MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
As your Board
Chair I will continue working with
the entire Board
of Directors and
staff as we strive
to enhance the
economy so that
your business can
not only survive
but thrive. You will see your Chamber
pursuing its mission with even more
vigor.
The Chamber cannot be successful if you and your business are not
successful. Therefore, you will see us
heavily engaged in those legislative,
economic development and quality of
life issues that most affect your business. We work with our public offi-
cials to make sure our quality of life is
protected as we work to enhance our
efforts to recruit new jobs as well as
our existing employers to retain and
expand the workforce. These are all
critical components to the future success of our community and our business.
It is important that you know your
Chamber! The Crossville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce
is a private, not-for-profit 501 (c) (6)
organization. It unites companies,
professionals, organizations, groups
and education institutions who are
committed to build a better community. Clearly, most of our members are
small businesses interested in creating
and fostering a healthy environment in
which to conduct business.
But most importantly, the Chamber is people. People such as you - people who realize that through the
Chamber, we can accomplish collectively what no one individual can do
alone. The strength of the Chamber
lies in attracting a great number of
members, thus creating a pool of resources from which to draw ideas, energy and financial support.
As we face the challenges ahead
I would like to thank you as a member for your overwhelming support.
Collectively, your investment and participation in the Chamber provides the
foundation for continued growth and
success.
EXECUTIVE MANAGERS GROUP
James Perry, Chair
U.S. Senator Bob Corker met with
members of the Chamber’s Executive
Managers Group and other business
leaders on Wednesday, October 15 in
an informal presentation of financial
events of the past few months.
Senator Corker told the group that
he had asked to serve on the banking
committee just days prior to financial
crisis that started with failed investment
firms and swept through other segments of the nation’s economic base
like falling dominoes. Senator Corker,
who was elected to the U.S. Senate
in November of 2006, serves on the
banking, energy, foreign relations, small
business and aging committees.
Hard decisions lie ahead, Senator
Corker predicted, but he remains optimistic that with time and diligent effort
on the part of government, financial
and investment companies and tax
payers, the country has better days
around a distant corner.

24/7 Visitor Information Kiosk
The new 24/7 Visitor Information
Kiosk has been open since June of
this year and has been a huge success. Many tourists, new residents
and locals browse the kiosk daily.
We would like to thank the City of
Crossville for the recent addition of
a city map on display in the kiosk
which highlights area attractions to
direct visitors to area tourist destina-
tions. A special section highlighting
fine and casual dining has also been
added. Here you can find the Crossville-Cumberland County Restaurant
Guide as well as individual brochures
on quality area restaurants. Soon
the Gazebo will be adorned with an
oversized golf ball standing on top of
an oversized golf tee placed in artificial turf. You will also notice a new
sign for the Plateau Information Center facing Main Street. This project
would not have been possible without
the assistance of Progressive Savings
Bank, and USDA Rural Development.
The Cumberland County Master Gardeners will provide landscaping with
a grant from VEC. Stop by 34 South
Main Street and check out the 24/7
Visitor Information Kiosk today!

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
The changing of the guard. The
passing of the torch. It seems every
profession participates in some form of
it. The Crossville-Cumberland County
Chamber of commerce is no exception.
The annual membership meeting was
held August 1st at Forte’s in Tansi.
Janice Hamby, Chamber Chair introduced outgoing Chamber board
members and officers, who each
received plaques for their service.
Outgoing members include Charles
Daugherty, Randy Graham, Charlotte
Medley, Mike Metts, and Bill Startup.
Sam Venable was the guest speaker for the event. Mr. Venable, who is
known for his homespun humor, is a
University of Tennessee graduate, author, storyteller and an outdoor editor
for the Knoxville News Sentinel.
COMING DECEMBER 4th!!!!!!!!!!
HOLIDAY BUSINESS AFTER HOURS!
Janice Hamby stated,
“One of the most frequently
mentioned benefits of membership in the Chamber is
networking, so on a quarterly basis, the Chamber
sponsors a reception funded, and hosted by members
for members to get to know
each other in a relaxed and
comfortable environment.
If you haven’t made a habit
of attending, you’re missing
out on one of the best uses
of your membership investment. It’s not all about making a sale or even meeting
potential customers. Although that would be great,
networking also presents
the opportunity to learn
how other business leaders have been successful
in their business. So come,
not only armed with plenty
of business cards, but also
have your questions ready
for free advice.”
On October 23, 2008,
the Chamber held the quarterly Business After Hours
which was sponsored by
Cumberland County Bank.
This event was the kickoff our 12th Annual “Shop
Crossville First” campaign.
The event was a huge success with over 100 Chamber member representatives
attending.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD
Don Sadler, Vice-Chair
Governor’s Conference on Economic
and Community Development
The Tennessee Governor’s Conference on Economic and Community Development was held in Nashville,
September 15-16th. At the conference Cumberland
County received recognition from Tennessee State
Governor Phil Bredesen for the county’s renewal status
as a Three-Star Community. The Three-Star Program
is designed as a road map to assist local communities
in their effort to achieve excellence in community and
economic development. Participating communities are
guided through a comprehensive plan of essential criteria developed by local economic development professionals and a cooperative collaboration of various
state agencies. These combined efforts have made the
Three-Star Program an important component of our
state’s economic strategy.

PROJECT ARROW
The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development sent an RFP to the Crossville-Cumberland
County Chamber of Commerce in June regarding a permanent site for National Scout Jamborees. Conceivably the
investment could be $100 million and would be completed
within five years from the date of site selection.
In September the Chamber received a letter from the Boy
Scouts of America stating “On behalf of Scouts and Scouting Volunteers across America, I offer my heartfelt appreciation for your efforts in Project Arrow. Your contributions have
been an important part of our process in selecting the site for
our future national scout jamborees”.
“We greatly appreciate your participation in this site selection process. Unfortunately your site was not selected for
further consideration”. The Boy Scouts organization sent a
commemorative Norman Rockwell print depicting a Scout’s
return from a great camping experience.

RETAIL TRADE DIVISION
Jerry Wood, Vice Chair
Chamber Announces 12th Annual
“Shop Crossville First”
Current economic conditions make it more important
then ever to think about where you spend your hard earned
money.
Because local government services depend so much
on local sales tax collections, the annual “Shop Crossville First” campaign of the Crossville-Cumberland County
Chamber of Commerce takes on an even bigger significance this year. One way everyone can help keep property
taxes low is to Shop Crossville First!
And with gas prices still higher then last year, driving less
and shopping locally saves you both time and money too.
“We believe it makes sense and saves dollars,” said
Chamber Board Chair Janice Hamby. “Besides getting
great deals locally, shoppers will save on time and gas by
not driving to places like Knoxville or Nashville to shop. With
the rise of online shopping, customers might be swayed to
stay at home altogether, but the Internet is hardly an alternative to the warm, friendly, face-to-face service that our
local businesses can offer. Plus, with all the high shipping
costs and the long wait for your purchases to arrive, it’s
so much easier to go around the corner to your favorite
store.”
With shopping locally a priority for the whole community, this year the program’s visibility will be raised with billboards featuring pictures of those who protect and serve
the community thanks to our sponsors and Flynn Sign
Company. The billboards show individuals representing
community police and fire protection as well as teachers,
all professions that are funded through local sales tax revenues. (Photos provided by Jim Young)
“Keeping tax dollars in Crossville and Cumberland
County also supports local businesses that employ our
friends and neighbors,” explained Jerry Wood who chairs
the Chamber’s Retail Development Division. Wood added
that 123 businesses supported the “Shop Crossville First”
program last year.
Shoppers can start looking for the “Shop Crossville
First” logo on Thanksgiving, November 27, 2008. Aside
from finding great deals on holiday gifts, participating businesses will also have registration forms and boxes. This
year, twenty $100 gift certificates from participating merchants will be won. Five gift certificates will be drawn each
Monday on December 1,8,15 and 22.
Wood and Hamby both expressed their thanks to this
years corporate sponsors, The Bank of Crossville, Cumberland County Bank, First Bank, First National Bank of Tennessee, Progressive Savings Bank and Highland Federal
Savings and Loan for support and assistance with supply
expenses, and thank you to all Crossville businesses for
their support.
For more information or to participate in the program,
contact the Chamber at 484-8444. Media coverage will
be provided by the Crossville Chronicle, Glade Vista, PEG
Broadcasting and JWC Broadcasting.
