Heritage Hill State Historical Park · 2640 S Webster Ave · Green Bay, WI 54301 · 920.448.5150 · www.heritagehillgb.org 1 by Nick Backhaus, Restoration/Maintenance Manager - [email protected] by Emily Turriff, Curator - [email protected] Tank Cottage is not only one of Heritage Hill’s oldest and most unique buildings, and is one of the oldest buildings in the state of Wisconsin! Tank (pronounced “Tonk” as in “Conk”) Cottage gets its name from Caroline and Otto Tank who bought the cottage when they moved to Green Bay in 1850, but the cottage was already 50 years old when the Tanks purchased it! Oftentimes we forget the earlier portion of the cottage’s history, so let’s take a look at the cottage’s early days. Wooden cross sections were taken from the floor joists of the cottage in the early 1990s and studied using dendrochronology. Dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating, is a scientific method of dating based on the analysis and study of growth rings in trees. The samples from Tank Cottage were compared to a white oak (of known age) from the Village of Howard. After studying the pattern of the growth rings from both samples, researchers determined that the lumber for the floor joists of the cottage was cut down in 1803. Historians had been using a date of 1776 for the construction of the cottage based on an affidavit signed by Jacques Porlier. The document stated that Joseph Roi had lived on the land since 1776 and that it had only been occupied by him until he sold it to Jacques Porlier in 1805. There is no mention that Roi had any buildings on his property when he sold it Porlier. A 200+ year old house is definitely an ongoing preservation challenge. Tank Cottage was moved to Heritage Hill in 1975. In 1989 it was reshingled as part of a more extensive restoration. At that time it was disassembled and then reassembled to also address some structural issues and powder post beetles. This August Tank cottage received a new cedar shingle roof. Twenty five years is about the average life for a cedar roof. The wood “shingles” are made from machine sawn cedar. Cedar “shakes” are the hand hewn version which visitors can see at some of Heritage Hill’s 2015 seasonal events such as Springtime at Heritage Hill. The main roof, porch and summer kitchen have a weather exposure of 5’’ (the portion of the shingle that is seen) while the roofs on the wings have an exposure of 4’’ due to their lower slopes. This ensures no leaks from slower water runoff. The next preservation phase will be exterior painting of the cottage in the summer of 2015. by Barbara Miller, Heritage Hill Foundation Executive Director - [email protected] Tank Cottage has also been called the Roi-Porlier-Tank Cottage. This name reflects the different owners of the cottage and makes note of the other people who spent a portion of their lives in the cottage. When Jacques Porlier lived in the cottage it was just a simple fur trading cabin (pièce sur pièce style) with one room and a small attic. Porlier was an important figure in Green Bay history. He was the area’s first school master, was Captain of the Militia and Justice of the Peace for the British, as well as the Chief Justice of the Brown County Court. He lived in the cottage with his family until his death in 1839. The cottage was then conveyed to John Jacob Astor. Caroline Tank was an avid lover of art as evidenced by the extensive collection that covers the walls of Tank Cottage. Thanks to a grant from the Green Bay and De Pere Antiquarian Society, two pieces of Tank artwork are in the process of being restored. The Musical Family is an oil painting in need of extensive work. Most noticeably, in some areas the canvass is missing and it is cracked and torn in a couple places. The piece is signed, “H der Muelen,” and was believed to be painted by Caroline Tank’s sister, Clara Henrietta Van der Meulen in 1829. It is owned by Heritage Hill Corporation. Astor eventually sold the cottage to Otto and Caroline Tank in 1850. The Tanks completely remodeled the cottage, adding two separate wings on either side of the cottage and adding walls to create bedrooms and offices. The Tanks furnished the house with their family treasures. Otto and Caroline lived in the cottage until their deaths in 1864 and 1891 respectively. Since the early 1900s the cottage functioned as a historic house museum and has been moved twice to preserve its wonderful history. A second piece, the portrait of Caroline Tank’s grandfather, General Baron Carel Von Boetzelaer was on display in Tank Cottage in the parlor. Over time, small spots have surfaced, possibly mold or acid from the cardboard backing. The pastel portrait was originally owned by Caroline Tank and is on loan from the Brown County Historical Society. According to Helen H. Metzelaar, the portraits of General Baron Carel von Boetzelaer was done by pastelist Izaäk Schmidt. (From Private to Public Spheres: Exploring Women’s Role in Dutch Music Life from c. 1700 to c. 1880 and Three Case Studies. Utrecht: Koninklijke Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis, 1999.) We look forward to having these fully restored and back on public display. Proceeds from the Antiquarian Antique Show (p 6) support this preservation work in our community. Heritage Hill State Historical Park · 2640 S Webster Ave · Green Bay, WI 54301 · 920.448.5150 · www.heritagehillgb.org 2 Dear friends and supporters of Heritage Hill State Historical Park, My name is Steve Sengstock and I’m pleased to introduce myself to you as the new Executive Officer of Heritage Hill State Historical Park. I’m delighted that the Corporation board asked me to join their team and am looking forward to attracting more visitors to the park annually and improving the Park’s profitability in the process. In my past professional experiences at WFRV TV 5, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and most recently as the Executive Director of the economic development corporation of Shawano County, I developed and honed the skill sets the Corporation board was seeking in their new Executive Officer. I’m organized, possess strong strategic planning and marketing skills and understand the non-profit world well. My top priorities getting started will be to fine tune the 2015-2017 Strategic Plan for the park’s on-going growth and to develop the 2015 annual budget. It’s my vision to secure the long-term financial footing of the park and to, over time, reduce our reliance on Foundation funds for overhead expenses. Although there will always be a need for the Foundation’s financial support, (and we do serve the same mission), it will be a priority to have those utilized for capital improvement projects instead. Attracting more funds via sponsorships and appropriate grant sources are just two of the strategies I’ll employ to help achieve this goal. Growing annual attendance will also be a high priority. Today, the Park is visited by slightly more than 50,000 guests annually. A marketing plan is being developed that will help achieve the Park’s goals. Motivating existing visitors to return to the Park more frequently during the year and bringing new guests with them, (a “grow from within” strategy), will focus on growing our core visitor base. The plan will also develop and bring to market strategies to attract new visitors to the Park for the first time, (a “grow from the outside” strategy). The overall purpose of our marketing efforts will be to promote what the Park has to offer and to attract a greater number of people through a calendar of compelling events that truly engage visitors and related strategies that will enhance the overall visitor experience. Finally, I will seek to work very closely with both the Corporate and Foundation boards to improve information-sharing and communication between the two groups. We have the opportunity to truly take the Park to a new level and it can happen if we make a genuine effort to work together in a collaborative and mutually beneficial professional manner. In closing, I intend to meet personally with each Corporate and Foundation board member to get better acquainted. It’s been my past experience that this manner of outreach is a very effective method to get off to a fast start. I look forward to having those conversations over the next few weeks. Thank you all for your support and for the opportunity to lead such a worthwhile and important area amenity. I look forward to tackling the challenges ahead and for the opportunity to work together to effectively serve the mission of the Park. Sincerely, Steve Sengstock Executive Officer by Barbara Miller, Heritage Hill Foundation Executive Director - [email protected] Every year at Heritage Hill seems more exciting than the last. Many of you shared that excitement with us over the past 39 years as we celebrated buildings moving down the river to establish the Park, conducted massive Country Fairs and Civil War Reenactments, reassembled the Moravian Church on site, completed preservation of the Cotton House, hosted the Clydesdales and the UW Madison Marching Band and were regaled at Music on the Green Concerts . . . the list could go on and on. Since December of 2009 you followed us from the arrival of the Fort Howard Guard House in the early morning hours through the construction over the past two years and as we look forward to a grand opening next summer. None of this happens without your commitment to preserve local history so that we can share the lessons that history longs to tell. Your generous support of scholarships for children, acquisition and preservation of buildings, and interpretation of those buildings and their former residents has made Heritage Hill State Historical Park a jewel for our community and the Wisconsin State Park system as a whole. We can’t thank you enough, and we can’t do it without you! Whether you are a long standing supporter or have just joined us, your financial support is crucial to providing high quality and engaging historical experiences. THANK YOU for sustaining us. Please consider sharing your appreciation for Heritage Hill with our November annual appeal mailing. We need you to help us keep history alive fresh and relevant. Become part of the living legacy that is Heritage Hill. Sources of Park Revenue Heritage Hill State Historical Park · 2640 S Webster Ave · Green Bay, WI 54301 · 920.448.5150 · www.heritagehillgb.org 3 The Fort Howard Guard House has been whitewashed top to bottom and exterior work including landscaping is completed. The exterior exhibits an impressive stone foundation and decorative archway over the connecting porch. Work is now focused on the ADA ramp and interior finishing as we enter the home stretch. The ADA ramp will eventually feature interpretive information about the Guard House complex and the Fort along its path. After careful examination of the structure under the Guard House it was determined that the cells ran parallel, resulting in long narrow chambers for prisoners with very little light. This is in contrast to the upstairs “Light Prison” which occupies almost half of the Guard House building and receives much more light. Ongoing research determined the stockade was comprised of massive ten inch by ten inch hand hewn logs rather than a planked fence style wall. Work on the massive stockade will begin this fall with completion in the spring. Interior finishing and interpretive furnishings will take shape over the winter and spring as we look toward a summer 2015 opening. We would like to introduce you to the Vollrath-Keating Family, Lula, Olesya, Ed, Ruth and Bahdmah. You may have seen them in the Park over the years as they began volunteering in 2002. You may be thinking what is it that families with young children could contribute to the Hill? Well, an enthusiastic welcome and a “I’m so glad you are visiting Heritage Hill today” smile. That is how the family began volunteering at the Hill as wedding greeters. Over the years the family has volunteered in various areas of the Park from greeting, to gardening, to playing games on the Green, to selling concessions and playing music for dancing. One summer, they were the Belgian Farm family doing laundry and grating soap flakes. Your newsletter comes courtesy of their folding and labeling skills as they regularly volunteer at the Foundation. Heritage Hill has been a terrific fit for this homeschooling family. Learning local history, giving back to the community, gaining volunteer skills while all the time having fun contributed to their children’s educational experience. Heritage Hill has proved to be a great place to grow their children into more responsible volunteer positions. Lula and Olesya’s volunteering experience has blossomed into a love for interpreting and they could be seen in a variety of areas in the park this summer as staff interpreters. We appreciate all this family does to help make Heritage Hill a welcome place to be. Students attending these 2 ½ hour immersion programs, designed to meet state curriculum standards, may portage canoes, cook over an open hearth, grind corn or possibly make a spark using flint and steel. Any one of these hands-on, activity-oriented field trips is an excellent way to start the school year. The Hill also offers multiple Outreach and Learning Lab programs to groups. Dressed in period clothing, interpreters bring artifacts and hands-on items to schools and other venues during the five outreach programs which are designed for multiple age groups, starting as young as kindergarten. The two Learning Labs programs take place in our modern yet rustic classrooms in our education center in the winter when the weather makes an outdoor field trip difficult. A Soldier’s Story Wednesday, November 19 10:00 - 11:30 am (ages 9 & up) Explore items from a soldier’s knapsack and hear about the experiences of a Civil War soldier. Weather permitting, students will attend “school of the soldier” on our parade grounds to learn marching and drilling. Trees, buildings, and people burst into flames. Metal melted. Sand turned into glass. People thought the end of the world had come. When the “tornado of fire” was over, 2,500 people were dead, and Peshtigo was nothing but a smoking ruin. It was the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history. Whenever we have had a need, you step up and help. The summer season may be over, but we still need help to get us through the end of the year. September, October and November we are busy with Discovery Days for the schools. We need people to help greet the busses as the schools arrive, and in the gift shop when they get to spend their money on items that will create memories of their visit here. Also in October, we have our Halloween event. This is a great family event that everyone enjoys. We need help everywhere for this. You can dress in costume if you like, but it is not required. So if you haven’t heard from us yet, save October 18th and 25th, that is on Saturdays, to help us out. In December, we have Heritage Hill’s Spirit of Christmas Past. This is another event where we need a lot of people to make the event a success. Those dates are December 13th and 20th, also a Saturday. Those are just our special events.
