site and facility inventory
The City of DeSoto has a broad collection of park, special-use and
trail facilities to meet the recreational needs of the citizens. Currently, the City has developed 430 acres into 20 park, trails and
recreational facilities. In addition to the developed park and trail
sites, the City has 61 acres of City-owned property that could be developed into park facilities. The location of each of the existing park,
special-use and trail facilities is located on the Existing Parkland and
Trails Map included in the Appendix (Map A.1).
Parks
The Neighborhood Park Map, (Map A.2) found in the appendix,
shows existing parks and the areas they serve. It also highlights
under-served areas as well as future park service zones. This helps
visualize areas in need of park and recreation space so that they can
be prioritized. Site inventory is also important to identify the existing parks and facilities in need of improvements.
The following Table 4.1 identifies each park, trail, and recreational
site and the recreational amenities provided at each site. Table 4.2
identifies each undeveloped City-owned parcel along with a description of each site and its potential for park development.
The City also offers recreational facilities at DeSoto Independent
School District sites. Likewise, the Cantebury Private School and 5
different Homeowner Associations provide their own recreational
facilities in DeSoto for everyone to use. Table 4.3 identifies each
school district, private school and HOA recreation site and the recreational amenities offered at each location.

Trails
Trails play an important role in a parks, recreation, and open-space
system. They are a vital component in providing connectivity whether
it is linking one park to another, or linking a whole city to another city.
They serve both recreation and transportation purposes at a local and
regional level.
The Trail Network Map, (Map A.3), found in the appendix, shows existing and future trails. It highlights where trails, sidewalks, and park
trails exist, then shows where future trails can help improve access and
connectivity to parks, schools, recreational facilities, and even other
cities.
2011 Parks, Recreation , Open-Space & Trails Master Plan
Trails can come in many different types and may appear on the map
as a bicycle or pedestrian route. As far as usage, they can generally be
categorized as the following types:
• Separated Trails – Separate trails and trail systems are
provided for each type of user; for example bicyclist, pedestrian, skaters, etc.
• Shared Trails – Trails are shared by two or more user
groups but design parameters restrict the use of the trail by
some groups
• Multi-use Trails – All user groups occupy the same trail or
trail corridor.
No matter the type, the design of any trail should be modified accordingly to accommodate the expected user groups.
The following things should be considered when continuing the development of DeSoto’s trail system:
Location - Determine at least one route for all-season use. Take
drainage and erosion issues into consideration when locating potential trails.
Access Points - Whether it is a trail-head, parking area, or recreational facility, it is important to be mindful of desired access
points to trails. This ultimately helps improve usage and access for
safety purposes.
Signage - Adequate signage for direction and education of it users is always a necessity. Trail marking and signage is currently in
development for the existing Roy Orr Trail, but is something that
should always be considered as new trails are developed.
Connectivity - Pin-pointing areas that would benefit from trail linkages will improve connectivity throughout the city. Parks, schools,
and other recreational facilities should be a priority in providing
linkages and connections of trails, sidewalk, and other pathways.
As you will see in the site inventory, DeSoto has several popular
trails that provide a great system to build upon. From this inventory and other considerations, trail improvements and recommendations are outlined in the action plan.
Summary
Accompanying the previously referenced inventory tables is a summary sheet for each developed and undeveloped park, trail, and
special-use site in the City. These summary sheets contain photographs of each site, an aerial view of the site, an inventory of the
amenities available at each site and a detailed description of each
of the sites and improvements. Included as a part of many of the
summary sheet descriptions are suggestions of improvements that
could improve the quality of the park or trail site.

BEARSON ROAD PARK
INVENTORY
 Undeveloped
 6 Acres
DESCRIPTION
Bearson Road Park is an undeveloped park site adjacent to Veloweb Trail. The site is relatively flat
and is dominated by a number of
well-established Cedar trees. The
site is bound by a wooded fence
row along the west and south
side of the park and tree cover
along a drainage swale on the
east side of the park. The park
acreage lends itself for future development as a neighborhood
park although the park is cut off
from the neighborhoods to the
west by Elerson Rd. Direct pedestrian access, which is a traditional
component of a neighborhood
park, is able to be achieved from
the neighborhoods to the east by
way of the Veloweb Trail.

BRIARWOOD NORTH PARK
INVENTORY
 Undeveloped
 8 Acres
DESCRIPTION
Briarwood Park North is a heavily wooded, undeveloped park
site along a drainage way in the
southwest corner of the City. The
park site is an extension of the
existing Briarwood Park south of
Belt Line Rd. The park site is surrounded by residential development and is a prime candidate
for neighborhood park amenities,
such as a playground, pavilion,
picnic stations, and a pedestrian
trail. A scarcity of flat ground will
restrict the opportunity to provide
open-space, free-play areas. The
park has direct access to the Veloweb Trail and could serve as a
trail head for this trail.

BRIARWOOD PARK
INVENTORY
 13 Acres
 2 Playgrounds
 Concrete Trail (0.8 Miles)
 Pavilion/Shelter
 Fitness Stations
 Parking
 Neighborhood Access
 Picnic Tables/Benches
DESCRIPTION
Briarwood Park is a neighborhood park constructed by the
developer of the surrounding
subdivision. Primarily a passive
park, Briarwood was developed
along a creek with a landscaped pond cut into a rock
hillside and is home to a flock of
friendly ducks. An attractive pavilion overlooks the duck pond,
and a winding concrete trail
along the creek connects two
playgrounds on the south end
of the park to the pond at the
north end of the park. A small
off-street parking area is located
near the pavilion.

CARROLL STADIUM
INVENTORY
 5 Acres
 Lighted Football Field
 Bleachers
 C o n c e s s i o n / R e s t r o o m
Building
 Locker Rooms
DESCRIPTION
Carroll Stadium is a joint-use facility which the City intends to take
control. The stadium consists of
a lighted football field with raised
bleachers and a press box on
the north side of the field. There
are separate buildings for storage, restrooms and concessions,
and locker rooms. The structures
and the stands are in desperate
need of repair or removal and replacement. The location of the
stadium immediately east of the
Senior Center provides a unique
opportunity to convert this site to
a football or soccer field with a surrounding walking track for seniors
and a location for outdoor senior
activities.

DESOTO RANCH PARK
INVENTORY
 Undeveloped
 22 Acres
DESCRIPTION
DeSoto Ranch Park is a heavily wooded park site in a largely
undeveloped area of DeSoto.
The park site is located along a
major tributary of the Ten Mile
Creek. The character of the
site with the heavy tree cover,
the creek, and two lakes lend
this site to more natural passive
park development. The adjacency of the park site to the
existing neighborhoods and
the lack of neighborhood park
facilities in this part of town
will necessitate that a portion
of this site be developed as a
neighborhood park. Anticipated improvements for this park
could include a playground,
pavilion, picnic areas, perimeter trail, outdoor classroom for
the nearby elementary school
and enhancement of the natural aspect of this park. The park
could also be a component of
the eastern link between the
Roy Orr Trail and the Veloweb
Trail.

INVENTORY
 10 Acres
 Playground
 Restroom
 4 Pavilions/Shelters
 Parking
 Picnic Tables with Barbeque
Grills
 Benches
 Trail Access to Roy Orr Trail
DESCRIPTION
Ernie Roberts Park is a multi-function park which serves as a trail
head in the center of the Roy
Orr Trail by providing parking, a
restroom, and drinking fountain.
The park also provides a railroadthemed playground consistent
with a neighborhood park, although it’s not directly accessible
by any neighborhoods. The park
also includes four rental pavilions
that are popular sites for birthday
parties and family reunions.

GRIMES PARK
INVENTORY
 75 Acres
 9 Baseball/Game Fields
 2 Baseball/Practice Fields
 9 Soccer Fields
 3 Restrooms
 3 Concession Buildings
 Parking
 Playground with Covered Pavilion
 Picnic Tables
 Covered BMX Park
DESCRIPTION
Grimes Park is a regional park that is heavily programmed with sports activities.
The park is divided into three specific use zones: a covered BMX park, a baseball complex, and a soccer complex. The BMX park is a public-private operation operated by an outside concessionaire. The baseball complex consists of
nine fields of varying sizes and two practice fields. One of the fields is a premier
field with raised covered bleachers. In addition to the game fields, two restroom/
concession buildings serve the complex. Two of the challenges associated with
the Grimes Park baseball complex are inadequate parking and a lack of storage
space. The soccer complex is separated from the baseball complex by a creek
and is divided into two zones with a total of nine fields. A restroom/concession
building is located in the southern zone; however an additional restroom/concession building is needed in the northern zone. Adjacent to the soccer complex is a
playground and picnic area located along the creek.

KIVA PARK
INVENTORY
 10 Acres
 Playground
 Pavilion/Shelter
 Parking
 Neighborhood Access
DESCRIPTION
Kiva Park is a spectacular park
nestled in an abandoned rock
quarry with exposed rock outcroppings encircling the entire
park. This park is a true neighborhood park in that it is completely
surrounded by residential housing. The park can be accessed
from the Kiva Trail, which runs
through the neighborhood in an
overhead utility easement. Park
improvements include an attractive gazebo, a covered playground, and a small off-street
parking area. One area of concern are the drainage problems
that stem from multiple storm
drain outlets which discharge
into the park.
34
2011 Parks, Recreation , Open-Space & Trails Master Plan
KIVA TRAIL
INVENTORY
 West Trail – 0.25 Miles
 East Trail – 0.59 Miles
DESCRIPTION
The Kiva Trail consists of two
trail sections in the Ten Mile
Creek Estates neighborhoods
that connect the neighborhood to Kiva Park. The trail
is located within an Oncor
Easement. The trail terminates at a brick wall on the
west end, which eliminates
any connectivity to Cockrell
Hill Road. An opening in the
wall is recommended which
would allow the trail to be
connected to the new sidewalk system being constructed along Cockrell Hill Road.

MANTLEBROOK PARK
INVENTORY
 8.2 Acres
 Undeveloped
DESCRIPTION
The Mantlebrook Park site is located adjacent to the Roy Orr
Trail in the Mantlebrook neighborhood. The proposed park
site is completely open and is
surrounded on three sides by
residential development. This
park site would be suitable for
neighborhood park development that include such amenities as a loop trail, playground,
pavilion, and open-space for
unorganized play. This park site
will also provide direct access
to the Roy Orr Trail.

MEADOWBROOK PARK
INVENTORY
 15.6 Acres
 Undeveloped
DESCRIPTION
The Meadowbrook Park site is
located adjacent to the Roy
Orr Trail in the Meadowbrook
neighborhood. The proposed
park site is open with scattered
tree cover primarily along the
Roy Orr Trail. The park site has
direct access to Hampton Blvd.
Portions of the park site are located within the 100-year flood
plain. This park site would be
suitable for neighborhood park
development including amenities, such as a loop trail, playground and pavilion. Because
of the open nature of the park
site, there is ample room for
development of practice ball
fields. This park site will also provide direct access to the Roy
Orr Trail.

MEADOWCREEK PARK
INVENTORY
 102 Acres
 3 Football/Game Fields
 1 Football/Practice Fields
 Restroom
 Concession Building
 Parking
DESCRIPTION
Meadowcreek Park is a regional
athletic complex designated for
football. There is a premier field
which is used by the school district, 2 more game fields, and a
practice field. Support facilities
for the football fields include a
concrete parking lot, a restroom/
concession building, and raised
bleachers on the 3 game fields, all
of which are lighted. During large
events, the parking area is insufficient and an adjacent open area
must be utilized for overflow parking. Currently, the park site is only
30% developed.

MOSELEY PARK
INVENTORY
 19 Acres
 3 Softball/Game Fields
 Basketball Goal
 Volleyball Court
 Playground
 2 Restrooms
 2 Concession Buildings
 3 Pavilions/Shelter
 Swimming Pool
 Parking
 Neighborhood Access
 Batting cages
DESCRIPTION
Moseley Park is a community park with a wide array of improvements. The park is
packed with active recreation improvements, including a girls’ softball complex,
a family aquatic center, a playground, a basketball court, and a sand volleyball
court. The girls softball complex includes 3 fields, a restroom/concession building,
and two shade pavilions. Originally developed as adult softball fields, the fields are
now designated for girls softball, which only utilizes a portion of the outfield. These
outfield areas need to be programmed for something else. There are drainage
issues associated with the fields and the storage buildings at the complex are in
disrepair and need to be removed and replaced. The aquatic center has been
updated recently. Adjacent to the aquatic center is a fenced grassy area with
a sand volleyball court that is currently not used and could be reprogrammed for
better utilization. The playground is adjacent to a parking lot and should be relocated to a more adequate site. The basketball court is heavily used and would
benefit from additional courts (possibly located in the fenced open-space near the
aquatic center). Paved trail access to the surrounding neighborhood is provided.

NORTH ELERSON ROAD PARK
INVENTORY
 6 Acres
 Playground
 Restroom
 Covered Picnic Tables
 Benches
 990 Linear Feet of Trail
DESCRIPTION
North Elerson Road Park was constructed by the developers of the
adjacent Wal-Mart as an amenity
associated with the development.
The park functions as a neighborhood park but is cut off from the
adjacent neighborhood by Elerson
Road. Park improvements include
a covered playground, several
covered seating areas, a loop trail,
and a restroom building. The park
area is only 50% developed, which
provides opportunities for future
development. The current park
site would benefit from site grading
improvements and modification of
the loop trail to provide more unobstructed usable open-space for
free play.

ROBIN MEADOW PARK
INVENTORY
 0.5 Acres
 Undeveloped
DESCRIPTION
The Robin Meadow Park site is a
small undeveloped parcel of land
that is owned by the City, that
has the potential to be converted to a neighborhood park. The
park site is located within the 100
year floodplain and is surrounded
by residential development. The
fairly open site with trees along
the back side of the property is
large enough to accommodate
a playground, pavilion, and picnic tables. There is not enough
room for a parking lot, which will
encourage park patrons to walk
to the site.

ROY ORR TRAIL
INVENTORY
 105 Acres
 3.6 Miles
 Trail heads at:
o Town Center
o Ernie Roberts Park
o Murphy Hills Park
DESCRIPTION
Roy Orr Trail is the main
component of the DeSoto trail
system. This 3.6 mile, 8’ wide
concrete trail travels along
Ten Mile Creek through the
central part of the city. The
trail connects neighborhoods
to the Town Center, Murphy
Hills Park, and Ernie Roberts Park. Future plans include
extending the trail east to Lancaster and west to Cedar Hill.
There are several parcels of property along the Roy Orr Trail
that can be developed into neighborhood parks. These
parcels include one 7-acre site at Mantlebrook Drive, a 15acre site at the end of Greenbrook Drive, and an 1/2-acre
site off of the trail spur at Clear Springs Drive.

SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER
INVENTORY
 Computer Room
 Fitness Room
 Card Room
 Craft Room
 Library/Pool Room
 Banquet Hall
 Offices
DESCRIPTION
The Senior Activity Center was
developed in 2006 to provide a
center for active seniors to recreate. This recently renovated
building provides space for a
broad range of activities and
events. Based on staff evaluation of space utilization, there is a
need to enlarge some areas that
are not adequately sized and
shift the function of certain areas
that do not work in their current
space. The staff would also like
to explore the possibility of providing outdoor activities to better utilize the property that surrounds the Senior Activity Center.

SILVER CREEK MEADOWS TRAIL
INVENTORY
 0.22 Miles
DESCRIPTION
The Silver Creek Meadows Trail
was constructed by the developer of the Silver Creek Meadows
subdivision. The 8’ wide concrete
trail follows along a tributary of
Ten Mile Creek. Future expansion
of the trail will connect the neighborhood to the sidewalk system
along Westmoreland Road. One
area of concern is erosion along
the creek. This erosion has placed
sections of the trail in jeopardy of
being undermined.

SUMMIT PARK TRAIL
INVENTORY
 0.36 Miles
DESCRIPTION
The Summit Park Trail was
constructed by the developer of the Summit
Park subdivision. The 8’
wide concrete trail follows
along a tributary of Ten
Mile Creek. The trail connects the neighborhood to
Young Elementary School.
Future expansion of the trail
will extend the trail west of
the current location. One
area of concern is erosion
along the creek. This erosion has placed sections of
the trail in jeopardy of being undermined.

TOWN CENTER, RECREATION CENTER, CORNER THEATRE &
AMPHITHEATER
INVENTORY
 2 Gymnasiums
 Indoor Walking and Jogging Trail
 3 Racquetball Courts
 Weight Room/Fitness Area
 Teen Room
 3 Multi-Purpose Rooms
 Outdoor Amphitheater
 Roy Orr Trail Access
 Corner Theater
DESCRIPTION
The Town Center development includes
multiple recreation facilities, including the
Recreation Center, Corner Theater, and
the outdoor amphitheater. The Recreation
Center was developed from an old supermarket and is heavily used by a broad mix of users
from basketball players, weight and fitness users, dancers, walkers, and joggers. There are a
number of drawbacks with the current design, including multiple access points which create an
access control problem; the weight and fitness area is undersized; access to the second-level
jogging trail conflicts with use of the basketball courts; under utilized racquetball courts and
access to the restrooms are a problems for patrons of the Corner Theater. The recreation center
has been heavily utilized over the years and is in need of updating. Adjacent to the recreation
center is the Corner Theater. This 160-seat theater was developed in 1996 and provides a home
for community and professional theater productions. The outdoor amphitheater is located
behind the Town Center on the banks of Ten Mile Creek, looking out over the Roy Orr Trail. The
amphitheater was renovated and received a new shade structure in 2010.

TOWNSEND PARK
INVENTORY
 15 Acres
 1 Baseball/Practice Field
 8 Soccer/Practice Fields
 Playground
 Parking
 Neighborhood Access
DESCRIPTION
Townsend Park is a rather unique
neighborhood park. The park
provides traditional neighborhood park amenities, such as
a playground and a practice
field; however, the large openspace of the park has been programmed for 8 soccer practice
fields and parking – features
which are not typically associated with neighborhood parks.
There is an opportunity within this
park to create a loop trail, and
the wooded area at the northern portion of the park would be
a perfect site for a pavilion and
picnic facilities.

VELOWEB TRAIL
INVENTORY
 1.51 Miles Built
 2.64 Miles Proposed
DESCRIPTION
The Veloweb Trail is located
within an overhead utility
easement in the southern
portion of DeSoto. This trail
is a major component of the
North Central Texas Council
of
Governments
master
trail plan for the Dallas/Fort
Worth area. Sections of the
8’-wide, concrete trail have
been constructed; however,
because of the spotty
development, there is not a
continuous trail of any length
and, therefore, sees very little
use. Future trail plans will
connect this trail to the Roy
Orr Trail, providing a loop trail
network within the city.
