The benefits of swimming for your toddler
The benefits of swimming for your toddler
Swimming is an exciting and rewarding activity that you
can do with your child from as early an age as you wish.
The only proviso is that the water is warm enough, around
29-30°C for a toddler and that they are fit and well.
What are the benefits?
Taking your toddler swimming has many benefits including:
•
Giving them a complete physical work-out which helps to
strengthen their heart, lungs and respiratory system
•
Helps with core muscle development and co-ordination
•
Regular swimming can help to improve eating and sleeping
patterns
•
Swimming can be socially stimulating for both you and your
toddler, as well as being an excellent way to bond
•
It is an activity which all the family can take part in
•
Swimming is a life skill that has health benefits for all ages
•
It’s a skill which could save their life.
How to get your toddler started
6
1.
Even if you plan to take your toddler to swimming lessons, it’s a
good idea to take them to the pool yourself first, before you begin
any classes.
2.
Look for family sessions, or times when the whole pool is available
to adults and children.
3.
Start with sessions of around 30 minutes until your toddler is
happy in the water.
4.
Get into the water first and stand in the depth where you feel most
comfortable with your arms out, ready to hold them, then ask your
partner or friend to hand your baby to you in the water.
Hampshire West Magazine
What your child will need
There is a wide range of swimwear available so if your child needs some
encouragement it may help if you allow him to choose his own. It’s best
for boys to wear trunk-type shorts as longer ones that reach the knee
will drag in the water and make swimming difficult.
There are also a lot of buoyancy aids on the market, so you may want to
consider some of these until your child is confident in the water. Or you
can go to a pool that offers family sessions with floats and toys for the
children.
Goggles will stop water getting in their eyes, but you’ll need to make
sure they fit correctly and that they don’t reduce vision.
When not to take your child swimming
As a general guide, if your child has any of the following symptoms it
would be best not to take them swimming:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Cough or cold
Fever
Infection
Diarrhoea
Skin rash
Ear infection
Open wound or cut

Families parties
How to have a stress free kids
party: a parent’s survival
guide
Want to do the birthday party at home but suddenly feel overwhelmed? Take a deep breath and relax; we have ten great tips
to help you create a very happy birthday for your little one.
1. Special date
Don’t choose the actual date of your childs
birthday to have the party on; you want to
be able to enjoy them all to yourself on that
day. Experience tells us that parents pile
even more expectations on themselves
when the party is arranged for the big day.
2. Keep it in perspective
save some presents for the following days.
7. Snap it
Ask a friend or family member who is at the
party to use a camera and capture snaps for
you.
8. Face off
Birthday party pizzaz

Families Hampshire West Magazine
Don’t be tempted to go large. Too many
children can equate to complete chaos. If you
can keep it at home, do and keep it realistic;
up to eight children is more than plenty.
Buy some face paints and get creative. It
is not difficult to paint a basic design on
a childs cheek, and the idea is the taking
part. Remember that a small child is going
to be ecstatic even if you fudge it!
3. Make the cake yourself
9. Be prepared

10. Games time
Jungle Jeans offer high quality and value for
money party programme, that adults and
children can both enjoy. Freshly prepared food
in our 5 rated kitchen. Warm friendly staff, to
help organise your day.
Don’t be scared! Even if it doesn't turn out that
well, the little ones will be more focused on
the fact it’s cake than anything else.
4. Shaped Sandwiche
Use a pastry cutter to cut sandwiches into fun
shapes. A small circle works really well, but
hearts or gingerbread man shapes are also
lots of fun. You can even use white bread one
side and brown the other.
5. Theme it
A princess and pirate party would be great
fun. Ask the other children to come in fancy
dress and organise a treasure hunt along
with other games. Invent your own to fit the
theme, such as 'pin the beak on the parrot'.
6. Hide the presents
Take gifts your child is given discretely to
one side and allow them to open them after
everyone has gone. With smaller children, it
can be very overwhelming and is often nice to
Have the matches close to hand for when the
time comes to sing happy birthday. Have the
music ready so you only have to hit play; one
CD of kiddie music is all you’ll need.
If you’ve layered sweets inside, then save
pass the parcel until after food, or better
still return to the concept of a hand written
note for each child asking them to perform
something. Make it age appropriate, so ask
a toddler to sing Twinkle Twinkle (or their
favourite song), or to produce whatever
sound an animal makes.
When all is said and done, remember that
children are awestruck by the unexpected.
Go for originality, not expense.

Handling Transition and
Change
How to help your child transfer to
By Liat Hughes Joshi
secondary school
It’s one of the biggest transitions of
childhood: moving to secondary school.
From travelling independently to
remembering when homework is due in,
your child will need to become a good deal
more self-sufficient. Here’s how to ease the
transition.
During the months before your little one
makes the big move to secondary school,
it’s recommended that you begin the
following…
Ramp up responsibilities
Senior school children have to be
considerably more responsible for their
own belongings and themselves. Whereas
primary school teachers send letters to
parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on
day-to-day issues might well be to your child
only. Begin by trying to remind your child
less about what kit or books they need daily.
Begin building independence out
and about
Most secondary school pupils travel to school
minus mum and dad, so get yours used to
being out without you. It’ll be less daunting
for them if this starts on the journey to
primary school, rather than being thrown into
travelling alone on a lesser-known route. If
they haven’t started walking to school alone
or with a friend already, the summer term of
year six is a good time to begin. The first time
or two you could walk a little behind them at
least part of the way to keep an eye out.
Listen out for concerns
10
Attend settling-in days
Most secondaries hold a session for
new joiners, usually during the summer
term of year six. This is an important
opportunity to get to know the buildings,
potential classmates and teachers and it
should make the first day less intimidating.
Consider attending any social events at
the school too, such as a concert or the
summer fair.
This won’t matter so much if half your child’s
class is heading to the same secondary but
if there won’t be a familiar face, try and find
prospective classmates through the local
grapevine and then arrange a meet up.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind
once your child has started secondary
school…
Expect them to be tired and
emotional…
Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the
‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more
complicated journey. Stick to early nights and
restful weekends to fend off exhaustion.
Get super-organised with
homework
At primary, pupils might only have had a small
amount of homework; expect the game to be
raised now. Not only will there be more but
keeping on top of when it all needs handing in
can be complicated.
Get used to knowing much less
about what goes on
Some children take this huge change in their
stride and are ready to move on, while others
will feel anxious. Common concerns include
getting lost around a much larger school,
dealing with the journey, making new friends
and managing the homework load.
In primary, you might well have been at the
school gates most days and familiar with your
child’s friends and parents and teachers. This
will change: with independent travel comes a
more hands-off approach.
The key is to keep communication going is
to ask now and then how they’re feeling
about their new school and listen and
reassure them.
It’s tempting to think this independence
means you’re being made redundant come
September but they’ll still need you - albeit in
different ways.

Change is not always welcome. However,
when you are a child with additional or
Special Educational Needs, change can
be completely overwhelming! So how
can parents help their children and young
people to cope better with changes and
transitions? There are two main things to
consider.
The first thing to think about is when to tell
a child that things are going to change? As
parents you are probably the best placed
people for knowing the answer. For some
children, telling them early is essential, whilst
for others it simply contributes to anxiety.
The next thing to think about is how to
tell them about the change. Visits are very
useful, as are social stories, and photos of
new schools and teachers can help them to
know what to expect.
It is important to acknowledge that it is
OK to be worried, and to reiterate that you
will be there for support if they are finding
things challenging.

The Importance of looking after your child's
feet from an early age
By Caroline French, W J French and Sons
Our feet are one of the
hardest working parts of our
body, however little effort is
made to educate people on
the importance of foot health.
able to let you know if his feet are
sore or squashed by his shoes.
At best, poorly fitted shoes won’t
wear as well, so never settle for
anything less than the perfect fit.
Several studies suggest that
between 50% and 70% of foot
problems in later life have been
caused by poorly fitting shoes in
childhood. You wouldn’t trust an
unqualified person to cut your
hair, fix your computer or give
you an eye test, yet how many of
the public buy shoes self-service/
online, expecting them to fit,
support their foot and keep them
in good shape?
How fast do my child’s
feet grow?
Here are the answers to some
questions we are frequently
asked.
Once they start crawling and
cruising you can protect your
baby’s feet from bumps and
scrapes with property fitted pre
walkers.
Does my child need shoes
when he is crawling?
When does a child need
their first pair of shoes?
Barefoot is best – a baby’s foot
contains no fully formed bones
at all. It is made up of soft pliable
bone that is similar to cartilage.
Socks, baby grows and pram
shoes which are tight can restrict
growth and harm your new-born’s
feet.
Harder soled walking shoes
should be considered once the
child has been walking unaided
for about 4 to 6 weeks. This can
be any time between 9 and 18
months. Never push your child to
walk if they are not ready.
Why are properly fitted
shoes so important?
It can take up to 18 years for
the foot’s bones muscles and
ligaments to harden into adult
form. Properly fitted shoes play a
vital role in helping to safeguard
the healthy development of your
child’s feet.
Shoes which don’t fit properly
can cause sores or blisters and at
worst may even lead to long-term
foot problems. The nerve endings
in babies’ feet also take time to
develop, so your child may not be
As a guide Children’s shoes
should be checked for size every:

old and 10-12 weeks thereafter as
they grow a size a year but watch

Can your child focus after lunch?
It’s 2pm on a regular school day, and your
child is part-way through a numeracy class.
They had sandwiches, crisps, and a yoghurt
at 12pm… But now it’s time to concentrate
(on times tables) and they’re losing focus.
Another 20 minutes and they’ll have stopped
paying attention to the teacher. By 3:20pm,
chances are they’ll be cranky and starting to
act up. The culprit? It could be the contents
of their lunch box.
It’s well researched that children who eat
school dinners are up to 18%
Dr Megan McClelland, Child
more likely to be ‘on task’ in the

saturated fat.
It’s true – some children do prefer
the familiarity of a home-packed
lunch; but it’s not easy to provide the same
variety and nutrition as a school meal, day
after day. In fact, research shows that for
every 100 lunchboxes we prepare, only one
of them hits the same nutritional standards
as a school dinner.
The solution: freshly cooked
school dinners, prepared using quality
ingredients, in line with the National School
Food Standards. They’re meticulously
planned to give your child the levels of
energy and nutrients they need to focus
and stay engaged with their teachers, right
through ‘til teatime.
Relax, read
and succeed
this summer
Whilst summer holidays should be relaxing and fun, it is important to keep
children reading and learning. Here are some ideas from Reading Chest
which may help…
Fishing for Sounds - Write letter sounds onto plastic ducks or other
objects and put them in your paddling pool. Scoop them out with a net
and use the sounds to play games e.g. make words beginning with the
sound / ending with the sound / invent silly rhymes etc.
Shaving Foam - Get messy outside with shaving foam on a table.
Have fun practising writing letter sounds with your finger in the foam. If
you want to get really messy – add a little paint!
Top Trumps - Top Trumps is really popular in schools as it delivers
a range of educational benefits through ‘camouflaged learning’. As
well as being great fun, it improves literacy, numeracy and subject
knowledge. (toptrumps.co.uk).
•
Freshly cooked hot meals, nutritionally balanced to boost
focus (and therefore academic
attainment)
•
Plenty of fruit and veg with
every meal (at least two of their
five a day)
•
Lower supermarket bills for you
and less lunchbox hassle
•
Exciting choices: a wide
range of familiar dishes, and
encouragement to try foods you
may not serve at home
•
Great social time, eating a
relaxed meal at the table with
friends
•
For children in year R, 1, and
2, school meals are free. And
for year 3 upwards, they still
cost less than a take-out coffee.
Speak to your school office to
sign up.

meals please call Call City Catering
