Vince began to learn that a lot goes into preparing for a bodybuilding
contest, a lot more than he thought.
"I soon realized bodybuilding is different from any other sport, it really is a
lifestyle change. I ate, slept and dreamed bodybuilding," he stated.
With months of research and posing practice Vince was ready to compete in
his first show (the Natural Southern States Classic). He earned 1st place in
the novice short division and 3rd place in the Natural Missouri open division.
" I was hooked instantly!" Vince said excitedly.
His next competition he headed to St. Louis for the Gateway Naturals where
he placed 4th in the open division. It was after this contest that Vince, at 5'6'
tall and 155 pounds on stage, decided that he really needed to add some
muscle mass to his frame and Vince set a goal of 170 pounds for his contest
weight.

After a lot of hard work, and two years later
he decided to compete in the 2012 Natural
Southern States Classic. His determination and
hard work really paid off as he earned 1st place
in the collegiate division, 1st in open and 2nd in
the Natural Missouri open division.
"I knew going into the NSSC, that no matter
what the outcome was going to be, that I already
thought of myself as a winner," explained Vince.
"I looked the best I have ever looked."
Vince said that he always dreamed of
becoming a natural professional bodybuilder,
and he believes that he will yet accomplish that.
"I will push myself beyond what I thought
was capable and I will be a force coming, I can
guarantee that. I admire anybody else that has
the same mentality of pushing your body to live
a happy and healthy life, and hope that the people that don’t have the motivation to not give up,
not be a quitter and turn your life around and live
life as its meant to be."
When training with weights, Vince's goal is to work both fiber types as much as possible.
Activating both muscle fibers means more gains in strength and muscle mass. Depending on the
activity that is taking place, determines what muscle fibers they are using. For example, sprinters
and power lifter will use fast twitch fibers for explosive movements. Marathon runners will use slow
twitch fibers for the endurance they will need to perform for a long period of time. If the same resistance training is done every time, then only the same muscle fibers are used. To maximize their
potential for muscle size and strength, I believe training each muscle fiber equally is important.
Muscles are made for speed, strength and endurance. Train them that way. Vince's theory is
that by training a muscle the way Mother Nature intended for it to be used, muscle growth that otherwise might not have achieved will be accomplished.
He has had great progress in working them this way. This is the guideline Vince sticks to for
each body part.
This is the plan that Vince said he has stuck to for a few
years now and believe in it 100%. It forces you to use
the different muscle fibers,
making growth faster and better than ever.

Amber Herring was introduced to the

Her uncle trained her in a "workout barn"
that was at her grandmother's home.
"Uncle Terry moved after that, but I continued my weight training classes at school," add
Kelsey, who is an OKC Thunder Girl, invited
her to boot camp at Transformation Fitness
Center in Edmond, OK. There, she met Steve
Clausen with One Healthy Bod and she
learned that there were bikini competitions that
she would be able to compete in.
"I was excited and immediately knew this
was what I wanted to do!" exclaimed Herring.
Her first competition was on September
21, in the 2011 Natural KC Classic in Overland
Park, KS.
“I was excited and immediately
knew this is what I wanted to do!”
Amber. "During my senior year in high school I
joined Body Tech, a local gym, where I began
to learn and understand nutrition and cardio
exercise."
At this point, Amber knew that she wanted
to be a part of the fitness world. But, she had
concerns that she would be all bulked up.
Unsure of what she do at that point, she continued her lifting and strength training.
She added card to the mix and began running with her mother. It was then that she
decided to participate in the 2011 Oklahoma
City Memorial Half Marathon.
After the half marathon, a friend named
"I placed a disappointing 5th, but I learned
I was too lean and that there is a fine line
between just right and too lean," she commented.
Amber learned a lot from participating in
her first contest.
" I also learned that YES the bikini matters. My suit showed too much cleavage," she
shared. "Some things you can’t change so you
work around them."
Amber went back to work on her body,
taking with her the experience and her new
found information.

" I continued to workout and gather my
thoughts," said Herring, " I decided I was going
to compete again and I know I had to make a
few changes.
The first change she made was the style
and color of her bikini. Her new bikini worked
with her body, not against it.
"Another change I made was to my diet,"
added AMber. "I switched my lean protein and
added a few more carbs to keep from crossing
the fine line into too lean."
Herring also felt like she needed some
more calmness to help her reach her goals.
"I added a meditation time before the competition," she said. "It kept me calm and
allowed me to have 'fun' with the competition."
And, apparently the mediation worked. In
fact, it all worked for her. She entered the 2012
Natural Southern States Classic in Liberty, MO.

AMBER HERRING, BIKINI
" I was so calm I blew the judges a kiss in
my T-walk," said an excited Herring. "When my
number was announced as winner of the bikini
medium/tall division, my first thought was 'Hey
I’m number 46!'
Amber was then competing in the bikini
finals for the overall and a pro figure card.
"The pose off for overall was the most
anxious I had been all day," Herring admitted.
"I was afraid to take my eyes off the judges, so
when they started handing out places I had no
idea who was getting what because i didn't
even have a chance to see the other competitor's."
Amber's number was called and she won
the Natural Southern States Classic 2012

"When they announced second I finally

felt like I was floating on a cloud!"

Nick Bolton is a man of many careers. He
is a a full-time firefighter, personal trainer, and
fitness model. Nick has been actively involved
in fitness for more than14 years.
In the fall of 2010, Bolton decided that he
would push his body to the very limit and step
on the fitness stage as a physique competitor.
"I looked at this as an opportunity to learn
more about nutrition and contest preparation,
in order to help serve my clients better," stated
Nick. " Once I stepped on stage for the first
Nick quickly discovered the difference
between natural and not natural.
"One very big distinction that caught my
attention was the fact that some organizations
were actually natural while others were “untested,” he stated. "The natural competitions leveled the playing field for me since I compete as
a life-long natural athlete. Nearly all of the
competitions I entered I found myself as one of
only a few completely natural competitors. I
never shied away from the challenge of beat-

time, I knew I was hooked."
Competing gave Nick a chance to refocus
and set new goals for himself. It allowed him to
get dialed in for more intense workouts, producing even more results.
"The rush of stepping on stage and knowing you're bringing your best every time is
addicting," admitted Bolton. " As soon as the
men’s physique divisions began appearing, I
found my opportunity to compete once again.
I knew this was a new division and as different

be different interpretations as to how it should

ing the competitors that used illegal and
banned substances but there always seemed
to be a disadvantage."
Nick decided to focus on training harder
and eating cleaner in order to stand on that
stage. He followed his first competition up with
placing 2nd in the physique division, and then
one week later placed in the top 10 of the fitness models at another contest.
In August of 2011, he placed 3rd in a show
in St. Louis, and then competed in Las Vegas,
placing in the top 10 in his class of models.
In 2012, Nick learned of the NANBF finally

"The NANBF has a long and reputable
history - it's an organization Bolton didn't mind
standing behind," stated Nick. "I was very interested in the drug tested and polygraphed
approach to controlling performance enhancing
drugs. I have been a very strong advocate in

TRAINING
Nick's combination of occupations creates
a need to be creative with balancing job
requirements and contest preparation.
Because of the nature of a fitness model, he
needs to stay photo shoot-ready year round –
There is no “off season”.

results were very favorable as Nick earned 2nd

Recently Nick stepped into the biggest
show of his career in Miami, FL, where he
squared off against 60 international fitness
models and finished in a three way tie for 3rd
place (tie breaker moved me to 5th).
"Being a top 5 finished against some of
the best fitness models from all over the world
has opened up new opportunities," said Nick.
Since the end of last season, he has been
busy preparing for what's to come.
MRI/Prolab has been supporting Bolton and
allowed him to represent their brand.
"It has been an honor representing such a
reputable company and I look forward to continuing that partnership as I prepare for bigger
and better competitions," he stated. "I'll be
working on shooting with national fitness mag-
ing, training, and sleeping. My schedule as a
firefighter can be unpredictable and relatively
high stress."
Sleeping is a luxury, not an expectation
while at the firehouse. Every day on shift,
Bolton has to be ready for any emergency that
may occur. He cannot workout to exhaustion
and often he said that his workout gets interrupted.
"My meals depend on emergency call volume. I need to be ready at any minute to fight
extreme conditions for rescue operations," continued Nick. "These are only a few of the variable firefighters have to deal with on a day to
day basis. Because of these unique circumstances, I’m forced to train smart and train

add to his symmetry. He incorporate a combination of techniques including drop sets, super

in the firehouse, Nick uses fire equipment (ladders, fire hose, air pack, stairs, fire truck, etc.)
in functional training. Staying creative with his
workouts helps him to avoid any possible
plateaus.
NUTRITION
With each show, Nick feels that his training
improves. He said that his diet tightens, his
workouts are better, and his focus is clearer.
"I use a clean style of bulking which is basically consuming carbs when my muscles can
process appropriately," he said. "My carb meals
come mainly for breakfast and post workout.
This allows my muscles to be filled with the
carbs and less chance of spill over. I also use a
variety of supplements from MRI (Medical
Research Institute)."
Bolton's protein, amino acids, creatine, and
pre workout supplement his clean diet. His
carbs mainly consist of complex carbs and Nick
consumes lean meat and vegetables every 2-3
hours.
"I train heavy all the way to competition and
hit every muscle group 1-2 times per week,"
shared Nick. "The muscles I'm trying to bring up
to speed will be worked 2 times per week.
Cardio is minimal as I focus on intense training
and proper nutrition."
"Firefighting, personal training, and competing has kept me very focused and driven when it
comes to living a healthy life," Nick admitted. "
I'm doing it for many reasons, all of which make
me better at each of my professions. Especially
in firefighting, I never want to sacrifice saving a
life because I was not physically strong enough
or couldn't physically help. I have the opportunity to affect and even impact people's lives.
Balancing so much keeps me busy but just like I
tell people; I have the best jobs in the world."

Truth About Contest
Diet “Hocus Pocus”
WRITTEN BY JOHN ARNOLD
NANBF CO-PROMOTER
here is so much information out there for
physique athletes in regard to the latest
and greatest diet for contest’s it will make
your head spin. One thing that is certain however is timing and where your percentage of body
fat should be at your onset of the contest diet.
This will determine where you will be the day of
the contest and how much muscle mass you
retain. It is best to be at 8-10% for Bodybuilding
men or Men’s Physique. Women Bodybuilders

to drop as much body fat as do bodybuilders.
Bikini is a whole new animal. Really they should
diet like a Figure women but really back off the
dieting as soon as the see that they get a hint of
ab leanness. Good indicator. These women
should however not get any higher in body fat as
describe in the off season as well. The offseason
is really more important as to get you setup for
the cutting or contest diet.

should be at 13% or less 12-14 weeks out. To
make sure and to give you some buffer time so
if you have a period that you hit a wall with fat
loss and need a week or so to sort this out it
really is safer to ad at least two weeks more for
prep. Especially if you are a rookie and or working with a new diet or trainer you should consider more time. This way you can do the diet and
gradually lean up. If you find yourself behind at
four weeks out this is the only time you should
reduce calories or do a semi crash diet. Figure
and Bikini competitors, if they are on track, can
actually stop the cutting phase and go into more
of a maintenance phase since they do not have

most of the time. The reason this happens is
that when you go so far into calorie deficits and
too low in fat you are essentially into KetoAcidosis. This is where the body uses lean tissue for energy. This means everything, including
the major organs. If you have ever seen pictures
of the holocaust victims their muscularity is
gone. Their bodies, being that they have no fuel
to run on, cannibalizes itself. Of course this is
contrary to what any physique sport competitor
wants. Therefore you must view your food as the
fuel that sculpts the muscle you need to fix any
imbalance or weaknesses your physique may

GLUTEN-FREE SEED HOT CEREAL
Combine 1 cup each of quinoa seeds, millet
seeds, teff seeds, and amarnth seeds in a covered container. Shake around to mix up evenly.
Use 1\4 cup of seed mixture to equal 1 cup
of cooked cereal. (store the rest of the seeds in
freezer in a container or baggie)
Put 1\4 cup of seeds in with 1.5 cups of
water-bring to a boil then simmer for 15 to 20
minutes. Keep a close watch on so that water
does not simmer out. Quinoa seeds will open
when done.
Cereal is ready to eat. Add cinnamon if you
like. Depending on your diet you may want to
add fruit and\or nuts.
NUTRITIONAL VALUES
(for cereal without adding anything)

1 scoop of NNW vanilla protein powder
(sold at Hy-Vee health food department)
2 whole eggs
1\2 cup of egg whites
Cinnamon to taste
Blend for about 1 minute on low
Heat 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil in small frying

I also will make these without the seeds when
not eating carbs.
