The Moriah Foundation 2015 Annual Review THE FUTURE IS OUR FOCUS Photography: Students: Nadine Saacks Social: Ingrid Shakenovsky and Moriah College Written and designed by The Moriah Foundation Print management by Dashing Digital Our warm thanks are extended to the students, their parents and guardians, our volunteers, and the staff of Moriah College who shared their stories, smiled for our camera, and gave their time for this review. 2015 ANNUAL REVIEW ABOUT THE MORIAH FOUNDATION Since its establishment following the 2011 Capital Appeal, The Moriah Foundation has continued to focus on the sustainability of Moriah College and therefore the affordability of a Moriah education to members of the community. Giving our children a Jewish education, and thereby a Jewish moral compass with a strong Jewish identity, is central to our beliefs. Connecting our children to their Judaism and to Israel, and teaching them to be advocates for Israel is the key to Jewish continuity - now and well into the future. The Moriah Foundation has begun to raise much-needed funds to pay off the purchase of the Queens Park land as well as to address the issue of affordability. The Foundation aspires to provide future generations of Moriah students with the opportunity to benefit from the world-class secular and Jewish education that Moriah College offers in state-of-the-art facilities. The Foundation provides means-tested bursaries and financial assistance to students whose family financial circumstances would otherwise prevent them from attending the College, and additional funding to enrich students’ Moriah education. Three key strategic goals guide the activities of the Foundation: • Fundraising Through donations, gifts, legacies and bequests to The Moriah Foundation that sustain the future of Moriah College. • Friendraising Through effective communication and service to the College community to attract, build upon and retain the interest and support of past students, future, current and past parents, families and friends within the Sydney Jewish community and beyond. • Funds management To manage invested funds to optimise long term growth and security. 2015 Foundation Board of Directors Chairman Brian Schwartz AM President Judy Lowy Treasurer Stephen Jankelowitz Members Cheryl Bart AO Jeremy Dunkel Bruce Fink Ian Fischl Robert Gavshon Tony Ryba John Weiss College President Giora Friede College Principal John Hamey Foundation Director Joseph Herschel THE FUTURE IS OUR FOCUS THE MORIAH FOUNDATION BURSARY PROGRAM Moriah College is proud to be offering means-tested bursaries in addition to academic scholarships. Consistent with any private school education, the cost of a Moriah education is increasingly challenging for many families. In 2013 the Moriah Foundation Bursary Program was launched for families who find the cost of a Moriah education beyond their reach. By application, bursaries are offered to families who are most in need. Bursaries provide families with a fixed sum for a defined period of their school education at Moriah, such as the duration of a child’s Primary or High School education, or from Year K to 12. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, in 2014 and 2015 twenty children received bursaries. Bursaries awarded in 2014 • The Phil and Vivien Green Bursary • The Gutman Family Bursary in loving memory of Isaac Gutman • The Lynton Levin Memorial Bursaries • The Levy Foundation Bursaries • The Max Klein Memorial Bursary • The Maister Family Bursary • The Mt Zion Kindergarten Partial Bursaries • The Golda and Jacob Rusanow Memorial Bursaries • The Michael and Eleonora Triguboff Bursary • The Moriah Foundation Full and Partial Bursaries Bursaries awarded in 2015 • The Blank Family Bursary • The Cordell Family Bursary • The Owen and Andy Nathan Family Bursary in loving memory of Leon Nathan • The Ervin and Lotte Vidor Bursary in loving memory of Mila and Kasriel Rosen • The Moriah Foundation Full and Partial Bursaries 2015 ANNUAL REVIEW Dear Mr Hamey, December 2015 It is the end of our first formal year of education at Moriah College how time has flown and what a wonderful year it has been. As a bursary recipient I feel the need to write to you and let you know about our year. Abi* is one of those kids who is happy in all situations and socialises and gets on with whoever she is with. Her class has been filled with such special and wonderful students that from the word go I could see Abi forging long-lasting friendships. She is invited on play dates constantly and the support I have received from the other mums is incredible. Almost all the mums in the class have had some stage or another during the year offered to have Abi during school holidays, or taken her home from school when I have had to work late. I have truly felt part of a caring community. Academically Abi has blossomed and has done so well. Her reading is coming on in leaps and bounds and she now reads to me each night. She is constantly reading road signs and shop signs and is so happy with herself when she confidently points things out to me. She has embraced the Yiddishkeit in the school and I am sure that Abi is the loudest voice when singing Hebrew songs or reciting the Hebrew alphabet. This year my family chose to put aside our regular Hagadah on Pesach and my Uncle and Abi, using her Moriah Hagadah led us through the Pesach Seder. It was truly special and Abi smiled from ear to ear the entire evening. On Shabbat it is Abi leading the prayers confidently telling us all what she learned in Jewish Studies that week. Attending the Mitzvah Celebration only a few weeks ago, I couldn’t help but sit with a lump in my throat watching her receive her first Sabbath candle stick and reflect on how fortunate she is to be offered this incredible experience by being at a Jewish School. I want you to know that I am grateful every day for the privilege of Abi being a student at Moriah College. I can only see her going from strength to strength as a student and I hope that her teachers are getting as much from her and she is getting from them. *The name of the student has been changed to respect the privacy of the family. I wish you and your staff a well-deserved summer break. We look forward to returning in 2016. - Abi’s mother THE FUTURE IS OUR FOCUS LANDMARK YEAR FOR THE BURSARY PROGRAM During 2015 The Moriah Foundation was delighted to announce the launch of The Romy Birnbaum Memorial Bursary Endowment Fund, through a major gift of $1m from Beverley and Phil Birnbaum. This newly established Fund shall award bursaries to our community’s most needy families while preserving its capital base. Other donors may contribute to the Fund and, where the gift is able to sustain a bursary, elect to have a bursary named according to their wishes. Lance and Alex Rosenberg, Phil and Beverley Birnbaum, and Julie and Tessa Rosenberg at the Foundation Members’ Cocktail Party when The Romy Birnbaum Memorial Bursary Endowment Fund was launched. Bursaries to commence in 2016 • The Romy Birnbaum Memorial Bursaries • The Mervyn and Lorraine Basserabie Bursaries • In honour of Frank Lowy AC and Shirley Lowy OAM for their service to Israel, Australia and the Jewish community • In honour of Natie and Frances Kirsh for their charitable contributions to Israel and the Jewish community • In loving memory of Micky and Rose Bass and Sarah and Percy Friedlander who worked so hard to give us an education Page 5 2015 ANNUAL REVIEW There is no greater Mitzvah than to give the gift of a Jewish education so it is critical that we grow The Romy Birnbaum Memorial Bursary Endowment Fund. The Romy Birnbaum Memorial Bursary Endowment Fund is in addition to other major donors who are now supporting the education of twenty (20) children at Moriah College through the Foundation’s Bursary Program. It is expected that through the community’s generosity, at least ten new bursaries will be awarded for students to commence schooling in 2016. Mervyn and Lorraine Basserabie have funded three of those bursaries. THE PRINCIPAL’S TZEDAKAH FUND Recognising that the children of families who are in financial difficulty can often miss out on the full educational and co-curricular offering of a Moriah education, The Principal’s Tzedakah Fund provides short term practical financial support for items such as musical instruments, camp equipment and essentials, school lunch vouchers, uniforms, psychologist sessions, tutoring, etc. Funded with the support of anonymous donors, over $30,000 was granted in 2015 to children whose families needed extra assistance in addition to school fee assistance already granted by the College. SIMCHOT - IN LIEU OF GIFTS We thank the following individuals for kindly asking their guests for donations, in lieu of gifts, to support The Moriah Foundation Bursary Program during 2015. Now in its 31st year, the IST program has grown from just 13 students in 1984 to an unprecedented 102 Moriah College students taking part in 2015, representing 80% of all students in Year 10. The Moriah Foundation and our donors, in partnership with Youth to Israel (Y2i), have removed financial reasons as a barrier to participation in the IST program. Through the generosity of the Foundation’s donors and Y2i, optional vouchers were offered to all families. Those families who felt that they could meet the full cost of the IST program were invited to not take the vouchers. Families who found the cost of IST challenging were invited to apply for an additional means-tested subsidy or an interest free loan, both of which were facilitated by The Moriah Foundation. We were encouraged by the fact that 20% of families elected to not take the vouchers on offer and paid the full cost of IST. By doing so, and together with the Foundation’s donors, they helped to supplement the support provided to families who required additional assistance. We sincerely thank these families for acting in the spirit in which the vouchers were offered. We will continue to rely on this honour system, whereby only those families who actually need the assistance will take the vouchers, and those who don’t will be joining our donors to participate in the mitzvah of helping others to go on the journey of lifetime afforded to IST participants. Thank you to the following donors and community partners who supported the 2015 Israel Study Tour: • • • • • Anonymous donors Youth to Israel (Y2i) The Lowy Foundation The Jewish Agency David and Angelique Lazarus • • • • • The Naumburger and Midalia Families David and Ariane Fuchs Bruce and Lauren Fink The Schwartz Family Gary and Marnie Perlstein 2015 ANNUAL REVIEW ‘.... I couldn’t stop looking and admiring the rich history that lay before me. We finally arrived at the Old City of Jerusalem, and .... I was completely engulfed by its beauty. ‘As we walked down what felt like thousands of stairs down to The Kotel, my heart was pounding, and my head was spinning. I heard the chatter of my friends, and the anticipation was palpable. We lined up in front of The Kotel .... and Rabbi Benji gave a moving D’var Torah of the essence of Jerusalem and Am Yisrael. ‘.....an overwhelming sense of awe sent shivers through my spine. I was here. I was finally here. I honestly felt like I was staring at a photo, a postcard. ‘This was the very same place where our great ancestors stood. Where they came to give sacrifices to Hashem.... where they came to honour Him...... I felt such an immense sense of pride and gratitude to be standing there, and as we shouted ‘AM YISRAEL CHAI’ ...... I knew that I had definitely made the right decision to come on IST.’ Gabi Adler Year 10 student and IST 2015 participant THE FUTURE IS OUR FOCUS EMBRACING INNOVATION A complex, challenging, and evolving world awaits our students, requiring them to be collaborative, agile, curious and adaptive problem solvers. To succeed, they must learn to critically engage with the world, take risks, learn from failure, be flexible and self-directed, and to creatively challenge conventional thinking. The generosity of one of our donors has been the catalyst for Moriah to embrace pervasive, school-wide transformation in teaching and learning. This will embody a spirit of innovation that sparks the renewal of the Moriah learning community and drives an evolution of world best teaching practice across all stages of the curriculum. Through the philanthropic support of The Moriah Foundation, from 2016 the College will begin to champion the transformation of classrooms through clearly defined learning design principles. Driven by the College Principal in partnership with teaching staff in their classrooms, the College will create an environment where teachers engage in deep professional learning about how to best prepare our students for a world that requires them to be technologically sophisticated, flexible and innovative. This initiative will accelerate our vision to build future generations of capable, adaptive, fluid and agile learners who readily embrace the ongoing process of learning, unlearning and relearning. In partnership with the Music and Opera Singers Trust, the Foundation established The Nelly Apt Scholarship for Excellence in Music. The Scholarship is awarded annually to a current student or former Collegian who has demonstrated excellence in their chosen instrument at their level. The Scholar is invited to further their study of music in The State of Israel. The inaugural winner is Sarit Michael (Class of 2011). VISUAL ARTS AND DRAMA Through the generosity of a number of supporters of The Moriah Foundation, opportunities were provided to Moriah College students to advance their studies and interests in visual arts and drama. We thank the following for their in-kind and financial support: • Anonymous donors • Michael Shur, Moira Blumenthal, and the Shalom Institute • The Breuer Family in memory of Eva Breuer • Margaret Gutman OAM • Bambi Blumberg, Gene Sherman, and the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation While at the College, Sarit played the oboe from Year 3 until Year 12 and in early years of High School, she began to take an interest in becoming a vocalist. With support from her music teachers, soon her voice became her instrument of choice. In 2011, she travelled to the USA and Israel with the Moriah Band Tour as their first oboist and lead singer. Sarit graduated from The University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts, with Majors in both Psychology and Music. In November 2015, Sarit embarked on a journey of music education at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Ramat Hasharon, Israel with long term goals of gaining professionalism and insight into the music industry and beyond. Page 11 2015 ANNUAL REVIEW A legacy THAT EXTENDS FOR OVER 30 YEARS For students who have demonstrated commitment to the music program yet find the cost of Music Camp beyond the financial capacity of their family, The Chaim Kopilovicius Memorial Awards for Moriah College Music Camp provides direct funding support. Chaim Kopilovicus (1892-1982) emigrated from Lithuania to Australia via Shanghai in 1936 having established a handbag and leather factory. He lived a very reclusive life having never married nor having his own family. In his last few years he was very unwell, with poor eyesight. At the time of his death his signed Will could not be located and the Public Trustee attempted to take ownership of his Estate. Eventually his last Will was discovered by tapping on the walls of his house, hidden in a secret panel. Chaim Kopilovicius, in Lichtenburg SA, 1974 Thankfully, Chaim’s benevolence has extended to many in our community. His home at 34 Ormond Street, Paddington later became known as Beit Chaim. It was converted into a home for young Jewish adults with intellectual disabilities to live independently under the supervision of JewishCare, and has continued as a program that provides flexible support for Jewish adults with a disability. The Chaim Kopilovicus Memorial Scholarship was established in 1986 to financially assist students attending Moriah College and Masada College and, to date, more than 350 Jewish children have benefited. In 2015, Chaim’s generosity extended to supporting two students attendance at Moriah College Music Camp under the guidance of the Music and Opera Singers Trust and The Moriah Foundation. Today, Chaim’s great-great-nephew and great-great-neice, Matt and Chelsea Nurick, participate in the Moriah College Music Program. It is a remarkable testament to his generosity that thirty years after his passing, there are students in our community that continue to benefit from his 30-year legacy. The Moriah Foundation invites members of the community to follow Chaim’s footsteps and include a gift to Moriah in their Will, or to contribute directly to support either The Chaim Kopilovicius Memorial Awards for Moriah College Music Camp or The Nelly Apt Scholarship for Excellence in Music. Page 12 THE FUTURE IS OUR FOCUS Grandparents are the footsteps to the future generations… Grandchildren are the dots that connect the lines from generation to generation. J One of the greatest joys in life for grandparents is to be involved in the lives of their grandchildren. In 2013, The Moriah Foundation established a Grandparents’ Club to enable past and present grandparents of the College or ‘surrogate grandparents’ to become more involved in College life. Grandparents who live overseas or interstate are welcome to visit the College whenever they are in Sydney. K From small beginnings, the Grandparents’ Club has grown to more than 460 members - a 50% increase on the previous year. Special events are held throughout the year - both on and off campus, with speakers on areas of interest to our members. D L G A M E H B C A. B. C.
