From the Pastor Allow me to introduce myself... Hello Carmel Lutheran Church, my name is Scott Giger. This is my chance to introduce myself – or more euphemistically, for you to inspect the new car you just purchased. I suppose I am something of an SUV… I was born in Louisville, KY in 1976, the youngest of Bob and Barb Giger’s four children. I am also the biggest and best-looking (one out of two isn’t bad!). My father was opening/managing manufacturing plants when I was born, so we moved quite a bit. Before I was four, we moved from Louisville to Lewistown, PA, back to Louisville and then to Lakeville, MA. Home is Lakeville. I attended most of my schooling there and my parents still live there. We were very active in my home church, Lutheran Church of the Way, in Raynham, MA. My dad believed that if the church doors were open, you should be inside. Usually he was opening them! Before I was ten years old, my pastor, Lyle Fritsch, began telling me that I was going to become a pastor. He let me preach during a worship service for the first time when I was twelve years old. I learned to love Jesus and His church through the influences of my family and that congregation. I spent my junior year of high school as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Caracas, Venezuela. I discovered quickly how important my faith was to me. The lessons that I learned during that year were invaluable – including confidence that I was going to go into pastoral ministry. I enrolled at Concordia University (then College)–Ann Arbor as an American History/political science major. I wanted to make sure that 2 February 2014 I would be skilled in all topics that one is never supposed to discuss in public. During my college years I played basketball, baseball, and ran cross country. Most importantly, I met my future wife, Kate, (nee Bogema) there. I enrolled at Concordia Seminary-St. Louis following graduation and married Kate between my first and second years of seminary. From l to r: Micah, Kate, Emma, Andrew, & Pastor Scott Giger The third year of seminary is normally vicarage, a year of pastoral internship in a local congregation. I was sent to Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ under Pastor Joseph Meyer. Kate and I enjoyed our time there and were very warmly embraced by the congregation. We returned to St. Louis for my fourth year of seminary and received our first Call to St. John Lutheran Church in Dublin, OH, a suburb of Columbus. Emma was born in February 2003. After serving there just eighteen months, my vicarage congregation Called. Though it had only been a short time, we felt very strongly that God was leading us back to the desert. Off we went. At Hosanna, I served first as associate pastor and then as senior pastor. We had an interesting season of ministry there – learning from and leading many wonderful people. Our son Andrew was born in Arizona in 2005. In the summer of 2007, the Lord led us to St. Luke Lutheran in Ann Arbor, MI. They were getting serious about multi-site ministry, incorporating their third and fourth sites. My Call was to be the site leader for the third site, the University Lutheran Chapel. The ULC was a re-start. After nearly dying out, a partnership was created to renovate and recreate the ministry. They put in a full service coffeehouse, “The Common Cup”, in the lower level. It is the “side door” of the ministry, a place where people, especially students, can connect to our ministry in an non-intimidating way. The Chapel has been a great success story. Our limiting factor is space and parking (sound familiar?). Now worshiping 250 people, the ministry continues forward with the simple but bold mission of “ministering with the love of Jesus to the university community.” Our son, Micah, was born in 2010. During my time of ministry, I have had some unique opportunities. From January to June 2013, I was the transitional campus continued on next page Pastor’s Letter Worship in February continued from previous page February sermon series: “Light for the Path” pastor for Concordia UniversityAnn Arbor, leading and coordinating daily chapel services and worship events. I served as Bible Study Leader for the 2007 and 2010 National Youth Gatherings. I have served as a speaker at District Youth Gatherings in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. Three times I have been privileged to serve as a dean at Camp Arcadia in Michigan. Each one of those has been uplifting and rewarding. We are looking forward to making our fourth visit to Camp Arcadia in August. This month, we continue our sermon series “A Light for the Path”. The season of Epiphany focuses on the light of Christ which has come into our world. We know that Christ is the Word of God made flesh, and it is that Word that directs us as disciples. His Word shines light on our path. We will examine the path of discipleship this month as the Word of God shines light on the topics of Praise, Service, Fellowship, and Bible Study. That brings us to the present and Carmel Lutheran Church. We are excited about the possibilities of what God will do with multi-site ministry. At each step of our journey, we have seen God’s faithfulness through the good and the bad. I have learned through testing to love Jesus and to ask Him to help me love others the way that He does. The result is an optimism for the church in the face of the naysayers who say that the church is irrelevant. I believe Jesus is lifted up to draw all to Himself. He calls us to live real lives of faith so others might see and ask the reason for our hope. Jesus has placed a great trust in our hands! So that’s me – in a bunch of facts and locations. I haven’t even spent time sharing my love for the World Champion Boston Red Sox, wine making (I’m still learning), basketball (I’m getting worse with age), golf (I have never even seen a hole-in-one), or breathable oxygen (just wanted to see if you were still reading). Those stories will come as we journey together. Our family is glad to be a part of yours. Peace in Jesus! ~ Pastor Scott • Feb. 1/2 – “A Light for the Path of Praise” (Luke 22:22-32), Pastor Brunette • Feb. 8/9 – “A Light for the Path of Service” (Matt. 5:13-20), Pastor Brunette • Feb. 15/16 – “A Light for the Path of Fellowship” (Matt. 5:5:21-37), Pastor Schumm • Feb. 22/23 – “A Light for the Path of Bible Study” (Matt. 5:38-48), Pastor Giger February’s Statements of Faith Each 8th grader is in the process of sharing his or her “Statement of Faith” with the congregation during Sanctuary and Worship Center services, in preparation for their Rite of Confirmation on March 29. This year, 42 8th grade students participate weekly in Sunday School, Confirmation classes, and other fellowship and servant activities. Please greet and affirm these students in the months to come as they share their faith with us. Following are those giving their statements in February: Feb. 2 (8:00) Morgan Hitchcock (10:35) Alec Iverson Feb. 8 Feb. 9 (5:00) (8:00) (10:35) (10:45) Julia King Jeremy Klotz & Olivia Kreiger Nicholas Lawson Jennifer Layton & Blaine Ledbetter Feb. 16 (8:00) Jackson LeRoy (10:35) Katherine Long (10:45) Aaron McGhiey Feb. 22 (5:00) Jacob McMurry Feb. 23 (8:00) Frances Miller & Hallie Moeller (10:45) Nicholas Ogden & Ashley Oyer February 2014 3 Fishers Ministry Site Fishers Ministry Site Update At a special voters’ meeting on January 12, the congregation affirmed plans to pursue the purchase of 18 acres of land in Fishers, just west of the intersection of 116th Street and Olio Road. The property, in an excellent location in one of the fastest growing communities in Central Indiana, is available to Carmel Lutheran at a reasonable price with flexible terms. There is still a large percentage of the population in Hamilton County that is unchurched, and this site in Fishers can serve as a wonderful second ministry site for Carmel Lutheran. The acquisition of this property is the result of years of prayer and planning surrounding a second ministry site possibility. This new site certainly represents a God-sized opportunity and a God-sized challenge. As we look ahead to this opportunity and challenge, we also remember God’s faithfulness to His people throughout history and to His disciples here at Carmel Lutheran for more than 35 years. The staff and leadership of Carmel Lutheran Church are very excited about this opportunity and they invite and encourage each disciple to learn more about it. If you weren’t able to attend one of the information sessions held at the end of January, you can still learn more by visiting the information tables located outside the Sanctuary and the Worship Center. Governing Board members will be available there to share information with you and respond to your questions and concerns. We pray that as you learn more you will share our enthusiasm and look for a way to be involved. Teams will soon be formed to address all the work that will need to be completed to bring the plan for a second ministry site to fruition. These teams include: • Ministry Visioning Team – What should the ministry activities be at the new site? • Finance Team – How will we fund this new ministry opportunity? • Facilities Team – What do the ministry facility and master plan look like? • Prayer Team – How can we continually cover this entire effort with prayer? If you would like to serve on one of these teams, please contact Pastor Luther ([email protected]), Bruce Williams (bwilliams@ carmellutheran.org), or Jane Callahan (748.2386) for more information or to volunteer. Watch future newsletters, weekly eNews, and CarmelLutheran.org for updates and progress reports! 4 February 2014 FAQs about Fishers site Why Fishers? It is estimated that 58% of the Fishers community is not connected to a Christian Church. We believe God is leading us to the east, creating an outpost for reaching the Fishers Community with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Also, We currently have more than 1,000 disciples crossing the White River from Fishers to attend church. A CLC Fishers place of worship will give some of our current disciples an opportunity to be involved closer to their homes, while at the same time opening up needed space for further growth at our Main Street and Gray Road campus. What about our land to the west at 156th Street and Towne Road? This remains a viable ministry site once residential and commercial development reaches that far north. Currently, building cost is prohibitive until major utilities become viable. According to Westfield officials, this may be several years out. What about Journey Lutheran Ministries? We do and will continue to wholeheartedly support this ministry with people, time, money, and other needed resources. We believe that there is room for multiple successful LC-MS churches in this part of Hamilton County. And, Journey is most likely not at its final location. It may move further north and/or east. Care Ministry Stephen Ministry matches Super Bowl experience “Before I retired from coaching, my team was in the Super Bowl six times. I thought nothing would ever match that. Being a Stephen Minister has also been one of the greatest experiences in my life,” says Bill Arnsparger of Torrey Pines Christian Church in La Jolla, California. Arnsparger was defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers before retiring in 1994. After completing the 50 hours of required training, he was assigned to a care receiver. They have been meeting together for two years and are moving towards closure now. “My care receiver has helped me so much more than I’ve helped him,” Arnsparger says. “I always benefit from our time together. He’s inspired me to build my faith. My job is to listen and to care. God takes care of the rest. “I find serving as a Stephen Minister very rewarding,” says Coach Arnsparger, who encourages others to serve. “It’s an opportunity to work with people and really help them.” Are you interested in serving your brothers and sisters at CLC as a Stephen Minister? Carmel Lutheran Church will be starting training sessions for new Stephen Ministers this spring. Please contact Karen Swayze ([email protected], 846-6314) or Leon Freeland ([email protected], 679-8838) if you have questions or want to be included in this training opportunity. February 2014 7 Outreach Ministry Habitat for Humanity house dedication A celebration on December 19, 2013, concluded more than two months of hard work! On that night, the Habitat for Humanity house that many of you worked on last fall, was dedicated. A number of CLC disciples attended this dedication, and Pastor Max Murphy gave the devotion and prayer. The house recipient, Joyce Randolph, is a single mother of seven children, three of whom are still at home. She was able to surprise her children with this house for Christmas! In all, 67 CLC volunteers put in 449 volunteer hours at the house between October and November 2013. Many thanks to Sandy Culbertson for all her hard work and time in leading Carmel Lutheran through this project! Learn to “plarn”! How do you get from this... ...to this? Have you been bringing your plastic bags to Carmel Lutheran? If so, thanks! We appreciate the great response we’ve been getting to this Blitz project, “Homeless MATters”. Ask your friends for their bags, too! (Bags may be dropped off in the collection box in the gym.) • The Homeless MATters Blitz Outreach project is an effort by Carmel Lutheran and Christ Church Cathedral (downtown Indy, on the Circle) to supply the homeless with sleeping mats – a cushioned, warmer sleeping option. These mats are made by crocheting cut-up plastic bags. (Each mat takes 500-700 bags.) Sandy Culbertson, CLC’s Habitat project coordinator; Randy McNight, construction manager; Joyce Randolph, house recipient; and Dave Reed, Outreach Team Leader As we continue to collect those bags, we’re ready for the next phases of this project, making “plarn” (plastic yarn) and crocheting mats! If you want to help with this service project, you are invited to come to a “Learn to Plarn” class on Monday, Feb. 10, in room 101B. Choose from either the 1 p.m. or the 7 p.m. class. It will only take you a few minutes to learn how to make plarn, and if you like, how to crochet mats. Then, feel free to stay and work as long as you are able. No need to register – just show up! Please bring the following to the class: • Fairly sharp scissors • Crochet hook, if you like – size N or P (some crochet hooks will also be available) • A bag of bags, if you have them • A friend! Dixie Spiller, Shirley Yager, and Barb Potts presented blankets to Joyce that the CLC Sewing for Missions group had made for her and her family. 8 February 2014 Can’t come to a class, but want to learn how? We need lots of people (of all ages) to help with cutting bags – it’s even something you can do while watching TV! Check out the display in the gym and see how to make plarn. (Or, click here to download instructions.) For more information, contact Sandy Culbertson (846.5708, [email protected]) or Cathy Klemm (814.4252, [email protected]). Outreach Ministry A 2014 Blitz project: Kids Against Hunger, March 1 Once again, Carmel Lutheran will be working with Kids Against Hunger by packaging meals for them. On March 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gym, we’ll be assembling a specially formulated mix that will help feed the hungry both in the U.S. and around the world. Each package can provide six nutritionally complete meals that cost only 25 cents per serving. Over the last four years, CLC has donated a total of 201,784 packets to Kids Against Hunger! This year, our goal is to assemble 80,000 food packets. To do that, we need your help! Participants of ALL ages and abilities are needed to mix and measure the food, package it, then box and load them for delivery. This is a great service project for a family to do together, and even young elementary-aged kids can help! We can – and will! – find a task for everyone that participates. Sign up for a shift Last year’s Kids Against Hunger event at CLC had people of ages helping! We are offering two shifts on March 1: • 9-11:30 a.m. • 1-3:30 p.m. To sign up for this project, log onto CLC Connect (carmellutheran.ccbchurch.com), then more>forms> All Church: Kids Against Hunger. (Click here if reading the electronic newsletter.) You may also sign up at church at a Kids Against Hunger table outside the Sanctuary and Worship Center any weekend in February. For the first time, food packaged at CLC will be sent to Guatemala! Guatemala has some areas of extreme poverty and food is desperately needed. On one of our future trips to Guatemala, we may even assist in helping to distribute the Kids Against Hunger food. Funds are needed to support this Blitz event. This year, our goal is to raise $8,000 to help supplement the cost of the food ingredients and shipping. If you can’t be there on March 1, but still want to donate, log on to CLC Connect (carmellutheran.ccbchurch.com), then click on give, one-time gift, and select “Kids Against Hunger” from the dropdown menu. (Click here if reading the electronic newsletter.) Or, write a check to Carmel Lutheran Church with “Kids Against Hunger” in the memo line and place it in the donation boxes at a Connection Center. A shipment of food from Kids Against Hunger being unloaded in Guatemala. We hope you prayerfully consider volunteering for this Blitz event. Together we can make a difference and help to eliminate hunger! Hmmm… wonder what it tastes like? Have you wondered what this rice mix tastes like when it’s cooked? It’s good! Go to the Gym on Sunday, Feb. 16, before Bible Study/Kids Kount time and try a sample! February 2014 9 Music Ministry Welcome, Dave Christian! I am back to work and rejoice at the continued opportunity we have in partnering together in the blessed work and ministry of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. After a period of observation and testing, doctors have concluded that a very small clot happened to plug a tiny vessel in my heart which is what brought about the heart attack and the sudden cardiac arrest. As such, an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) was not necessary in my case. Now, with medication and some common sense, I am free to return to a full and active life. Again, please join with me in giving thanks to the Lord for those whom He used to graciously tend to my immediate needs: Ernie Verbarg and Eric Nelson who were the first to assess the situation and Pastor Dan with Crew C, Carmel Firehouse #44 take charge. Pastor Max Murphy who was immediately on the phone to 911. Jackie Renick who flew to my side and performed CPR, followed by Pastor Max. Marc Zollner and Jake Gerber who sprinted to get the AED (automated external defibrillator). And the men from Carmel Fire Department C Crew (Station 44) who were by my side in three minutes: FF/EMT-P Brad Allen, LT/EMT-P Jim Foster, FF Scott Woodburn, FF Erik Thordarson, Engineer Jeff Grimes, and FF/EMT-P Rick Viehe. And finally, the fine medical staff at the Indiana Heart Center. Thank you also to everyone for your prayers and kind expressions of concern on my behalf! My family and I can never thank you enough for your support, your encouragement, and your being there for us! We give thanks to the Lord for each and every one of you!!! We are so blessed to be part of this wonderful family!!! ~ Pastor Dan Groundhog greetings from Mr B! I’m healing according to plan and will probably be back sometime in February. God is good and He continues to heal me. I want to thank all of you for the prayers, cards, meals, brief visits, and all the support. I want to also thank all of the volunteers and staff who have been covering my daily duties while I have been out. Carmel Lutheran is a wonderful community to be a part of! I’ll see you all soon! ~ Mark Borcherding 12 February 2014 How ‘bout them poinsettias!? Weren’t the poinsettias beautiful during the Advent and Christmas season? We thank those who ordered the poinsettias, and special thanks to the Poinsettia Care Team of Gwyn Borcherding, Marge Kress, and Lesley Pascoe, who kept them watered and healthy. Delicious luncheons We wish to thank the people responsible for the post funeral service luncheon on Thursday, Jan 9. Our sincere thanks to Pat and Bill Nash, Bruce Williams, Susan Koerner, Judy Mihalik, Karen Minniear, and Dixie Spiller. The food was delicious and your efforts are much appreciated. ~ The family of Jerry Hicks We want to thank the ladies who worked to put on such a wonderful luncheon following Al’s funeral. The food was delicious, and it was so nice for our family to be able to visit with others during that time. Again, thank you for everything! ~ The family of Al Kleinschmidt Prayers heard During the 2½ months I was “absent” from church, many of you sent over 40 get well cards. Prayers for recoveries from various complications were raised to Almighty God on my behalf. He heard! Thank you all for your thoughtfulness and kindness. I am now well on the way to normal and am certainly glad to be back. Again, I thank each and every one of you. ~ Charlotte Adams Financial Report CARMEL LUTHERAN CHURCH GENERAL OPERATING BUDGET REPORT July to December 2013 YTD Actual YTD Budget % of YTD Budget Actual Budget Annual Budget YTD Actual Prior Yr Income General Fund Contributions Interest Income KOK Receipts Total Income 1,418,617 3,998 112,119 1,534,734 1,393,000 6,000 108,960 1,507,960 101.8% 66.6% 102.9% 101.8% 25,617 (2,002) 3,159 26,774 2,687,500 12,000 236,760 2,936,260 1,378,570 7,452 129,453 1,515,475 Expenses Personnel (Includes KOK) Properties Debt Service (Interest) Debt Service (Principal) Outreach Outreach (Pending) Subtotal 692,145 183,871 71,135 116,879 113,810 23,492 1,201,332 798,121 192,266 101,590 86,425 137,302 86.7% 95.6% 70.0% 135.2% 100.0% (105,977) (8,395) (30,455) 30,454 (23,492) 1,624,108 363,225 201,146 174,884 268,750 707,001 147,156 102,296 110,718 115,446 1,315,704 91.3% (114,372) 2,632,113 1,182,617 Youth Education Family Ministry Sports Ministry Worship Finance Spiritual Care Discipleship Administration Kids of the Kingdom Subtotal Total Operating Expense Future Expansion Capital Projects/Grants Total Expense 32,023 9,728 6,492 28 11,739 10,802 3,047 11,913 38,586 11,560 135,919 1,337,251 0 0 1,337,251 31,753 12,600 11,360 680 13,420 9,075 2,165 13,040 51,080 10,200 155,373 1,471,077 100.9% 77.2% 57.2% 4.0% 87.5% 119.0% 140.7% 91.4% 75.5% 113.3% 87.5% 90.9% 270 (2,872) (4,868) (652) (1,681) 1,727 882 (1,127) (12,494) 1,360 (19,454) (133,826) 55,082 24,850 20,015 1,580 26,800 18,700 6,265 26,880 91,470 21,700 293,342 2,925,455 22,797 8,389 4,190 592 9,265 7,597 1,371 11,896 46,609 10,198 122,904 1,305,521 0 1,471,077 90.9% (133,826) 15,000 2,940,455 0 1,305,521 197,482 36,883 Income Less Expense Change in Accruals Net Change in Unrestricted Cash 160,600 (4,195) 209,954 3,734 201,216 At the end of December 2013, General Fund contributions were $25,617 higher than budget, and total expenses were $133,826 lower than budget. Expenses were lower primarily due to savings realized from having two open staff positions. At December 31, 2013 our outstanding debt was $3,184,179. However, $1 million of WGOD (When God Opens Doors) funds were used to temporarily reduce the debt. Now that the purchase of the Fishers property has been approved the funds will be recalled and our debt will rise accordingly. WGOD contributions from the beginning of the capital campaign through December 31 were $2,786,255.
