TKDA has long relied on Deltek Vision for its
financial and project management needs.
Originally founded as the Toltz Engineering
Company in 1910, TKDA holds roots in the
architecture and engineering landscape that are
over 100 years old. After a century of providing
facilities, transportation, energy and water services,
headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, this dynamic
firm has grown to a 220-employee enterprise with
offices spanning the entire United States.
With an ever-growing portfolio of projects and
plans for future expansion, TKDA realized that
business process improvement was a critical
next-step to meet its goals of increasing revenue,
raising profits and growing the firm. TKDA wanted
more visibility across key aspects of the firm –
dashboard capabilities to track and measure its
most important business indicators, better insight
into contract status, a more efficient way to track
employee utilization and a way to empower its
mobile users.

our infrastructure or any need to train our users,
and we were able to get the features we needed to

in our firm.”

able to do a lot more robust reporting, ”said Gratz.
More Insight
TKDA used the solution’s comprehensive
Estimate-to-Complete and Estimate-atCompletion capabilities, giving the firm the
visibility it needed to make sure projects remained
profitable.
Along with ensuring projects are profitable,
TKDA also makes sure its employees are utilized in
the most efficient way making sure its resources
are not idle when there is work to be done and that
the right resource is on the right project.
“We use Resource Planning to track the
human side of our capital and to see where our
people’s statuses are,” Gratz says. “With Resource
Planning, we now know who is billing and who has
too many or not enough hours of future work; and
at the same time, we use it to track where we are
financially on the project.”
By taking advantage of project and resource
planning, TKDA is able to better identify areas of
overruns or potential problems and adjust, even
allowing the firm to proactively notify clients in
cases where scope or services needed to change.
Additionally, this same insight allows the firm to
pinpoint clients requiring additional services. For
TKDA, this insight means more incoming project
revenue than ever before.
More Control
Being able to take advantage of the new Contract
Management features o ered by Vision 7 to track
and monitor contracts in one place was also a
main reason TKDA chose to upgrade.
“Contract Management is a really valuable
tool for TKDA…it’s a piece that we’ve really been
looking forward to implementing for tracking
project amendments, the timeline in which the
amendment came in, and the baseline of the
initial project itself,” says Gratz.
More Mobile
At the same time TKDA upgraded to Vision 7, it
also rolled out Deltek’s new mobile o ering, Deltek
Touch, allowing employees to work wherever,
whenever.
“In our business, we have a lot of ‘road
warriors’, people who often travel far away from
our office,” states Gratz. “Deltek Touch allows
our increasingly mobile employees to service
clients and keep track of their hours while using
smartphones and tablets, instead of dragging a
computer with them wherever they go.”

For TKDA, moving to Vision 7 meant more visibility,
more insight and more control, all with a proven
