GUIDE
Welcome to
DELAWARE COUNTY!
I would like to welcome you to the
2015 edition of the Delaware County
Tourism Visitors Guide. It is my hope
that this guide provides you an inviting taste of the attractions and events
that are available in our county.
The Maquoketa River and Lake Delhi
area provide not only breathtaking
beauty, but also a myriad of recreational opportunities. From a natural heritage standpoint, Delaware
County is a striking combination of hills, valleys,
prairies, river, streams, farm and timberland. The
same qualities that attracted Native Americans to this
area provide a rich “natural architecture” for those
who visit and live here today.

MAIN STREET
BY SARA MILLHOUSE

The transformation of the Franklin Street Brewery building, in
some ways, is symbolic of a change being repeated today on Main
Streets across America. As some necessity retailers move out or close
down, niche and specialty businesses are breathing new life into
bustling streets.
After serving as a hardware store for the majority of its life so far,
116 South Franklin Street has gained a new purpose as the Franklin
Street Brewery. It’s upstairs continues to serve as a Masonic Lodge.

Of course, some would argue that beer is as much a “necessity” as
hardware or groceries (which have also been sold in the building).
After all, when the building was built in 1875 (a second story was
added on four years later), many towns had their own local brews,
and large-scale breweries were regional rather than international.
The craft beer trend can be seen as a reaction against uniform
flavors, and it has “tapped into” local and regional pride. The most
local of its new practitioners has now refurbished a storefront in the
already bustling and proud Manchester business district.
Brothers Kyle and Chad Sands have homebrewed for more than 10
years, slowly perfecting their recipes. When they decided to pursue
their dream of turning their passion into a full-time business, they
had a harder time finding a location than they expected. There simply weren’t any open buildings in their hometown downtown, and
they were determined to stay in Manchester.
As it turned out, the location they found is ideal. It’s just across the
street from the future Manchester White Water Park: who wouldn’t
want a cold beverage after rafting?
The news of the brewery has created quite the carbonation around
town, with many residents expressing their excitement over the new
business.
With the help of family and friends, the brothers completely gutted
and refurbished the building, converting it from two to one storefronts. “We weren’t sure what we were going to find under there,”
Chad said of the gutting process.
What they found were beautiful brick walls, which they blasted
with corncobs to clean the soot of an over-100-year-old fire.
Beautiful wooden beams now featured prominently in the refurbished bar area. The effect, with the brick walls and soft lighting, is
one of cozy warmth, though the seating area is quite large.
The Sands took out the front half of the wall that had once divided
the storefronts, putting in column supports instead. Part of that wall
found new life in the unique brick bar that welcomes visitors to
sample the brewery’s Devil’s Backbone, Dan’s White Chocolate Stout,
Milepost and other beers.
The back includes the brewing area, with the tanks visible
behind the bar. Brews include the Burrington Brown, River Runner,
Manchester Red, Devil’s Backbone and the Left Turn Only reserves.
The brewery is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-10
p.m., Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from noon to
midnight and Sundays from 1-7 p.m.

Manchester’s White Water
Park makes a splash
Whitewater in Iowa? You betcha!
Iowa’s third and largest whitewater park will be completed this
spring. Kayakers, stand-up paddlers and canoeists will soon be able
to surf, playboat and run six new rapids right through downtown
Manchester on the Maquoketa River in Northeast Iowa. Get ready to
get wet this year in Iowa!
A 110-year-old dam has been removed, allowing the Maquoketa
River to flow unobstructed through the community again, reconnecting aquatic life and improving fish habitat. “Manchester is the third
city in Iowa to remove a low-head dam, enabling the community
to engineer and create a whitewater park. It will join Charles City
and Elkader in making Northeast Iowa a paddler’s destination,” said
Hannah Childs, a member of the local committee who has been
instrumental in the creation of this whitewater destination.
The 900-foot park features six waves and pools catering to whitewater boaters and stand-up paddle boarders, as well as recreational kayaks, canoes and tubers. Terraced rock banks along the river offer plenty
of viewing areas and increased access to the new recreational area.
For optimal boating, the White Water Park features are designed
to provide peak recreational opportunities at a flow of 400 cfs on the
Maquoketa River gauge at Manchester. All freestyle playboating moves
and stand-up paddleboard surfing are anticipated to be available.
A local community improvement initiative, Manchester’s Good to
Great Committee, started looking into options to improve the entire
river landscape in response to a series of comments regarding the river
that came out of public meetings.
As it turned out, there were already area individuals interested
in making river improvements, and they already had ideas for the
Maquoketa River. Childs said they were just looking for an opportunity to suggest an idea that would “kick start” a new role for the river.
The Maquoketa River has always played an important role in
Manchester as early settlers utilized the power of the river in the mid1800s by building a woolen mill and a grist (flour) mill. Around the

turn of the century these were replaced with
electrical generation dams, which provided
electricity until the 1960s. Since that time, the
Manchester Dam and the Quaker Mill Dam
north of Manchester have not been in use.
Replacing the Manchester Dam with
a whitewater park has brought many elements of the community together. The city,
Delaware County, and Manchester’s Good to
Great Committee—along with many volunteers—banded together to make this dream
a reality. Crews have been working all winter
on the whitewater park with plans to have it
open and ready for this summer.
The “on land” portion of the improvements to the Howard and Helen Shelly Park,
named after the lead donor and adjacent to
the Whitewater Park, will be phased in over
several years. The improvements will include
public restrooms, parking, donor recognition,
attractive seating and viewing areas. The riverbank improvements will create areas where
anglers can access the aquatic habitats created
by the whitewater features and become a great
place for picnickers, photographers, spectators
and anyone who just wants to be near the
river.
In addition to the entertainment aspect of
the whitewater park, it will draw people into
the vibrant downtown area, which features
a variety of restaurants, bars, a local brewery
and specialty shops, and serve as an economic
engine for all involved.
Future plans to remove the Quaker Mill
Dam above Manchester will also serve to further enhance fish and aquatic habitat on the
Maquoketa River and aid in the development
of a river trail from Backbone State Park to the
whitewater park.

Lake Delhi is scheduled to refilled this
autumn. The target date to be refilled is Oct.
23, with a hefty incentive to contractors in
hopes to move that date even earlier.
In 2010, a devastating flood breached
the dam that created the lake, causing
extensive damage to homes and properties
and temporarily returning the Maquoketa
River to its natural, narrower course. For
years, people have known the lake as a wide
meandering playground, established in the
1920s with the construction of the Hartwick
Dam to provide hydroelectric power. In the
interim, the wide lakebed has been vacant,
with docks and homes located well back
from the river.
The multi-million-dollar project to re-fill
the lake has brought together state, county,
local and donated funds, and its reconstruction has not been without controversy.
But for those who live along the lake and
its many visitors—including families who
have come to the lake for generations—its
imminent return signifies a return to a
way of life defined by the water, by boating, swimming, leisure and good company.
Through the years, lodging, eateries, camping and more have become available along
the lakeside.
The movie “We Will Be Back—the Lake
Delhi Story” captured not only the drama
of the disaster but the fond memories of

Local businesses catering to visitors are

In the heart of Delaware County, hidden
away on the south side of Manchester at the
end of South Wayne Street, the Sherman‘s
Pumpkin Farm and Corn Maze emerges every
fall.
Looking forward to their 35th year in business, Dean and Jackie Sherman’s story started
with a simple plan to grow some type of
produce on their three tillable acres. Having
been raised on farms, both Dean and Jackie
had experienced the importance of working
together as a family, and both had a desire
to share this experience with their three
children.
In the fall of 1978 they purchased an acreage from Dean’s great-uncle Faye and Edith
Ashline and, after remodeling the home, the
couple tried several projects: first planting
1,000 Christmas trees; then growing and selling sweet corn with plans to grow and sell
general produce. The idea of growing pumpkins came after visiting the Novak Pumpkin
Farm in Cedar Rapids, where Mr. and Mrs.
Novak were kind enough to share their experiences with having the family involved in all
aspects of their business. And so their venture
began.
The first few years, the pumpkins and
squash were planted and hoed by hand. Then
the Shermans bought a two-row bottom plow
at a sale and decided to rebuild Dean’s father’s
old Minneapolis Moline tractor. Using the

base of an old camper as a trailer, they picked
and harvested their produce by hand, selling
it in their front yard with price signs in each
row and collecting payments via an honor
box system attached to their front porch.
“Everyone always wants to know if the
honor box really works,” said Jackie. “We
always say, “Well, we would come home
from work, open up the box and there would
be money inside.’ Manchester is a wonderful community where people are basically
honest. People would surprise us by leaving
IOUs with their name on a slip of paper or
stopping Dean on his mail route to pay him
because they did not have enough money for
their purchase.” The honor box is still available today at the check out area for customers
wanting to use it.
Over time, the Shermans rented additional land wherever they could find it and
often grew pumpkins in multiple locations.
“Sometimes, we felt like the Pied Piper when
we would haul pumpkins through town,”
said Dean with a smile. In 2008, they were
able to purchase an additional 22 acres adjacent to their home site, which made things
much easier. They now have their 22 acres
split into three sections to allow for rotation
of their pumpkin and squash crops. It is critical to use good seed, and rotate the land in
order to maintain insect and disease control,
according to the Shermans.
In 2004, the couple visited a corn maze and
started researching how to design and lay out
one of their own. Their first three-acre maze

design was of a large pumpkin, and it is still
their favorite. “We actually drew the design
on grid paper, placed a painted stake every
15 feet to form a grid, and then marked the
design with a hoe to create our design.” Now
13 years later, they have learned a lot more
about maze design. In January and February,
Dean and Jackie start to design the next fall’s
maze, with each design being an original.
Their 2015 corn maze idea has been drawn up
by Eli, their 8-year-old grandson. It is still in
the final drawing process, but be ready—it’s
sure to be fun and challenging come this fall.
Laying out the maze is quite an elaborate
and tedious process. The corn, planted a
bit later than normal, is planted in two different directions, thus making it more difficult to move and see as it makes the rows
disappear. Next, the final design is scanned
into a computer and with the use of CAD
(computer-aided drafting) design, anywhere
from 500–800 location points will be determined. With the use of GPS, the design is
then placed in the field using numbered
flags. The Shermans share that without the
help of engineer friends, Dave Gibbs and the
Burrington Group engineering firm, the process for an elaborate design would be almost
impossible. After the flags are in place, the
Shermans handhoe the corn stalks, creating
the walking path design of the corn maze.
“We try to keep the theme of our corn
maze child-friendly. We want it to be a family
adventure, so we strive for a simple, achievable maze incorporating stations to find with
the use of a map,” say Dean and Jackie. “So
far we haven’t lost anyone in the corn maze,
but we do put our cell phone number on the
map for anyone who might get lost,” laughs
Jackie.
A flashlight corn maze (customers must
bring their own flashlights) is held on
Saturday nights in October. Each Sunday in
October, a non-profit group (Girl Scouts, 4-H
groups, youth groups) provide a reasonably
priced lunch in one of the enclosed buildings on the property, allowing the non-profit
group to earn some additional money and for
some to attain points for volunteering their
time by doing face painting, etc.
The Pumpkin Farm is featured as a “little
bit of country” within Manchester. There
is no admission fee to the Pumpkin Farm,
although there is a fee to go through the corn
maze. The goal is to entertain visitors, both
young and old. The farm includes many fall
photo opportunities including tire swings;
a large wooden train; a large shoe (sized for
children to enter); a slide surrounded by hay
bales; hayrides; leaf piles for jumping; and
three very friendly scarecrows, Gus, Herb,
and Fred (who stands on his head).
In addition, the last Sunday in October, the
Shermans host a “Trunk, Trick or Treat” from
2–4 p.m. for families to bring their costumed
children in to trick or treat from car to car.
This year there were over 18 businesses and
individuals that decorated their trunks, bringing laughter and joy to over 300 children.
In return, participating families are asked to
donate a non-perishable food item for the
Delaware County Food Pantry. A total of 200
pounds of food and over $50 was donated
in 2014.
“It’s become part of our lifestyle,” says
Dean. “It gives Jackie and me a chance to work
together, and our children and their families
are a wonderful asset as they come home on
weekends to help with the corn maze and
harvesting. We are so blessed to be active in
our community through other aspects of our
lives, but in the fall, we are given the pleasure
of seeing old and new friends; seeing parents
and grandparents come with their children
to make family memories and give our grandchildren an opportunity to learn a good work
ethic and the people skills that they cannot
learn in a classroom.”
Sherman Pumpkin Farm and Corn Maze,
open Aug. 30 through Oct. 31, 2015, is located
at 413 South Wayne Street in Manchester, Iowa.
