COntents
Ridgeline Judging System (RJS) is a volunteer based team dedicated to the
Pig Hunting Sport. Backed by Ridgeline, the team travel around the country
to provide independent and impartial judges and help the smooth running of
competitions. The team provide judges, scales, marquee, tags and help with
the prize giving. These are great community events for the whole family.
The team also weigh in the 'Two Ton Club' with any pig over 200lbs earning a
custom Ridgeline Two Ton shirt & cap.
RJS has teams in both the South and North Island so we can judge our
competitions the same way throughout the country. RJS is run by Ewan
McKenzie in the North Island and Bill Westwood in the South Island. For

Hi there - I'm Ewan McKenzie and I am responsible for the Ridgeline Judging System in the North
Island. Our team consists of Ross Guy, Syd Bristow, Kadel Heke, Simon McKenzie (my son), Karla
Clark, Terry Bryant, Steve Williams and our latest members based in Napier, Geraldine, Ant and Pat
Edmonds.
Our team is impartial, we don't enter the competitions that we judge, so that puts everyone on a
level playing field. We make sure the competition runs according to the rules - the comp starts at
the specified time and ends at the specified time unless there's people waiting in the queue. We
don't take any nonsense and we play it fair so we are respected throughout the country - that's why so many comps
like to have us judging.
And it's not just about pigs - different comps have different categories which can include deer, hares, possums, goat,
game birds when in season, snapper & trout etc. which we also judge. All age groups enter and it's a great family
event as well as a great way to reduce the pests. In fact, DOC are now on board as a sponsor of some of the comps in
the King Country as they have identified the important part these rural events have to play in conservation.
There's a great deal of organisation that goes on behind the scenes to get these comps running smoothly, from
registration, judging, prize giving through to writing up the highlights and photos for NZ Pig Hunter / More Pork
magazine. I do it as I love the sport and have done for over 50 years. It's a part of our New Zealand lifestyle and I'm
pleased it is still going strong and I'm proud to be involved in it. We are always keen for new judges to join the team,

South Island
My name is Bill Westwood and I run the Ridgeline Judging Team in the South Island. We are here to help out at any
hunting competition in the South Island who want to have independent judges. Our judges are spread out across the
South Island from Peter Lyall and Straty from Tapawera, then we have Andy and Jo Moriarty from Waiau, Matthew
Simmons from North Canterbury, myself along with my two sons Sloan and Bryce from South Canterbury, Craig Gibb
and Sian Waters from Oamaru and in Dunedin we have Richard Hand, Tony Hogg and Phil Simonson. This gives us
judges for the length of the Island to keep up with the growing demand for our team.
On the day of a competition we can help to take some of the pressure off the main organisers as we have a lot of
experience throughout our team. I have handpicked the judges for our team over the years by knowing the hunters
who catch a lot of pigs and getting them to help with the judging as they are the people who know their sport well.
One of the best places to learn about hunting is at pig hunting competitions as there are other experienced hunters to talk to.
I first started pig hunting in 1989 and have been addicted ever since. Watching a young dog grow up to become a good pig dog gives me a lot of
satisfaction. Because of my passion, I have set up a pig dog training facility so that I can help other hunters with the training of their dogs. This
gives me the chance to learn so much more as every dog is different and every hunter is different. How a hunter acts around their dogs will have
a big impact on how their dog turns out later in life, so the more that we can learn about our dogs, the better off they will be.
I believe we have the best sport in the country; pig hunting keeps us fit, supplies us with meat and is a very healthy life style option. However, we are
very conscious of the image we give off to the general public as some people think that we are only out to kill an animal, yet the sport is much more
than that and we hope to show them. Being out on the hill, just human and dogs, taking in our environment and learning things together.

Treat before use with the appropriate leather care product. We recommend using a beeswax based product
which will nourish the leather and prolong the life of your boots.(See local footwear specialist for products
