Terms and Conditions
As with all the lots in this catalogue, if you’d like to see a high quality digital
image of these items, simply email your requests to me at the address below.
Incidentally, another improved aspect of our new online auction system is that
you can now view much higher quality images than before, and often with more
than one image per lot.
As usual we have some great value collections of albums and miscellaneous
autographs (Lots 22-52) in the auction. I’m always delighted for customers to
view these quantity lots (or indeed any lots) at our offices. Just let me know what
you’d like to see and I’ll get it all ready for you.
Some other lots that have caught my eye? How about a fascinating collection of
items relating to Mahatma Gandhi (Lot 125), including a copy of the BhagavadGita, inscribed and dated in Hindi by the great spiritual leader himself? A true
cornerstone for any collection. And I must also mention the various signed LPs
we have (Lots 148 and following), all in wonderful condition and sourced directly
from a top BBC radio producer of the 1970s and 80s.
At Fraser’s we work especially hard to research and verify all the autographs that
are brought to our offices on London’s prestigious Strand.
We do this so you can rest easy in the knowledge that all the lots we offer to you
are accompanied by Certificates of Authenticity that provide a 100% Lifetime
Money Back Guarantee. So you can bid with total confidence – building a lasting
collection of guaranteed quality.
We hope you enjoy reading this catalogue as much as we did putting it together
for you. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further enquires at
all – and especially if you’re interested consigning items to auction yourself.
Best of luck with your bidding!

EINSTEIN, ALBERT
ALS A highly personal letter from Albert Einstein to his first wife,
Mileva. The letter is the second request for a divorce, including a
pledge to settle the Nobel Prize on Mileva. Einstein was determined to
take all the necessary steps to bring this about, including significant
pecuniary dispositions beginning with an annuity of 9,000 marks
(of which 2,000 is to be put to the benefit of the children), and
the guarantee of her widow’s pension. Above all, in the event of
his winning the Nobel prize, it is to be made over entirely to her,
deposited in Switzerland, and replacing the annuity. These ‘colossal
sacrifices’ would only be made in the event of uncontested divorce.
He therefore asks her to institute divorce proceedings against him,
and he would ensure that no trouble or discomfort ensues for her.
In 1922 Einstein was awarded the Nobel prize for Physics and, as
promised, transferred the money to Mileva, who used it to buy three
houses in Zurich. One page with central fold (written on two sides),

Stevenson’s residence at the time when the letter was written. The
‘like kilns’ the letter refers to are the kilns which had been built
by Benjamin Outram and Samuel Beresford Bullbridge near to
Ambergate in order to process limestone from their quarry at Crich.
George Stephenson had discovered deposits of coal at Clay Cross
and realised that burning lime would provide a use for the slack
which otherwise would go to waste. He leased Cliff Quarry at Crich,
and built eight limekilns beside the railway. The site is now called the
“Crich Tramway Village”.
Letter in fair condition, with fold splits to the envelop wrapper
affecting the last page of the letter, expected age wear and toning
to the address leaf. Address leaf includes remnants of the seal and
what is possibly a rare Penny Black pl 11 with Maltese cross cancel
(in quite poor condition).

WATSON, THOMAS A.
TLS Inventor and assistant to Alexander Graham Bell (1854-1934).
We have a typed letter over one side of a single sheet of off-white
paper (approx. 8.5x9.5 in), dated May 14th, 1924, signed at the
close in dark pen ink “Thomas A. Watson”. In full “Dear Mr Longley, I
find on my return for a few days absence your two letters. It will give
me great pleasure to be present when you present the replicas to the
Salem Y.M.C.A. and June 15th is entirely convenient for me. It would
be a very suitable occasion for me to give me lecture on the Birth of
the telephone if it would not monopolize too much of the evening.
The entire lecture takes an hour and a quarter but I could cut it
down to half an hour. I gave it in Salem many years ago but there
probably be few in the audience who have heard it. If the lecture
isn’t advisable, please command me. I am at your service for the
evening in any way you prefer. I accept with pleasure our invitation
to dinner for that evening”, Cordially yours, Thomas A. Watson”. The
letter is accompanied by an archive of interesting pieces including
a very early telephone service and rental receipt from New England
Telephone and Telegram Company for $2.00, dated December 1,
1885 and signed by Edmond W. Longley; New England Telephone
and Telegram Company Contract No. 21, from July 1885, signed

Longley regarding the pamphlet; a great 10x8.5 in portrait of the
early telephone pioneers, dated 2/27/14, featuring Alexander
Graham Bell; a copy of a tablet to be dedicated by the Essex Institute
in 1922; a photocopy of a letter from Bell to Batchelder regarding
the Essex Institute in 1922; a photocopy of a notice written by
Bell in connection with a demonstration in February 1877; a 10x8
photograph of telephone components used in an engagement in
June 1924; an original newspaper article with the headline “1st Salem
Telephone Exchange Opened on April Fool’s Day, 1880”, listing

may keep you in this same fresh creative strength for a very long
time (...) I will certainly act in accordance with your indication, and I

first set eyes on your masterpiece, and I must apologise to you that
our constrained musical circumstances have not permitted me to do
so already. (...) All the kindest wishes from the Princess and, from

A gelatin silver print, hand printed, backed on card and signed by
the photographer in 1977. Overall size 20x16”. NOT signed by Elvis
