Glomar Challenger Expedition By: Christina DeFlorio What was it? ● It was a 15 year long scientific expedition ● It was a oceanographic drilling and coring platform ● Drilled up to 1,700 meters into the ocean floor What Did it Do? ● This system collected long and thin cylinders of sediment and rock from beneath the ocean floor ● These cylinders were called “cores” Facts ● Active between 1968 to 1983 ● Scientists on this vessel used the rock samples to further examine the ocean floor ● Pipes would descend into the ocean and travel 20,000 feet to collect these samples Fun Facts ● This research ship was 400 feet in length ● The ship investigated over 624 sites ● Traveled on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans Bibliography ● ● ● "Glomar Challenger | Ship."
