She is excited about her students and their accomplishments. Ms. Carr does a lot of hands-on activities to bring lessons to life. Such as, the garden her students have planted as part of their lesson on the Holocaust. They will be releasing butterflies soon. Her students have also written books this year. The books are available in the Dunn Middle Library for all to enjoy. Ms. Carr loves her students and is thrilled to bring a love of learning into her classroom. ” Pictured, left to right: Assistant Principal Steven Murphy and Principal Janet Doffermyre, Kayla Carr and VP of Education Lena West. South River Electric Membership Corporation Congratulations Sue Dunlap Student Advocate/EC Triton High School Mrs. Johnson was nominated by a colleague Melinda Alvarado. In her nomination, Ms. Alvarado stated, “I started working with Mrs. Dunlap when I was pulled to help some ED students take an online biology class at Triton. Mrs. Dunlap is a student advocate for Special Education students as well as those that might be having some issues in their home lives. Every student she talks to she tells them she loves them when they leave, and you can tell that she means it. The students always respond with “I love you too Mrs. Dunlap.” She truly believes in each student and does everything in her power to help them succeed and graduate. Just the few months that I have known her I have witnessed her counsel grieving students, give some tough love to those who need it, help underprivileged girls get dresses for prom, and even visit a student that was in jail because she believed in him so much. It is not rare for Mrs. Dunlap to work on Saturdays in order to catch up on work. Work that she could have done during the week, but she put aside to help a student. Mrs. Dunlap also handles all of the attendance for the entire school. Many students come to her trying to explain their absences and she listens with an open heart and never judges. She is all about helping them find a solution. Mrs. Dunlap keeps a snack drawer—giving students that come in to see her some type of treat. I have seen this special drawer be used to give something to a student that is hungry. Whether they were late to school and didn’t get breakfast, or didn't have money for lunch, she has at times freely given her lunch to a student. I have worked with many wonderful teachers and professionals, but Sue Dunlap is a wonderful person, teacher, co-worker, Christian and professional.” DTH Management Group, LTD. The Triton Close Up Club traveled to Washington, D.C. for the annual Close Up Convention in April. Students raised money to attend by holding a Rock-A-Thon prior to the trip. Students brought rocking chairs to school and rocked for 12 hours, only taking a 10–minute break every hour. Sponsors had committed money for every hour they rocked. While in Washington, the attendees visited numerous locations, including Capitol Hill, the National Archives, the Australia and Saudi Arabian Embassy’s, the Holocaust Museum, the White House, the Washington Memorial and many more. While at the convention, students took part in a debate competition with other states attendees on various topics. Part of the experience was two students from each school roomed with two students from a different state. This allowed students to meet others and to gain new perspective and taught them to remain open to everyone’s opinions. At the conclusion of the convention, a farewell dinner and dance were held for all the participants. Mr. Jim Currin, U.S. Government teacher, has attended the Close Up Convention 31 with his Triton students. This trip is thought to be a great success and an experience the students will think of for a lifetime. The Dunn Middle School Junior Beta Club Chapter welcomed and pinned in thirty–seven new members at their spring induction ceremony. The Beta Club invites students to become members who maintain a grade point average of 93% or above and those who also exhibit outstanding moral character. It serves as an honor society and a service organization, providing opportunities for students to participate in school and community service projects. This years’ induction ceremony was lead by the Leadership team: Tilghman Pope, President; Breighanna Hobbs, Vice President; Secretary, Angelique Morales; Treasurer, Mackie Brown; and Historian, Michael Slusser. A tribute to the late Fonnie Godwin, former Beta advisor and Dunn Middle teacher, was presented by Daughtry Williams, Taft Stevens, and Grayson Bradham. The ceremony included the passing of the light candle ceremony in which all members were reminded to let their light shine through all actions and deeds. Dunn Middle is very proud of all of these young men and women and the fine example they set as role models and leaders in their school and community. The entire school population of Dunn Middle School gathered inside the school gym for this unique school photo in early May. More than 450 Greenwaves shirts were given out to students, staff and teachers. This was the culmination of a positivity campaign started by Principal Janet Doffermyre earlier in the school year. The campaign included slogans, quotes and even an official song—”Hall of Fame” by the Script. The campaign came to fruition when the redistricting issue came up last year and a lot of negative things were being said about Dunn Middle. The positivity campaign was a way to boost morale at the school on a daily basis. As part of a student led discussion regarding the schools store, many students requested a Greenwaves t-shirt be made available. Karen Watson took on this project and was finally able to hand out the shirts to every student, teacher, staff member and even the resource officer in early May! The school is accepting donations to pay for the reminder of the t-shirts. If you are interested in contributing, please contact (910) 591-6074. 84 lumber donated around $800 worth of materials to Harnett Primary for them to fix playground equipment. Workers started the process on April 28th. The great contribution is recognized by a sign at the front of the school. Harnett Primary School has had a wonderful school year and is now gearing up for the last nine weeks of PBIS student incentives. They previously recognized positive behavior for 325 students and hope to award even more this period. Since the PBIS model is a school-wide initiative the staff is also being recognized with special incentives for their work as well.
