FOOD FOR THE POOR, INC. Saving Lives…Transforming Communities…Renewing Hope www.FoodForThePoor.org FINAL REPORT ST. MARY’S FISHING VILLAGE Latorre, Pointe a Raquette-La Gonave, Haiti “As often as you did it to one of the least of My brothers and sisters, you did it to Me.” Matthew 25:40 ST. MARY’S FISHING VILLAGE Latorre, Pointe a Raquette-La Gonave, Haiti FINAL REPORT The Solution Fishing has the potential to provide steady income throughout the coastal towns of Haiti. However, fishermen in Latorre lack the necessary tools and training to effectively capitalize on this economic enterprise. Food For The Poor’s development team has carefully analyzed the many needs of Latorre. Based on their findings, they have created a Food For The Poor Fishing Village Project to aid the area’s desperately poor families. GOAL: TO ESTABLISH A FISHING VILLAGE IN LATORRE THAT WILL PROVIDE FOUR COOPERATIVES OF FISHERMEN WITH A BOAT (INCLUDING A 15HP ENGINE), AND FISHING ACCESSORIES THAT WILL HELP THEM INCREASE THEIR CATCHES. The project will also cover the cost of a gear shed and sanitation unit (toilet and shower area). The fishermen will also have access to potable water through a well or cistern (depending on area). A solar panel system will also be installed to provide the village with electricity. A selection process, preceded by an investigation, will take place in Haiti to decide on serious, honest individuals who will participate in the project. Sixteen unemployed men will be selected to form four teams. Each team, consisting of four fishermen (captain included), will share a fiberglass fishing boat, (18 to 22.5 feet in length). The fishermen will be trained in deep-sea fishing techniques, the best practices on how and where to effectively sell their catch, and procedures to minimize abuse of sea resources while protecting the environment. Each of the four teams will also receive a 15HP engine, a hand-held radio, a 150-quart cooler, safety gear, fishing tackle, a FAD (Fish Attracting Device) and other accessories. They will share access to a gear shed that will house a large freezer and all of the fishing equipment. With the proper vessel, a high-powered engine, superior fishing equipment, and adequate storage facilities (freezer and coolers to preserve the fish), these men will be able to go deep-sea fishing and return with large, profitable catches. The teams will be expected to reinvest a portion of their catch to a community organization/church in order to help the elderly and sick in their area. They are also required to regularly set aside a small amount of their proceeds for engine repair and maintenance. 1140HUF 1 ST. MARY’S FISHING VILLAGE Latorre, Pointe a Raquette-La Gonave, Haiti Progress Update It is wonderful to report that the fishing village has been successfully established. The last component, the sanitation block, has been constructed. It is a concrete structure that has piping connections to properly dispose of waste. The fishermen do not have to use the bushes as their restroom anymore. They now have a sense of privacy and convenience. The fishing village is now in complete operation and consists of a gear shed, where the fishermen store their fishing equipment and accessories. It has a solar panel system with a street light that helps guide the fishermen home at night. The solar panel system also powers the freezer inside the gear shed, where the fishermen can store their catches. The fishermen also have a water cistern that gives them immediate access to water, and they have a sanitation block that was just completed. These components have provided a more productive environment for the fishermen. Their boats with the engines have given them access to the deep blue sea, whereas before they could not go too far out into the sea without putting themselves at risk. This is no more. The fishermen are catching large amounts of fish and they are selling them to generate income to support their families. There is truly a change that has taken place in St. Mary’s Fishing Village. Despair that once filled the hearts of the people has now turned into hope that is beaming in the community. Thank you! Future Action No further action is needed, as this project has been completed.
