The Regals Mopar Club Newsletter Sep
Page 2 REGALS TORQUE Welcome to the first official newsletter of The Regals Mopar Car Club! I must say a thank you to the committee for letting me be part of such a great club and helping out with being the Editor of the newsletter. Some great plans in place for the Regals moving forward and we need everyone's help to make the Regals the best club around and the club the people want to join. Welcome to issue 1 of The Regals Mopar Car Club Inc Newsletter. As this is our first official publication, I’ll start with a brief history of the club. The club was conceived in Western Sydney by a small group of Mopar enthusiasts at the start of 2008. We all wanted to be part of a club, but we had our own idea of what style of club we wanted to be involved in. After some research and discussions with likeminded individuals we decided there was enough interest to form our own club, and the idea was born. After months of discussion, organisation and hard work, a committee was formed, and the club was registered with the Department of Fair Trading in February of 2009. I was pleased to see that there was immediate interest in “The Regals”, and it didn’t take long Page 3 Currently the newsletter will be a bi-monthly publication and hopefully into 2010 it will be a monthly release and that’s why we need members help with any articles that can be included. Always after articles on build ups, projects on the go, event reports, old ads and anything you think would be interesting to read about. It’s always great receiving a club for the word to spread about “that new club” in Sydney. This was soon followed by a killer website, which I am proud to say receives compliments all the time. Our membership is growing at a healthy pace, and we look forward to inviting new Mopar fans to the club as time goes on. These are exciting times for Mopar owners, as our cars are growing in popularity every day. It’s interesting to know that there are so many nice cars out there, and through the club, we hope to bring them out of the sheds and onto the streets! With that in mind, please have a good look through the recently launched “Gallery” section of the website. There are some awesome rides, and a few weapons “in the build”. As I write, I have recently come back from the newsletter in the mail and even better when it’s a great read so let’s make the “Regals Torque” the best Club Newsletter around. We’ll hopefully have more articles on members vehicles in future issues. Hope you enjoy the historic first issue of the “Regals Torque” and many more to come.. Cheerz, Pana Hunter Valley Chrysler Club’s Wake Run. It was a fantastic weekend run by great people. Please enjoy the review on page XX of this publication. It won’t be long until The All Day Chrysler Day, where we intend to put on a display showcasing some of the wicked cars we have in the club already. Please don’t forget about our own “Pre All Day Chrysler Run” on October 31st. I hope you can all make it. Additionally, thanks to those who joined us on our last club cruise. Please check the “Events” page of the website for future cruise dates. Keep on cruising! Chris Mede President. The Regals Mopar Car Club Inc. I rang the grandfather of the girl who sold me the car and he gave me a long and overly detailed account of the cars history. The car was originally purchased in August 1967 by Maurice Johnstone Senior in Canberra ACT from Commonwealth Motors and was the first VE Regal EVER to be on the road in Australia! He bought it after he retired to use as a weekend and holiday car. It lived with Maurice and Edna Johnstone in Forrest, ACT from 1967 till 1969. In 1969 Maurice and Edna moved to Beacon Hill, NSW in which during that time it was stolen and found three days latter in Bankstown with the only damage being to the back drivers side window as this was the thieves point of entry. In 1971 they moved back to the ACT in the suburb of Holt. The VE stayed in Holt until Maurice Johnstone senior passed away in 1993 in which the settlement of his estate took place and the VE was passed onto his son, Maurice Johnstone Junior in 1994. It was the taken back to NSW and stayed in Nowra where Maruice Junior lived and it was registered for 1 year with NSW plates. Between 1995-99, the car was placed on blocks in storage and left unregistered for that time. In 1999 Maurice JNR moved to the suburb of Chisholm, ACT where the car was moved again. It was only driven a handful of times between 1999 to 2006 when he passed it on to his grand daughter Kate during 2006. The car was transported to Waterford, QLD where Kate lived. She had it garaged and drove it very rarely in those years. Kate's ex-husband was a Valiant die hard so he serviced the car and had minor panel repairs done. When Kate separated form her husband some time mid 2009 and when her daily car began to blow smoke, she looked to sell the VE to fund a new car. She answered my Mopar Market ad and we struck a deal. I flew up and drove the car back on the 28th August 2009 from Brisbane to Sydney with no major issues. The car has the original paint except for minor panel repairs (front passenger quarter, passenger side under doors have had attention). The tyres are from 1987 and haven't needed changing due to the low milage. They are what is on the car now. It is a genuine 20,000 mile engine. Passenger side door handle was replaced in the 1970's. All original service logs and receipts have come with the car. There you have it! Some history there, all in the one family…. Vehicle now owned by Regal, Gordon Kyd. Page 7 REGALS TORQUE ‘Remember the past & celebrate the future’ was the Hunter Valley Chrysler Club saying for the 2009 Canton Beach Wake Run, & celebrate we did, the future was in your face with black Regals T shirts & Mopar tattoos no matter where you looked. bright to a heavenly white interior of a gorgeous red 70 Dodge superbee looking as nasty as it did almost 40 years ago, but around every corner there was someone new to meet & talk to & it was interesting to hear about other Mopar lovers cars. The Club members arrived with a reputation that takes others years to build, we were looked upon as newcomers, upcoming, young & vibrant & at the same time a feared Mopar Car Club, with 2 of our members taking out awards in the top 10, this was the first step to letting the world know who we are. To those of you who did not get a chance to attend I hear the Regals Ladies & Gents had an awesome weekend with some Friday & Saturday night drinking episodes, but I was impressed & happy to see all of them back on there feet nice & early on Sunday morning with there cars all lined up & ready to show them off. But it wasn’t all about the Regals, I must mention a job well done to the HVCC for organizing such a great day, & also a thank you to all who made it out for the weekend, there was just over 100 Mopars in attendance. It was 99% old school cars, in total there were about 4 Mopars that were born within the last 5 years from The Dodge Nitro & Avenger to a couple of tidy Chrysler 300’s & please don’t hurt me but I must mention the PT Cruisers as well. The location was great, it was a beautiful sunny day by the water & entrants cars were gleaming & showing all there true potential, from the sexy 70 Cuda supercharger with its chrome shining REGALS TORQUE this & a handful of that, VH Charger RT to VG Hardtop Pacer, Regals to Town & Country, Dodge to Plymouth & Chryslers to Desotos, it was all there for you to see originals & replicas, Convertibles & Hardtops, Utes & wagons. Overall a great show, I would love to attend again next year, the Hunter Valley guys & gals are a very friendly crowd & catered to everyone’s needs, it was well run with no chaos or politics such as some other shows I have attended. See ya at Rollin Rumble….. Event Report by George “Dr” Tatsis Thank you to our club members who were able to bring there cars, and thanks to the rest of the crew who attended.. All makes & models were on show, since it was not such a big outcome of cars it was easier to enjoy the ones that were there, you only had a handful of Page 8 REGALS TORQUE Page 9 REGALS TORQUE Page 10 THE REGALS MOPAR CAR CLUB EVENTS CALENDER 2009 DATE CLUB EVENT 12.09.2009 Chrysler Cruzers 3rd Annual Chrysler Country Carnival 19.09.2009 St Lukes Car and Bike Show St Lukes Car & Bike Show 11:00am Cnr Northumberland & Elizabeth Sts, Liverpool 20.09.2009 Historic Sports & Racing Car Assoc HSRCA Racing Event 9:00am Wakefield Park Raceway 20.09.2009 Burwood Festivals Classic Cars 16th Annual Show and Shine Burwood Park, Burwood Road, Burwood 26.09.2009 Blue Mountains Hot Rod Club Real Fine Stuff Auto Display Londonderry Oval, 27.09.2009 American Car Club Aust. Chris Mede. Nickname? Frank the Tank. Age? 34. Occupation? Printer technician. Family? Single. Kids? None. When did you first get into Chryslers? When I was about 12. What enticed your loyalty to Mopars? I was always a Mopar fan from the start. I’ve never really been into Holden’s or Fords, and I’ve only owned one car that wasn’t a Val, and it’s my work car. Mopars command total respect, and the cars make it pretty easy for one to be loyal to the brand. Current ride/s? 1970 VG 770 Regal Hardtop modified. 1970 VG Pacer Hardtop. 1997 Magna wagon work hack. Vehicle specs? 1970 VG 770 Regal Hardtop 360ci 60thou over, mildly ported heads, match ported edelbrock 4 barrel manifold, Carter 625cfm AFB, mild cam, externally balanced, Romac balancer, belt drive, extractors, 2 ½ “ system with Hooker Aero Chambers, ½ inch fuel line. 4 speed single rail, standard clutch, shortened 9 “ diff with 3.25 lsd centre. K frame mounted rack and pinion, braced LCA’s, sub-frame connectors, mini tubs, relocated rear springs, after market front discs and hubs, BA calipers, EL rear calipers/discs/hand brake set up. 18 x 7 and 18 x 10 ROH Modena’s, 235 and 295 tyres. Deep Red Pearl (Dodge colour) and Chateau beige on the boot. Rear quarter reflectors have been deleted. Custom SAAS black velour seats, velour head lining and Autoteknica steering wheel. 1970 VG Pacer Hardtop The car is Hot Mustard with the T14 option (radial tyres). It currently runs a 265ci with a 4 speed. It needs a full restoration, which will commence in the following months. Any builds on the go at the moment? Just finished doing a V8/auto/disc brake conversion with my brother on his VC. Any future project ideas? Plenty! If you could have any vehicle what would it be? I’ll build it one day! Page 14 REGALS TORQUE What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Hanging out with friends, playing with cars, improving my house, playing guitar and music, a quite drink now and then (lol), the usual stuff. Best Car event you have attended? Powercruise is pretty hard to beat these days, but Top fuel drags and nostalgic drags are fun too. What things would you like to see in a Car Club? Exactly what I see in The Regals I suppose. Good people, cool cars, cool club house, families welcome, no hierarchy, well organized and plenty of plans for the future. People should be proud of the club they are in. Best vehicle you’ve ever owned? I suppose my current Hardtop is, but my first hardtop is a sentimental favorite. It was an animal, but it looked like a heap of shit! Any cars you regret selling? Would anyone ever answer no to this question!? My old Hardtop I suppose. Any Mopar vehicles have impressed you lately that you have seen at shows etc..? Yes VGVAL a white mini tubbed VG sedan with triples on a 265 seen at COTM. I‘m sure there’s many more, but that one that comes to mind. Any words of advice for someone starting in the hobby? Join The Regals! Seriously, align yourself with some decent people who know what they’re doing, or join a club to make good contacts or you could end up handing over a lot of hard earned money for little reward. Page 15 REGALS TORQUE REGALS TORQUE Page 16 REGALS TORQUE Page 17 REGALS TORQUE Page 18 Here’s a few pics of the first VG Pacer built. It is body number VG-7-S-41-1 This car is still residing in Adelaide and currently under restoration. The J42 Big Tank was not factory fitted but installed at a later date. It is a standard Pacer in Hemi Orange with bonnet blackout mod pack but not with A88 stripe package. A bit of an oddball. Unfortunately the matching numbers engine is long gone but this car was passed down from Father to Son who is now restoring. Hopefully this car will one day see it’s former glory as this is an important piece of Chrysler Australia motoring history. REGALS TORQUE Page 19 Newly issued alcohol warnings The Toronto Board of Health has proposed that warning signs be placed on all alcohol bottles to tip off drinkers about the possible peril of drinking a pint or two of any alcoholic beverage. 1. WARNING: Consumption of alcohol may cause you to wake up with a breath that could knock a buzzard off a wreaking dead animal that is one hundred yards away. 2. WARNING: Consumption of alcohol is a major factor in dancing like an idiot. 3. WARNING: Consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell the same boring story over and over again until your friends want to assault you 4. WARNING: Consumption of alcohol may cause you to thay shings like thish. 5. WARNING: Consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell the boss what you really think of him. 6. WARNING: Consumption of alcohol is the leading cause of inexplicable rug burn on the forehead. 7. WARNING: Consumption of alcohol may create the illusion that you are tougher, handsomer and smarter than some really, really big guy named Psycho Bob. Reasons to allow drinking at work The below are valid reasons as to why drinking should be allowed at work. If you use them wisely, you may even be able to convince your boss into allowing alcohol. 1. It's an incentive to show up. 2. It reduces stress. 3. It leads to more honest communications. 4. It reduces complaints about low pay. 5. It cuts down on time off because you can work with a hangover. 6. Employees tell management what they think, not what management wants to hear. 7. It helps save on heating costs in the winter. 8. It encourages carpooling. 9. Increases job satisfaction because if you have a bad job you don't care. 10. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work. 11. It makes fellow employees look better. 12. It makes the cafeteria food taste better.13. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are wasted.
