Women’s Health Center Opening Carbondale Office Thinking About Golf By Art McLain Par is a score that an experienced and talented golfer expects to make on a hole in golf. Pars range from 3 on shorter distance holes to 5 on the longest holes. Rarely you might encounter a par 6 on an extra long hole somewhere but usually par ranges from 3 to 5. What gets really exciting for golfers is when they make a score of less than par on a hole. One shot less than par, for example a score of 3 on a par 4 hole, is considered a birdie. A even greater accomplishment is an eagle or a score of two shots less than par. Technically a hole-inone would be an eagle but the significance of a perfect shot usually stands alone by the term ace or simply a holein-one. Good players usually like Pet of the Week to play on par 5 holes as they are generally the holes that could be most easily eagled. A good drive, a second shot on or near the green and then a putt or chip is most commonly the score of an eagle. An eagle on a par 4 is much tougher. Sometimes a long hitter of a ball can drive the ball to the green on a par 4 and make a putt. Professionals make eagle fairly often but it is still quite an accomplishment. Another way to make an eagle on a par 4 is after a tee shot the second shot goes into the hole. This might not be as easy as it sounds as the shot is played off the ground, without a tee, and the shot might be uphill, downhill, side hill or pretty much any combination of complicating factors. Recently a local team made both a hole-in-one on a par 3 and an eagle on a par 4. This is quite a feat especially considering that they are not nearly professional players. In a captain and mate league, both hitting and then taking the best shot and playing again from that spot, they have made both a hole-in-one and another eagle. Golf is a social game and neither of these gentlemen knew each other before being paired together to form a team. Congratulations Del and John. Best wishes for a great golf season. Is there anyone who doesn’t love flowers? Flowers highlight many events from the joy and happiness of wedding days, birthdays, anniversaries and even the sad occasion of a funeral. Forest City has had the florist business since 1949. Mr. O’Neill started working in the florist business while in high school for a cousin, Isabel. He grew up in Pleasant Mount on a dairy farm. He attended Forest City schools. He still has relatives in the area and though he had the option of leaving he returned to Forest City. He attended college to further an education in art. At times there is a gallery of art in his shop. He is an artist himself and recently has worked on landscape paintings. Mr. O’Neill said that perhaps 50 percent of his business is providing the flowers for weddings. Chances are you’ve seen his work at a wedding you have attended. He takes pride in his workmanship and the hours can be long in creating just what the brides have in mind. Mr. O’Neill is a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers. Each year they have an exhibition at the Philadelphia Flower Show. If you have not been to the show you should go and will be amazed by the exhibits and displays. Each year there is a different theme and the past year the theme was National Parks. Mr. O’Neill’s creation was an elk which he said might have taken 40 hours of work from start to completion. It is made with a wide assortment of materials and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, they run the flower show, liked it so much they asked if they could keep it and did. He would like to thank his customers for supporting his business. When asked if he had a favorite flower he could not name a specific flower. Asked how many different flowers he has worked with he estimated it is probably more than 100 different flowers. At home Mr. O’Neill and his partner, Bill, have a garden of perennials. They have four basset hounds. Mr. O’Neill has no plans to retire. He loves what he does and it is evident through his beautiful creations. Thank you, Mr. O’Neill, for your loyality and service to Forest City and the happiness you share through the flowers and arrangements you provide to your customers. If you haven’t been to his House of Flowers why not give it a visit? ENTRY BLANK Forest City Lions Club GOLF TOURNEY Friday, August 5th One Shotgun Start 9:00 A.M.
