A Message
From Our
Executive Director
From the desk of Julie Fenske
First off, I’d like to thank everyone for their understanding
and patience as it starts to get a bit busier with our various
in-house projects and outside construction. The new keyless entry installation is going very smoothly and those residents who have been completed seemed to be pleased with
the easier access. This project is expected to be completed
at the end of November.
We also have a number of important events going on in November that I’d encourage you to attend! On the 4th, we will
have an official ground breaking ceremony for the expansion. Board members and local officials will join us for a
few brief comments starting at 10:00am followed by a reception with light refreshments. On the 17th, we are excited
to be hosting actress, Jane Seymour for another Red Carpet
Series. As usual, the sessions are at 11:00am and 2:00pm
with a book signing following each. The Windsor Dining
Room will be closed so that we can accommodate the
speaker schedule. Please be sure to RSVP for both events to
Suzanne in Marketing.
I’d like to thank everyone for their support so far of our annual Alzheimer’s Walk events. As a team, we have already
collected donations totaling $11,000. The event at the
Liesner Farm raised over $3000 on its own. We want to
thank Inge and Willy for hosting everyone and for their never ending generosity and hard work. Anyone who is joining
us for the walk on November 7st, please sign up on the registration sheet posted on the bulletin board. The bus will
leave promptly at 8:00am. If anyone is driving separately,
please stop by Marketing or Administration for directions to
Minute Maid Park and details about where to park.
Please watch the in-house channel for details on a special
Pastries and Pumpers party. For all of our residents that
have enjoyed watching the activity on the new site, we will
host a special viewing event when the flooring of the new
parking garages gets underway. Details about place and
time will follow once we get closer to the projected date.
Right now, they are looking at the week of November 15th,
weather permitting.
In closing, I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. We are truly blessed to work here at The Buckingham and are thankful to have each of you in our lives!
Julie

5 Signs of Memory Loss That Could Be Serious

Your memory problems frighten you.
You have changed how you work or play.
Your family expresses concern.
Friends and family start to cover for you.
You find it hard to make choices.
History of Alzheimer’s Disease
1906: Dr. Alois Alzheimer first describes "a peculiar disease"
German physician Alois Alzheimer, a pioneer in linking symptoms to microscopic brain
changes, describes the haunting case of Auguste D., a patient who had profound memory
loss, unfounded suspicions about her family, and other worsening psychological changes. In
her brain at autopsy, he saw dramatic shrinkage and abnormal deposits in and around nerve
cells.
Dr. Alzheimer died in 1915, never suspecting that his encounter with Auguste D. would one
day touch the lives of millions and ignite a massive international research effort. Scientists recognize Dr. Alzheimer not only for his groundbreaking characterization of a major disease but also as a role model. He set a
new standard for understanding neurodegenerative disorders by establishing a close clinical relationship with
his patients and using new scientific tools to determine how symptoms related to physical brain changes.

Employee Appreciation Fund
Employee Appreciation Fund: By now you have
received your Council letter launching the Employee Appreciation Fund 2015 project and have
begun to think about to what extent you will participate. Since The Buckingham policies prohibit
personal gratuities between employees and residents, this is your one opportunity during the
year to show appreciation for the many ways in
which our 250 employees provide excellent and
caring services for us on a daily basis in the various jobs to which they are assigned and then often go the extra mile in large and small ways to
show just how much they care.
If you have checked the stairway displayed in
the lobby and the rotunda area, you have seen
that we are on the way up the stairs to the target with 20% of the residents having dropped
that green envelope in the box outside the Business Office on the Theatre hallway. The months
seem to fly by, so Thanksgiving week will be here
soon. It is our hope that the 80% remaining will
thoughtfully determine a generous amount and
write that check SOON. Please help up to move
those feet up to the 100% target at the top of
the stairs!
Election News: Nomination forms will be in the
IN-HOUSE resident boxes for Floor Representatives for Building 1, Floors 2 and 4; Building 2,

the duties listed in the Resident Council By-laws
