table top in 1982 to what the business
has become today.
We bring together a comprehensive
range of quality craft products from
all over the world and provide a
customer service second to none.
Our small team work closely
together to ensure that your orders
are processed, packed and dispatched
as quickly as possible, most arriving at
your door by the next working day.
Many of our customers kindly take
the time to provide us with feedback,
and you will see some of their
comments on pages 2 and 86.
We work hard to keep you informed
by regularly updating the website,
creating blog posts, Tweeting and
posting to Facebook. Our Fact File is
also full of useful information about
the crafts and product range, and the

Tapestry Weaving
Tapestry is weaving as art, the choice
of yarns and the simple techniques
leave you free to design. Weaving
with different materials, such as paper
yarns, fibres and beads will produce
texture on the finished item.
Tapestry
The simple under and over of the
yarns, and the beating down of the
threads creates a tight, robust fabric
for wall hangings and rugs.
Getting Started...
A continuous warp thread is wrapped taut
around a frame. The warp threads are
separated with a cross warp tied as in the
photo below. To make the tapestry, a weft
yarn is woven over and under across the warp
threads and beaten down with a fork or comb
to close any gaps.

Special Yarns
Yarns
Weaving cloth can be made more
exciting by the type of yarn used.
This selection of yarns have been
brought together to provoke the
imagination and fuel a passion for
textiles.
Metallised Yarn
A special yarn in gold or silver finish, made by
3rd generation Japanese craftsmen. The yarn is
made from real metallised silver and is soft and
supple to the hand and specifically designed for
hand weaving Songket fabrics in Malaysia as well
as the high end of the Kimono market in Japan.
Light Reflective Yarn
Coated with reflective material on both sides,
this 1mm wide PVC plastic strip is strong
enough to stitch with and used in both warp
and weft. The yarn can be ironed with a
cool iron but will shrink when a hot iron is
applied. The shrinkage does not affect the
reflective quality and can be used to create
special weaving effects. We recommend
experimentation and testing before starting
your project. The yarn, which presents as
a pale grey reflects to a silver white and is
extremely difficult to photograph.

Water Soluble Monofilament Yarn
8
A 90 denier yarn which shrinks by 40%
when placed in water at 40°C, and dissolves
completely at 70°C. It can be used for Shibori
or to support a low strength warp or weft
yarn, and to stabilise open weaves. The low
temperature for dissolving means that even
fine woven silk will not lose lustre. Complex
textures can be developed by allowing the
yarn to shrink, or two and three dimensional
structures assembled before removing all traces
of the original yarn superstructure.

Unbalanced silk yarns made especially for
creating collapse fabric. They come as a pair,
one S twist and one Z twist, and when they
are woven together, with one as the warp and
the other the weft, they release an energy
which causes the fabric to collapse after being
released from the loom, creating the crepe

Weaving
Weaving Basics
Woven cloth is created by crossing
two sets of yarns perpendicular to
each other. One set of the yarns are
called the warp and the other set,
which crosses over and under, are the
weft. When the row of the weft is
pushed up against the previous row,
a solid woven cloth is created. This
is achieved with a comb on a basic
loom, and with an integrated beater
and reed on larger looms.

Stainless Steel Weaving Reeds
30 dents per 10cm (7.62 dpi)
40 years after decimalisation, our weaving reeds
have finally gone metric.
10cm high
When ordering your reed, check the overall length
of your old reed, including the end caps which add
around 2.5cm to the total length. The reed height
is normally defined by the size of the opening in the
beater. Most looms are flexible in the height of the
reed they can accept, which is defined by the shed
created between the beater and the upper warps.
If you’re not sure about how to measure for your
reed, please give us a call on 01483 565800 as
these cut to order items can not be returned.

Felt Making
Felt Making
Traditional felt is created by agitating
wool fibres, wetted with soapy water,
until they mat together to form a
fabric. The fibres can be laid flat on
a surface or molded around a former
such as a hatshaper.
Felting needles are used to attach
fibres to the surface of felt or to
sculpt dry fibres into 3d shapes. The
barbs along the length of the needle
hook the fibres back on each other
causing them to tangle. All types of
fibres can be felted effectively using
this method.

Dyed Merino Wool Tops
Method for Making Felt Balls
Felt Making
• Mix two teaspoons of washing-up liquid in a
washing up bowl half full of hand hot water.
• Take approximately 50g of wool fibre. Tease
the wool open and fluff it up to a consistent
mix, and shape it into a ball.
• Wet the outside of the ball with the soapy
liquid and roll the ball between the palms
keeping a constant pressure and motion.
• Add further fibres to pack out the shape if
necessary and more soapy water as required.
• When the ball has hardened and the fibres
have adhered to the surface, rinse the ball in
clean water, squeeze out and leave to dry.

Spinning
FREE P&P orders over £95
Spinning
Transforming a fibre into
a yarn using these quality tools
is the first step in producing knitted
or woven garments and furnishings.
Beginners may prefer to invest in
a hand spindle although some will
decide to learn the process using a
spinning wheel.
Merino Wool and Tussah Silk Blend
70% Merino wool and 30% tussah silk, blended
together using 3 colours of wool tops. The
creamy yellow of tussah silk provides a subtle
high light in the complimentary marriage of
the 3 tones used and a luxurious handle. This
exciting, tactile fibre will appeal to spinners,
knitters and felt makers alike.
Getting Started...
• A medium staple fibre such as Shetland
or Suffolk is ideal for beginners. Shorter or
slippery fibres such as cotton or silk sliver can
be left for later.
• Yarn is defined by the direction it has
been spun to create either an s-twist or a
z-twist single yarn. A high twist gives a hard
unyielding yarn whilst a lower twist gives a
more elastic feel.
• The integrity of the yarn is determined by
the amount of twist. When the singles are
plied to make the final yarn, the twist in the
singles is normally balanced out to give a stable
yarn. Learning how to regulate this twist is the
key to a well balanced yarn.
• A singles yarn can be used for weaving,
and strengthening the yarn by plying it with
another singles yarn will ensure it is adequate
for knitting and crochet.

Wool Fibres
• All our fibres have been cleaned and combed
and are ready for use.
• A selection of silk fibres are hand-dyed which
means the colours will vary from batch to batch.
• The dyed Merino Wool Tops are industrially

this does not affect their felting performance.

Polymer Clay
Jewellery Making
Polymer clay is a highly versatile, nontoxic, modelling material that can be
hardened by baking in the home oven.
Jewellery makers can use polymer
clay to good effect, as most brands
produce a translucent clay which can
be used on its own or mixed with
colours to make delicate translucent
pastel shades and faux stones.
Premo Sculpey
A superior polymer clay, ideal for jewellery
making especially Millefiori and caning work.
It is very malleable and holds a sculpted line
well. It is easily blended with other colours
and can be combined with other clays, powders
or pigments for creating different effects. The
translucent colour is the most translucent of
all the polymer clay brands. Once cured, the
clay is strong and durable. It is not brittle the thicker areas are hard and rigid and the
thinner delicate areas ‘flex’ to reduce the risk of
breakage. Oven bake at 130°C.
Getting Started...
First soften the clay with the heat from your
hands. The clay quickly becomes malleable and
is easy to roll and shape. A simple bead can be
rolled in the hands or uniform shaped and sized
beads can be made on a bead rolling machine
Add a hole with a large needle, place on an
oven proof dish and bake in the oven.
General health and safety precautions should be
used. It is essential that the manufacturers heating
instructions are closely followed and that the room
is well ventilated. Hands should be washed after
handling the clay and the same cookware used to
bake the clay should not be used again for food.

Polymer clay can be mixed with other
colours to create subtle blends which can
then be made into canes. Canes can be
as sophisticated as the imagination will
allow, and when thinly sliced can be used to
decorated the surface of a bead.

The pasta machine makes light work of
conditioning and rolling out thin, even sheets
of polymer clay. The smooth running of this
stainless steel machine has been tried and
tested and the 9 thickness settings mean you
can roll sheets between 0.5mm and 3mm. Use
to create complex millefiori canes, condition
the clay and blend colours, make polymer clay
veneers and crackle effects for jewellery. Do
not use for food preparation once it has come in
contact with polymer clay.

Model Making
For larger dolls of 30cm tall or more, it is best
to make just the head, forearms and lower legs
out of polymer clay and create a soft body
from fabric and polyester stuffing. If the head is
more than about 25mm thick, you should use an
armature (internal core or support) to prevent the
clay cracking. This can be a rolled ball of foil or
a ball of baked Sculpey Ultra Light clay.

Screen Printing

Screen Printing
A stencil is placed onto a screen of
fine mesh fabric stretched taut over a
frame. Coloured ink is poured onto
the screen to one side of the stencil
and then dragged across the stencil
using a squeegee.
The ink is pushed through the fine
mesh with a squeegee and transferred
to the fabric or paper beneath and
the areas masked by the stencil
remain untouched.
To make prints with more than
one colour, a new stencil is used
obscuring or revealing areas of the
previously printed material.
The printing process can be repeated
along a length of fabric to create
unique printed material for curtains,
bed linen and clothing.
The screen can also be used to print
logos, text and designs onto T-shirts,
posters, banners, scarves and ties.

Making a Stencil...
A mask is needed to block out areas
of the screen to stop the ink printing
in the areas you define. These masks,
or stencils can be created using a
variety of methods.
Screens
Fine polyester mesh (43T) stretched taut over a
frame. Sizes given are inside measurements.
Screens can also be prepared with
a light sensitive emulsion and a high
contrast image as described below.
Diazo Light Sensitive Masks
An exciting method of screen printing using fine
line drawings and photographic half tone prints.
The resist is prepared by mixing the photo
emulsion and sensitizer which is spread on both
sides of the screen. The screen is allowed to
dry thoroughly away from light and heat and a
high contrast image on acetate sheet is placed
on the screen. A photoflood light source is held
above the screen which exposes the emulsion
to create a detailed stencil.

Printing System
Selectasine Binder SF20
The printing system is economic,
simple and flexible in use. It requires
a binder (there is an acrylic-based,
standard binder for general printing
onto light fabrics and 5 special effect
binders, each fulfilling a specific
function) and a pigment.
1 litre £7.00.............................. SF01
5 litre £29.00.............................. SF05

outstanding fastness and soft finish.
1 litre £19.00 ............................ KP01
5 litre 25 kg £79.75.............................. KP05
£320.00.............................. KP25
Adding water to the solution allows
you to paint or spray onto paper and
board. The dilute solution can still
be used on fabric but must be tested
for wash fastness as the binder will
become less effective.
Concentrated coloured pigments for combining
with binder to make printing inks and paints.
The pigments are supplied in a liquid state as
“pigment in dispersion”, i.e. the pigment is
still a solid, though minute, and has not been
dissolved into the liquid (see left for method for
mixing with binder). Discharge bleaching agent
and the perchlorethylene, used in dry cleaning,
can discolour some pigments. e.g. a red, after
treatment might look “brownish”. The colour
chart shows: * colours fast to dry cleaning in
perchlorethylene, † colours dischargeable using
a discharge agent.
Getting Started...
• Estimate the amount of binder you require.
1kg of binder SF20 will cover approximately a
2.8m square of print area.
• Stir your chosen pigment well before
measuring. The colours are concentrated and
should be used at a rate of up to 50g per kg of
binder. An average of 35g will give full shade
(Luminous colours should be used at a rate of
80-120 g per kg).
• Black TT Pigment is prone to gelling if the
concentration of the pigment is more than 2% (2g
per 100g binder). In order to get a good strong
black, a 5% concentration is generally required.
To prevent gelling, add a salt solution (10g salt to
100ml water) a little at a time.
• Carefully add the pigment to give the
strength of colour required. Do not overload
the binder as surplus will be left on the surface
of the material.
• Fix the print when dry. Heat speeds up and
completes a chemical “cross-linking” reaction.
Generally, fixing can be completed with an iron
at 150°C for 4-5 minutes on the reverse of the
print, depending on the type of fabric and the
amount of pigment used.

Speedball Inks
Inks specifically formulated for screen printing
onto fabric such as cotton, polyester and blends,
linen, rayon, fibreglass, and other synthetic
fabrics. Most of the colours are recommended
for printing on white or light fabrics and are
rated good to excellent for light fastness
(except Orange, which is ‘fair’). Prints are wash
fast and have a soft handle. Heat-set the screen
inks when they are dry, by ironing on the wrong
side for 3 minutes with a hot iron. Wash fabric
inside out at the correct wash temperature.
The Speedball Permanent Acrylic
Screen Printing Inks have been
specifically formulated for use on
paper, wood and cardboard.
The Speedball Inks do not contain
solvents, are non-toxic and nonflammable and safe for industrial,
school, or home usage.
Speedball Acrylic Screen Inks
Permanent inks for use on paper and board
which give a pigmented, matte-finish. The inks
print well on wallpaper, oil-based primed boards
and wood, on vinyl and on primed surfaces and
they should always be pre-tested. They are not
recommended for materials which are to be
laundered. Colours may be intermixed and are
rated ‘Good to Excellent’ for light fastness.

Fibrecrafts Transfer Paints
Printing
The process of transferring images, or
patterning, to leave an impression on
fabric, paper and other materials.
Printing
Pébéo Soleil
Fluid paint colours for all fabric painting and dip
dye techniques plus the surprising process of
heliographic printing. The fabric or paper is first
painted and stencils or masks are placed over
the painting whilst still damp. The paint vanishes
from those areas not exposed to the sun (or
a bright halogen lamp) creating a reversed out
print. Heat set with a hot iron on reverse for 5
minutes to make machine washable at 40°C.
Formulated from disperse dyes, for printing on
synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon and
fabrics containing more than 60% synthetic
fibre. Paint onto non-absorbent paper, allow to
dry and iron on back of paper directly onto
fabric. Use masks such as dried leaves or paper
cut outs so that only part of the paint transfers,
and build up the design with a number of
different colours. Transfers can be used more
than once but give a duller image with each
application. The paints are intermixable,
non-toxic, water based and wash fast, leaving a
soft and flexible handle to the fabric.

Natural Dyes
Natural Dye Stuff
Natural Dyeing
Natural dyes give subtle and varied
results depending on the method
used to extract the colour. Using a
mordant will help to make the colour
‘stick’ and improve colour fastness.
Many plants will yield colour and can
be harvested from the garden and
dried in the airing cupboard. Our
range of dried dye-stuff have been
selected to provide colours across
the spectrum.
Getting Started...
Natural Dye Kit
An ideal starter kit to learn all about dyeing
with natural dyes. Contains all 5 mordants
(alum, iron, chrome, copper and tin), 50g each
of alkanet, elderberries, logwood chips, marigold
and turmeric (may vary slightly), plus 100g pure
wool yarn. Full instructions included.

Materials can be pre-soaked in a mordant
and left damp prior to dyeing or the mordant
can be added to the dye bath while the dye is
being simmered. Mordanting materials before
and after dyeing with natural dyes will add
extra fastness. The quantity of mordant used
will vary depending on the fibre content, the
method used and the desired colour result.
Your mordant sample pack contains sufficient
mordant for a range of dyeing experiments and
includes 250g alum, 50g iron and 10g each of
chrome, copper and tin.

Dyeing
Procion MX Dyes
Procion MX dyes (commonly known
as Fibre Reactive dyes) have been
formulated for use on cellulose fibres
such as cotton, linen and viscose.
They are a cold water dye, making
them suitable for Batik, and set
with soda ash. The addition of salt
helps to disperse the dye particles
so that colour is better absorbed.
Adding a solution of Urea increases
the solubility of the dyes, allowing
a longer reaction time and deeper
colours, most useful when printing.
Fibrecrafts Procion MX Dyes
Cold water dyes for use on natural fibres
such as cotton and silk. 0.5g of dye powder
is required per 100g of dry fabric for pastel
shades, and up to 4.0g dye powder for deep
shades such as navy and black. To dye 100g of
dry fabric, first dissolve the required amount
of dye powder in a little cold water. Combine
with 500ml cold water to make a stock solution
for immediate use, (see below left for further
dyeing instructions).
Procion MX Dye Bath:
• Measure cold water into a bucket (3 litres
per 100g dry weight of fibre), add the dye
stock solution (see product details) and stir.
• Add the clean wetted fabric (wrung out),
ensure fully submerged, and leave to stand for
15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
• Add 40g of common salt for every litre
of water (having first dissolved it in a little
water) gradually over the next 10 minutes (the
salt pushes the dye into the fabric, helping to
create an even, rich colour).
• Add 10g of soda ash for every litre of water
(having first dissolved it in a little hot water)
and leave for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
• Wash and rinse well
Procion MX Dye Painted, Sprayed or Printed:
The dye can be applied to fabric with a paint
brush, dropper or spray bottle. The fabric is
first soaked in a solution of soda ash (5g soda
ash for each litre of warm water). For tie-dye,
first tie the fabric, soak it in the solution and
wring out. Do the same for Batik but allow the
fabric to dry thoroughly so that the wax can be
applied. Add a small amount of Urea to the dye
as it acts as a humectant and keeps the fibres
damp for longer, allowing a greater reaction
time for the dye. Combine dye, Urea and
Manutex (sodium alginate) thickener to make
the dye suitable for printing.

Acid Dyes
Hot water dyes for use on protein fibres
such as wool and silk. 0.25g of dye powder
is required per 100g of dry fabric for pastel
shades, and up to 2.0g dye powder for deep
shades such as navy and black. To dye 100g of
dry fabric, first dissolve the required amount
of dye powder in a little cold water. Combine
with 500ml cold water to make a stock solution
(see left for further dyeing instructions).
Dyeing
Acid dyes are best used for dyeing
protein fibres such as silk, wool,
camel, fur, cashmere and some
synthetics such as nylon. The dyes
themselves are not acidic, the word
acid merely referring to the distilled
vinegar (acetic acid) which is used
to set them. Along with vinegar, the
dyes are set in hot water, with the
heat from steam or in the microwave.
Fibrecrafts Acid Dyes
Other formulations of Acid dye, such
as Discharge Acid Dyes, allow for
experimentation.
Acid Dye Bath:
• The dye bath must be heat proof, of glass,
enamel or stainless steel (do not use cooking
pots). Measure warm water into the dye bath.
The quantity of water is not critical except
that for even results there must be plenty of
room for circulation. A typical ratio is 30 times
as much water as fibre i.e. 3 litres water for
100g dry weight fibre.
• Add 100ml distilled vinegar per 100g fibre
(half the quantity if dyeing synthetics).
• Submerge dampened material in the bath
and soak for 10 minutes. Remove it and
then add the dye stock solution (see product
details) and stir well. Return the material and
gently move around the bath for 10 minutes.
• Heat the bath to hand hot. Remove from
heat and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Stir
and return to heat. Maintain at a simmer
just on boiling for 20 minutes but DO NOT
STIR or allow to boil fast enough to cause
movement (and hence felting if dyeing wool).
• Allow to cool and rinse well.

Safety
It is clear that there are sensible precautions
to be taken when handling dyes and chemicals,
particularly as powders:
• Avoid inhaling dusts as they can produce an
asthma type reaction. Wear a dust mask when
handling fine powders and aerosols on a regular
basis. Use in a well ventilated room.
• Avoid splashing solutions into the eyes,
swallowing the materials or prolonged skin contact.
A simple ‘non-contact’ approach (wear gloves,
goggles and overalls where necessary) plus normal,
good hygiene is sufficient precaution for the
occasional user.
• Keep work areas clean and dust free. Wash
hands and equipment regularly.
• Store in clearly labelled containers well away
from children, pets and foodstuffs. Treat with
the same caution as domestic poisons (e.g. strong
cleaners, bleaches or medicines).
• Dispose of spent solutions containing residues
of the dyes responsibly. Dilute and pour onto
waste land or into the sewage system. They have
no known effect on the environment when used in
the quantities recommended in the literature.
Further Information
Material Safety Data Sheets are prepared by
chemical and dye manufacturers and contain
information and instructions on the chemical and
physical characteristics of a substance. The sheet
includes potential hazards and risks, safe handling
requirements and the actions to be taken in the
event of fire, spill or exposure.

Painting with Dyes
Silk Painting
Steam-fix dyes give superior result
and are made from mixes of Acid
dyes and other soluble dyes. The
dyes colour all the fibre and allow
light to transmit and reflect from the
surface of the silk fibres in the fabric.
Dupont Silk Dyes
Steam-fix liquid acid dyes will colour both silk
and wool. They can be used neat or diluted for
all fabric painting and dyeing techniques and set
in the microwave for Shibori and splodge dyeing
Silk dyes flow easily and readily the
moment the loaded brush makes
contact with the silk. Using a gutta
outliner will contain the colours,
while a primer will help to control
the flow.

Painting Silk Fabric:
• Pin the silk to the frame by placing the
first pin in the centre of the farthest edge and
then in each corner. Pull the silk fabric across
the frame and place pins on the opposite side.
Repeat this on the remaining sides.
• Using an auto fade pen, sketch out your
design. The ink from the auto fade pen
will wash away with the wet paint, or fade
completely within 24 hours. Keep the shapes
simple and bold.
• Go over the outlines of the design with a
gutta outliner. The outliner will sink through
the surface of the fabric to form a barrier,
remember to close all ‘loops’ to stop the paint
from escaping beyond the boundaries.
• Squeeze the tube gently until some of the
outliner starts to come out of the nib and
wipe away any excess. Be confident, it doesn’t
matter if the outliner does not follow the
design exactly. Allow the outliner to dry.
• Paint with light colours first. A second
application will intensify the colour.
• Remove the painting when dry and
heat set the paints with a hot iron as
per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Most of the fabrics supplied by George Weil are
ready for dyeing, although they can pick up grease
and residue during the handling process.
• Before dyeing, painting or printing onto fabric,
it is important to check whether the fabric is
‘Prepared for Dyeing’ (PFD) or requires scouring
to remove any grease, oil or starch. Run a few
droplets of cold water onto the fabric. If they
soak in quickly, no scour is necessary.
• To remove starches, size and oils, add 5mls of
Synthrapol (a non-ionic detergent, see page 76)
along with 2-3 litres of water for each 100g of
material. Stir gently over a 15 min period, and
then rinse thoroughly in warm water.
• Household detergents may leave an alkaline
residue which can affect colour or wash fastness.

Acrylic Paints
Painting
Acrylic, water-based fabric paints
are thicker than silk paints. They are
suitable for a number of surfaces
including cotton, synthetics, paper,
board, wood, polymer clay and
leather, although testing is advised.
The paints are made permanent
on fabric by heat setting them
with an iron or they can be mixed
with Jacquard Airfix which acts as
a catalyst when heat setting is not
practical. We always recommend you
test paints before starting a project.
Jacquard Lumiere Paint
Thick metallic and pearlescent acrylic colours
that do not spread. The paint has excellent
coverage and remains soft and flexible,
stretching with the fabric. It is therefore ideal
for use in dance and theatrical costume design
and sports clothing. Lumiere is suitable for all
fibres including acrylics, cotton, leather, paper,
wood (varnish to seal) and knits. The colours
are also suitable for use as a marbling paint and
are washable or dry cleanable once air dried
for 24 hours and heat set by ironing. Use with
Textile Extender, or dilute with 25% water for
air-brushing or silk painting.
Getting Started...
Textile Colours Exciter Pack
Intense and semi-opaque colours that leave
natural and synthetic materials with a soft
handle once fixed by iron. Dilute with the
colourless extender to obtain lighter shades or
thin with 20% water for airbrushing. Washable
and dry cleanable once heat set by ironing.

Lumiere & Neopaque Exciter Pack
Jacquard Lumiere offers thick metallic and
pearlescent acrylic colours which do not spread.
The high pigmentation provides vibrant colours
and excellent coverage. They are suitable for all
fibres including leather, wood, paper and knits.
Jacquard Neopaque are opaque acrylic fabric
paints for painting on dark coloured fabrics.
Contains 7 Lumiere and 2 Neopaque colours in
14ml bottles. Tips and techniques included.

Synthrapol
Synthrapol is a mild non-ionic, low temperature,
concentrated detergent, useful for a number of
applications. You can prepare fabrics by rinsing
out starches and surface residues before dyeing,
printing or painting, and after use to prevent
back staining by removing colour which has not
combined with the fabric. Rinse the finished item
in a solution of half a teaspoon to 5 litres water.
Make a more concentrated solution when boiling
out batik wax, or use up to 2 tablespoon to 5
litres of cold water when cleaning fleece ready for
spinning. This product does not contain sodium
carbonate which contributes to colours fading, and
is often found in domestic detergents.

Silk Paper Making
Silk paper making or silk fusion is
a papier-mâché type technique for
creating textured paper/fabric or 3d
objects using silk fibres combined
with an adhesive medium.
Silk Paper Making
Getting Started...
• Protect surfaces with plastic sheeting.
• Spread the fibres in 2-3 thin layers,
perpendicular to each other, between two
sheets of nylon mesh netting.
• Dampen thoroughly with Silk Paper
Medium or with a solution of CMC paste (add
CMC powder to a measure of very hot water
and stir until dissolved, top up with cold water,
stir well and allow to cool).
• Work the medium into the fibres with a
sponge, ensuring the fibre is thoroughly wetted
and remove the excess with a clean, dry
sponge.
• Peel away the top sheet of netting or leave
in place for a more textured paper.
• Place on a cooling tray to dry and then
carefully peel off the back sheet of netting to
reveal the handmade silk paper.
Silk Chubbies
A 50g selection of hand-dyed silk fibres in warm
colours, including reds through to yellow, and
cool colours including greens though to blues
and violet. The undyed chubbie contains a
similar mix of fibres in their natural state. Use
for sample spinning, silk paper making, or needle
felting. Contents will vary.

Paper Making
A handmade paper can be created in
a number of ways...
Paper Making
Getting Started...
• A sturdy food blender is helpful for making
the pulp. Do not use the blender for preparing
food once it has been used for this process.
• Recycled paper is only as good as the paper
it is made from. Choose a good quality, acid
free paper or use Calcium Carbonate to help
promote an alkaline pulp.
• Plant fibres, such as grass or onion skins,
can be chopped up and boiled in a solution
of soda ash until the lignin is separated from
the cellulose fibre. Lignin is the substance
that binds the cells and fibres together in the
plant and will ultimately rot paper if it is not
removed. The remaining cellulose fibre can be
chopped smaller in a blender to make a pulp.
• Combined the pulp with coloured pigments,
fillers and other fibres for texture and colour.

Add to pulp at anytime during the process, to
make paper less absorbent so that ink or paint
does not run or feather. It improves paper
stiffness and helps protects the fibre from oily
media as well as dirt and pollution. This alkyl
ketene dimer emulsion has a neutral pH and
meets archival standards. Essential if you are to
use your paper for screen printing or artwork.
Use 4% by weight of dry pulp or 2% of wet pulp.
