2010 URBANWORLD FILM FESTIVAL
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
Welcome to the 14th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival!
We are thrilled to curate and present this year’s celebration of independent film, which represents the rising tide of
talented filmmakers or color. It is indeed the year of the woman, as witnessed with Kathryn Bigelow’s best director and
best picture win at this year’s Academy Awards. This inspiring movement continues at Urbanworld
with the festival’s Opening & Closing Night films being helmed by brilliant women — Writer/
Director Tanya Hamilton who has enriched us with Night Catches Us and Writer/Director/Producer
Ava duVernay who has graced us with I Will Follow. Both of these cinematic gems not only feature
a feminine sensibility, strength, and complexity behind the lens, but also on camera through
noteworthy performances by leading ladies Kerry Washington and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. We are truly honored to have the accomplished Kerry Washington support Urbanworld as its Festival
Ambassador. Her flourishing career exemplifies a multi-dimensional artistry that has distinguished
her as not only an actor, but also an activist, who empowers communities of color both on and off screen. It is this spirit
of purpose and impact that is likewise reflected in Urbanworld’s 2010 film slate.
my black
is a gift from nature.
Each year, we see an increase in Urbanworld alumni who return to share their progression as filmmakers. Short films
and screenplays become features, actors transition to writer/directors, and marketing/PR mavens transform into selfdistributors of their own content. It is indeed evolution and Urbanworld is blessed to play a role in nurturing this
process. This year’s film slate continues the Urbanworld tradition of presenting diversity and excellence in filmmaking,
with decisive voices leading with confidence, passion, and integrity. Our presenting Sponsor BET Networks continues its unwavering support as a multi-year partner with the festival.
Their presence has become even more robust with the addition of a 2-day Actors Workshop facilitated by Actress Tasha
Smith and presented in collaboration with My Black Is Beautiful, as well as their inaugural TV Writers Competition,
which will award a $5000 prize at the festival’s Filmmaker Awards Brunch.
Without our partners BET Networks and Founding Sponsor HBO, we would be limited in our impact. We are grateful
for their longevity as devoted supporters, as are we with our many other essential sponsors, media partners, staff, and
volunteers. Urbanworld’s reality is a true reflection of all who shape it and, in turn, share it. Thank you to everyone who
has made an indelible imprint on Urbanworld’s past, present, and future. We wish all of our 2010 festival patrons an
extraordinary Urbanworld experience!
Yours In Purpose & Possibility,

Despite industry cynics, the indie film market endures and manages to flex its muscles in new and interesting ways. Filmmakers continue to innovate as content creators, producers, and distributors. With the digital age seamlessly
integrated into everyday life, filmmakers must be expertly equipped with the tools and resources available to fully
capitalize on the 4 screens — movies, TV, online, & mobile — driving this new media frontier. This year, we are proud to
introduce the HBO hosted Urbanworld Digital, an exciting new programming track created in partnership with Jigsaw
Global that will launch the festival with a series of business sessions focused on social media, gaming, and new media
production.

September 2010
Dear Friends:
Welcome to the 14th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City, the independent
film capital of the world!
The Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, created more than forty years ago, is
dedicated to working with filmmakers as they shoot on location in New York City and
serves as a division of the newly created Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. We’re
also committed to diversifying the City’s film and television industry so that it more
accurately reflects our vibrant population and have developed several workforce
development programs to build bridges to help women, people of color and disadvantaged
New Yorkers advance their careers in production.
As the one-stop shop for all production needs in the City, the Office of Film, Theatre and
Broadcasting continues to provide premier customer service – including free exterior
locations, police assistance and parking privileges. We also offer the “Made in NY”
marketing credit, which provides free advertising for films and television shows that shoot
here, and the “Made in NY” Discount Card Program with discounts for productions at over
950 local businesses.
Our website - www.nyc.gov/film - contains a wealth of information for everything you’ll
need to know about filming in New York City. There you can download the required permit
forms, sign up for our monthly electronic newsletter, and view our Hot Shots Photo Library,
a digital catalog that features City-owned properties around the five boroughs. You can also
check out Reel Jobs, a free weekly listing of job opportunities in the City.
I encourage you to contact my office at 311 or 212-NEW-YORK to find out just how easy it
is to film in New York.
Best wishes for a successful and enjoyable festival,
Katherine Oliver

LIVE SCREENPLAY READINGS
Friday, September 17, 2010
3PM - 5PM
The Urbanworld Film Festival will present the 5 finalists in the Screenplay Category to festival attendees in an intimate
event, where their works will be performed live. Each finalist will stage a performance of their chosen screenplay scene,
with actors breathing life into each selected work.
BAG LADIES
GRACEY
JEAN OF THE JONESES
KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT
OSVALDO’S
BAG LADIES follows the
hang-ups of five women
navigating their romantic
lives. Kennedy, Leila and
Monique are longtime
friends, planning one’s
wedding as their
relationships break
down. Chrislyn and Riley
are roommates with
very different methods
of excelling in life... and
love. All must let go of
past hurts before truly
finding happiness.
A former dirty cop is
forced to reenter the
criminal world of his past
for a shot at redemption.
Jean Jones, a gawky
22-year-old, finds new
love unexpectedly in
the back of a Brooklyn
ambulance with
paramedic Ray Malcolm,
but her dysfunctional,
middle class Jamaican
family gets in the way.
The streetwise Kirk
McCants is ambushed
and shot in the head at
point blank range. He
survives with a shaken
memory and seeks to
find out who shot him
and why. His journey
leads him to the truth
about himself and his
circumstances and leaves
him unprepared for
the conflict.
After his mother’s
death, Jerry Vasquez is
thrust into the position
of keeping his family
together. To complicate
matters, his father Juan
Vazquez, owner of the
barbershop Osvaldo’s,
quickly starts a relationship with much younger
hairdresser Luz Serrano.
Before long, tragedy
strikes Jerry and his
sister again.
TAI NELSON is a burgeoning
screenwriter from small
town Apopka, FL. She
is a University of Florida
graduate and former
third grade teacher who
has traveled from coast
to coast and across the
Atlantic. Inspired by these
experiences and the wide
range of people met along
the way, she has developed
a passion for creating new
characters and introducing
them to an audience through
screenwriting. Tai is excited
about Bag Ladies, her
screenwriting debut.
JULIAN BREECE was named
one of IndieWIRE’s young
“filmmakers to watch.” His
debut short, “The Young and
Evil,” was an Official Selection
of the 2009 Sundance Film
Festival. Breece is the creator,
writer, and director of BET’s
hit webseries “Buppies.”
His screenplay BALL was a
2006 Urbanworld Finalist
and a Top 10 Finalist for the
Academy’s Nicholl Fellowship
in Screenwriting.
A Film Independent
Project:Involve Fellow, Breece
is a graduate of Harvard (AB
’03) and USC (MFA ’05).
STELLA MEGHIE is a
Canadian born screenwriter
based in New York.
She graduated from the
University of Waterloo with
a BA in English Language
and Literature. She received
an MA in Screenwriting
and Production from the
University of Westminster
in London. While in England,
Meghie worked as a script
reader for EON Productions.
Born and raised in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
GEMAL WOODS’s eclectic
life experiences have
provided him a unique lens
through which to view the
world. He has worn the shoes
of a graffiti artist, award
winning fine artist, erratic
college student, ex-convict
and devoted father—each
influencing his growing body
of work.
Woods resides in
Washington, D.C. with his
wife Erica, son Excel, and
daughter Truth.
Randy Wilkins received
his B.A. in English from
Franklin and Marshall
College and his MFA from
NYU’s film school. His
short film “Osvaldo’s,”
upon which this screenplay
is based, was a finalist
at the American Black
Film Festival and HBO’s
Short Film Competition,
where it received an
exclusive broadcast
license agreement. Randy
is currently an assistant
editor on his mentor Spike
Lee’s latest film, IF GOD IS
WILLING AND DA CREEK
DON’T RISE.

In 1976, after years of mysterious absence, Marcus returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age in

I WILL FOLLOW
AFRICA RISING
I WILL FOLLOW chronicles a black woman struggling with the death of a loved one as she moves out of the home they
once shared. As her moving day progresses, she is sidetracked by a series of personal encounters that trigger grief, guilt
and eventually, emotional freedom.
Every day, 6,000 girls from the Horn of Africa to sub-Saharan nations are subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM).
With fierce determination and deep love for their communities, brave African activists are leading a formidable, fearless
grassroots movement to end 5,000 years of FGM. An insightful look at the frontlines of a quiet revolution taking the
continent by storm, this extraordinarily powerful film is one of the first to focus on African solutions to FGM.
Ava DuVernay directed and executive produced “My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women in Hip Hop”
for BET as the network’s first-ever original music documentary, which premiered August 2010. She made her feature
directorial debut with the critically-acclaimed 2008 hip hop documentary,“This is the Life.” Winner of Audience
Awards in Toronto, Los Angeles and Seattle, the film was released theatrically and debuted on Showtime in April 2009.
Her narrative feature debut “I Will Follow,” starring Salli Richardson-Whitfield, will make its World Premiere as the
closing night of the Urbanworld Film Festival 2010. DuVernay has worked in the world of film as a marketer for more
than 14 years, forming DVA Media + Marketing in 1999. Her award-winning firm has provided strategy and execution
for more than 80 film and television campaigns for acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Michael
Mann, Robert Rodriguez, Bill Condon, Raoul Peck, Gurinder Chadha and Reggie & Gina Bythewood.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE
SM
From Terence Winter, Emmy® Award-winning writer of “The Sopranos” and Academy® Award-winning director
Martin Scorsese, BOARDWALK EMPIRE is set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol
became illegal throughout the United States.
America in 1920: The Great War was over, Wall Street was about to boom and everything was for sale, even the World
Series. It was a time of change when women got the vote, broadcast radio began and young people ruled the world.
On the beach in southern New Jersey sat Atlantic City, a spectacular resort known as “The World’s Playground,” a place
where the rules didn’t apply. Massive hotels lined its famous Boardwalk, which featured nightclubs, amusement piers
and entertainment that rivaled Broadway. For a few dollars, a working man could get away and live like a king – legally
or illegally.
The undisputed ruler of Atlantic City was the town’s treasurer, Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a political fixer
and backroom dealer who was equal parts politician and gangster and equally comfortable in either role. Because of its
strategic location on the seaboard, the town was a hub of activity for rum-runners, minutes from Philadelphia, hours from
New York City and less than a day’s drive from Chicago. And Nucky Thompson took full advantage.

college in a state of confusion. New relationships with Muslims and non-Muslims alike challenge his already shaken ideals,
and the estrangement with his mother and sister troubles him. With the help of new friends, family and mentors, he
begins to find himself and open up to an Islam he hasn’t been exposed to. But when the attacks of 9/11 happen without
warning, he is forced to face his past and make the biggest decisions of his life.
Nabil Elderkin, originally a native of Australia, began his photography career when he picked up a camera to shoot
portraits of fellow surfers. What started as a hobby rapidly developed into a working career. From surf portraits, Nabil
began shooting musicians and anyone that inspired him. He later moved to the United States to continue to expand his
career. Today, Nabil lives and works in Los Angeles at his studio downtown. He shoots musicians, sports, fashion and
portraiture. Nabil has recently published a book titled “Glow in the Dark” with Kanye West and Rizzoli and has directed
several music videos and documentaries from here to Africa. Traveling is his passion.
Qasim “Q” Basir has been taking the movie industry by storm for years now, but it wasn’t always about the movies. He
was planning on a career in law until he flew through the window of a car during a traffic accident in 2003. He said that
while recovering from his injuries, “I decided I needed to do what I loved, and make a difference while doing so.” That
was making movies. After completing his first project, 1Nation 2Worlds, he began doing just that. He took the film to
Colleges and Universities all over the country, challenging students and professors to open discussions on the important
issue of race. “I feel like ignorance is one of the most significant issues hindering our society today,” says Qasim. His next
film, award winning short “Glimpse,” dealt with a different subject but had the same idea, erasing ignorance. But this
time, as it deals with Muslims in America.
Next, Qasim created a short film series aimed at supporting Presidential candidate Barack Obama. The series, The
Inspiration of Barack: “Yes We Can” Film Series, is a compilation of seven short films all dealing with different people
who become inspired by Obama to take essential steps forward in their lives. The series can now be found on iTunes.

THE INHERITANCE
THE LOTTERY
Five young family friends gather during a winter storm for a ‘secret’ reunion at the family estate. They are all bright and
talented going about their lives as they see best. The connection to their tortured history is one of only passing fascination. They are completely ignorant that every choice they’ve in their lives has actually been made for them. The reunion
turns deadly when the elders have to make good on an ancient pact with a spirit of an ancestor. Now, it’s this generation’s
turn to make the ultimate sacrifice. It is their duty and their destiny, but they won’t give up without a fight to survive.
In a country where 58 percent of African American 4th graders are functionally illiterate, The Lottery uncovers the
failures of the traditional public school system and reveals that hundreds of thousands of parents attempt to flee the
system every year. The Lottery follows four of these families from Harlem and the Bronx who have entered their
children in a charter school lottery. Out of thousands of hopefuls, only a small minority will win the chance of a better
future.
Robert O’Hara received his Directing MFA from Columbia University School of Arts and has become an accomplished

Direction of the World Premiere of the critically acclaimed In The Continuum and is now nominated for a 2010 NAACP
theater award.
Madeleine Sackler co-directed her first film, Mechina: A Preparation, in 2005 and went on to work on MTV’s
Human Giant. She then edited short documentary pieces for clients including Trudie Styler, Moxie Pictures, and
a-political. Returning to feature-length documentaries, she became part of the research team for Martin Scorsese’s
Shine a Light and worked as an editor for the documentary on Oscar-winner Howard Shore’s new opera, The Fly. The
Lottery (2010) marks her directorial debut.
Los Angeles based producer Effie T. Brown received a degree in film production and thEater from Loyola Marymount University before going on to participate in Film Independent’s (formerly IFP/Los Angeles) Project Involve. CALLBACK

family’s long-owned taxi stand. “The Stand” has been the source of all activity and money for the family for sixty years,
and now Bilal is destined to carry the torch. Yet despite a series of setbacks at home, Bilal secretly submits a college

running The Stand – the only life he has ever known – or take a chance at social mobility.
Paris, present day. Grace is an unknown actress who just turned forty. When she learns that a Hollywood production is
shooting in France, she is determined to get a part. As it so happens, the female lead role has become available and
Grace seizes the opportunity and gives it her all, training intensively with her acting coach and boyfriend Ricardo, then
actually sneaking into the audition! She meets casting director CJ and blows him away with her monologue. Things seem
hopeful indeed when Grace receives a message requesting a callback. Only one problem. The meeting is to take place
at CJ’s hotel room at midnight...

A botched car-jacking forces two white-collar criminals to take refuge in the home of the thugs that accosted them.

MONEY MATTERS
SUS
The story introduces us to Monique Matters aka Money, 14 years old living in Southeast Washington, DC, the roughest
area of the city. She catches three buses across town to go to a Catholic school where she is seen as ‘different’, and
at home her relationship with her mother, Pamela Matters, is far from healthy. Pamela is a young mother that forces
religion on Money because of her own guilt. Money coexists within two worlds but doesn’t feel comfortable in either
one. Money Matters is an intimate, moving exploration of female relationships that delves into the lives of a single
mother and her teenaged daughter as they trudge across terrains of doubt and insecurity to find their own roads of
self-discovery.
1979: Election Night - A police interview room. Delroy’s pregnant wife has been found dead in a pool of blood and he
is brought in as the chief suspect. He is interrogated by D.S. Karn, a witty, psychotic racist and his violent sidekick D.C.
Wilby. Both high on the prospect of a Conservative landslide victory they try to lure him into a quick confession. Callous
humiliation gives way to a barrage of sinister violence, leading to a devastating conclusion.
Ryan Richmond is a Washington, D.C. native and a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Richmond’s directorial debut film MONEY MATTERS, was the first Short to be nominated for the Independent Feature
Project’s (IFP’s) Gordon Parks Award (2001). He developed the short film into a feature screenplay, which was selected
by Tribeca Film Festival’s All Access Program, won UrbanWorld Film Festival’s HBO Screenplay Competition and won 2nd
place for the Larry Neal Dramatic Writing Competition.

and Ryan is producing a four-part documentary series with Spike Lee on President Barack Obama for A&E Indie Films
(A&E Channel).
38 | NARRATIVE FEATURES
From Barrie Keeffe, the writer of the British classic ’The Long Good Friday’ and based on a true story, SUS is a
gripping and emotionally fuelled drama, with dialogue crackling in humor and insight. It is also a powerful outcry against
institutional racism and of course the ever controversial SUS laws. It pulls no punches in its depiction of a corrupt system
that fails the very people it should protect.
A NOTE FROM THE WRITER BARRIE KEEFE
I wrote SUS shortly after Margaret Thatcher was swept to power in May 1979 and told the world from the doorway of
Number Ten, “Where there is discord may we bring harmony. Where there is despair may we bring hope.” Living in South
East London at the time where the British Fascists were causing fear and havoc I felt very little hope and wrote the play.
The story was a true incident I had covered as a reporter on a local weekly newspaper many years before but it wasn’t
until Thatcher took up the reins that I found the backdrop for the play - election night, the “new dawn” as Karn chillingly
puts it. I’m saddened that this piece of work I wrote thirty years ago and thought was exactly, as one critic called it, a
piece “instant political theatre” actually does have a painful resonance now.

FINDING GOD IN THE CITY OF ANGELS
Celebrating the multicultural diversity of spiritual life in Los Angeles, “Finding God in the City of Angels” explores
the varied ways in which different communities engage their sacred texts or “scriptures,” whether in worship, prayer,
song, dance, performance, art, storytelling or ministry. From a small Skid Row church in downtown Los Angeles to a
massive Chinese Buddhist temple in Hacienda Heights; from an Orthodox Jewish synagogue on Venice Beach to an
alternative religious group that meets in a hair salon in Inglewood; from the first Indigenous Peoples of Los Angeles to
the Goddess Temple of Orange County, “Finding God in the City of Angels” explores the diverse ways in which
different communities live their “scriptures.”
Jennifer Jessum is an award winning director, choreographer and producer from New York City. She holds an M.F.A.,
in film production, from USC’s School of Cinema/Television and an M.F.A., in dance, from New York University’s Tisch
School of Arts where she did work in dance, music, and film and attended on a full fellowship. She has produced and
directed numerous short films, music videos, and commercials and has had her choreography and films commissioned

GROWN IN DETROIT
NI WAKATI (IT’S TIME!)
Just imagine… Teen moms becoming Urban Farmers. Utopia? Not in Detroit! The hometown of mass production is
turning green again. The disappearance of the auto industry transformed the once wealthiest city of America into a villa
ghetto. Amidst all this misery, the ‘forgotten’ residents have surprisingly emerged with their own solutions. Nature is
taking over the city and the new generation is taught to harvest its profit.
Ni Wakati re-introduces Africa’s rich diversity to the rest of the World, as M1(of Dead Prez) and Umi (of POW) travel
to East Africa to serve as unique cultural ambassadors helping to bridge the gap between the distantly related Africans
worldwide. They connect with Ukoofulani Mau Mau a revolutionary youth movement of artists based in Nairobi. They collectively travel to Tanzania where they unite with former Black Panther members Pete O’Neal and Mama Charlotte. The
gap between the young and old is bridged as they collectively shine a light on Africa’s resilience, possibility and potential.
Dutch filmmakers Mascha and Manfred Poppenk, both partners privately and in business, make documentaries
that are as close to reality as possible. Without staging or guidance they are true cinéma vérité documentary makers.
They met in Africa working on the wildlife film ‘Serengeti Symphony’ with Emmy award-winner Baron Hugo van Lawick.
Their filmmaking vision turned out to be harmonious and there was that inevitable click. From that moment on
they have joined their qualities in making numerous award-winning documentaries.

Streetball is a fast paced documentary that tells the stories of South Africa’s 2008 Homeless World Cup team. The
Homeless World Cup is an annual soccer tournament that draws teams from over 56 countries—comprised entirely of
street people. Streetball is a story of hope and of the resilience that dwells within the human spirit. But while these
men’s’ dreams are simply to have a home and to be recognized as people who need care, often times the realization of
those dreams is accompanied by a sobering reality.
Demetrius Wren began his artistic training at an early age after enrolling in the Davidson Fine Arts School in Augusta,

3 FACES OF EVELYN is a short comedy narrative
loosely inspired by the Academy Award winning
movie “The Three Faces of Eve” and informed by the
2008 Presidential Election. Evelyn – battling multiple
personalities -- attends an impromptu session with her

Dr. McKenna, have a mutual breakthrough.
Evander Bridges is a struggling actor whose every

when offered a substantial amount of money and not
being presented with any other opportunities. CASTING
NOTICE follows Evander’s journey as he decides whether
or not to take the role.

THE REAL T
THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES
The purpose of “The Real T” is to plant the idea in
the minds of viewers that thinking positively can attract
constructive outcomes. To raise the question “what if it
were impossible to fail?” Could it be as simple as making
the choice to be an optimist or as complex as continuing
a calamity filled life.
The Truth About Lies, spin the bullet on the thin
dividing veil between who we are and what we do. Not
your typical “date movie,” ‘Lies,’ not only gives insight
to the male perspective on disclosure and trust in
relationships—but pays the price of intimacy in blood.
As a director this is Ohene Cornelius’ first film.
He has directed numerous music videos and has even
produced a few. He is looking to do more acting and
directing in the near future……For pay of course.
Sharaya Howell is a native of Hawaii but grew up in
Jersey City, New Jersey. She has always been inspired
by media with a message. “The Real T” is her debut
film that she knows will impact the world one viewer at
a time.
SHALAKO L. GORDON has just completed the highly
anticipated short film, “The Truth About Lies.” “The Truth
About Lies” is a powerful yet wonderfully entertaining
story, complete with an amazing cast and first class

is truly an example. Having written, directed and coproduced, “The Truth About Lies,” Shalako is currently
developing a feature length film called “FLAWLESS.”

rave reviews by critics and audiences alike and scored a
#1 ranking at the box office in October of 1999. Lee then
directed the action comedy UNDERCOVER BROTHER with
Eddie Griffin and Chris Kattan in May of 2002 to stellar
reviews. His 3rd feature, ROLL BOUNCE for Fox 2000
and Fox Searchlight, debuted September 2005. Lee’s
critically acclaimed films – WELCOME HOME ROSCOE
JENKINS (with Martin Lawrence) and SOUL MEN (with
Samuel L. Jackson & Bernie Mac) – bowed in 2008. In
