Growing up in Kingston, NY, Joe was the fourth of six children
(3 boys, 3 girls) born to Vincent and Marguerite D’Aprile. At 12 years
old, Joe started working in the neighborhood mowing lawns, raking
and shoveling snow (yes, before the snow blowers!). Eventually, he
accumulated enough money to buy some used riding mowers. Summers
were spent mowing on sunny days and repairing equipment on rainy
days! Joe always liked cars, and enjoyed spending a Saturday down at
his Uncles Ray’s Sunoco station in Beacon, NY. Always curious as to how they worked,
it wasn’t too long until Joe was repairing and even driving the family car in the driveway!
(Joe would further develop these skills later, eventually buying older used cars over the
years to fix up, drive for a while and sell.) He continued mowing lawns until his senior
year, when he started working in a pharmacy, helping out in the store, and delivering
prescriptions and hospital beds.
After graduating Kingston High School, Joe started college as a Biology major
before switching paths and ending up with an AAS in Business from Ulster Community
College. (Joe had initially aspired to be a commercial pilot, and did start flying at age 25
towards that goal, but it never took off.)
It was a college professor who first led Joe to HeritagEnergy. Joe held a variety of
management positions in credit, delivery, terminal, branch, and service over his nearly
10-year career at HeritagEnergy. There, working under great industry and civic leaders
in our area, Abel Garraghan, Bill Davenport, and Dick Davenport, Joe learned about
the oil industry through the scope of men of vision, character, and strength. Those were
formative years, and ones for which he has always been grateful.
Joe married his wife Deb in 1996. After returning from their honeymoon in France,
they purchased their home in Woodstock. The stork stopped by on three different
occasions, delivering their sons Marcel and Adrien, and daughter Cambria.
After selling heating equipment for 4 years at Agway Energy Products, Joe moved
on to ThermoPride, where he enjoyed managing a large territory and meeting additional
oil, propane and HVAC dealers across the state. He became more active in the industry
and joined the OHIENY and HVOHC councils, where many friendships blossomed.
Joe was elected as a member of the Board of Directors for the Hudson Valley Oil
Heat Council (now known as the Hudson Valley Oil & Energy Council) and has
continued to serve the board for many years. He was elected President of the HVOEC
in 2007 and served for two years until 2009. With the board, Joe elected to move
the monies raised at the golf outing back under the council’s control. As a result, the
scholarship committee was established, which he still currently chairs. Joe’s leadership
was particularly effective as our industry navigated through one of the worst price spikes
since the oil embargo of the 1970s. During his tenure, crude oil rose in price to $147
per barrel and dramatically crashed to $32 per barrel by the time his presidency wrapped
up. Joe was the somber voice of reason as we all did our best to navigate the choppy
waters of panicked customers and the perception that the industry was on the brink
of destruction! We survived to live another day, and we all learned that the heating
industry is good at keeping folks on their toes.
Joe is well known around the council as the official “Devil’s Advocate.” He’s the
reasonable voice of opposition, the guy who says, “Hold on, let’s think this thing
through!” He’s probably the reason the council hasn’t blown its budget on cockamamie
ideas over the years! Joe continues to serve the council well, and his contributions
reverberate to this day.
After 17 years with ThermoPride, Joe felt due for a change, but didn’t want to leave
the industry or the area. A perfect opportunity presented itself with Sweeney Rogers
Geraghty. At SRGI, Joe has found new opportunities and an atmosphere to grow further
within the industry.
Deb had introduced Joe to Cape Cod on one of their first dates, which turned out to
be a foreshadowing. Joe and Deb ended up buying a small property on the Cape nearly
10 years ago, and they enjoy “an escape to the Cape” with the whole family when they
can (including the dog, too!).
As the kids were growing up, Joe wanted them to appreciate his love of fixing up
old cars. Fate soon found him a needy ‘66 Ford Galaxie convertible which he bought
in a snow storm in Saratoga, NY. Nicknamed “Pluto,” the Galaxie spends a lot of time
cruising the Cape. Pluto would soon be joined in the garage by a ‘66 Buick LeSabre
Convertible Joe found forgotten and non-running under a tree, and rescued from a
certain demise.
Joe likes to go watch his boys’ track and cross country events at school, and Cambria’s
drama club performances. Joe’s love of food is shared by the whole family. Deb, Joe and
the kids enjoy cooking and trying various new foods!

LOCAL CHARITY PROFILE
The West Hurley Public Library has been serving the patrons of
West Hurley since 1956. The current building on Clover St. was
built in 1975 and renovated in 2006. The library averages over
twenty thousand visits per year and checks out the same amount of
materials each year. This lending service has been improved to the
point where a patron can frequently order materials from any of 66
public libraries online and pick them up at the library within 48
hours. The library also participates in online services, which offer
downloadable eBooks, eAudios, movies, reference magazines, language
learning, and interactive picture books. Their meeting room is kept
busy with a steady stream of enrichment classes, skill workshops,
book discussions, tutoring, and literacy advancement opportunities.
