Strategic Planning – Diversity and Inclusion Regional Diversity Roundtable Waheeda Rahman June 10, 2015 Diversity for Life Five years ago, The Scarborough Hospital set upon a new vision: To be recognized as Canada s leader in providing the best health care for a global community. It was a vision we took to heart. Our community is one of the most diverse in the country; improving outcomes and providing outstanding patient care experiences mean deeply understanding every person s unique needs. Why Diversity Matters We can think of more than 625,930 reasons to value diversity at The Scarborough Hospital, one for every person in Scarborough. Here are just a few of the benefits that diversity, equity and inclusion are delivering to our community. • Improved access to health services • Optimal patient experiences • Patient safety and quality care • Improved health outcomes • Patient trust and satisfaction • Increased staff satisfaction and engagement • A culture of inclusivity and acceptance • Ability to attract diverse talent • Accountability to our stakeholders • Community connections and partnerships Three Areas of Focus That Guided Our Approach Our Patients Our Staff Our Partners • Client-‐centric focus • We aim to exceed the highest expecta8ons of our pa8ents and families. • We don’t just serve a global community, we are a global community. • Diverse Staff + Equity=Inclusive Org • Diverse Community • Our commitment to care goes beyond our walls. Demographics Initiatives Over the Last 5 Years • Patients - A comprehensive program to assist patients who encounter language barriers at the hospital, including on-site, phone and sign language interpretation, as well as signage, wayfinding and patient materials in multiple languages; • Patients- A Chronic Disease Prevention Model that provides an equitable approach to how care should be delivered based on each person s distinct needs; • Partners- Engaging in a number of academic research studies to help the hospital better understand how to deliver care to a diverse community; • Staff- A Performance Development and Review Process that includes evaluating staff on their Interpersonal and Diversity Fluency ; Initiatives (cont d) • Staff- A dynamic educational curriculum for staff and physicians to support education around diversity, equity and inclusion, including mandatory training for management staff on how to lead a diverse workforce; • Patients/Community- Opening the Global Community Resource Centre in June 2012 in partnership with 14 community agencies in Scarborough in order to empower patients and families with increased health literacy and better access to community services; • Patients- Leading over 1,000 community outreach and engagement activities to help our community better understand their health care options, navigate services and to solicit their input on hospital programs and service delivery. Lessons Learned • Need Executive Sponsor – President/Executive Director **** • Employee Engagement Score rated diversity as a top organizational strength. • Organizational Culture shift takes a long time. • Building partnerships = Building Capacity • Policies can t be stand-alone • Embed diversity in every aspect of your organization s work is crucial. • Learn from others in other industries/organizations • Measuring successes is key!! Focus for the Future As we embark on our new strategic plan, one thing remains certain: We will continue to pursue diversity and health equity, enabling us to continue offering exceptional patient care and an inclusive and welcoming environment for all!
