The duo will present on the topic: “Your Professional Image : Looking and Acting the Part.” The series will open on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at noon in Belcher Hall’s fourth floor auditorium. Parker, a Virginia native is a true Southern belle, having been raised in the small South Carolina town of Cheraw, and home of Jazz Legend Dizzy Gillespie. At a very young age Parker knew she would make an impact on those around her in some way, living out her mom’s daily affirmation, “you are destined for greatness.” Becoming the first African-American female drum major of her high school was just the beginning of her many successes in life. Parker is a college graduate, receiving her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism with a minor in fashion merchandising from the University of South Carolina (USC) in May 2008. Her second “passion for fashion” has caused her to be named one of Columbia’s Janet Parker “Top 10 most Beautiful and Stylish people” during the 2012 Columbia Style Week. Parker prides herself in being professional at all times even in her appearance. She has been asked to judge several local pageants and oratorical contests because of her “image is everything” approach. Parker welcomes opportunities to give back to her community and has emceed several local events including serving as the commencement speaker for Remington College’s graduation. She also reads at local elementary schools, supports the American Heart Association in the fight against heart disease, as well as the American Red Cross in saving lives. When she’s not on the desk or in the newsroom, she’s listening to a wide array of music, or spending time with her family, and friends. Parker’s favorite quote is: No one can beat you at being you. Clervaud joined the WACH Fox team In November 2010. He is no stranger to the Palmetto State, coming to the Midlands from WJBF-TV in Augusta where he covered news in both Georgia and South Carolina. Over the years Clervaud has interviewed Representative Jesse Jackson, Liberia’s 1st female president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and covered the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama, just to name a few. He also traveled to his parent’s homeland of Haiti where he produced a special series on earthquake disaster relief. Clervaud also participated in the B.A.D.D (Black Achievers Determined to Be Different) conference that took place in Columbia, S.C. on February 2012. The conference was aimed at helping young Black males in grades K-12 reach their potential academically, socially, economically and spiritually through workshops Fraendy Clervaud and sessions. Whittaker Library Wants to Hear From You! By Ashley Elliott South Carolina State University’s Miller F. Whittaker Library was recently awarded a $7,500 grant from the HBCU Library Alliance: Library Leadership Program, funded in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The HBCU Library Alliance is a consortium that supports the collaboration of information professionals dedicated to providing an array of resources designed to strengthen HBCU’s and their constituents. As one of seven HBCU’s to be awarded the grant, SC State University will implement the LibQUAL+® survey, a resource for assessing user opinion of Miller F. Whittaker Library library service quality. It is designed around a web-based survey that measures library users’ minimum, perceived, and desired levels of service quality across three dimensions: affect of service, information control, and the library as a place. Adrienne Webber, dean of the Miller F. Whittaker Library, says the overall purpose of the grant is to obtain a formal library assessment that will determine if their services are adequate or needs improving. “We want to always ensure that we are meeting the needs of those we serve,” says Webber. “Looking at the library as an informational resource, we decided that we needed to apply for this grant and access this important data. The results will tell us if we are meeting our mission and with this grant from the HBCU Library Alliance and Mellon Foundation we will be able to formally do just that.” In the upcoming months, the full implementation of LibQUAL+® will be completed and the University’s networking system will randomly administer surveys to users consisting of faculty, staff, students, alumni and visitors to the library. Surveys will also be administered during alumni meetings and selected community events, where University library users may be in attendance. “The survey will be available for a period of three weeks and we will begin implementing changes shortly afterwards based on responses,” notes Webber. “Strategically we will access the needs of our community of users based on the results of the survey. Many of the same individuals who provide suggestions on what we need to do will be contacted to assist us with our new planning strategies.” The library’s staff is working collaboratively with members from other University departments including University Computing and Technology Information Services (UCITS), Institutional Effectiveness, Student Affairs, and University Relations and Marketing, to launch the LibQUAL+® project. Incentives will also be put into place to offer prizes and implement various activities in efforts to get students excited about participating in this effort,” shares Webber. “I hope that this initiative will show that we’re making good strides in being the library that the users want us to be,” expressed Webber. “We hope that it will show that we are user centered, student, faculty, university and assessment driven, in addition to being goal oriented when meeting the needs of our users.” The launch of the Miller F. Whittaker Library LibQUAL+® party will soon be underway. Stay tuned for more details! Previous Page Next Page Peter Lenzo’s Exhibition “Assemblages and Ceramic Sculptures” on Display at SC State University SC State University’s Fine Arts Center Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition by artist Peter Lenzo. The exhibition is currently on view through Friday, September 14, 2012. Lenzo’s mixed media assemblages and ceramic sculptures are exquisitely crafted and very personal works of art. The assemblages, often seen as altars are inspired by those seen in the churches and museums of Europe. While some focus on ideas of faith others are shrines to Lenzo’s three children. The ceramic sculptures are inspired by traditional face jugs especially those produced by Southern slaves. Many of the sculptures express Lenzo’s struggle with severe epilepsy. These often haunting but beautiful pieces express Artistic Exhibition-“Assemblages and Lenzo’s daily battle to be a productive artist, father and human being in the Ceramic Sculptures” by Peter Lenzo face of a debilitating disease that all too often seems to have the upper hand. Lenzo is a New York City native living in Columbia, S.C. He received his MFA from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., and is the founder of Southern Pottery Workcenter and Gallery in Columbia, SC though no longer the owner. The ABC Convention aimed to expand harmonious relationship with the main stream America by articulating and integrating the American democratic and cultural values with the new Bangladeshi-Americans. Hundreds of multicultural writers, poets, academicians, high achieving school and college graduates, diplomats, journalists, Olympians, artists, political activists and community organizers from all over the globe attend the Dr. Shafiqur Rahman ABC Convention each year. Interested in social media, television and media education in the United States and Bangladesh, Rahman spoke on a current media debate topic: “Is New Social Media a Threat to Traditional Print and Broadcast Media,” with assistance from Dr. Rafida Idris, associate professor of Nutrition, Family and Consumer Sciences and Joshua Mims, video supervisor/ instructor in the Mass Communications Program at SC State University. During his keynote speech, Rahman discussed the socio-political challenges that American traditional media face today and how radio and television challenged the print media. “I made the point that the traditional media will continue to grow symbiotically with social media by accepting the new converged model,” stated Rahman. “Integrating computing and internet technologies to create and deliver the news, information and entertainment products to the traditional and social media audiences is the essence of the converged model. It includes digitizing technology, multimedia formats, interactive participation by audience, and unlimited freedom to provide opinions by consumers,” he exclaimed. Nine journalists and media professors from renowned media agencies and universities served as panel discussants during Rahman’s presentation. Rahman is certain that SC State’s faculty, staff and students will benefit from the knowledge gained during the ABC Convention. “Teaching of social media is a current topic in our communications curriculum. Recently, two of our new communications capstone courses, Jour 450 and BC 450, were approved by SC State’s Academic Affairs, Faculty Senate and the Education Policy Council which were based on the new media convergence model presented during the convention.” Click Here For More Information!
