News from
City Hall
by Timothy Bates,
Clermont Council Member,
Seat 1
In early July, Michael Prestridge
with the Lake County property
appraiser’s office spoke at a
meeting and gave us preliminary 2013 tax numbers.
He is estimating our overall taxable value being up
2.8%, new construction up 19.6% and vacant land
values up 8%.
The city council is hoping to help impact our tourist
revenues and increase the economic development
in the city. We are looking into building a rowing
complex on Lake Minneola. The city hopes to attract
collegiate rowers into Clermont to train during the
winter months and bring national competitions into the
city throughout the year.
Lake County School Board members voted to end
courtesy busing for students to Clermont middle and
elementary. The change affects those living within
a few miles of the schools. There may be more
students walking and riding bikes, please be cautious
while driving near the schools.
Lake County hospitals must now take patients that are
transported by an ambulance to the hospital within 30
minutes of arrival. In the past, paramedics remained
with patients until hospitals were able to provide
a room, in some cases this took several hours.
Officials are hoping this new policy will help get the
paramedics back on the road and help hospitals
become more efficient.
The City of Clermont had the 3rd Community Forum
on July 24th. We had another great turnout. Many
residents spoke about their thoughts on the future of
Clermont and I believe some good ideas came out
of this forum. The downtown area was a main focus
point of discussion. It was clear to me that residents
are wanting more things to do downtown. Thank you
for everyone who attended.
Clermont primary elections were held on August 13.
City Council seat 2 was the only race on the ballot.
Ray Goodgame received over 50% of the votes.
Therefore, there will not be a November election
for seat 2. There will however, be a race with two
candidates for seat 4. Be sure to vote.
As always, please let me know what I can do for you.
God Bless,
Timothy Bates,
City of Clermont Council Member

What is an Emergency Flashing
Light Switch?
An Emergency Flashing Light Switch allows you to
alert 911 Emergency responders where your home is
located after you’ve placed an emergency phone call.
It is a minimal cost with maximum benefit.
GE 911 Emergency Flashing Light Switch 50269
When you dial 911 for emergency assistance every
second counts. Often precious minutes are wasted
trying to locate the correct house. The Emergency
Light Switch insurers that your house will be found as
quickly as possible. You simply replace the standard
front porch light switch with the Emergency Light
Switch.
If you need to dial 911 for help you can tell the
operator to look for the flashing porch light. You
then move the switch to the flashing position and
your porch light will flash continuously to signal the
emergency personnel trying to find you.
After help arrives you can move the switch to the
constant on or off position. (There are 3 positions on
or off or flashing).
Can also be used to help the pizza delivery man find
your house or guests if you are expecting company.
Easy installation in less than 10 minutes (no electrical
experience needed). After cutting off the power to
the light at the circuit breaker you simply remove
the switch cover plate
untwist the two wires
that connect the old
switch and twist the
two wires together to
connect the new switch.
Turn the power back on
and you are done.
PLEASE NOTICE:
Pool Hours are Dawn to Dusk
Swipe cards are required to gain access to
pool through the gate. Please follow all pool
rules as per the Community’s Rules and

early string music. Presently, there are four viol
players, a cellist, and a recorder player.
The instruments will be described and the group will
play six pieces from the Renaissance by the following
composers: William Byrd (c. 1540 or 1543 to 1623);
Alfonso Ferrabosco the elder (1543 to 1588);
Thomas Tomkins (1572 to 1656); Thomas Bateson (c.
1570 to 1630); Michael East (c. 1580 to 1648); and
Orlando Gibbons (1583 to 1625).
This will be an informal gathering and it will start
at 3:15pm on Sunday, October 20, 2013. Doors will

Did you know...
September is Healthy Aging Month?
5 tips for Re-Inventing Yourself During
Healthy Aging Month:
1. TAKE A VOLUNTEER VACATION. Visit New
Places, Connect, and Give Back. Many travelers
today are opting out of the self-indulgent vacation
and opting in for the chance to “give back” through
a volunteer vacation. These trips are a great way
to try something new, fulfill a dream, or experiment
living in a different place, for a short or longer time
commitment. Volunteer Vacations Across America,
(http://www.immersiontraveler.com/) is a good
resource.
2. DANCE LIKE THERE’S NO
TOMORROW. Older adults getting
regular physical exercise are 60%
less likely to get dementia. Exercise
increases oxygen to the brain and
releases a protein that strengthens
cells and neurons. Dance involves
all of the above plus the cerebral
activity present in learning and
memory.
3. HIT THE ROAD. Travel is one of the top picks
when people are asked what they would do if they
had more time. Sometimes the money factor makes
that dream fall apart. Here are several travel sites
for finding good fares and rates: SmarterTravel.com,
Travelocity.com, Expedia.com, Priceline.com, Kayak.
com and Jetsetter.com
4. FOLLOW YOUR PASSION. Try a new sport or
pick up on one you left behind in your early days.
What about surfing, hiking or skiing? It’s never too
late and there are many locations offering courses,
trips, and lessons.
5. EAT FRESH. Make a commitment to add more
fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. September
is still harvest time in many areas so seek out local
farmers markets and buy local produce. Make it a
point to try to make foods from scratch… skip the
processed foods as much as you can. How much do
you need to eat? Check this easy calculator to find
out how many fruits and vegetables you need each
day, based on your daily calories needs. Details:
