Historical and Thematic Associations The property at 390 Lakeshore Road West is one of a number of lakefront estates constructed along the shore of Lake Ontario in the first half of the 20th century. Wealthy families from Toronto and Hamilton were attracted to Oakville’s waterfront, where they built summer homes or country estates on large parcels of former farm land. The Arts-and-Crafts design of the house, the red brick exterior, large chimneys, Classical eaves returns, panelled gable front and window units suggest that the house was built in the 1920s or 1930s. The mapping for this property suggests that a larger original parcel of lakefront property was carved up to create this lot and other smaller building lots to the north between this property and Lakeshore Road West. 7. Contextual Associations As a result of new development, the estate at 390 Lakeshore Road West is one of only two along this stretch of Lakeshore Road West with an associated landscape (the second being 372 Lakeshore Road West, immediately east). 8.
