Powertrain PV Solar –
1.78 MW – Toledo, Ohio
The roof of GM's Toledo Transmission plant is covered in 20,153
First Solar panels for a combined
capacity of 1.78 MW. The array
produces about 2,056,955 kWh
annually, enough to provide 3% of
the plant electricity usage.
The system was developed by
Solscient Energy and installed by
Romanoff Electric in early 2012.
Solscient Energy owns, operates,
and maintains the array, selling the
power generated to GM via a 20
year PPA. The project was financed by bonds obtained by the
Toledo Port Authority.

GM has set a goal of reaching 60
MW of solar installed at facilities
worldwide, by 2015. By the end of
2013, GM had installed more than
40 MW of solar capacity at its facilities. In that same year, SEIA
(Solar Energy Industries Association) awarded GM a “Solar Champion;” an award that recognizes
companies that significantly impact
the establishment of a strong solar
industry in America.
Several of GM's facilities also employ solar canopies with EV charging stations that employees and
visitors can use. Additionally, GM
has hundreds of charging stations
in workplaces, and provided over
4,000 charging stations to dealers
across the nation.

PART 1: OHIO'S BIG SOLAR
#16 –Springfield Solar (Assurant Specialty Property) – 1.77 MW – Springfield, Ohio
In late 2012, Assurant Specialty Property began receiving clean energy from a 1.77 MW solar array at its
Springfield campus. The array is expected to produce around 2,335,233 kWh a year for use by the 1,900
employees at the location.
Tangent Energy Solutions operates the array, it is owned by LCP Solar Development I, LP, and managed by
Laurel Capital Partners. The installation cost $7 million. The owner of the system will sell the generated solar
energy to Assurant over the next 20 years.
The 6,200 panels were installed on rooftops and 15 parking canopies by Third Sun Solar of Athens, Ohio.
The carports are visible from I-70 as motorists pass through Springfield.
In May of 2012, Assurant began offering the nation’s first specialized insurance and warranty management
program for commercial scale solar systems.
