I am the first Commodore in nine years to have the pleasure of serving as both Commodore and acting Manager; I am very happy to relinquish the management aspects to a professional of such caliber like Darren Betz. Thank you to those who have assisted me during this transition. I have collected a list of improvements from thoughtful members and plan to address those suggestions in the near future. Our Club’s focus continues to be on providing exceptional value to each of our members. As I pointed out last month, Louis Ballantyne’s tennis program has helped develop over forty kids who have received college scholarships to universities all over the country. Chief Steve Crowder and Jabbo Gordon are developing a sailing program with as much potential to produce great collegiate sailors. These are just two examples of the value of FYC membership. Pool/Reciprocal Privileges with TCC: I hope you have visited our newly renovated pool. By all accounts, our new Snack Bar service and hybrid menu selections are a hit. One important addition that we made to our team this year was the position of a “Pool Relations Manager.” Debbie Apple is key to helping enhance your experience at our Club’s pool. Please help welcome her the next time you are enjoying our pool! We have enjoyed reciprocal privileges with our neighbors at Timuquana Country Club (TCC) for years. To remind everyone, both Clubs have agreed that as a member of FYC, you can visit TCC ONLY if you are escorted by a member there, and TCC members are welcome at FYC ONLY if accompanied by an FYC member. You cannot independently visit their club, nor they ours, without being the guest of a member who is present at the time. This policy is beneficial to both clubs as we want to maintain the distinctiveness we enjoy as separate organizations. Our summer programs are underway! I am confident that your kids will make some amazing lifetime memories here at FYC. All you have to do is sign them up. Flag Officers and Board of Governors New Associate Member Classification: Our new Associate membership classification is off to a great start. We continue to conduct focus groups and monthly receptions to boost membership in this area. Our goal is to attract the best and brightest to utilize their ideas to further our Club throughout the summer and beyond. Recent Projects Completed: I am pleased to report that more items on our bucket list are complete. Bob Steeg and our fantastic staff have spent numerous hours cleaning out the Grimes house, back dock, and boat storage areas. They identified and sorted hundreds of items. Finishing this project, along with the pool and other items already checked off, completes the “needs” identified in our 2011 membership survey. We continue to eliminate the visible wires on our facilities as well as the non-structural additions which may detract from the beautiful architecture of our historic clubhouse and grounds. Memorial Day brought us Tropical Storm Beryl and the challenging results associated with high winds and lots of rain. Before the storm, our staff led by Billy Mayo, did a fantastic job utilizing our existing hurricane preparation plan and the after storm clean up as well. He and the entire FYC staff are fantastic and their hard work and dedication make us all proud. Yvonne and I recently attended the New York Yacht Club’s opening of Harbor Court in Rhode Island. Meeting with other Commodores and their spouses from across the nation made us keenly aware of how highly regarded The Florida Yacht Club is by other organizations. We are a top tier Club and have a lot to be thankful for. That being said, we are striving each day to become even better. Please be sure to join us for the 4th of July as we celebrate, with family and friends, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the birth of this Great Nation and all the bountiful blessings that we are given each day in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Until then, Meilleurs voeux, nous vous verrons au Club! This group of individuals is just starting out in life and we wanted to make being an FYC member as affordable as we could for them. At the same time, the way we will propose, endorse and approve new members has not changed. “If It Is To Be, It’s Up To Me” is a book by Thomas B. Smith. And so it is with FYC membership. Your Membership Committee is working hard this year to not only expand the membership, but also to shape our committee into one that will actively support the membership development process. We are recruiting new members and ensuring a quality membership experience for all of our members. Welcome New Members! Ms. Abby Robinson Mr. Ryan Salem Mr. Manuel Granados Mr. Brian Osborne Mr. Nicholas Pendleton Welcome Back! Mr. Mark Brundick Spotlighting FYC Women Sailors: The Florida Yacht Club's Susan Grich and all female Crew aboard J24 “Quicksand” took First Place! The 2012 Jessie Ball Regatta was held on Saturday, June 2nd and was a part of the 2012 NFWSN Series (North FL. Women's Sailing Network). Susan Grich was the Skipper with Lisa Fewell, Jann Whidden, Merrill Varn, and Sharon Pentaleri as the Crew on J24 “Quicksand”. Please congratulate these women representing FYC Sailing! The Jessie Ball Regatta was a mixed class PHRF regatta, featuring a variety of sailboats with women at the helm from local clubs like The Florida Yacht Club, North Florida Cruising Club, Rudder Club, Navy Jax Yacht Club and Epping Forest Yacht Club. This event was hosted by Epping Forest Yacht Club. For information on our events, check out our page! www.facebook.com/ thefloridayachtclub and select “Like.” To do these things, and do them well, we need your support and involvement. After all, it is the responsibility of the current membership to recruit new members and give feedback on what the Club is doing right and what we could be doing better. If it is to be, it is up to me. - Thomas B. Smith With our new Associate membership class, we now have one more way for you as members to help us grow and sustain the great FYC culture. Cultivating all classifications of membership is important to the Club as an institution, and to us as members. We are only as good as the last experience our members and prospective members have here at the Club. As a committee, we are taking measures to ensure that our experiences are positive ones, but with your help, so much more is possible! If a Membership Committee or Board Member asks you if you can think of a prospective member, or ways to improve our current membership experience, remember “if it is to be, it is up to me”. With that said, there is no better time than now to propose a new member. Summer is here, the pool is alive, we have a skilled General Manager and staff as well as a lot of fun members! So, why not add a few more? Bailey Stephens in the FYC Front Office has all of the information you need. Contact her today! Thanks, Jeff Graf Membership Committee Fleet St. Augustine Fish-n-Cruise A friend of mine came up to me last weekend and told me that I had less gray hair than I did a month ago. We agreed that it was due to the arrival of Jabbo and Steve. These two certainly have had an enormous impact on our Fleet Department in the few weeks that they have been on our team. Thanks again for the great job you are doing for our Club. Summer Sailing Camp continues to provide an excellent program for our kids this summer. Be sure to sign up your kids, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors for this exciting one week program. Additional weeks are also available for double the fun. Call Steve Crowder at (904) 403-2480 for reservations and availability. Our FYC Kid’s Fishing Club continues to offer tons of fun on the last Sunday of every month. Bring your junior fishermen to the A-Dock at noon to join in on the fun. Our cruising calendar remains full of exciting events. New to our Club, is the Trailer Cruise to Cedar Key for Scallops. Stay tuned for details about this exciting new event. Our sailing programs will continue for the rest of the summer and we’ll also have our Wednesday night racing, featuring our fleet of J24’s. Give us a call if you would like a first-hand look or even a ride on a J Boat. We are also continuing to seek support of PHRF racing throughout the spring, summer and fall. Come out and join us on the lively waters of the St. Johns River. See you on the water, A. Lynn Ellis Fleet Captain Thank you... I would like to voice a sincere thank you to Charlie Berg, Ira Sonn, Winston White, and a few others for their support during Tropical Storm Beryl. Their efforts and assistance following the storm were above and beyond the call of duty. Steve Crowder Fleet Director Boat Storage Rates & Info Wet Slips are $7.50 per foot a month. Lifts are an additional $125.00 per month. Dry Lot Storage is $100.00 per month. Tennis My Point On May 24th we had another wonderful Junior Banquet with over 100 participants. Our parents, kids, and coaches that make up our FYC “Zone Team” were here celebrating another very successful after-school Junior Program! Many tournament titles were won throughout the year including team and individual titles at the local and state level. We also recognized our up-and-coming future stars, our 4-10 year olds and the stand outs of our Grand Prix Program. We honored all of our high school players (I’ve had 29 this year), our state ranked players (we had over 50), our graduating Seniors and of course our awesome parents! We can’t start off much better than with the Fourth of July Celebration. This year, our celebration falls on a Wednesday so it will be a fun “hump” day at the Club. We have a full spread for lunch and dinner including my Rum Spiked BBQ Baby Back Ribs before the fireworks display on the river. You’ll enjoy games, waterslide, bounce house, good eats and fireworks. There will be no reason to even leave the Club that day. On the 6th, I’ll put together the famous Shrimp and Beer Festival in the Pirate’s Den. Later in the month, we are having “An Evening in Asia” in the Pirate’s Den as well. I will feature cuisine from all over the continent and Chef JoJo will be preparing his world-class Sushi. If you are intimidated by sushi or raw food, have no worries. We have the freshest seafood and there will be cooked varieties offered as well. This seafood is so fresh that it could have swam into the kitchen! Cooking Class Thursday, July 26th | 6:30 pm Formal Dining Room Since I grew up in Ohio, the summer season was the time that we lived off of the land. We had beautiful zucchinis, asparagus, green beans, and many other vegetables. One crop that reaches its peak season in July is corn! We grew Silver Queen Corn which in my opinion is the best sweet corn available. Florida offers some great sweet corn too so we should do a class on that. There are so many things that you can do with corn and I will show you a few new ideas. Come out to shuck some corn on the 26th! All Day & Every Day | $3 Tangerine Margarita Tuesday White Cosmopolitan Wednesday Tequila Sunrise Thursday Firefly Sweet Tea Friday Sangria Saturday SeabreezeSunday Wendy West Bar Manager Cuisine What are the Best Apéritifs? The French word “Apéritif ” translates to having a drink before a meal. Some say that the purpose of the Apéritif is to cleanse the palate and perk up the appetite. The more traditional concept is that it is intended to slightly curb the appetite so that you can relax, take your time with the meal, and get the greatest enjoyment from the food. For this reason, a good Apéritif tends to be a little bit sweet. An excellent, and very popular, Apéritif in France is the “Kir” (pronounced keer), which originated in the Burgundian city of Dijon. This slightly sweet cocktail is made with a base of dry white wine to which a tablespoon (or to taste) of crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) is added, along with a twist of lemon peel. The traditional wine to use is Bourgogne Aligoté, but any dry white will do, the sharper and flintier the better. My personal favorite is the “Kir Royale”, traditionally made with a base of Champagne (but a good, very dry, sparkling white wine will do) to which a tablespoon of liqueur de framboise (raspberry liqueur) and a small slice of orange, slightly squeezed, is added. A nice, warm-weather quaff is “Sangria“ (Spain), made by macerating cut-up fruit (oranges, lemons, limes and apples) in red or white wine. Flavor it to taste (for suggested quantities contact me) with orange and lemon juice, brandy and Cointreau (sugar optional). Allow to stand overnight if possible. To serve, add club soda or sparkling water, pour over ice and garnish with pieces of fruit and a dash of allspice. Another possibility is a “Wine Spritzer”, a combination of twothirds white wine, one-third club soda or sparkling water. Serve in a highball glass (ice optional) with a wedge of lemon or lime. The Wine Club meets for a tasting class on the third Tuesday of each month. Make a reservation to try it out by calling the FYC Front Office at (904) 387-1653. An article regarding the benefits of massage was recently published in The New York Times. In The Wall Street Journal, another article reports that there is a surge of interest within the alternative medicine community in regards to studying the benefits of massage. A 2009 study found that a full body massage lowers your heart rate, boosts the immune function, and lowers blood pressure in women with breast cancer undergoing radiation treatment. A 2011 study showed that children given a 20 minute massage by their parents every night for 5 weeks (plus standard asthma treatment) had significantly improved lung function. It is a wonderful article and I encourage you to pick up a copy in the Fitness Center and read about the benefits for yourself. I further encourage you to pick up the phone and set up a massage appointment. Everyone has their own reasons for receiving a massage: from relieving stress to sore muscles or it’s just simply a part of their wellness regiment. Come and experience the benefits for yourself! Karolyn Cantin, L.M.T To Good Health, (904) 228-8127 Facials Tips for Healthy Skin 1. Protect your skin daily by using a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and with UVA/UVB. 2. Hydrate by drinking plenty of water daily with at least 8 to 10 glasses of water. Your skin will look plumper and firmer when hydrated. 3. Extra oxygen is what our skin and body needs. Perform aerobic exercise weekly for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week. Not only does extra oxygen keep your skin looking better but your body will be toned and in shape as well. 4.
