The Literary Horse Exhibit DI
The Month of May
From Achilles receiving his immortal
chargers to Don Quixote’s farewell to
Rocinante, literature is full of memorable
stories and poetry about heroic horses and
horse-people. This exhibit brings those
legends to life by pairing photos of today’s
novice through Olympic horses and horsepeople with quotations from the world’s
great books. Join us in connecting with
our rural roots and celebrating the horse
in literature. Sponsored by Dr. Sam Daniels,
Orthodontist
The War of 1812 and Michigan: Some DI
Thoughts on a Faintly Remembered
Conflict presented by Brian Dunnigan
Tuesday, May 8 at 7:00 pm
This year is the first year of
the bicentennial of the War
of 1812, one of America’s
“forgotten wars”, eclipsed
by much larger events.
Brian Dunnigan will
discuss the influence of
the war on Michigan and
how some of that influence is
still felt today, two centuries later.

Sixteen Summer Days: General Custer DI
Meets the Wolverines June 28-July 14,
1863, presented by Dave Finney
Tuesday, May 22 at 7:00 pm
On June 29, 1863, twenty-three year old
George Armstrong Custer was promoted
to brigadier general and assigned to
command the Michigan Cavalry Brigade.
These Michiganders were engaged in
constant and severe fighting during the
Gettysburg Campaign. They suffered more
than 500 casualties from the battlefield
at Hanover, PA to the concluding fight at
Falling Waters. Historian, Dave Finney,
will provide insight into the reactions of
the enlisted men and officers towards the

What do you Geek?
I geek how yoga helps me to appreciate each moment.
I also geek being part of how the Howell Carnegie
District Library helps our community to be healthy,
happy and inspired.
Geek the Library is a national public awareness
campaign that introduces the word “geek” as a verb.
Everyone is passionate and knowledgeable about
something—everyone ‘geeks’ something—and public
libraries support them all. The campaign offers a
fun and meaningful way to raise awareness about
how libraries play a vital role in bringing value to
our communities and that libraries need community
support and adequate funding to remain strong.
Finding jobs, starting or building a business, writing
a resume, and applying for unemployment have been
part of the daily work done on the library’s high-speed
computers with the help of trained staff for the last
several years. The traditional library uses for homework
help, fun and inspirational reading, early literacy
success and the search for personal knowledge for
people of all ages also happens.
Libraries support personal and economic development.
Friends News
The Friends of the Library accept used books, CD’s and
DVD’s for their book sales. The money earned from
the sales is then given to the library to fund necessary
items and events. We cannot accept donations of VHS
tapes, encyclopedias, magazines, text books, Reader’s
Digest Condensed Books, or
any materials that are
soiled, musty or
had been wet.
Donations will
be accepted
at the service
entrance along the back driveway by
the book and materials drop boxes. Press the buzzer
between 10 am and 4 pm and a staff member will open
the service entrance. Please remember that we do not
unload the books, but will provide a cart or dolly if
necessary to assist you. The dates for the book sales
through June are: May 5 and 19, and June 2 and 16.
Your donations are a great way to recycle and improve
the enjoyment of others!
Libraries can transform individuals and communities.
Yet, while expenses have increased, revenues have
decreased. Library revenues are not based on how
many people use the library. Instead, most library
revenue comes from local property tax allocations
which have been decreasing. While most people have
visited their public library and understand its vital role
in their community, many do not know that libraries
are at risk or that local funding for libraries is heavily
influenced by community support.

supports you.
