WHAT THE RUNNERS SAID

Thank you and your club for organising a great event last night. I really enjoyed it - despite the
pretty terrible conditions! I've reported on motorsport events at Silverstone on and off for 13
years in all sorts of weather, and I can't recall ever getting that wet there...! So great respect to
you guys, and especially the marshals, who must have got soaked organising it.
I had a great race, I took a minute off my PB (which I set only a month ago), and got under the
40 minute mark - I can now enjoy the next 4 weeks until my 30th birthday and enjoy the races I
have before then without the pressure! Being on the 'other' side of the race, I was proud for
Silson Joggers as to how well the race was organised and marshalled which is a credit to the
club. (Richard Davies)
An EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT evenings running. Huge Thank You to you and your team. You
organised a first class event, couldn't fault a thing - I even weirdly enjoyed the rain. I'll be back
next year 100%. Congratulations on bringing a brilliant evening of running to so many people.
Definitely a memorable race with those weather conditions!! Thank you to everyone involved!!!
Great race again tonight. Better weather for running than marshaling. Special thanks to
volunteers especially the cheer squad at 1 and 6k ish point. Loved it tonight.
Great race in one of the UK's most famous sporting venues! Brilliant race, great support, great
organisation, bargain price. You will not regret doing this race.
2nd year for me and I’ll be back next year. Well organised. Great atmosphere with over 1,000
runners - a real mix from speedsters to fun runners. The (very noisy) band part way round was
uplifting! Recommended.

Great race despite the weather! Thanks to the marshals who stood out in that horrendous
weather to cheer us on! Great organisation and top race for all to enter!
And thank you also to all of those involved in the "Bend of Noise" - it can't have been much fun
spectating last night but they maintained their enthusiasm throughout the evening which
encouraged all runners to keep going!
Although the weather was horrid, the parents and I thoroughly enjoyed the event which was very
well run and supported by marshals and noisy encouragement - all of which were very well
received!
We will definitely be taking part next year and as I am still high from running a serious PB, I am
considering a couple more of the EMPG road running series races. Thanks for the motivation!!!
ON HIS RETURN FROM MISSIONARY WORK – OOP NOORF
On May 6th I took up the chance to run my former 'home' race at Silverstone and beat my age old target of running
under 40 minutes before I turned 30. I had good runs in the past, 2/3 times running low 41 minutes 10Ks but
generally doing 45 minute training runs for the last few years. I had recently broken my PB but not the elusive
40minute barrier at Blyth 10K in April so I knew I was running well.
My preparations were good; plenty of walking during the day at work, a good pasta dinner, but the weather was
determined to do its best to thwart the run.
By running a little late I missed the first rainstorm of the night, but thanks to Chris and Tom I was spared some vital
energy by parking in the VIP spaces. I managed to create a wind sail on the front of my vest (no wife to put my
number on straight and tight - sorry Sarah!).
I failed to do much of a warm up other than jogging around my car a few times - I forgot how tightly packed the
race starts get, so missed my second chance to warm-up at the start line. I put on my new-found Northern elbows to
plot my way through the first few corners and set off into the wind.
I noted the wind direction and where to make advantage of it, as usual the new
start/finish straight leading up Abbey would be the best place.
I think my course knowledge from the Silson winter training and Silverstone Half
races definitely helped - I took the shortest line around the track where I could.
The first lap felt ok and passed reasonably quickly, but it didn't feel too quick.
Sarah reminded me to check my split time then run a quick 2nd lap, but all I could
think in my head when I turned into the wind at Copse and the rain started for the
whole of the final lap was 'at least I have given it my all'.
I used the wind from Club to Abbey to my advantage, as well as using the cheers
from Michael, Maddy and Dan to push me onto the Complex and drive through
the lakes of water before the Silson sprint to the finish - I looked at my watch to
see balloons and a 'Yay, your quickest ever' message which I had to double check
on the pace car, and amazingly I had done it. I can now relax in my remaining
10K race (Beverley 10K on Sunday 10th May) and not have to go to far flung
corners of the UK trying every flat 10K between now and the start of June.
Thank you to all the marshals, the noise corner was a great idea and every Silson
volunteer was a credit to the club. It just shows what training in the hills of
Northumberland and some familiar faces and support can do for your running
times!
Next target - under 35 minute 10K before I am 35. Same progress as the last 5
years, but this will be very hard!

JUNIOR JOGGERS
County Championships
Thank you and well done to all the juniors who took part in the track County Championship in May. We
had the largest ever junior team competing. Next year we MUST aim to send more athletes along as
they are more than capable of competing. Emily Hinton won the U11s 1200m race in a championship
record time. We are absolutely thrilled for Emily and very proud to have a county champion amongst our
junior members. Emily also won silver in the long Jump. Regan won silver in the U15s 200m to match
the medals she won in 2014.It was a fantastic achievement for Regan, as with some of our other juniors,
she was competing against older athletes in her age group.
There were several club records broken during the meeting as well as children setting personal bests.
Thank you to all the parents for coming along to support and to Brian and Julie for leading them team.
Training
We are back at Stowe at 6.30pm on Fridays for four straight weeks in June. It is really important that our
juniors attend every week. HUGE amounts of time go into planning and preparing sessions as well as
organising coaches and leaders to run them. It’s often the case that our leaders and coaches have to
dash from work or cancel other arrangements to ensure that their Silson commitments are fulfilled.
Please make sure every effort is made to attend.
Competition
Our next visit to Oxford for their open meetings for juniors aged 11+ takes place on Wednesday 10th
June. Details of the races on the night can be found here:
http://www.oxfordcityathleticclub.com/files/2015_mwo_advert_entry%20v2.pdf
Thank you to Julie for leading the juniors on this evening. It is a great opportunity for juniors to check
their progress and push for PBs and club records. Please let me know if you are planning on attending.
We need offers of lifts for Eleanor, Millie and Archie if anyone is free to do this.
The Chairman’s Cup in Kettering is an annual event where clubs across the county compete in a team
event against each other for juniors in school years 4 to 7. Last year was our best ever finish where we
came 4th out of 7 teams. This year we are aiming to go one better! But it will need ALL of our eligible
juniors taking part. I will email details in the next couple of days. This year’s event takes place on Sunday
12th July – please add the date to your diary now.
On the same day is the County Mile Championship for all of our older juniors and adults. It’s a great
opportunity for you to race and get lots of support from our youngsters!

With everyone dried out (literally and possibly metaphorically for some, who knows?) from the EMGP
opener at the circuit it was time to actually run one. So - the brave contingent headed to Rugby for round
two and was treated to almost perfect running conditions. For the Rugby virgins amongst the squad –
yes, the start is always like that.
Anyhow, is it just me, or is 6 miles a distance in decline? The Bedford 6 became the Blisworth 5 and the
Daventry 6 found an extra 4 miles somewhere or other to reach double figures. As such, opportunities to
attack that PB are few and far between and in that respect it was a good evening’s work for the Joggers
nd
with some new best times being recorded. Best of the bunch was probably Sue’s 2 category placing
amongst the F50s.
Cheers to Mr Keers - our roving spectator on the night!

SILVERSTONE ROAD RUNNING
CHALLENGE 2015
Results after Round 1
The first race of the 2015 Challenge was run in near perfect conditions with 13 Challengers competing in
the Blisworth 5. Simon Woodward and Andy Field achieved near perfect scores but were trumped by
Shelly and Stephen Maden who played their jokers to great effect.
So congratulations Shelly for taking the initial lead in the Challenge but it is early days and I’m sure that
Simon and Andy won’t let up in their pursuit

RUNNING BACKWARDS OFF THE ROAD
Iron Run – Cranford, Northamptonshire – 2nd May 2015
On Saturday 2nd May the Rose family took on the 6KM Iron Run
OCR in Kettering, Northamptonshire.
We arrived at the event nice and early for the 12.00pm wave. As
we arrived at the event nerves were setting in especially for my
mum and sister, as OCR newbies. Of course Dad and I were
especially reassuring with our past horror stories.
However, as the gun signalled the start of the race nerves soon
disappeared. The course was set in vast hilly woodlands. The
course designer had made good use of all the natural features to
create some demanding obstacles. It wasn’t long before we found
ourselves waist deep in thick, cold bog.
The highlight for all was the 150ft water slide down a seriously
steep hill, into more VERY cold bog. This challenge was a team
effort as we helped each other through bog, over walls and across
the lake.

After the event we were wet, cold and VERY muddy but each of us still had a huge smile on our faces when we
crossed the finish line. This event was well organised and well marshalled. We even got a technical top and medal
after finishing. If you have not tried one of these events, I would highly recommend this as a beginner’s event.

On Friday May 7th 2015 three "young" intrepid Silson ladies travelled to Burghley House, Lincolnshire to join the
Dirty Undies World Record Attempt which saw over 1000 of the participants strip to their undies and scamper for
1km... in preparation for the MAIN event the next day: Rat Race's World’s Largest Assault Course (aka the Dirty
Weekend). The event even made it into the national papers!
At 10.15am on Saturday, Caroline Mackenzie, Julie Long and Kit Rapson donned their race apparel (stripy fishnets
and naughty pants) and set off excitedly in Wave 9 amidst cheers and green smoke to face the 20 miles and 200
obstacles!!!
Over hay bales and hurdles, through empty cars and other barriers we darted. Early on came Julie's favourite, the
first mud crawl ...mud glorious mud... and total immersion!!!! We then gave chase to and howled with the ‘wolves’
in the forest maze, carrying sandbags and logs, water and gravel.
On and on we went, scrambling cautiously over high wooden walls and tyre walls, except in Caroline’s case...she
loved scrambling over every obstacle ‘ninja’-stylie with a broad grin. Ducking, climbing and scrambling over a
various manmade and natural objects found us warming up nicely for the water section!
There was a LOT of water...Kit's favourite!!! (not)...and it was freezing ...chest-high African Queen wading through
reeds, swimming across the reservoir, jumping off pontoons, platforms and waterslides...water cannons...good place
to lose a team mate too!!!! This section pushed us all to our shivering and hypothermic limits as the wind chilled us
to the core!
Refuelling and regrouping done and donning the elusive bin bags we had "borrowed" from the campsite, we
warmed up to face the remaining mileage and wooden obstacles through the woods. Traversing yet more water
across some dodgy canoe pontoons (with a couple of close face-planting moments) saw us getting back "down and
dirty" to crawl uphill under camouflage netting followed by more clambering over walls and scaffolding pole
mazes. They eventually brought us back into Burghley House grounds. There, the breath-taking view from the top

of the hay bales was superb, as was the camaraderie of those taking part, supporting each other. Those handprints
on our pants came in "handy" for being hoiked up and shoved over obstacles and walls...
Then, monkey bars galore (130m of these for the real hard core ninjas)and punishment gates led to the Finish for
Julie and Kit after 5 ½ hours and 13 hard miles. They merrily waved Caroline on, to complete a further 7-8 miles
and 50 obstacles through more water, forest and farmer's field obstacles in another hour and 40 .... all in all we had
spent about 2 1/2 hours out of our times standing and waiting in queues at obstacles, but it meant we got to know
some of our fellow racers and had a laugh, so time well spent!
Fab medals and chocolate laden, (Curlywurly - "get in ma belly") we searched out massages, hot showers and warm
grub! Then we joined in the after party with ASH and Craig Charles Funk and Soul DJ and danced until the early
hours...
Fantastic event, highly recommended, great fun!!! So, who’s ready to go again next year? Juniors get to get mucky
too..."

FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Jim is Champion; Guy runner-up; David J “wins” wooden spoon!
Well that was really close. On the final day of the season Jim drew level on points with Guy, and because he had
made fewer player transfers throughout the season, the rules say that his team is ranked higher. How tight was
rd
that?! I managed to grab 3 place just ahead of last month’s league leader Richard, and Michael, who again were
only separated by player transfers.
th
Heading the race for the honour of top lady was Marie in 8 position, very closely followed by last season’s
th
th
champion Sarah, and Heather, in 9 & 10 places respectively. Top Junior honours went to James who has been
very consistent all season, with Ben just a few positions below him.
At the wrong end of the table David J managed to be the only team in the league to score less than 1,000 points –
quite an achievement that! Mel, Brian, Bob and Adrian managed to safely stay out of bottom place despite
flirting with danger all season.
In the real world we have seen some great survival stories, particularly from Leicester, Villa managed to save
themselves too by finally scoring a few goals, and Newcastle and Sunderland hung on by their fingertips.
Commiserations to Hull for their relegation, and to those who didn’t make the play-offs such as Derby. As for the
Boro losing the play-off final, we didn’t deserve to win on the day, so along with everyone else, hope springs
eternal, that we will all have better success next season.
th
There is no football to enjoy this summer, but the Premier League kicks off again on the weekend of August 8 so
I will issue some details in late July about starting up the league again for the 2015/16 season.
Have a great summer.
