March has been fairly good to us so far and l'veseen a lot of bikes out riding already. However, I can remember some blizzards in early April so we're not out of the woods yet. Next we have to deal with flood season. The forecasts for the Mississippi River levels this spring are ugly. We may get wet feet. A special thanks goes out to everyone who helped with the Chili cook-off March 5th. We set a new record for the number of chili entries (28) and also set a new record for the amount of money raised. ($1,024 ..almost double what we would normally raise) The money was given to the Waukon Fire Department to help them purchase a cutter head for their Jaws of Life. The March chapter meeting was well attended. Most of the discussion involved rides for the season. A Hog Chapter cap was discussed. We decided to purchase a few, provided we could get them without the Velcro closure. Jim announced a new Taco Ride to Guttenberg on June 12th. We stiff have a few open dates on the ride calendar so if you know of a neat destination let one of us know. I plan on fiffing one of the open dates with a Director's ride, with destination stiff to be determined. I just got back from H. O. G. Officer Training (HOT) in Milwaukee and I must say it was worth the trip. (but you couldn't pay me enough to fight that traffic every day) I met hundreds of other H. O. G. Officers from all over the country. I don't know how many people attended the training but it had to be approximately 800. The only time we were all in one room was at the opening and closing ceremonies and at meals. There were more than 100 tables (10 wide by 10 deep) in the dining hall with 8 people per table and it was full. The training was great, the meals were tasty, and the people were friendly. It was more like a big famify reunion than a training class. The fellowship among H. O. G. members is simply phenomenal. I learned that H. O. G. is the largest factory-sponsored riding club in the world. There are 1400 chapters world wide and approximately 1 million members. Harley-Davidson CEO, Keith Wandell, gave a great opening talk and was followed by Company Vice President, Biff Davidson. Both men stressed that HarleyDavidson is changing the way it operates to be more customer responsive and building their bikes based more on what their customers want. In these tough economic times customer feedback is more important now than it has ever been. I met the new Regional Director, Leah Whaley. What an energetic person she is. I think she will do well. The single thing that I heard stressed the most during this training was that the main goal of H. O. G is to provide us with the opportunity to Ride and Have Fun. It will be my goal to make sure we all do just that. Respectfully submitted, Jan Ellis, Secretary UUUUUUUUUUU U U U U New Member Doug Clark Make Doug welcome and by joining our merry, fun loving group one of the greatest things he ever done, UUUUUUUUUUU U U .J\.... W U Safety Officer Report The first thing you should do before you even think about firing up your motorcycle is to check the air pressure in your front and back wheel. This is one of the most important motorcycle safety tips that you can do but most people forget or just choose not to do it. Check your owners manual for the proper tire inflation required for your motorcycle and inflate accordingly. Proper tire inflation cuts down on your vulnerability to a tire failure. Tire failures can lead to being stranded on the side of the road, or even worse the tire itself blowing out and sending you into an uncontrollable skid When doing a pre-ride inspection of your motorcycle tires be sure you check the rims carefully. Look for any cracks or blemishes in the rims, and if you run a spoked rim check each spoke and be sure that it is not loose. Loose spokes can cause an uneven rim therefore taking away some of the control you have on your motorcycle. Therefore it is important to be sure you take the extra minute or two to properly check your rims carefully. So many people overlook the values of properly inflated tires and non damaged rims. Not only will they keep you safer out there as you ride the highways and byways but properly inflated motorcycle tires will get you a lot better gas mileage. Experts have said that it can increase your miles per gallon by as much as 20 percent. So as you can see there are more than enough reasons to take an extra few seconds to check your tires and rims before you go out for a ride on your motorcycle. . Not only is proper tire inflation essential for safety it is also a way to save yourself 1 -O's of dollars each and every year. After some time of running on under inflated tires the tire gets what is called cupping.
