President Terry Whittenton and EVP Tammy Williams had the privilege of being a
part of the Inaugural Class of the Campbell University School of Osteopathic
Medicine (CUSOM) Mini Medical School which concluded on May 3rd. The program
helps community leaders get a sense of the value this school provides its students
and this community. From the Vision for Missions, to the on campus Free Health
Clinic, to the high level of technology, to the Christian values, to the tremendous
growth this new medical school has already achieved, to what this school means for
rural America, to so much more.

and Terry Whittenton, and Oscar Aylor, Dir. Comm. And Global Health.
On Thursday, May 5 a Business After Hours and Open House was

Erwin. Attendees were welcomed by CEO BIll Sharek and VP Patricia
Little, as well as other staff. Tours were offered of the newly expanded

development.

On May 13, a 50th Anniversary Celebration was held for Godwin Manufacturing
Company. Since its start in April 1966 the business has since grown to the nation's

manufacturer, with nearly half a million square feet under one roof here in Dunn.
Phyllis Norris, VP and daughter of Pat and Judy, welcomed everyone to the festivities.
Attendees included Godwin employees, clients from across the US, representatives
from several sister companies, local dignitaries, friends and family members. Chamber
EVP Tammy Williams offered congratulations and thanks for years of support. Both
Mayor Oscar Harris and County Commissioner Jim Burgin presented them with
proclamations from the City of Dunn and Harnett County. Mayor Harris also presented
Mr. Godwin with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine—NC's highest honor given to a
civilian on behalf of Gov. Pat McCrory. Mr. Godwin was presented with a wooden table
made by Holmes Lumber, a division of Carter Lumber by Doug Saunier. Ryan Taylor, CEO of Godwin Manufacturing presented Mr.
Godwin with a plaque on behalf of all his employees. Attendees were invited to stay afterwards for a catered lunch from White Swan

James Shannon offered a prayer for the property.
Following the prayer, Fairfield Inn associate Jalessa
Cade sang the National Anthem.
Chamber President Terry Whittenton welcomed all
the guests and recognized the Fairfield Inns lineage
as a place for rest and relaxation. Mayor Oscar Harris welcomed the property first on behalf of the City of Dunn recognizing the impact
the hotel would have on the city as another tool to bring visitors into our All-America City. He then spoke on behalf of the group of
investors thanking them all for their contributions and partnership. County Commissioner Abe Elmore welcomed the hotel and thanked
them for choosing Harnett County. Crown Hotel and Travel Management President/CEO Barry Eagle spoke next thanking all involved

The second 2016 Boogie on Broad Concert Series presented by Dunn Area Tourism Authority was held on May 19
at the Dunn Shrine Center, under the threat of severe weather. However the free concert by Spare Change brought
rays of sunshine indoors! The lively music kept the crowd moving all night long. In addition to the concert, Sybil the
Clown offered face painting and balloons for the kids and DJ Butch Halpin played for the crowd to start the night, and
in between sets. The Chamber had concessions and the 2016 Boogie on Broad t-shirts available for sale. It was a
great night for some free family fun!
You can always get your Boogie on Broad t-shirts at the Dunn Chamber
office, located inside the Gen. Lee Airborne museum at 209 West Divine.
They are $10 for small to x-large and $12 for 2xl and 3xl.

Congratulations Kayla Carr
7th Grade Teacher
Dunn Middle School
The anonymous nomination stated, “Ms. Carr is an amazing
first year teacher. She is excited about her students and their
accomplishments. Ms. Carr does a lot of hands-on activities to
bring lessons to life. Such as, the garden her students have
planted as part of their lesson on the Holocaust. They will be
releasing butterflies soon. Her students have also written
books this year. The books are available in the Dunn Middle
Library for all to enjoy. Ms. Carr loves her students and is
thrilled to bring a love of learning into her classroom. ”

Congratulations Sue Dunlap
Student Advocate/EC
Triton High School
Mrs. Johnson was nominated by a colleague Melinda
Alvarado. In her nomination, Ms. Alvarado stated, “I started
working with Mrs. Dunlap when I was pulled to help some
ED students take an online biology class at Triton. Mrs.
Dunlap is a student advocate for Special Education students
as well as those that might be having some issues in their
home lives. Every student she talks to she tells them she
loves them when they leave, and you can tell that she means
it. The students always respond with “I love you too Mrs.
Dunlap.” She truly believes in each student and does
everything in her power to help them succeed and graduate.
Just the few months that I have known her I have witnessed
her counsel grieving students, give some tough love to those
who need it, help underprivileged girls get dresses for prom,
and even visit a student that was in jail because she believed
in him so much. It is not rare for Mrs. Dunlap to work on
Saturdays in order to catch up on work. Work that she could
have done during the week, but she put aside to help a
student.
Mrs. Dunlap also handles all of the attendance for
the entire school. Many students come to her trying to
explain their absences and she listens with an open heart and
never judges. She is all about helping them find a solution.
Mrs. Dunlap keeps a snack drawer—giving students that
come in to see her some type of treat. I have seen this special
drawer be used to give something to a student that is hungry.
Whether they were late to school and didn’t get breakfast, or
didn't have money for lunch, she has at times freely given her
lunch to a student.
I have worked with many wonderful teachers and
professionals, but Sue Dunlap is a wonderful person, teacher,
co-worker, Christian and professional.”

The Triton Close Up Club traveled to Washington, D.C. for the annual Close Up Convention in April. Students
raised money to attend by holding a Rock-A-Thon prior to the trip. Students brought rocking chairs to school and rocked for
12 hours, only taking a 10–minute break every hour. Sponsors had committed money for every hour they rocked. While in
Washington, the attendees visited numerous locations, including Capitol Hill, the National Archives, the Australia and
Saudi Arabian Embassy’s, the Holocaust Museum, the White House, the Washington Memorial and many more. While at
the convention, students took part in a debate competition with other states attendees on various topics. Part of the
experience was two students from each school roomed with two students from a different state. This allowed students to
meet others and to gain new perspective and taught them to remain open to everyone’s opinions. At the conclusion of the
convention, a farewell dinner and dance were held for all the participants. Mr. Jim Currin, U.S. Government teacher, has
attended the Close Up Convention 31 with his Triton students. This trip is thought to be a great success and an experience
the students will think of for a lifetime.
The Dunn Middle School Junior Beta Club Chapter welcomed and pinned in thirty–seven new members at their spring
induction ceremony. The Beta Club invites students to become members who maintain a grade point average of 93% or
above and those who also exhibit outstanding moral character. It serves as an honor society and a service organization,
providing opportunities for students to participate in school and
community service projects. This years’ induction ceremony was
lead by the Leadership team: Tilghman Pope, President; Breighanna
Hobbs, Vice President; Secretary, Angelique Morales; Treasurer,
Mackie Brown; and Historian, Michael Slusser. A tribute to the late
Fonnie Godwin, former Beta advisor and Dunn Middle teacher, was
presented by Daughtry Williams, Taft Stevens, and Grayson
Bradham. The ceremony included the passing of the light candle
ceremony in which all members were reminded to let their light
shine through all actions and deeds. Dunn Middle is very proud of
all of these young men and women and the fine example they set as
role models and leaders in their school and community.
The entire school population of Dunn Middle School gathered inside the school gym for this unique school photo in early
May. More than 450 Greenwaves shirts were given out to students, staff and teachers. This was the culmination of a
positivity campaign started by Principal Janet Doffermyre earlier in the school year. The campaign included slogans,
quotes and even an official song—”Hall of Fame” by the Script. The campaign came to fruition when the redistricting issue
came up last year and a lot of negative things were being said about Dunn Middle. The positivity campaign was a way to
boost morale at the school on a daily basis. As part of a student led discussion regarding the schools store, many students
requested a Greenwaves t-shirt be made available. Karen Watson took on this project and was finally able to hand out the
shirts to every student, teacher, staff member and even the resource officer in early May! The school is accepting donations
to pay for the reminder of the t-shirts. If you are interested in contributing, please contact (910) 591-6074.
84 lumber donated around $800 worth of materials to Harnett Primary for them to fix playground equipment. Workers
started the process on April 28th. The great contribution is recognized by a sign at the front of the school.
Harnett Primary School has had a wonderful school year and is now gearing up for the last nine weeks of PBIS student
incentives. They previously recognized positive behavior for 325 students and hope to award even more this period. Since
the PBIS model is a school-wide initiative the staff is also being recognized with special incentives for their work as well.
