2015-16 Fall, Winter and Spring Brochure
Registration Information and Policies
You may register online at www.yorkparksandrec.org using a credit
card. Each program session is considered a new class. All individuals
must register for all sessions they wish to participate in. Please
remember that you are not automatically registered into additional
sessions until your registration is complete, including payment.
Online Registration Helpful Hints:
When you are registering your child for a program and online
registration will not allow you to select your child’s name because
their grade is either “Too High” or “Too Low”, try this:
• Click on “Account” in the upper left hand corner
• Click on the “Edit” button next to your child’s name
• Select their current grade from the drop down menu
• Click “Save”. This should solve the problem when you try to
register them again (Unfortunately our online registration program
does not automatically roll over grades each year).
If you forgot your Parks and Recreation account password please
do not create a new account. Instead:
• Click on the “Login” button in the upper left hand corner
• Click on the “Forgot Password” link
• Enter your email address and a new password will be emailed to
you (Please note that you may change your password once you are
logged in by clicking on “Account”)
Can’t find the program you are looking for?
• Visit www.yorkparksandrec.org and select the “Programs” tab at
the top of the page
• Rather than selecting the “Youth”, “Adult” or “Senior” links,
please scroll down a little further and click on the following link:
https://secure.rec1.com/ME/york-parks-recreation/reg.php
• Type in the program or keyword that you are looking for and click
the “Search Filter” button. This should bring up all programs that
pertain to your search.
Still having problems with online registration? If so, please call the office
during normal business hours and we would be happy to assist you!
You may register by mail or by phone with a credit card anytime.
We accept all major credit cards with the exception of American
Express. You can also come into the office and make a payment for
the activity by check, cash or credit card.
To register yourself or your child through the mail for a program,
you must use the registration form provided. Please fully complete
the participant and responsible party information. Indicate the
programs you wish to register for and include your check made
payable to York Parks and Recreation for the total amount due.
Refund Policy
We will notify you if the class has been filled, canceled, or changed.
The York Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to
cancel or consolidate any program that does not meet minimum
registration numbers. No refunds will be given after the activity
begins. Complete (100%) refunds will be given if the Parks and
Recreation Department cancels/changes the program.
If you need to cancel a program, you must notify us no less than one week
prior to the first class. After this time, you may receive a full refund if a
replacement can be found (wait list has priority), the withdrawal does not
affect course minimum enrollment, or there is an unlimited enrollment.
We do not give refunds after the start of the program.
We would like all program participants to be advised that the York
School Department has priority over all school facilities. This, on
occasion, may cause recreation programs to be canceled. We will
make every effort to avoid this, however, should it occur, we will
do our best to notify program participants in advance. All canceled
programs will be rescheduled if possible.
Non-residents are subject to an adjustment of fees.
All persons participating in Parks and Recreation Department
sponsored programs and activities do so at their own risk and without
recourse to the Town of York, its agents, officers or employees.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Along with our website and bi-annual brochure, we send many flyers
with updated information and new programs through the schools,
throughout the year. Please check the schools websites along with
our website to keep in touch with the latest new offerings through
Parks and Recreation. You will find a link on the homepage of the York
Schools. We also publish a monthly newsletter and have a Facebook
page where we often post information, cancellations, and pictures.
If you have any fun recreation photos or recreation news that you
would like to have included, please contact Ryan Avery at reavery@
yorkmaine.org or Robin Cogger at [email protected]
Pictures
We randomly choose pictures of adults and children who participate in our
programs to be printed in our publications, Facebook page, or sent out to area
papers. Please notify us if you do not wish to have your picture published.
If you have any suggestions for new programs, please give us a call. We’re
always on the lookout for new and exciting programs to offer the community!

Mount Agamenticus Conservation Program
Mount Agamenticus is a natural treasure and an
invaluable resource for wildlife, water, and recreation! The three hilled area is home to vernal
pool species, rare plants and animals and is the
heart of five watersheds that provide drinking
water for southern York County residents. It is also
a recreational destination point for over 40,000 area residents and
regional visitors annually. It boasts scenic vistas, large unfragmented forests, biological richness, and miles of maintained trails.
State, local and non-profit landowners work together to protect
this land and to manage recreational opportunities while conserving wildlife habitat and water quality within the region. These
landowners make up the Mount Agamenticus Steering Committee
and include: the Towns of York and South Berwick, The York Water
District, Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Great Works
Regional Land Trust, York Land Trust, and The Nature Conservancy.
Together, these partners strive to maintain safe, responsible, and
enjoyable public access to Mount A’s trail system without compromising the integrity of the area’s ecologically significant habitat.
Thanks to the collaborative conservation efforts of our partners,
crew, volunteers and donors, Mount A has become a wonderful
place for the local community to enjoy the outdoors, experience its
scenic beauty, and to appreciate its significance as one of Maine’s
Last Great Places.
Experience Mount A thru Work & Play!
StoryWalkTM - Year-round
The StoryWalkTM program combines the benefits of physical
activity, time outdoors in nature, literacy and family time by taking
children’s books and posting them, in pieces, along a recreational
path or hiking trail. Discover this fall’s NEW feature: “When the
Wind Stops”, by Charlotte Zolotow and illustrated by Stefano Vitale.
Then be sure to check back for a new winter feature: “The Snowy
Day”, by Anna Milbourne and illustrated by Elena Temporin. To
find the beginning, start at the base parking area and then follow
the pages along the western side of the Ring Trail to Witch Hazel
Trail and finish near the summit.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
Together, many hands make light work!
Adopt - A-Trail - Year-round
This program is an all-volunteer effort that provides community
members and trail users with an opportunity to become involved
in conserving and maintaining the many miles of multiple use
trails threaded throughout the Mount Agamenticus Conservation
Region. Volunteers can help by “adopting” a favorite trail and
take responsibility for its upkeep. Adopters assist the Conservation
Crew by monitoring, maintaining and enhancing trails and trailhead
facilities. Once trained, volunteers work at their own pace and on
their own schedule with a minimum requirement of two trail working days a year.

The Kids’ Corner at
Mount Agamenticus Learning Lodge
A Free, Drop-In Program for Families Featuring Guided, NatureInspired Crafts
Plus A New Kids’ Summit Camp for 2016
Our Kids’ Corner program inspires kids to explore and look more
closely at Nature while spending time with their parents in an
environment that encourages connection with nature in the
wild forest of the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Area. Each
weekend we present fun natural science topics created especially
for kids that gives them and their families an opportunity to create
an inspired and related craft.
In the 2015 summer season we made big brown bats after the CFW’s
“Brownie” the bat ambassador visited. We made wood pendants
while exploring xylem & phloem and made a cacophonous “human
tree” with parents and kids alike. We tried sumac tea and met the
“laughing trees” at the summit. Our topics on dog poop and water
pollution ignited rousing, sometimes wet fun.
Please join us this fall to make hooty owls, GORP, hawks, dream
catchers and more. Delve into
basic sciences in a fun way
with your younger children, or
more in-depth with your older
ones. We gear our activities
toward the participant
regardless of age. It’s for the
young and young at heart and
requires some degree of parent participation for younger kids. Our
weekend program will close for the winter along with the Learning
Lodge on October 11, 2015 and re-open again in Spring 2016.
Please watch for announcements regarding the 2016 programs
on the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Area website: www.
agamenticus.org, our FaceBook page: Mount Agamenticus
Conservation Area, and updates from York Parks & Recreation. In
2016 will we be offering a kids’ Summit Camp. From participating
as a citizen scientist, to hiking & backpacking, birding and sensory
awareness -- we’ll offer related projects, games, special hikes,
arts & crafts, introduce guest educators and 2, 4, 6, and 8-legged
ambassadors. SEE YOU AT THE SUMMIT!

Wednesday, November 18th
November is a month many of us associate not only with
Thanksgiving but also the assassination of one our great all
time Presidents, John F. Kennedy. To honor his memory and his
great accomplishments, we will be visiting The John F. Kennedy
Presidential Library and Museum. During this solemn time, the
Library has special exhibits which we will have access to. The
library and museum sits on a ten-acre waterfront park overlooking
Boston and the Harbor Islands. The Kennedy Presidential Library
is one of thirteen Presidential Libraries in the United States, but
the only Presidential Library in New England. The Museum walks
visitors through President Kennedy’s thousand days in office and
brings to light the hope, dreams, accomplishments, and memories
of a President who remains highly popular today. At Presidential
Libraries, history lives beyond the pages of a textbook or the walls
of a classroom.
It offers a wide array of engaging exhibits for visitors to immerse
themselves into the early 1960’s as well as the Presidency of
John F. Kennedy. The past meets the present for all generations
to experience. Upon our arrival we will be welcomed with an
orientation of the library. We will then begin our tour with a 20
minute film covering his early life up to the 1960 Democratic
Convention where he received the Democratic nomination for
President. After the film you will start the journey through th
campaign, on to the Inaugural Address, then onto the White House
years. After the tour we will enjoy a box lunch (Choices TBA) in the
café and you will have time to visit the Museum gift shop.
After at 1:30pm we will visit the NEW Edward M. Kennedy
Institute. The institute was dedicated by President Barack Obama
on March 30, 2015 with Vice President Joseph Biden in attendance
prior to its opening to the public on March 31, 2015. The Edward
M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is a non-profit
educational institution founded in 2009 and named after Senator
Edward M. Kennedy, who first envisioned it in 2003. The institute’s
mission will be to educate the general public, students, teachers,
new senators, and Senate staff about the role and importance of
the United States Senate. In 2009, Peter Meade was named to
lead the Institute.[2] In 2014, former University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth Chancellor Jean MacCormack was named interim
president. Upon our arrival we will have an overview of the
institute and attend 2 live programs. These programs are designed
to allow you see what it would like to be an actual Senator in

Nordic Walking
Pilates
Burn more calories, improve balance & stability after joint
replacement – 4 week program
With the Holidays right around the corner, wouldn’t it be nice
to burn extra calories and reduce stress while enjoying a smart
physical outdoor activity with maximum health benefits? Nordic
Walking is easy to learn and best of all it combines fun and
convenience. Nordic Walking is like fitness walking with specialized
walking poles. Our starter clinic is perfect for all ages and abilities
so now is the perfect time to discover what Finland fitness buffs
have known for years… Nordic Walking burns up to 40% more
calories, increases upper body strength, improves balance, and
reduces stress on your hips, knees and spine. The first of four
starter clinics will meet on Long Sands Beach in front of the bath
house and will begin with information on the history of Nordic
Walking, pole fitting, and then we will head out on our first Nordic
Walk. Subsequent classes will meet at various local spots so we
can explore and enjoy the best walking spots right here in our own
town. Poles will be provided by and returned to the instructor.
Lauren DeLong is the owner of York Nordic and a certified Nordic
Walking instructor. Lauren’s passion for Nordic Walking began
when her mother had hip replacement surgery and the surgeon
recommended Nordic Walking as a way for her mother to maintain
balance while strengthening her hip during recovery. She teaches
Nordic Walking around Southern Maine from Kittery to Saco and
throughout New England. She has designed and manufactured
her own poles which will be provided for use during the clinic.
www.YorkNordic.com is a great resource on the history of Nordic
Walking, the scientific research behind the benefits, as well as
helpful tips on proper form. She is excited to share her passion for
this sport with others.

Pickleball – INDOOR - MONDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS
Kittery Community Center
What is the fastest growing sport in the country right now? You
guessed it… PICKLEBALL! Pickleball is a racquet sport in which
two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite
materials to hit a perforated polymer ball over a net. The sport
shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout
of a Badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis, with
a few modifications. Pickleball was invented in the mid-1960s as
a children’s backyard pastime but has quickly become popular
among adults as a fun game for players of all skill levels. Currently,
the sport of pickleball is exploding in popularity. The number
of places to play has nearly doubled since 2010. There are now
well over 2,000 locations on the USAPA’s Places to Play map. The
spread of the sport is attributed to its popularity within community
centers, PE classes, YMCA facilities and retirement communities.
The sport continues to grow worldwide as well with many new
international clubs forming and national governing bodies now
established in Canada and India.
We were excited to bring Pickleball to York this summer and are
equally enthusiastic about collaborating with Kittery Recreation for
Indoor Fall/Winter Pickleball! If you haven’t tried it, you should, it’s
a lot of fun. Pickleball can be played by all level of players at the
same time, so you should not feel intimidated if you are a beginner.
Each session will be facilitated by recreation staff and equipment
is available for your use, however those who have become hooked
have preferred purchasing their own paddles.

work, repetition and coaching that focuses on ball handling, shooting,
defense, footwork and many other essential elements of the game.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
Before you make the decision to tryout, please consider
the following:
Unlike our Saturday basketball program, the travel teams consist
of just 2 girls teams made up of 12 players maximum, and 2 boys’
teams made up of 12 players maximum, therefore, please be aware
that there will be cuts made. Be sure to talk to your child about this
before the tryouts in order to avoid disappointment.
You must make all tryouts in order to be considered for the team.
In the event that there are extenuating circumstances that we
should know about, communication with our office must be made
prior to the first try-out date.

Many programs are adversely affected due to participants
waiting until the last minute to register. There is a point when a
program must be cancelled or modified if there are insufficient
registrations. All programs require a high level of coordination
which includes facility scheduling, staffing, volunteer recruitment
and the purchasing of supplies. You will notice many of our
programs have registration deadlines. If there is room after a
deadline, late registrations will be accepted with a late fee and if
it is a youth program your child may not be guaranteed a t-shirt,
hat, ball, etc. We appreciate your cooperation.

Apres Basketball Season 3rd and 4th graders
Annual Christmas Travel Basketball Tournament
3rd and 4th grade travel teams are developing across Southern
Maine and we thought this should be addressed in our community.
The towns that are developing these programs often do not offer a
recreational basketball program for their youth, so their alternative
is to offer travel teams for the children that are interested. Because
we offer a quality youth basketball program to all the children in
York, we will not offer a travel team for this age group, as we have
a large number of children participating in our program, and do
not agree philosophically with cutting children at this young age. It
could potentially water down the recreation program to the point
that it would adversely affect the existing program, leaving many
children with no alternative for play.
Grades 5 & 6 and 7 & 8
The York Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the
Annual Christmas Basketball Tournament to be held during
Christmas Vacation week. This tournament is open to boys and girls
in grades 5 & 6 and 7 & 8. This is a double elimination tournament
and the number of teams is limited. Teams must register early.
Awards will be issued to the top two teams in each division.

With that said, many coaches and parents pick up a team at the
end of the season and play in the Charlie Brown Tourney as well
as other tourneys in the area and we will support this effort to
obtain practice time in the gyms at the end of our season. We
think this is the right option for the kids, but we certainly welcome
all feedback. Please contact Robin Cogger with any questions or
concerns.
Mud Season Basketball 5th – 8th Grade Boys and Girls
This six week program is for students grades 5-8 that are looking
to improve their game of basketball through individual evaluations
and player oriented goals. Are you looking for some help and/or
direction for your game? Are you looking to renew your confidence
and skill preparation? Are you looking to identify goals? This
developmental program is for you. The program will be geared
toward individual and team concepts. Fridays and Saturdays will
focus on skill prep, including but not limited to, shooting, position
specific skills, defense, rebounding, boxing out, ball handling and
footwork. Sundays will be the day you can put all of your hard
work to the test by playing games that will reinforce the learned
skills. The program will run three days a week for an hour each
session and will be limited to 12 participants per hour. We’ll add
as many hours as needed to accommodate all those interested in

Flag Football League
Ages 7 & 8 and Ages 9 & 10
Considered by many as the skills version of American football, Flag
Football is a version of American football that is popular across
the U.S. The basic rules of the game are similar to those of the
professional game, but instead of tackling players to the ground,
the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball
carrier (“de-flagging”) to end a down. Players wear a belt with flags
around the waist. The only contact is above the waist blocking at the
line of scrimmage. Like touch football, flag football was designed
in an effort to minimize injuries that playing tackle football could
bring. Our emphasis is on fun and friendly competition, as well as an
opportunity for kids to practice the “skill” portions of the game.
Depending upon numbers, we will look to create balanced Flag Football
teams, which compete each week. Fun, fitness and skill development
are the themes. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly, as is the
play. Each week will begin with 15-20 minutes of warm-ups and skill
development followed by game play. Dynamic stretching focuses on
“limbering” the body during athletic movements. It is an effective
means of preparing the body for athletic play.

Our program for grades K - 2 is designed to teach the basics of
lacrosse to beginners and to provide a great learning experience
while developing each individual player to his fullest potential in a

emphasized) component of youth lacrosse. This program enhances
and encourages lacrosse-specific skills and teaches players how to
implement those skills in game situations.

We will be offering a third and fourth grade program on Saturday
mornings at the Bog Road Fields. Second graders with some
lacrosse experience, and at the discretion of the program director,
are welcome at this level. Beginner second graders should plan to

• Boys will need a helmet, arm and shoulder pads, athletic
supporter, stick, gloves and mouth guard.

such as throwing, catching, cradling and shooting along with the
rules of the game. This league will be mostly instructional with time

Lacrosse For grades 5 - 8
Boys and girls at this level will have their own teams. The league
will once again focus on skill development, throwing, catching
cradling and shooting. Games will be scheduled with surrounding
area towns, so be prepared to travel.
This program requires a major commitment of time. A typical week will
include at least 2 -3 practices and a 10 – 12 game season. We strongly
recommend that you choose just one activity during this spring season
as all practices for lacrosse are mandatory in order to play in the games.
This program will not be limited this year, however, it is still necessary to
register before the deadline date. With that in mind, volunteer coaches
and assistants are needed. No experience is necessary, as we will be
offering a coaches training clinic to teach new volunteers the basics of
the game. Please consider volunteering your time….Give us a call!
• Boys will need to bring a helmet, arm and shoulder pads, athletic
supporter, stick, gloves and mouth guard.
• Girls will need goggles, mouth guards, gloves and a stick.
Shirts, balls and goalie equipment will be provided for all levels of play.

Healthy Hometowns Cross Country Ski Rental
Program – Don’t Miss out!!!
For Children Ages 5 – 8th Grade
Many people choose to live in Maine for the healthy, safe lifestyle
we’re able to enjoy here. Contrary to the image of our state,
however, Maine is ranked at, or near the top of the nation for the
incidence of childhood obesity, childhood type II diabetes, childhood
smoking and asthma. Alcohol and drug use among middle school
and high school populations have reached alarming levels as well. If
we are to make a difference in the lives of Maine’s children, we must
commit to the hard work of being there for them on a daily basis,
identify the barriers they face in living healthy lives and address each
of them in sustainable, practical and effective ways.
Through the Healthy Hometowns Ski Program, Maine Winter
Sports Center is already making a difference in the lives of
thousands of Maine children.
Now for the Nuts and Bolts of this unbelievable opportunity: With
the help of the Healthy Hometown ski program and the Maine
Winter Sports Center, you can rent cross country boots, skis and
poles for the season. On Thursday, December 3rd at the Grant
House we will have a sizing night for all those people interested in
renting equipment. The Equipment will then become available for

Grades 1 – 4
We have once again partnered with the Agamenticus Ski Club to
make this opportunity available. This program will be a fun , 10-week
long ( Tuesdays only) youth cross country ski program for children in
grades 1-4. The focus will be on creating a fun learning atmosphere
through on & off-snow games that teach children the basics of classic
and skate skiing, balance development through play, movement on
skis, and a sense of accomplishment & appreciation of a lifelong
sport of Nordic Skiing. We provide an opportunity for children to
learn the benefits of long-term commitment, outdoor preparedness,
and a solid love of the outdoors!
This year’s Head Coach will be Scott Doughty. Scott is the CoFounder of the Agamenticus Ski Club and a former USA Biathlon
Team Skier as well as a UNH Ski Team Member. Scott will be
assisted by Amy Fullerton, Sarah McLaughlin and Jana Doughty. All
ASC coaches have a very supportive and positive attitude and love
to share their passion of skiing with children.

Rental equipment is available through the Maine Healthy Hometown

rental program is the best way of getting your children started with
minimal out-of-pocket purchases and on the RIGHT equipment for
maximum enjoyment. Rental equipment does NOT have “fish scales”
on the bottom - so children are unimpeded in the learning process and
are free to glide and kick properly. Renting is the way to go!
Please note that the Rental Program is separate from the Nordic Ski
Program and requires additional fees and registration. Please see
information listed above.

This program is designed to introduce and improve (for returning
skiers) children in grades 5th - 8th (U12-U14 classes) to train and
try nordic ski racing. The program focuses on developing and
improving ski technique, general on-ski skills and continuation/
development of classic & skate skiing. Skiers can also look forward
to an occasional “backcountry ski” and optional weekend day ski
trips at significantly discounted rates.
Skiers are highly encouraged to compete in MPA Sanctioned Maine
Middle School sanctioned races (age appropriate distances) and

and sign-up early). The rental program is the best way of getting your
children started with minimal out-of-pocket purchases and on the RIGHT
equipment for maximum enjoyment. Rental equipment does NOT have
“fish scales” on the bottom - so children are unimpeded in the learning
process and are free to glide and kick properly. Renting is the way to go!

Hammerhead Wrestling Program
Hammerhead Wrestling Systems seeks to provide instruction in all
areas of amateur folk style & freestyle wrestling, to prepare athletes
for success in the sport of wrestling. This is to be achieved through a
proprietary instructional and belt-level system. Much like the martial
arts, Hammerhead Wrestling recognizes and ranks skill attainment
and progression with award belts similar to those made popular in
MMA and the UFC. Open to wrestlers Grades 1 - 12; this program
is being held in conjunction with the York Parks and Recreation
Department. Each session is open to all area wrestlers regardless of
town of residence. Take advantage of our NEW Full Year Options which
includes all sessions for Youth and Middle School/High School Divisions
(see pricing and dates below). Check out www.hammerheadwrestling.

for more information. Much like the martial arts, Hammerhead
Wrestling Systems seeks to recognize and rank skill attainment and
progression with award belts. Fashioned after championship belts
made popular in MMA and the UFC, the proprietary belt system
and instructional program focuses on instruction in all areas of
amateur folk style & freestyle wrestling, to prepare athletes for
success in the sport.
The ultimate objectives of the Hammerhead system are:
•To provide guided early instruction in a non-competitive
environment.
•To build leadership, academic, responsibility, and self-discipline
attitudes.
•To continue mastery of folk style/freestyle technique through the
encouragement of competition and leadership in later stages of
the system.
•To ensure the enjoyment of the sport of wrestling into high school
and beyond.
Please don’t hesitate to volunteer to coach! You don’t have to be in
the coaches’ hall of fame to help coach any of our leagues. In every
situation, the parks and recreation department provides leadership
on the field or on the court, with a program director who runs the
league and refs the games. Your job, in most situations, is to make
sure every child has equal playing time and to insure that the kids
are having fun…so please think about it. Our programs are only as
good as the volunteers who help us. Thank you!
