SACRAMENTO PUBLIC LIBRARY www.saclibraryfoundation.org Advocacy. FOUNDATION News Advocating for stronger libraries and advocating for children are what the Board and Staff of the Sacramento Public Library Foundation are doing to make Sacramento a stronger community. Mary Ellen Shay, Kristan Otto, and April Butcher are all volunteering their time and talents to the Measure B support committee to make sure that the tax augmentation for City Libraries passes on June 3, 2014. Past and present Foundation board members and Foundation staff are holding house parties to educate community members ad•vo•ca•cy about the Library and the Measure B initiative. Mary 1. the act or Ellen Shay and April Butcher are bringing Land Park process of residents together on April 25, Patty Fairbanks is supporting teaming up with Mimi and Burnett Miller in East Sacramento on April 30, and Kristan Otto is gathering a cause or neighbors in Campus Commons on May 6. At these proposal : the house parties, Library Director Rivkah Sass and/ act or process or City Councilmember Angelique Ashby will give an update on the Library and the importance of Measure of advocating B. And finally, through interest earned on unrestricted investments, the Foundation has given nearly $32,000 something to this effort through education and direct campaign support. In addition to advocating for the Library as a whole, the Foundation is also advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves – children. Right now literacy rates as measured by grade level reading are alarmingly low. Less than 37% of Sacramento’s fourth graders are at grade level reading. The library is a place a child can not only learn to read, but learn the joy of reading. They can check out books of their own, which for many children, is a little like having another birthday. When children gain a love for reading, their confidence grows and their ability to learn increases. The Foundation is supporting the Library’s Summer Reading Program over the next several years and working on helping the Library increase the numbers of Children who participate. In addition, the Foundation is looking to put literacy vans in low income communities so that kids who can’t get to the library can still have access to the library. In order to ensure the stability and growth of these initiatives beyond the next few years, the Foundation is establishing an endowment that will be dedicated to keeping these programs operating. Perhaps one day in the future, a young adult from Sacramento will say, “Reading is what we do as a community in Sacramento.” April-May, 2014 Mission: To enhance the Library’s ability to serve the community by raising private funds. Vision: The Foundation will increase endowments and total revenues to fund programs that promote children’s literacy. Our Goals: Increase total annual revenues with an emphasis on funding children’s literacy programs without sacrificing traditional program funding. Develop approaches to increase funding for Foundation operations independent of funds raised for the library. Enhance the capacities of leadership particularly in the area of fundraising. Mistress of Ceremonies and host for Capital Public Radio’s Insight segment Beth Ruyak kept the room happily moving through a packed evening of authors who circulated to tables, to talk about their work, an auction offering additional author experiences, and a well-received keynote address. “Once Orville {Schell} began to speak, not a single person left their table until he was done,” noticed longtime supporter M.J. Hamilton. Orville Schell delighted guests with his depth of knowledge and ability to make the current and past issues surrounding China accessible and interesting. Don Brodeur mentioned a week later, “I could have listened to Orville speak all night.” In addition to our keynote, authors from around the state gave our audiences a more personalized literacy experience. Referring to Anthony Marra, Lisa Woodard-Mink said, “he was so personable and humble and then he mentioned that he was going to New York to receive an award.” This year’s Author’s Selection Committee, led by Kathy Les, did an incredible job of bringing an amazing group of authors to Authors on the Move. Photos clockwise from top left: Councilmember Angelique Ashby, author Keenan Norris, guest Cindy Woodward, keynote speaker Orville Schell at book signing. Auctioneer Pat Hume kept bidders engaged and, during this year’s Summer Reading paddle raise, helped garner $60,650 dollars of support for the Library’s Summer Reading Program. Reversing the summer slide in reading skills is a challenge for all families and the Library’s summer reading program aims to be part of the solution! The organic and locally farmed dinner by Chef Jason Poole, paired with S & L Wines, topped the evening with culinary satisfaction! A special thank you goes out to our authors who helped make the live auction better than ever! Allison Brennan, Bill Markley, Bob Madgic, Cheewa James, Chris Enss, Chuck McFadden, Eileen Rendahl, John Lescroart, Johnny Boggs, Judith Horstman, Karen Levy, Keith & Maryellen Burns, Kirstin Chen, Marci Nault, Michael Spurgeon, Sasha Abramsky, Sherry Monahan, Tess Taylor and Will Bagley. The combined professionalism of Beth, Pat, Orville, the authors at tables, and the hotel team behind the scenes made this year’s Authors on the Move a memorable and gratifying evening for all! Thank you to all of our donors who took part in this year’s Authors on the Move. We really appreciate your support! East Meets West Hoe Down Get Your Tickets and Join in the Fun. Saddle up with western authors for an East Meets West Hoe Down at the downtown Pagoda building on June 25, 2014. This is a different kind of author experience reflecting how the West and East cultures have come together in California. You will dosey-doe with six award-winning authors including Will Bagley, Chris Enss, Sherry Monahan, Cheewa James, Johnny Boggs, and Chris Enss Nancy Plain. Food powerhouses Mulvaney’s B & L and Fats Family of Restaurants are partnering up to provide tasty appetizers and complimentary wine will be served. And finally the new Confucius Institute at UC Davis is wrangling up a demonstration on how to make and serve up Chinese dumplings. A big thank you to Tom Naygrow, who has graciously offered the Pagoda building at 429 J St (Downtown at 5th & J Streets) to make this event come to life! The event will go from 5 p.m. to 8.p.m. Parking across the street is easy and inexpensive. Entrance is $50 per head so call 916.264.2990 and let us know how many tickets you’re riding into town with. On May 6, 2014 the Sacramento Region Community Foundation is conducting a region-wide “Day of Giving. Donations made on this day will be partially matched, making it a value-added day to give. You get this newsletter because you give, so if you have a friend that does not give, please tell them about the work of the Library Foundation and how their first gift can make a difference. Meet Our Board of Directors Sacramento Public Library (Kristan) is serving Foundation Board Member Kristan as treasurer of the Otto, who describes herself as “not a tax advocate” is, nonetheless, Yes on Measure B an advocate for Measure B, the support committee... $12 additional library levy on the Sacramento City June 2014 ballot. She is a developer with The Ross Company as her firm. She has also served with SACTO, a group that works to develop and encourage more businesses to come to or grow in Sacramento. She sees library services, with schools and public safety, as the essentials in a healthy, prosperous, desirable community. She is serving as treasurer of the Yes on Measure B support committee to help our City Libraries maintain locations, hours, and services. Otto has had a lifelong interest in horseback riding. She grew up in a home on the edge of Sacramento’s development and could visit horses in the pasture near their property. Her parents got her lessons and horse jumping became a passion – until she fell too many times and received concussions that ended the activity. Now she visits her horse, a very large pet. Aside from working in real estate development consulting, her current passion is shot put at the Olympic Masters level. If you think about throwing an eight pound object 25 feet, you’ll have a sense of the strength and balance training that this sport entails. She is proud to compete with other people who are in professional sports activity. In fact, she has just completed her first throw that involves the twisting “put” that you see in video footage – a feat of balance that achieves real distance. Otto co-chaired the recent Authors on the Move as part of the Foundation’s advocacy and fundraising for the library. She continues to push for the good of the whole community by creating awareness of the need for accessible resources for everyone across all ages and incomes. Advocacy Update Councilmember Angelique Ashby Learning How to Be There For Our Libraries... When I ran for office in 2010 to join the Sacramento City Council I knew I would be fighting for neighbors, parks, public safety, employment opportunities, and infrastructure projects, but I did not anticipate a need to fight for libraries. Maybe that is because I took for granted that the libraries have always been there in my lifetime. Like many folks, when I was young I participated in summer reading programs. As a teen, and later as a college student, libraries were the perfect spot to study and do research. Now, as a Mom and community leader, the library is a great place to take my kids and to host neighborhood events. I can succinctly tell you all about what libraries have meant to me. I think most people can tell you how libraries, It is not just in one form or another, about what the have offered them access, libraries have connectivity, done for us, it’s parity and opportunity. also about what But the we need to do for question I am asking our libraries... at this point in my life and career is more John F. Kennedy ‘esque’. It is not just about what the libraries have done for us, it’s also about what we need to do for our libraries right now. How do we ensure the long term funding necessary to sustain the stability our libraries need in order to continue providing vital services to our communities? In Sacramento the answer to that question is a citywide campaign to support additional funding by way of a ballot measure this June to enhance the funding for our libraries. The measure is identified by the letter “B” and as such has been tagged “Be there for your libraries!” The effort to pass this measure started long ago and included an intensive partnership between the library leadership and the most organized and supportive library organizations (Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation). The success of this ballot measure hinges on the relationship built between these three entities. There are several key principles: keep costs low, educate the public, empower volunteers, build a strong consensus, and develop a strategic campaign to move things forward. But all of that’s just political rhetoric without the team in place to implement. As Chair of the Library Authority and Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Sacramento, I am driven to see this ballot measure through. As a community member, Mom, lifelong learner, lawyer, and business owner, I have a renewed gratitude for all of the people who have dedicated time, money, and resources to “being there for our libraries” all along. It is that foundational long term commitment that enables an effort like Sacramento’s Measure B to ever have a fighting chance at appropriately funding our libraries. Thank You!
