the show.
Photography is welcome, for your personal enjoyment only. Thank you for

Raffle Quilt
This year’s raffle quilt is “Feathered Roses.” Based on a traditional block used in Rose
Kretsinger’s 1929 New Rose Tree quilt, “Feathered Roses” revives the art of classic red and
green applique quilts. It measures 85 inches square and was quilted by Cynthia Clark. We are
extremely appreciative of Painted Pony ‘n Quilts for their generous donation of the fabric used
to create this quilt.
Lakeview Quilters Boutique
Our boutique offers handmade items created by our members. This is a great place to pick up
gifts for family and friends, not to mention yourself. Please enjoy our very talented members’
skills.
Silent Auction
There are baskets and little quilts available to win at our Silent Auction. Bidders enter their
written bids on bid sheets located near each item. Friday’s bidding will end at 5pm. Saturday’s
bidding will close at 3:30pm. This is a great opportunity to acquire high-quality items not

About the Judges
Marcia Kaylakie is an author, quilt collector, teacher, judge and appraiser. In addition to
exhibiting her quilts at the IQA Festival she has served as a consultant and liaison from her
guild to the exhibit, Quilts: Storytelling One Stitch At A Time at the Texas Memorial Museum
and has curated the quilt exhibit Eye of the Needle, at the Quattro Gallery in Austin. Her
book, Texas Quilts and Quilters-A Lone Star Legacy, has received the Writers’ League of
Texas Violet Crown Award in non-fiction for 2008.
Marcia’s lectures and workshops on American Quilting and History often feature antique and
vintage quilts from her own collection as she shows us how American quilts reflect the social,
political and economic times in American history. She also teaches classes on quilt care,
conservation, storage and documentation.
Marcia is a quilt and quilted textile appraiser certified by the American Quilter’s Society.
She is a member of the Professional Association of Appraisers– Quilted Textiles where she
currently serves as 2nd vice President in charge of long range planning and education,
the Austin Texas Area Quilt Guild, American Quilter’s Society, the International Quilt
Association, the American Quilt Study Group where she currently serves as Central Texas
Area Representative, and the Alliance for American Quilts.
Dot Collins has been quilting for over 25 years. She loves to machine piece and machine quilt
but has also done hand appliqué and hand quilting in those years. She travels to lecture and
teach classes on her original designs and patterns and also traditional designs for which she
writes and illustrates instructions for innovative and efficient sewing. Most recently, she is
known for her longarm machine free-motion quilted feathers and other designs.
Dot lives in Port Neches, Texas (90 miles east of Houston). She has a degree in Chemistry and
retired as Superintendent of Quality Services at Huntsman Corp. in Jefferson County. She is
an active member of the Golden Triangle Quilt Guild in Beaumont, and has served the guild
as President, Vice President, Retreat chairman, Newsletter Editor, Style Show chairman, Quilt
Show chairman, and Auction chairman at various times. She is a member of four bees in the
guild. One of those, the “Blockheads”, made the 1993 Houston donation quilt - a “Baltimore
style” appliqué quilt.
Dot has judged numerous small quilt shows during the past 15 years and she also judged the
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo quilt contest in multiple years. In 2011, she served as a
judge for the Baytown Quilt guild show and will serve as a judge for the Austin Quilt Guild
and the Lakeview Quilt Guild in 2012.
Dot says that “Quilting is my passion and quilters are wonderful friends. I believe that
everyone who wants to make a quilt can do so. I also believe that entering your quilt in a quilt
show is important in that you are sharing your talent and creativity, inspiring others, learning
from the feedback you get from the judge(s), and possibly winning a ribbon in the process.”

Finally! This group effort of long ago
grew out of a block exchange that was
dreamed up at Fall Retreat. The group
was challenged to use only stars with
a true blue indigo color on all white
backgrounds. Although I am not certain
of the origin of many of the stars I believe
Carol Doak paper pieced patterns are
prevalent. The central triple star as well
as the overall quilt design are mine.

I used a black and gold antique script

Beyond the Rainbow
“Beyond the Rainbow” was my first
experience with a Niemeyer pattern.
The book of techniques was logical,
well explained, and more than a bit
challenging. However, as with all projects
- it always comes back to the fabrics we
choose. The batiks used in this quilt
are reminiscent of multicolored sherbets
and complimented the intricacies of
the pattern. It will soon live with my
Granddaughter Isabelle in Denver CO.

A friend and I purchased this quilt kit
together from Pinwheels and Posies.
She had just built a new home in College
Station. My friends and I went there for a
quilt retreat. The pattern made two quilts
at one time with different colorways. Liz
sewed one and I the other. . It was great
fun for both of us to be working on the
same quilt kit and see the two different
looks that were made. Lots of fun,
fellowship, food, and memories were had
by all. We are truly Birds of a Feather.

I felt that the quilt should have a compass
(signifying her choosing a direction) and
a star to remind her to always reach for
the stars. The colors, of course, would
be her choice. I went on a search to find
out how to make a compass star. I didn’t
have too much quilting experience so I
went back to the person who taught me
how to make my first quilt, Linda Wells
of Sew Contempo. Linda pointed me in
the direction of Judy Niemeyer patterns,
she felt her patterns were complete and

I changed the border. The original had

In 1853, Serena Tucker made a traditional
4-block red and green tulips-in-a-vase
quilt for her marriage. Several friends
revived the tulip block she used, adding
their own unique touch. I chose to use
red, gold, and teal for my tulips, set on a
cheddar background. I hated the results
until I decided to “dress up” the quilt with
some very formal, structured quilting.

Sue Garman drafted this vase of tulips
based on an antique quilt. We were
challenged to take her draft and interpret
it to our own liking and style. I made my
blocks four inches and then arranged
them in a papercut style, set them on
point and called it a quilt.

I made this quilt for our bee challenge.
We each agreed to take a 12” antique
red and green tulip vase block and adapt
it as we saw fit. I had pieced the top a
couple of years ago intending to add an
appliqued vine. So, I killed 2 birds with 1
stone. I included 6 tulips in the vine and I
completed a UFO !

I am an avid golfer so I decided to create
my theme around that joy in my life. I
thought it was a fun way to interpret
the “Birds of a Feather” theme for this
year’s quilt show. I was so happy to find
the golf course theme fabric and then
made each “sand trap” display some
item that is needed to play the game of
golf. Meandering the cart path down the
quilt provided a little movement to pieced
background.

Blue Birds in My Garden combines my
favorite hobbies: gardening; cross stitch;
and quilting. The completed cross stitch
pieces were just waiting for a project.
The Ultimate Guild Challenge “Birds of
a Feather” diminished my unfinished
projects by one! Adding smaller cross
stitch pieces completed larger blocks in
the quilt. Look for the feathers in the
garden hats that add an additional bit of
playfulness.
Our nephew, Lawson Mayer, age
11, participated in US Open Races
in Houston last summer. This quilt
shows him in the largest sailboat and
commemorates his experience. The flags
spell his name and Houston 2011 in the
Nautical Flag Alphabet. This is my entry
for the Guild Challenge.

There Is Always One
Quilter: Marsha Robinson
It seems that there is always one weed
in every garden. Life seems to mimic
this trend. Sometimes just as things
are beautiful and going well a challenge
occurs and tries to take over everything.
Just as weeds can take over if left
untended in a garden, a life challenge can
take over and block the beauty in living.
There are four birds quilted in the quilt
and several feathered hearts. There are
at least two or more of every design items
flocking together except the dandelion
weed.

Inspired by my trip to Africa, I made this
quilt to participate in a guild challenge
“Out of Africa”. I used embroideries made
by South African women. The backing is
a fabric I bought at a roadside booth in
Tanzania.
I had an opportunity to go to Kenya, Africa
and I wanted to make a quilt to celebrate In 2011 our guild competed in the AQS
that trip. I was most impressed with a
Ultimate Guild Challenge. The rules are
giraffe, the long necks and their grace.

This was part of a group “gossip”
challenge. The originator made a quilt
based on a photograph and gave the
quilt, but not the photograph to the next
person. Each quilter in turn saw only one
quilt, and the one I saw was of a flower.
I was inspired by the work of Susan
Carlson to interpret what a Northern-style
spring feels like--flowers zipping out from
under the snow of winter.
807
My daughter-in-law, Laura Dean, was
inspired to design this quilt based on my
love of music as well as some artwork
I own by the artist Dorit Levi of Tel Aviv.
Laura created a picture of the design
using computer software and I then made
this quilt based on the picture. It was my
first attempt at creating a quilt based only
on a picture.

On Renegade’s Walk
Quilter: Errol A. “Pete” Hughes Jr.
This art quilt was inspired by Pete’s
morning walks with our dog Renegade.
The egret doesn’t fly off any more. When
Pete stops to watch the egret, Renegade
sits and watches as the egret walks
slowly and deliberately into the water.
As the egret’s legs get shorter and an
upside down egret appears in the water,
Renegade’s curiosity turned to concern,
fueled by confusion. Carolyn appliqued
Pete’s original designs to the quilt top.
Pete covered up the entire quilt with
much, much Fil-Tec thread.

This quilt was a result of an exercise to
use two colors randomly drawn and one
word. My colors were blue and silver
and the word was “connection”. I feel
very connected to the stillness of a winter
landscape and the blue and silver colors
were perfect for inspiration for the fabrics
chosen. I love using texture by felting
and adding yarns to give dimension to a
piece.

I signed up for a border class with Winnie
Fleming in 2010, this quilt is the result of

and gave me so much help. I liked the
outcome.
I fell in love with the richness of the colors

a group of talented designers working
together in a flock. I used fabric designed
by Kaffe Fassett and others in his design
studio in a New York Beauty class I
took from Karen K. Stone, and added
the feathered star pattern designed
by Sue Garman for The Quilt Show.
Unfortunately, the quilt made me design
borders all around, so it ended up too big

beads and ribbon, in part to disguise a

I have always enjoyed the process of
the cathedral window quilt. There is no
batting required but instead the “squares”
are folded and pieced by hand and then
inlayed with 2” squares. I have dedicated
this quilt to my grandmother, Mema, who
was an amazing quilter and seamstress.

A workshop with George Siciliano to
learn foundation piecing in Estes Park,
CO back in 2008 was a great learning
experience. The class was fun and
sewing together 1003 tiny pieces of fabric
turned out to be fun also. I choose the
fabrics from George’s line and he liked
my quilt so much that I now see on the
internet that he has also made it in “my”
colors. His quilt was originally done in
reds and greens.
This was made completely with scraps
left over from several projects.
I was challenged by a friend to submit
a miniature quilt for the show. Once I
started making the quilt I was inspired
to make several other miniatures! I am
hooked!

This is a two-sided quilt done as a

the challenge of crossing boundaries/

side challenges those in poverty to live up
to their dreams. The fabric was crafted by
poverty-stricken young women in Mali.

The center circular wheel (taught by
Michelle Watts using a 9 degree ruler)
was the starting point of this quilt. The
colors of the fabrics used spoke of the
American southwest, the rest followed.
Using native American fetishes, icons and
a dream catcher helped to develop the
theme of “Birds of a Feather”.
My “Roseville” began from Maggie
Walker’s pattern. I designed more flora
and fauna including the entire border.
I added hand embroidery, ribbon
embroidery, and beading; there is even
some machine embroidery and hand
inking. Some of these vases are still
being made today by Roseville Pottery;
however, none are as elaborate as those
in Maggie’s pattern. The quilt looks great
in my living room with my newly acquired
vases nearby!

This quilt was made from a Judy

design is a great bat motif in which the
wings mirror the curve of the apple core
block.
.No faces appear on the people; since
the Amish believe “that the eyes are the
windows to the soul and only God can
create a soul.” This quilt represents
my mother’s grandparents who raised
12 children and 43 grandchildren! My
mother, Theresa Jones, commissioned
this quilt to honor her mother, Flois
Toten. Each of the twelve children is
painted in the career that best depicted
their life. The heart bears the name and
anniversary date of their spouse.
Circle of Flowers was started in a LQG
workshop taught by Michelle Watts, a
scrap reduction workshop using a 9”
wedge ruler. My goal was to reduce my
floral scrap stash which was overflowing.
But I gathered floral prints from friends
to add more variety. So, my floral stash
is still abundant! A neutral background
worked best for the flowers. Robin Irvine
completed the floral theme with the
beautiful quilting. See if you can find the
dragonflies she tucked into the quilting
design!

This quilt was originally made by Florence
Peto, a quilting, in 1950. It is in the

Using her quilt as inspiration, I designed
the applique border and took significant
liberties with her applique designs (she
used broderie perse techniques). This
crib quilt now appears to belong in the
1930’s, although the fabrics I used are
new. I free-motioned the feather-style
quilting on my home sewing machine. I
display it as a wall-hanging.

I made this small wall hanging from a
bluebonnet & paintbrush pattern created
for LQG by Martha Nordstrand. She
taught the technique in a workshop she
did for us in 2011. Martha’s method
utilizes label paper for templates for the
tiny pieces of fabric, glue, and very tiny
screwdrivers to aid in turning the edges.
It took a lot of evenings by the TV to
complete but I’m quite pleased with the
result and plan for the piece to hang in

A World of Santas
Hand Appliquéd quilt - 2 or more persons
Quiltmaker(s): Carol Roeder, Denise
Green
Quilter: Denise Green
This was a first Saturday from
Quakertown Quilts. I finally finished it last
year and had it quilted. Although applique
is one of those “bad words” for me, I feel
like I improved greatly as I hand sewed
each Santa. I look forward to having
it hang in my entry hall this Christmas
(finally!).

Quilter: Cynthia Clark
I started with a Block of the Month from
Common Threads of Waxahachie, TX.
I replaced all of the pieced blocks with
appliqued blocks. I drafted the smaller
blocks. Sue Garman drafted the large
center block of Potted Tulips. It is called
the Carrie Hall Sampler because all of the
blocks are based on designs by Carrie
Hall.

were sewn and embellished by the
craftswomen of Sri Lanka, an island off
the tip of India. I bought them over the
internet as I try to support women who
have to earn their living by needlework.

The quilt was made in response to a
challenge issued by me,Patty Mayer, to
the Kindred Spirits Bee to design some
whimsical wine labels as if the wine came
from a small town in Texas. The response
was 13 blocks for some interesting and
obscure Texas towns. The size was
dictated by a space I had in my kitchen
where the quilt would hang. I designed
the setting after receiving the finished
blocks

The bones on the border are the names
of the dogs we have had.
This is my first Baltimore Album quilt.
While the first squares I made were
mainly to learn and practice various
applique techniques, as the quilt squares
increased in number, I began to give
thought to how to commemorate my
family through the quilt - my parents,
my husband’s parents, our two sons
and daughters-in-law, and our precious
grandchildren. All of the “family” blocks
hold special meaning and memories for
me. This is also my first quilt to be hand
quilted.

The Quilting Friends “Pass Around”
project began in Spring 2009. Each
member chose a theme and described
their design. They provided the fabric
for their blocks and any special fabric
needed. Every 6 weeks we passed the
projects to the next person in the circle.
One and one half years later, it came
back to the owner for completion.

I took a picture of a pagoda when we
were visiting the Emperor’s Summer
Palace in Beijing, China. In April 2002, I
returned from my trip and started making
this quilt off the picture I had taken. It
took me a while as I did Ruth McDowell’s
method of piecing. This is a remembrance
of my trip.
This quilt was inspired by Marsha
McCloskey’s Feathered Star books and
her bias stripe technique for making
small half square triangle units (there are
2 different sizes of HST units that are
1/8” different in size). Winnie has taught
this method and this quilt was the class
sample. The quilt combines everything
that Winnie loves about quilting - stars
and intricate piecing.

This quilt is the result of a round robin
within my Bee. In this round robin each
center medallion was completed by the
owner/originator of the quilt and then
passed on to the next person in line. We
included the center block, fabric, and
any other written information we wanted
passed forward for inspiration. We
had about 2 months to do each round
and did not see our quilt top until it was
completed.
