GUIDE
Autumn is well and truly upon us,
and for me that tends to mean the
culmination of a year’s worth of work
putting together Celluloid Screams,
our annual celebration of all things
horror. 2014 has been a terrific year
for genre cinema, giving us a wealth
of films to choose from and our
programme this year is one of our
strongest ever. From our opening
gala premiere of CS favourites
Astron-6’s The Editor through to the
closing night mayhem of zombie
sequel Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead,
there’s something for everyone
(check out www.celluloidscreams.
co.uk for details) – With the obvious
plugging out of the way, there’s
plenty to enjoy at the Showroom if
the darker side of cinema isn’t your
thing.
On general release and a world
apart from horror we have Mr Turner,
Mike Leigh’s biopic covering the
last quarter century in the life of
the famed British painter J.M.W.
Turner, ’71, a tense thriller set in
1970s Belfast from Warp Films and
Gone Girl, the latest from director
David Fincher and based on the
international best-selling novel
by Gillian Flynn. Elsewhere in the
programme there is Nuri Bilge
Ceylan’s Winter Sleep, winner of
the 2014 Palme D’Or at this year’s
Cannes Film Festival as well as
the concluding chapter of Peter
Jackson’s Middle Earth saga in
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five
Armies so the spectrum of world
cinema across continents and
genres is well-covered.
As well as being a rabid horror
enthusiast, I always make time to
seek out the latest science fiction
cinema (and in fact, the two genres
often intersect) and so the BFI’s
Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder
season is a particular highlight
for me. Arriving in October and
running until December, the season
includes screenings of a world
of science fiction fare including
David Cronenberg’s dystopian
media nightmare Videodrome
and a special outdoor headphone

ABOUT OUR NEW RELEASES
PROGRAMME
‘71 (15)
The cinema programme is scheduled
on a weekly basis. We’ll tell you as
much as possible about the films
we’ll screen in the coming months
in this quarterly Guide, but the UK
film release schedule is subject to
change and more films will be added
to our programme. We can’t confirm
precise dates and times for the films
at the point at which we go to print,
but there are plenty of ways to check
our screening schedule…
A young British soldier is accidentally
abandoned by his unit following a
terrifying riot on the streets of Belfast
in 1971. Unable to tell friend from
foe, the raw recruit must survive the
night alone and find his way to safety

deadly landscape.

CIRCUS OF HORRORS (15)
SAT 25 OCT 16.00
Dir. Sidney Hayers / 1940 / UK / 88mins
Billed as “The Exploitation Picture

weren’t warned about this brilliantly
lurid and horrifying film. Taking over a
circus and populating it with women
he has ‘fixed’ proves a success
until the performers try to leave and
the good Dr. Shuller shows his true

case both.

In the world of carnivals, the
‘Mentalist’ was always a two person

communicate predictions and dupe
an audience desperate to speak to
their lost loved ones or learn what
fate has in store for them. In this
brilliantly noir film, Stan Carlisle

EXCLUSIVE SATELLITE EVENT
THURSDAY OCTOBER 23RD 7PM
Dir. Feng Xiaogang / 2006 / 2hrs 11mins
Russell Brand, one of our most
controversial public figures, talks to
the Guardian’s Owen Jones about
why he thinks revolution isn’t just
possible, but inevitable. In his new
book, the writer and comedian
argues that the system isn’t working,
that our governments are corrupt
and the opposing parties are all
pointlessly similar. Is there another
way or is this just ‘the way
things are’?
A unique insight into one of history’s
most dramatic events: the 198485 British Miners’ Strike. Using
interviews and a wealth of rare and
never before seen archive footage,
Still The Enemy Within tells the story
of a group of miners and supporters
who were on the frontline of Britain’s
longest strike for an entire year.
These were people that Margaret
Thatcher labelled ‘the Enemy
Within’. A universal tale of ordinary
people standing up for what they
believe in.

A bold and fresh visual narrative on
Africa, based on newly discovered
archive material covering the struggle
for liberation from colonial rule
in the late ‘60s and ‘70s. An archivedriven documentary and an

AUDRE LORDE:
THE BERLIN YEARS 1984 - 1992
MONDAY 6 OCTOBER
Dir. Dagmar Schultz / 2012 / Germany / 79mins
2012 marks the 20th anniversary
of Audre Lorde’s passing, the
acclaimed Black lesbian feminist
poet and activist. This documentary
explores a little-known chapter of
the writer’s prolific life, a period
in which she helped ignite the
Afro-German Movement and made
lasting contributions to the German
political and cultural scene before
and after the fall of the Berlin
Wall. With testimony from Lorde’s
colleagues, students and friends,
this film documents Lorde’s lasting
legacy in Germany.
TOUBA
MONDAY 20 OCTOBER
Dir. Chai Vasarhelyi / 2013 / USA / 83mins
From director Chai Vasarhelyi
(Youssou N’Dour : I Bring What
I Love), Touba reveals a different
face of Islam, one which is so
essential to these divisive times.
With unprecedented access, the
film chronicles the annual Grand
Magaal pilgrimage of one million Sufi
Muslims to the holy Senegalese city
of Touba. Shot on celluloid film, its
breathtakingly vivid cinematography
by Scott Duncan and integrated
soundtrack elevates it to the level
of a humanist film poem. Wolof and
French with English subtitles.
TOXI
IN COLLABORATION
WITH THE GOETHE-INSTITUT
THURSDAY 9 OCTOBER
Dir. Robert A. Stemmle / 1952 /
West Germany / 88mins
One evening, a well-to-do Hamburg
family finds a five-year-old girl
abandoned at their door. Her name
is Toxi, and she’s black, the daughter
of a deceased German girl and an
American GI. Premiering in August
1952, when the first generation of
those children created by marriages
or liaisons between German women
and American GIs began entering
German schools, this film effectively
details the prejudices then existing
in Germany against mixed marriages
and the children they produced.
Beware of free spirits? Ronald Neame’s
1969 film adaptation of Murial Spark’s
novel is Dead Poets Society for grown
ups. Charismatic art-loving teacher
Miss Brodie is very much a free spirit
constantly at odds with the authorities
in the conservative Edinburgh girls’
school where she works. But is that
really such a good thing? Or is she a
dangerous woman who needs putting
a stop to?
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
THURSDAY 27 NOVEMBER, 6.30PM
Dir. Stanley Kubrick / 1971 / USA / 136mins
A Clockwork Orange has been
accused of glorifying violence. It
shows, to our dismay, that we are all
capable of taking pleasure in brutal
attacks on innocent victims. It’s easy
to wish we didn’t have this attraction
to violence. But what would happen if
we were ‘cured’ of it?

LEGENDS OF LOVE
SUN 26 OCTOBER 3PM – LIVE
This splendid tale of forbidden love,
self-sacrifice, jealousy and suffering
returns to the Bolshoi stage after a
ten-year absence. The Legend of
Love is one of Russian master Yuri
Grigorovich’s earliest choreographic
works, and its storyline explores
the conflict between love and duty
through its two heroines. Featuring
dance movements, sets and
costumes inspired by the Middle
East, this stunning ballet, which
uses pure dance to tell the story, is
further enriched by the talent of the
Bolshoi troupe.
THE PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER
SUN 23 NOVEMBER
3.10PM - RECORDED
With its exotic setting, impressive
parades, spectacular variations and
crowd scenes, this grand 19thcentury Orientalist fantasy is one of
the most remarkable productions
in the Bolshoi’s repertoire. French
choreographer Pierre Lacotte was
exclusively commissioned in 2000
by the Bolshoi Theatre to resurrect
Marius Petipa’s mighty Egyptian
fresco, and he succeeded brilliantly
in giving new life to this forgotten
masterpiece. This lavish production
is loosely based on Théophile
Gauthier’s novel Le Roman
de la Momie.
LA BAYADERE
SUN 7 DECEMBER
3PM – RECORDED
La Bayadère (the word refers to an
Indian temple dancer) is a key work
in the classical repertoire, and this is
a magnificent production. The story
of impossible love between Nikiya
and Solor is set against the backdrop
of a lush, mysterious India. Marius
Petipa’s choreography, here in a new
scenic version by Yuri Grigorovich,
is exquisite; the scene known as
The Kingdom of the Shades is
one of the most celebrated in the
history of ballet. Bolshoi principals
Svetlana Zakharova (Nikiya) and
Maria Alexandrova (Gamzatti) bring
the characters of this romantic ballet
to life.
THE NUTCRACKER
SUN 21 DECEMBER 3PM – LIVE
One of the greatest classics in
the world, with iconic music by
Tchaikovsky, and enchanting sets
and costumes, The Nutcracker
explores the universal themes
of love, power and evil. This
choreographic version, created for
the Bolshoi by Yuri Grigorovich, is
full of romanticism and philosophical
reflections on ideal love. Masterfully
interpreted by the Bolshoi dancers,
it will enchant the whole family for
the festive season, proving that one
is never too young or too old to be
swept away by The Nutcracker.

Dir Jorge R. Gutierrez / 2014 / USA / runtime TBC
Manolo is torn between fulfilling the
expectations of his family and
following his heart. Before choosing
which path to follow, he embarks on
an incredible adventure that spans
three fantastical worlds where he
must face his greatest fears. From
producer Guillermo del Toro and
director Jorge Gutierrez.
Flight of the Navigator / E.T
Dir. Randal Kleisner / 1986 / USA / 90mins
THE NIGHTMARE
BEFORE CHRISTMAS (PG)
SATURDAY 13 DECEMBER
Dir Henry Selick / 1993 / USA / 1 hr 16 mins
In Tim Burton’s stunningly original
and charmingly inventive stop
motion animation, Jack Skellington
- the Pumpkin King - is bored with
his job. When he stumbles upon
Christmastown, Jack decides
the people of Halloweenland are
due for a change, and he and his
spooky subjects set about to hijack
Christmas…
THE MUPPET’S
CHRISTMAS CAROL (U)
SATURDAY 20 DECEMBER
1PM AND KIC START (SEE P2)
SCREENING ON SUNDAY 21
DECEMBER 1PM
Dir. Brian Henson / 1992 / USA / 1 hour 25 mins
Christmas is coming, the goose is
getting fat and Kermit, Rizzo, Gonzo,
Beaker, Fozzy and Miss Piggy are
out in force in this tongue-in-cheek
adaptation of Charles Dicken’s
classic seasonal tale. With Michael
Caine as the straight man and a
gaggle of heart-warming songs to
boot, what better way to get into the
spirit than a romp through Christmas
past, present and future with your
favourite gang of fuzzy, felt puppets?
A twelve-year-old boy is abducted by
an alien spacecraft and is whisked
eight years into the future. Can David
return home to his own time and his
family?
E.T
THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (U)
SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER
Dir. Steven Spielberg / 1982 / USA / 2 hrs 1 min
One of the greatest family films of all
time. A tender, magical story of an
alien visitor who befriends a young
human boy called Elliot. Whether it’s a
first time viewing or a scramble down
a much trodden path, the sight of
bikes soaring through the night sky on
the big screen is not an experience to
be missed!
SUNDAY 2 DECEMBER
THE IRON GIANT (U)
SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER
Dir. Brad Bird / 2000 / USA / 1 hour 23 mins
A film about life, the environment,
courage and pacifism, The Iron
Giant is beautiful, funny and moving
and regularly tops polls of the best
animated films. From the Director
of Ratatouille and The Incredibles
and based on ‘The Iron Man’ by
Ted Hughes. Miss it at your peril!
JOURNEY TO THE
CENTRE OF THE EARTH (U)
Dir. Henry Levin / 1959 / USA / 2 hours 9 mins
A Scottish professor and his band of
colleagues follow an explorer’s trail
down an extinct Icelandic volcano
to the earth’s core. A vivid, actionpacked Jules Verne adventure with
prehistoric beasties and peculiar
plants like you’ve never seen before.
Magnificent special effects still
captivating to this day - if Indiana
Jones had been made in the fifties it
would surely be like this!
