These initiatives not only secure the financial viability of our Club but also reinvigorate the values we represent. Let me share just a few of these with you. I am pleased to report that the Committee along with the Marina Company have finalised negotiations with TMR. The Marina Company holds the head lease and now has the bonus extension of 10 years on all leases, which takes it out to 2044. This is a fabulous result that only strengthens the long term value and desirability of marina berths. Since September last year 22 marina berths have been sold – NOW is really a great time to own your own berth! Our thanks to the Marina Company Directors for their continued support. We are very proud to report that our partnership with Camp Quality has been a huge success. To date we have raised a much needed $10,000 that goes toward creating a better quality of life for children and their families living with cancer. Of course we need the continued generous support of our Members and patrons to keep making a difference for the children and families of Camp Quality. So I look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming Camp Quality events. The next event will be the MBTBC Kids Christmas Party – 30th November – 2pm – 5pm. Check our ‘new look’ website www.mbtbc.com for up to date information on the Camp Quality Events and what’s happening at MBTBC. Volunteers are always welcome to help sell raffle tickets and to support the Club and in other ways such as sponsorship, even offering your services or products. Just contact Samantha, myself or any member of Committee. We would love to chat with you. We have brought back live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights with some great first class entertainers and bands. So make sure you book a night wining, dining and dancing with your friends and family over the coming weekends as the festive season kicks into gear. It’s great to see our sensational staff rise to the occasion supporting the Committee’s initiatives, spirits are high, service and food has never been better – we thank them all and as a Committee couldn’t be more proud of them. We plan to develop strong levels of member support and encourage future leadership that will drive the MBTBC to re-establish itself as a leading Boat Club and Marina. Now it’s Members’ turn – now more than ever before we need our Members to support our staff, your Clubhouse and these new initiatives. Our Club Captain, Bob Gillmore is planning on a sub group get together/ BBQ in February and will be in touch in due course with more details. Also, please note in your diary that the next General Meeting will be on Monday 2nd February and the Brisbane Tinnie & Tackle Show will be coming to Manly on 6th March (more details on page 24). The Committee remains dedicated to keeping communication open with our Members and how you would like to see the Clubhouse continue to grow. As a result we have introduced Feedback Forms at the Bar, we’d love to hear all about your experience and encourage Members to complete these – don’t forget to nominate your favourite staff member or meal! Thanks to your continued support, a dedicated Committee and loyal staff I am confident in saying that at last we can look forward to fair seas and light winds in the years to come. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you enjoying your Clubhouse very soon! P.S. This is just the first look at many exciting initiatives we are introducing, watch this space! The Club hosted over 200 visitors who were treated to entertainment, giant games, a jumping castle, face painting and gorgeous food. Fifty per cent of all food sales was donated to Camp Quality and the Club held a raffle to raise funds. Camp Quality supports thousands of children and their families living with cancer in Australia. MBTBC Commodore Ann Sheriff says she is proud for MBTBC to support such a worthy cause. “As a cancer survivor myself I know all too well what these children have to go through. The whole process is hard on them and their families. “Currently Camp Quality reaches 1 in 3 children living with cancer. We want to help Camp Quality reach EVERY child living with cancer.” In Queensland alone, from Brisbane to Cairns, Gold Coast to Mt Isa, Camp Quality supports over 594 families. From diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond, their free programs build optimism and resilience at hospital, at home, at school and at camp. Charity partners can bring huge benefits. With the help of partners Camp Quality was able to accomplish some great things last year including: supporting 340 new families, running over 300 recreation programs, and reaching over 300,000 children and teenagers with their performance and education program. Since the launch of the partnership the Club has hosted a Fashion Show, Christmas in July and regular events to raise funds and awareness. We are proud to announce that so far MBTBC has raised over $10,000 so far for Camp Quality. Camp Quality events are held every month at the MBTBC Clubhouse. Please see 8 T R A I L E R B O AT I N G CAMP QUALITY www.mbtbc.com or the MBTBC Facebook page for details. If you would like to get involved in fundraising please register your interest at [email protected]. To read more about Camp Quality, please visit: www.campquality.org.au. Thank you to everyone who has supported and helped us. Let’s keep going into 2015! SECTION NAME Returning to school is often a frightening time for a child living with cancer. Sophie’s Story After cancer treatment, Sophie was very anxious about returning to school. Unfortunately, her fears were well-founded. Sophie’s mum says: “Sophie had a lot of trouble from some of the kids. Some of the younger ones called her ‘baldy’, and the other children were worried they were going to ‘catch’ what Sophie had.” Luckily, the Camp Quality puppets gave Sophie’s school a visit as part of our Primary School Education Program. It teaches pupils how to be supportive and understanding of kids living with cancer. After cancer treatment has robbed them of their hair and confidence, the show is crucial in reassuring kids who are anxious about returning to school. They’re often bullied or excluded because other kids don’t understand that they can’t catch cancer. We know the show works wonders: as 7-year-old Sophie wrote: “After the puppets explained leukaemia, the kids at school stopped bullying me.” Help Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club support kids like Sophie Find out more at: 1 0 U N I V E R S A L M A G A Z I N E M A R C H 2 0 11 campquality.org.au SECTION NAME When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family is effected Emily’s Story Four-year-old Emily was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in July 2013. The impact her diagnosis had on her wider family – mum, dad and two siblings – threaten to overwhelm them. Mum Jen says: “We didn’t even know children got cancer in July last year. I’d never heard of a child getting cancer. It hit me like a tonne of bricks. I collapsed on the ground and knocked my head on the wall.” Jen had to abandon a business she’d just started and her husband had to take months off work to care for their other children. Learning to remain positive, resilient and optimistic was something the family learnt at Camp Quality’s programs: “Firstly, everyone’s dealing with cancer so it’s not a scary environment and you no longer feel so alone. Also, they take care of the whole family. It’s made us closer, determined and unstoppable as a family. We’re more appreciative of life every day because we know of people who don’t have their children any more.” Help Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club support kids like Emily Find out more at: campquality.org.au M A R C H 2 0 1 1 U N I V E R S A L M A G A Z I N E 1 1 S E A F O O D A N D S O U L - S AT U R D AY N I G H T Music and food to feed your soul The Elliotts: Living the Impossible Dream Music and food combined to excellent effect again this August 9th and 10th with MBTBC’s Seafood and Soul festival. Words and pictures, Michelle McKenna Regular attendees may have noticed the slight twist in the title of this year’s event. Past years have focused on jazz but this year we got funky. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes soul as “music that arose in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying”. While we can’t claim attendees had a religious experience – it was an awesome weekend of fine food, drink and tunes. Saturday, August 9: The Elliotts and Dennis Jaculli Armed with children, husband, spare babysitter - ahem - friend and blankets I wandered down to the Club on Saturday afternoon. Arriving early to ensure maximum consumption of prawns and bugs was possible we got stuck into the food which was, as always, delicious. When the music started up I had a “Hell YEAH!” moment. You know that moment when you know you’re hearing something AWESOME? Totally tight, original music played from the heart. Completely unexpected and completely beautiful. The harmonies The Elliotts create are just divine, wistful and moving. Songs like Impossible Dream and Favourite Place float along, relaxing the mind like hearing flowing water. Stay for the Night and Warriors rocked the joint and warmed up the chilly August air. I was so excited I bought a beanie and a CD. The CD has not left my car since - no matter how stressful my morning, as soon as the soothing notes of Favourite Place waft over me, I’m good. I recommend this CD to any fellow stressheads who need some mellowing out of a morning. Unfortunately I was only able to catch the first couple of songs of Dennis Jaculli’s set as it was my turn to go home first with the kids, but the husband and the friend (who turned out to be not very useful as a spare babysitter) stayed to relax, consume copious amounts of beer and enjoy the show. 12 T R A I L E R B O AT I N G S E A F O O D A N D S O U L - S AT U R D AY N I G H T SATURDAY BAND BIOS: THE ELLIOTTS www.elliottsband.com Proving that MBTBC can attract the hottest talent ,TRIPLE J UNEARTHED Melbourne band The Elliotts added us into their national tour. The Elliotts are an Australian indie rock trio consisting of singer/songwriter/guitarist (and all-round overachiever) Robbie Elliott, James Howlett on bass and Max Missingham on drums and vocals. Uniting under a love of harmonies and a mutual dislike for what is currently on commercial radio, ‘The Elliotts’ have honed their craft; collaborating with music producer Pete Dacy (Taxiride, The Androids,Superjesus) and artists such as Brian Canham (Pseudo Echo). The Elliotts’ music has been compared to hybrid of The Beatles, The Killers, Oasis and Queen. DENNIS JACULLI www.jaculli.com Having grown up with eclectic sounds and melodies, Dennis Jaculli has developed into a self-styled artist. As the front man for “Comotosed”, playing before crowds throughout Queensland in venues such as “the Zoo”, “Hi-Fi” and “Rosies”, Dennis brought his energetic and explosive, yet soulful stage presence to the shows every night. After moving to Europe, and playing several shows in England he displayed his own unique style, to which gained great responses across the pond. Now Dennis has decided to bare and share his musical soul with his new solo project. Weaving and creating his individual acoustic sound he found on his travels, accompanied with his raw, hypnotic voice and entrancing thoughtful lyrics. Dennis Jaculli is set to show why his talent must be heard. T R A I L E R B O AT I N G 1 3 SEAFOOD AND SOUL - SUNDAY 14 T R A I L E R B O AT I N G SEAFOOD AND SOUL - SUNDAY Sunday, August 10: Nuages and JACKPOT As usual, Sunday was sold out and the weather was sunny and warm. Eager to try more seafood we opted for more bugs, oysters and yet more prawns. Again - they were succulent and delicious. What a way to spend a weekend, lying around scoffing and being entertained al fresco. Beauty. The music was more upbeat than the night before and everyone was getting very into the groove, dancing, toe tapping and cutting loose. The kids were loving the tunes and the food - it’s such a pleasure to be able to relax with them in a safe, waterfront environment. There aren’t many events like this where everyone is so laid back and welcoming to families. All the kids got balloons, had their faces painted and generally treated like little VIPS. If you haven’t made it to a Seafood by the Bay at the Club yet, lock it in for next year. I really can’t rate it highly enough, MBTBC have made an art out of entertaining and this event gets 10/10 from me. See you next year - and remember to keep an eye on the Club newsletter for upcoming events. SUNDAY BAND BIOS: Nuages supply smooth, familiar tunes played and sung beautifully. JACKPOT are Peter, Paul and Annie. Peter sings better than Barnsie! Annie rocks like Tina Turner and plays drums! Paulie plays like Clapton! All together, you’ve won the JACKPOT. This is very welcome as the group needs more active small boat fishermen and women. If you are a member of the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club and are interested in a monthly fishing outing then you are most welcome to join the Group. The IFG has a monthly meeting at the Club at 7.30 pm on the first Thursday of every month. The Group endeavours to have one fishing trip every month. The trips are normally within Moreton Bay or from the Club’s Southern Haven. We also have annual fishing weekend in the fresh water of Somerset Dam Unfortunately the fish being presented at the group’s weigh-ins has not matched the increase in membership numbers. Members keeping telling me of all the big ones they caught during the week and all the one’s that got away during the Group’s weekend fishing trips. In April the IFG fished Moreton Bay with 5 boats turning out in good weather. In May the group travelled to Borumba Dam and Saratoga provided good fishing activity. Very few Bass were caught. Also in May some members assisted at a working Bee at the Club’s Southern Haven. Many thanks to those that attended. Some help is much appreciated. In June the IFG spent the long weekend at the Southern Haven. 6 boats stayed for most the weekend in very windy conditions. Whilst we fished the surf beach and the estuary, the main catch was Mud and Sand crabs. Who said the month has to have an “r” in it to catch crabs. The July trip to Peel Island was cancelled when the weather conditions exceed the group’s safety limits for two weekends in a row. In August the IFG spent a very pleasant Sunday fishing Harry Atkinsons and the Rous Channel. The Groups forward programme for the balance of 2014 is a planned a trip on December 7th – Brisbane River For more information on the Inshore Fishing Group please contact the group Captain John Haynes. We are a group of all ages and backgrounds who share one thing in common, the love of being out on the water and having fun with likeminded people. It doesn’t matter what size boat you own, currently boats range from 17 to 43 foot, both power and sail. Many of us like to add fishing and crabbing to our trips though our emphasis is more on the social side rather than the catching, though we do get excited when a fish is caught. There have been several trips and events which the Social Cruise group took part in during the year such as: Little Ship Club – New Year’s Eve (unofficial outing) All arrived at different times during the day on New Year’s Eve. Crab pots had been set hoping for a bumper catch. Crystal bought over Deb & Jan’s 2 kayaks as well as their new toys 2 SUPs. We had fun having turns on them during the afternoon. Unfortunately we were unable to blow up the SUPs to the required PSI so only Deb could comfortably stand up. Arthur & Darryl were every good on their knees although it took Darryl awhile for his knees to recover. Shelly and Jan R ventured out on the kayaks. Ilka headed off on a kayak at an Olympic pace and Andreas caught up to her with a little help from Anthony and his new tender. We all met for Sundowners on Crystal, followed by dinner at the club, there was band playing so there was some dancing and lots of fun chatting the night away. Celebrated midnight and ended the night with a night cap on Crystal. We all got up pretty good in the morning, no bad hangovers. Arthur & Deb went out to check their crab pots and returned safely. After breakfast we saw Black Solace off and then caught the bus to Point Lookout. First we headed for Main Beach and we could see the smoke at the south end on the beach. During our walk along the boardwalk we saw kangaroos, turtles & a few pods of dolphins. We stopped at the ice cream shop for 3 scoops of gelato. After several more beaches we returned to LSC for a bit more kayaking. Anthony did some fishing from his tender and caught himself a great flathead. More Sundowners, dinner at club and as we were all tried we went to bed early. It was windy today so we when went for a walk into Dunwich and watched the car ferries come in, there were a lot of campers leaving the island due to the fire. We went into the shops and found out there was a blackout. Returning to LSC we found out the whole island had loss power. The smoke from the fire was blowing towards Dunwich and could now be seen from LSC. The helicopter with the water bucket had been in use all day and TV helicopters had been flying pass a few times. We had lunch on Crystal and in the afternoon Arthur & Deb kayaked while Jan G ferried Jan R & friends in the tender to the wrecks. When we got back to LSC the power was still out and we could not get into the showers due to the no power and was advised LSC was closing at 6.30 with no meals available for 32 T R A I L E R B O AT I N G SOCIAL CRUISE dinner. Luckily we always bring too much food and had extended sundowners on Crystal. After the sun set the fire appeared to draw closer with an eerie red haze in the sky. We had to take the torch to the toilets. When we awoke the next morning the power had returned due to a couple of large generator trucks. The total was 9 crabs caught. After BBQ breakfast we headed back to Manly via Horseshoe Bay. A great time was had by all. Southern Haven – Australia Day long weekend Saturday 25 to Monday 27 January 2014 Seas Loiter arrived at Southern Haven on Friday just before lunch to be greeted by John & Jan and Jan & Arthur who had all arrived on Thursday making a super long weekend. Arthur as usual had set his crab pots Thursday only to be rewarded with one very large “Muddie” which he shared for Sundowners Friday night followed by a short walk to Tipplers for a scrumptious dinner. We had arranged for Saturday to honour Waitangi Day (a few days early than the actual date), the morning saw the arrival of the rest of the group. Roast lambs were prepared and cooked on the Weber, with all vegetables wrapped in cabbage leaves (Kiwi tradition) and aluminium foil then packed in parcels in a second Weber. Sundowners commenced at 4pm and the revelling began. The stove was given a good work out heating all the food, the place was buzzing with activity. For Waitangi Day we had many Flags flying displaying the beautiful silver fern. Our artist – Shelly provided face painting applying gorgeous ferns on arms and faces. At the start of dinner Ann gave a short talk on the History of New Zealand then Peter had arranged a projector and screen and we watched the Hakka. Scrumptious Roast Dinner was served and enjoyed by all, followed by traditional Kiwi Pavlova, Lemon Dreams & NZ Honeycomb! The evening progressed after dinner with the usual toasts and thanking all who helped to make the evening such a fun event and finished with the traditional “Running of the Kiwi’s” a hysterical finale to a great night! You had to be there to see it! Sunday dawned with a few late starters and sore heads but did not detract from our Australia Day celebrations. The Kiwi flags were removed and replaced with an assortment of Aussie flags and paraphernalia. Ilka & Andre provided a vast selection of Aussie songs and we listened and sung along with these during the afternoon. Everyone dressed up either in green & gold or red, white & blue to honour the day. Our entertainment officer (Peter) was on hand with a Duck Race, everyone had a number and Zeke braved the waters and dropped the ducks into the sea then proceeded to chase them to shore. Needless to say we soon had a winner regardless of the tide going out. It was totally hilarious! The duck race was such a hit that following a few changes the race was run again. With the help of Arthur ‘The Honest’ claiming victory! Lots of laughs! Duck & spoon races were held adding to the frivolity yet again. A BBQ was planned for the evening meal with shared salads and desserts including the Aussie Pavlova, Lamingtons and Anzac Biscuits! Cathy gave a short summary of the History of Australia. Monday dawned with the inevitable clean up and packing up and a few more headaches. Lake Somerset Holiday Park camping trip – Friday 14 to Sunday 16 March 2014 Most of us arrived at some time on Friday with the exception of Danny & Marian on Saturday about lunch time. Arthur & Jan chose a great location near the Block D amenities and close to the boat ramp. Our camp site consisted of a caravan, campervan, camper trailers, tents sites & 4 Gazebos with a total of 25 campers. Also we had 5 day trippers, Robin & Christine & kids came for a day trip on Saturday and enjoyed the day out on the water in their boat. Saturday was spent trying out the Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP) and kayaks. A lot of fun was had and a few did fall off the SUPs either all by themselves or accidentally with the assistance of a gentle nudge (but not mentioning any names). Dudley also bought his Sail Boat, in which a few went out for a Sail/Row. Saturday night theme was “When Ireland meets Malaysia” in honour of Danny & Marian’s last outing with the group. We had a great selection of Irish & Malaysian meals and once again well done to everyone, the food was fabulous. Sunday lunch we had the traditional Red Claw BBQ with 4 different favours, total of 162. The team work in preparing, cooking and eating was amazing. T R A I L E R B O AT I N G 33 The weather was the best we have ever have at Somerset, lovely sunny days with a slight breeze. Great time was had by all. Little Ship Club Easter – Good Friday 18 to Easter Monday 21 April 2014 Ann, Paul & Lincoln, Cathy & Peter, Rob and Michelle & Anthony all arrived throughout the day Friday. Sundowners followed by Peter’s yummy Fish Curry & Di & Rob’s Rice, and Michelle & Anthony’s Cheesecake meant we all had superb time on board Tango. A fabulous night thanks Ann & Paul. Saturday we all up for an early start with the Sail Past and Commodore’s at Home Parade. We all met on the lawns at Little Ship Club then headed to Tango dressed in MBTBC SCG tshirts, Ann & Paul looking well decked out in black & white. We met the other vessels at Myora Light and joined the flotilla of boats to the Saluting Vessel “Loani” and back to Little Ship Club. On board Tango we all had our jobs to do as we passed the saluting vessel, it was great, we looked fantastic and were the only boat that lowered their flags as we went past. It was a gorgeous day relaxing on the lawns, lunch at Little Ships. Saturday night dinner was provided by Ann’s son who had been fishing and gave us (2) Dolphin Fish which was BBQ along with salads and more cheesecake. Sunday breakfast was enjoyed around the BBQ and the Easter Bunny came too. St Helena Day Trip – Saturday 10 May 2014 After a Friday of most gorgeous weather with sheer blue skies and some 26 degrees we were greeted by clouds and wind on Saturday morning. We had booked a guided gaol tour with the rangers which was scheduled for 11:00 in the morning. After the tour it was planned to have a BYO picnic. The group assembled at the picnic area, the agreed meeting point with the ranger. In the meantime dark clouds and wind reached the island and some raindrops started to fall. Nevertheless, the ranger greeted the group and after all that delay the tour began. We walked up the path to the ruins and the ranger told us how the prisoners had lived and worked there. He showed us how the steers reacted to his whistling, they all came running, expecting to be talked to it seemed. The group was amused by that. Poor beasts - after a short life on that island paradise facing their last journey to the abattoir... All in all it was a very interesting tour and we would have enjoyed it much more if only the weather were more favourable. Just as we returned to the picnic area to get our food from the boats, Michelle and Anthony arrived with their esky. Ann and Paul had left their goodies at the tables before we went on the tour and came back to no bread rolls, no cookies, no jam donuts and half eaten butter. The crows obviously had a feast! We finished our meal, the wind dropped and we went on our obligatory cruise group walk. We went along the shoreline to the kiln and cemetery, took some photos and returned to our boats. Despite the weather a great day out. P.S. Next day on Motherʼs Day the sun shone again, no cloud in the sky and the bay was flat as... Sanctuary Cove Boat Show – Sunday 25 May 2014 5 couples (Jan, Arthur, Peter, Cathy, Andreas, Ilka, Anthony, Michelle, Tracey and JP) attended the SCIBS. There was a change of location for the Park ’n’ Ride which departed near Helensvale railway station. It was noted that the boat show was not as popular as previous shows and the number of exhibitors was significantly reduced. However attendees still enjoyed what was there. Some minor purchases were done. The group did their usual lunch at Georges Paragon. Members made several offers on boats “subject to Lotto wins” but this was not accepted by vendors. A good day was had by all. Southern Haven October Long Weekend 2014 On Saturday morning most of the SCG arrived at Southern Haven. Rob and Di had already spent the night there and Bruce and John had left Manly in the small hours of Saturday morning and picked up Jenny and Christine from Rudy Maas later in the morning. Cathy and Peter started from Horizon Shores as well as Michelle and Anthony, albeit later due to some family issues. Ilka and Andreas launched at Vicky Point. Its been a pleasant passage for the boats and everyone seemed relaxed when they arrived. But Tipplers Passage was packed. It wasn’t easy to find a vacant spot along the shore to tie the boats to. Some of us were sitting down at the water when we saw Tango passing by and disappearing in the distance; Ann giving us a wave. Minutes later they came back, disappeared and came back and disappeared again. Somewhere closer to Tipplers’ kiosk than to our club house they found a place to anchor. Three other families were present at the Haven as well and had to bear with us. One couple - Donna and David might join our group. They have a yacht very similar to Danny’s and Marian’s Sandemar. The afternoon was spent chatting and exchanging news, drinking the one or other beer and taking eskies and all other stuff from the boats to the kitchen and settling down. Some little maintenance works, such as fixing the gasmeter by Rob were carried out and the new colour scheme of the tables and seats was admired. The fire was started and the BBQ prepared and very soon after we all could smell the delicious aromas of slow cooking ribs on the BBQ. Sundowners was down at the water, relaxing, drinking and snacking Christine’s sausage rolls, watching the sunset and the many boats on the water. Later everyone got ready for the Wild West Dinner. We soon found out that we had three of the most infamous men amongst us: Pete Crazy Eyes , Andreas Moonshine Kid and Paul the Perv. They all turned to be out quite harmless despite their frightening images on the WANTED posters. The three indians of the group had to show one of their popular dances to prove they’re real indians. The shared dinner was a success, as always. The delicious ribs were accompanied by Beef Nachos, Chili con Carne and oven potatoes; followed by apple crumble, Pavlova and Wagon Wheels. We had to wheel ourselves to the campfire, we were that full. Michelle then started to hand out Baileys and other sweet alcoholic shots; and familiar tunes of Country and Western music and soundtracks of Westerns played until late. There are always little events happening within the group: Activities unrelated to boating but nevertheless fun, awards presented and stories told. If you have a boat and enjoy great company and fun, this may be the group for you. We meet every second Sunday of the month at 4.30pm at MBTBC to discuss previous and future activities. Cheers...Peter Harman, Social Cruise Captain 0409 119 009 COASTGUARD MARINE ASSIST Marine Assist, Coast Guard’s Towing Service now operates State-wide. Manly’s Coast Guard Flotilla has linked its Marine Assist program to every Coast Guard flotilla in Queensland. Boaties who join the local Coast Guard’s Marine Assist program will now receive a new membership card entitling them to 24-hour help at sea from any Coast Guard base in the state, at no cost. This applies throughout the year, regardless of how often you break down. Brisbane Coast Guard Commander Steve Fleming said Marine Assist worked like the RACQ afloat. “When you join Coast Guard’s Marine Assist program”, he said, “you are covered throughout the year, no matter how often you break down. Commander Fleming said many towing services on Moreton Bay offer you only one free tow per year, when you join them; and after that you have to pay a reduced fee for each subsequent tow home. But Coast Guard’s Marine Assist program offers you free assistance throughout your membership year, regardless of how often you call us for help. It’s the best deal in the Bay, and smart boaties shouldn’t leave shore without joining,” he said. Commander Fleming said the annual Marine Assist membership fee is just $70. “Considering a single breakdown close to shore could easily cost over $200 in towing fees, and may exceed $1,000 if the vessel is a long distance from its home port, joining Marine Assist makes sense.” Commander Fleming and Coast Guard skipper Graeme Thompson designed the new Marine Assist membership cards, which are individually numbered. “A boatie just has to quote the 36 T R A I L E R B O AT I N G COASTGUARD card number when calling us for assistance, and we’ll immediately send a boat to aid them 24/7,” Commander Fleming said. Boaties can join Marine Assist by calling into Coast Guard’s Manly base (on Trafalgar Street) any weekend, and filling out a membership application form in person, or by phoning Coast Guard’s radio room any weekend on (07) 33965911 with your credit card handy, or by emailing Coast Guard’s Administration Officer on [email protected] and asking him to email you a Marine Assist application form. “This is a unique and important addition to boating safety in Queensland,” Commander Fleming said, “I encourage all boaties who haven’t yet joined Marine Assist to do so as soon as possible. Once they join Marine Assist, we’ll look after them for free, if they strike problems at sea.” • CG-21 on its way to assist a breakdown in the Bay • Coast Guard crewman Colin Honey helps secure a tow line to a breakdown T R A I L E R B O AT I N G 37 MBTBC WEDDING EXPO PLANNING YOUR BIG DAY WITH MBTBC We held our inaugural Wedding Expo in the Function Centre on September 21st and were joined by several Wedding Service Providers (see right for details).
