Mass is the greatest prayer of the Church.

40 Days of Francis: Pope Francis Has Arrived!
Pope Francis quote of the week: “Poverty calls us to sow hope. . . . Poverty is the flesh of the poor Jesus, in that child
who is hungry, in the one who is sick, in those unjust social structures.”
Knot of the week: 19% of children living in the Diocese of Camden live below the federal poverty line. 12% of the
Diocese’s total population lives in poverty.
The Pope has arrived in Philadelphia! We joyfully welcome the Holy Father and his message of love and service to the
poor to our neighboring city. Let us continue to sow hope throughout the Diocese of Camden as we respond to the cry
of the poor.
FROM THE COVER: A WORD ABOUT THE ARTIST—
OUR VERY OWN PARISHIONER!
Cherry Hill High School Senior, Sarah Whitty is making a name for herself with her
drawing of Pope Francis. Originally created for the Catholic Church of St. Mary, the drawing
has been chosen by the Diocese of Camden for use on its web site and social media leading up
to the Pope’s Philadelphia visit on September 26th. Sarah’s work also attracted the attention of
the Cherry Hill Sun.
“I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember,” Sarah says. Formal lessons started
when she was about six years old, and she has enjoyed art all through her years in the Cherry
Hill Public Schools.
Sarah’s mother, Rita Whitty, gave her the original assignment to create artwork to help
promote the Pope’s upcoming visit via the web site of her home Parish, St. Mary. Mrs. Whitty
is the webmaster for our Parish. Sarah chose to us charcoal to create her drawing. She put a
great deal of thought into the process.
“While Pope Francis is very humble, he also has a big presence,” she explains. “He’s
very open and kind towards everyone he’s come across, and he seems always willing to offer guidance and words of wisdom
to anyone who needs it. That’s what I was hoping to communicate in the drawing. I feel as though he does his best to be
connected with the people of the world.”
Sarah intends to continue her art beyond high school. “I’m hoping to study animation or illustration in college,” she
says. “I’d love to be an animator—it’s an amazing form of art.”
The Pectoral Cross of Pope Francis
What fascinates so many people about Pope Francis is his humility and simplicity. Unlike
many of his predecessors, Pope Francis chooses to wear a simple white cassock and pectoral cross
when he’s seen in public. Pectoral crosses are typically made of gold and many early crosses
were adorned with jewels and precious stones. In striking contrast to previous pectoral crosses,
Pope Francis’ cross is made of silver, and there are no stones or jewels. (1)
“The beauty of the cross is the meaning and simplicity it depicts: Christ the Good Shepherd
leading the flock and carries the lost sheep on his shoulders. On the top of the cross is depicted the
Holy Spirit. The cross is beautiful highly detailed silver oxidized die cast and is made in Italy.”
says that maker of this cross. The small artisan master craftsmen, named Giuseppe Albrizzi of
Pavia, Italy, who originally crafted the pectoral cross for then-Archbishop Bergoglio. (2)
The elements of the design of Pope Francis’s special pectoral cross seem to reflect well his
pastoral emphasis to be the Bishop of Rome, its Shepherd, who reaches out ceaselessly to the lost sheep of the people of God
and far beyond the limits of the Church of God. He is seen by many as a true “good shepherd” to all who are in need of
God’s mercy and love.
Also his efforts in listening to the Holy Spirit are expressed well in the upper part of his cross design. His welcoming input
from the Spirit present in the laity as well as the clergy for the forthcoming “Synod on the Family” is a singular sign of his
belief that the Holy Spirit is still actively guiding the Church of God. (2)
