September - Palm Beach County Library System
Calendar of Events
September, 2012
Mes de la Herencia Hispana: 15 de septiembre - 15 de octubre
Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 - October 15
Palm Beach County joins the nation each year in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month between September 15 and October 15.
In 2012, our libraries will offer exciting programs that feature the theme of Voces Hispanas (Hispanic Voices). Through music,
dance, literature, and art, our Hispanic community will share beautiful expressions of rich cultural traditions, coming from a
variety of countries and cultures.
This annual commemoration began with Hispanic Heritage Week, started in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson. Twenty
years later, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observation from September 15 to October 15, a month-long period which
includes several Latin American countries’ anniversaries of independence. In 1988, Congress approved Law #100-402 to call
on the people of the United States, especially the educational community, to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month with
appropriate ceremonies and activities.
In this year's programs, we highlight the diversity of Hispanic
Voices – from Venezuelan folkloric music, Chilean artisan crafts,
and songs interpreted within the Spanish tradition of the Tuna –
to explorations of more modern storytelling by world-renowned
Hispanic authors. We invite you to join us as we appreciate the
creativity and authenticity of our many Hispanic cultures.
