2013 Report of A ppreciation Letter from Brad Baca Interim President, Western State Colorado University Any institute of higher learning can fill heads. Dear Alumni and Friends, Only the best fill hearts. They’re special places that attract special people. In our case, it’s seekers of knowledge and thrills. Born leaders and square pegs. The nicest rebels you’ll ever meet. Pursuing higher learning surrounded by a landscape that’s more vertical than horizontal; more wild than tamed. And when they’ve achieved all they can here, they do the same out in the world. Not content to just make a living, they make their mark. And in time, discover the place where they learned and lived, now lives in them. Carved into their very beings as surely as Gunnison was carved out of the Rockies. That kind of education is too powerful to keep to yourself. Alums, supporters, faculty—all members of Western Nation— aren’t obligated to tell others; they’re compelled. They want to shout from the mountaintops…about the mountaintops, secure in the knowledge that it’s not bragging if it’s true. And it is. There’s no university experience like this anywhere. In my more than eleven years here at Western, I can’t think of a time I’ve been more proud to show a prospective student what our University has to offer. And the source of that pride is not just the new or improved physical features and facilities that grace our campus, but also the updated technology, new equipment and expanded academic offerings. From one end of campus to the other, in every department, Western has never shined more brightly. And the world is taking notice. We’ve earned a well-deserved spot on U.S. News and World Report’s college rankings. And in its annual list of America’s top colleges, Forbes has ranked Western one of the best 100 in the West. We’re an Outside Magazine Top 25 College, an ESPN Top 10 College for Skiers, and a Mountain Bike Action Magazine Top 10 College for Mountain Bikers. I don’t mention these things to boast (well, maybe a little), but to make a point: We’re only as good as those who support us. And thanks to you, we’re great. Your support is helping change the lives of students who’ll change the world. And making Western’s extraordinary learning environment even more remarkable. And while, in the hyper-competitive world of higher education, there’s always more to do, the purpose of this document is to acknowledge what’s been done. To recognizing those who helped us do it. And to say thank you to everyone who answered the call to step up… Western Up…and give back. Never has been. Never will be. So when it comes time to support a place this special Sincerely, in word, deed, or donation… ...Step up. Speak up. Western up. Brad Baca Interim President Western State Colorado University 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 1 Letter from Art Harter Letter from Tom Burggraf President, Western State Foundation Executive Director, Western State Foundation Dear Western Friends, Dear Friends, This year has been filled with excitement, challenges and great accomplishments. Western, now operating as a University, has brought on great changes to its physical appearance and academic growth. Western Up is love that lifts up. The Foundation Board of Directors continues to diligently focus on our Mission Statement: “To provide financial leadership and support of the Western State Colorado University vision, while offering an ever-improving and remarkable learning environment.” The culmination of the Foundation’s passion, talents, enthusiasm and loyalty to Western has produced a focused campaign to set and reach ever-increasing high goals. These innovative goals will continue to increase and expand the great learning environment that Western has been and insure it will always be! The most loved things always get lifted up. When we were kids, the adults who loved us would sweep us up into our arms, high above what we could otherwise see, and place us on a perch we could not otherwise reach. They loved and lifted us. When we grew, we made deep friendships. We saw in these friends -- qualities and potentials that even they did not see. We lifted their eyes and faces, so they could see themselves in the same light we saw them. We loved and lifted them. We went off to work. And rather than simply trade our time for money, we wanted to succeed by raising the company, its people and those we serve in real and good ways. When we did that, we loved and lifted. Two words epitomize this rising direction—Western Up! Gratefully, Art Harter (‘78) President, Western State Foundation For many of us, it has now come full circle. Our parents are much older and needing our care to meet their most basic needs, the way they cared for us when we were very young. And we do so with joy and dignity, loving and lifting them as they once did for us. Love lifts. That’s the stuff of a beautiful and meaningful life. And for you who know that Western and its people have loved and lifted you, you are doing the same for Western. Loving and lifting. It looks different for each gift: a scholarship for a student who otherwise could not afford college; a University Center that is a home away from home; a sport that lets them know they belong and are strong; an academic program that ignites their passion to change the world. It’s all loving and lifting. That’s what you’ve done by giving. That’s the stuff of a beautiful and meaningful life. That’s the stuff of a powerful and life-changing University. That’s what Western Up is all about. And why I am so grateful for you. Thank you. Warmly, Thomas F. Burggraf, Jr. Executive Director, Western State Foundation 2 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 3 A new rallying cry for a new era. University Center This past year, Western earned a welldeserved spot on U.S. News and World Report’s college rankings. It doesn’t take much. A simple walk around the campus just might provide all the input a visitor needs to discover what Western Nation already knows: there’s a new spirit here. In its annual list of America’s top colleges, Forbes ranked Western as one of the best 100 colleges in the West. Washington Monthly Magazine named Western a top national liberal arts college. Given Western’s long history of innovation and excellence, though, re-newed might be a better way to describe it, especially considering what a groundbreaking idea it was in the first place to choose the Gunnison Valley as ground zero for the adventure in higher education that would become Western State Colorado University. Luckily, the spirit that inspired the founders of the first college carved out of Colorado’s western slope was more than matched by the faculty, staff and students who followed in their wake then and follow in it still today. For more than a century, Western has championed uncommon excellence–a fact reflected not only in the quality of its academics, but also in the success of its graduates. Western was on Business Insider’s 2013 List of Smartest Colleges (based on SAT scores). In 2013, Western was named a G.I. Jobs’ Top Military-Friendly School. And Western is an Outside Magazine Top 25 College for Outside Readers, an ESPN Top 10 College for Skiers, and a Mountain Bike Action Magazine Top 10 College for Mountain Bikers. Now, Western’s robust history, recent successes and renewed spirit have inspired a new rallying cry that slowly but surely is making its way through Western Nation: Western Up! It’s a “high five” back through time to the educational pioneers who helped make Western possible. It’s a declaration of pride for students, faculty, alumni and supporters. Preceded by a #, it’s a way to connect comments, posts and photos from Western’s online community. And for the Western State Colorado University Foundation, it’s a call to action to support Western in word, deed and donation. The University Center provides services and facilities that support Western’s education programming and special events hosted by the campus community and visiting groups and organizations. In addition, the University Center provides a hub for students to gather and socialize. It includes a movie theater, dining, big screen TV’s, a games area with pool tables and foosball, a fire pit, and more. This state-of-the-art facility aspires to enhance campus life by providing services, amenities and opportunities for community development, multicultural experiences, personal growth and achieving skills vital to the development of engaged citizens and future leaders. We’re happy to report that in fiscal year 2012-13, Western Nation more than answered the call. With your help, the Foundation raised more than $4.4 million last year; and, in the past four years, the Foundation has averaged a $3,662,448 distribution to the University. From Biology to Business, Chemistry to Communication Arts, the evidence and outcome of that support can be experienced and seen in every department on campus. But here are a few of the more noteworthy accomplishments Foundation support helped make possible: And the world is taking notice. 4 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 5 Professional Land and Resource Management Program One of only nine programs in North America, and the only one of its kind in the Rockies, Western’s Professional Land and Resource Management (PLRM) Program features an intense, hands-on curriculum that trains students to have successful careers in energy exploration and development. The PLRM Program’s comprehensive curriculum provides graduates with a strong business administration education supplemented by specialized courses related to the land management field, including geographic information systems, law, water and environmental issues, natural resource economics, and petroleum geology. Borick Business Building One of the most impressive and beautifully-designed facilities on campus, the Borick Business Building is home to Western’s Business, Accounting and Economics Department. Developed with direct cooperation of a variety of industry leaders, and accredited by the American Association of Professional Landmen, the PLRM Program’s goal is to graduate the most prepared land professionals in the country. Borick has the distinction of being the first major building at a college or university in Colorado built and equipped entirely through private funds—including a generous $3 million donation from Steven Borick (’75) and family. The Borick Business Building is the first LEED-certified building on campus and within the Gunnison Valley. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Environmental features include the re-use of roof tiles on the building taken from the renovation of other buildings on campus, motion lighting and an energy-efficient ventilation system. The track record of success experienced by those who’ve graduated from the program indicate that goal is more than being met. Recreation Center and Field House Funded through a student-approved facility fee, and on track for a Spring 2014 opening, the Western State Colorado University Recreation Center and Field House will be a welcome addition to Western’s sports programs, students and campus life, in general. The new Recreation Center and Field House will provide 120,000 square feet of sports- and athletics-related facilities and equipment, including an NCAA track, three basketball courts, three volleyball courts, three group fitness rooms, an in-ground trampoline and foam pit, a 5,300-square-foot Weight Room, a 40-plus-foot climbing wall with over 3,000 square feet of climbing space, a 5,800-square-foot Fitness Center, and a new High-Altitude Performance Lab and Wellness Center. Mountain Sports Team Program Created with the help of a substantial annual commitment from Michael O. Johnson (’77) and his wife, Mari, and lead gifts from Steve Borick (‘75), the Mountain Sports Team Program continues to make great strides. Gunnison’s spectacular mountain setting provides the perfect “playing field” for this unique collection of Club Sports. The Mountain Sports Team Program provides both male and female student athletes the opportunity to compete at the intercollegiate level in a number of mountain sports. Led by Dave Wiens (’90), Mountain Bike Hall of Famer and six-time winner of the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race, participating sports include Mountain Biking (Cross Country and Downhill), Big Mountain Free-Ride Skiing and Snowboarding, Nordic Skiing, Climbing, Trail Running and more. 6 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 7 Celebration of Giving Banquet Scholarship donors and recipients break bread, share stories, give thanks. “Considering the strong bonds established at this event, it’s more than appropriate the meal is served family style,” said Tom Burggraf, Foundation Executive Director. Appropriate, as well, that Western’s Celebration of Giving Banquet takes place around Thanksgiving, as each year the event gives scholarship recipients the opportunity to thank the donors of those scholarships face to face. Spotlight: R alph “Butch” Clark III Supporting the environment by investing in those who’ll protect it. When the Environment and Sustainability (ENVS) Program at Western needed support, Ralph E. Clark, Jr. was there with a $100,000 donation. The fund now named in his honor is used to help create ENVS classes, develop the program, and promote environmental education. Now, about 10 years later, Ralph “Butch” Clark III (‘73) is following in his father’s footsteps with a $100,000 gift of his own. The donation will be used to support Western’s new Master in Environmental Management (MEM) Program, funding five Clark Environmental Fellowships per year for four years. The unique and growing MEM Program offers two areas of concentration: Integrative Land Management and Sustainable and Resilient Communities. One important advantage of the program is the ecological diversity and natural resource wealth the Gunnison Valley has to offer. And once again, that’s where Butch Clark’s willingness to step up—and Western Up—comes into play. 8 The size of the event, in and of itself, is testament to the growth and importance of the assistance Western students receive from alumni and supporters. What began as a small luncheon years ago now has grown to a major banquet with close to 200 in attendance. For years, a tract of land owned by Butch and his wife, Judy, has been used by the University as a natural, outdoor “classroom”, and is now the site of the Coldharbour Sustainable Living Center. According to Pam Johnston, Foundation Financial Manager, “The students learned about the legacies and, in some cases, loved ones behind the scholarships they’ve received, which gave new meaning and appreciation to that support.” The land, situated about seven miles east of Gunnison on Tomichi Creek, offers a wide range of natural and historic features and available materials. Butch, who, along with his MBA in Finance from Western, also received a Ph.D. in Environmental Planning from the University College of London, explained the inspiration behind the name. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n “While I was studying in England, my wife and I lived in a place called Coldharbour Farm, which was part of a large dairy farm owned by friends. For over 600 years, according to some historians, this place and its ecosystem have remained virtually intact,” Butch said. “Over the years, we’ve had different goals for our Coldharbour, but they were inspired by Coldharbour Farm, and centered around restoring and protecting the land and its ecosystems,” he said. Restoring, protecting and sustaining nature and natural resources is an important goal of this one-time dude ranch wrangler and long-time environmental planner will now help others achieve thanks to his generation donation. “With this type of support, we can offer our students more fellowships and more qualified faculty, but also connect our valley-wide partners with their expertise and energy,” said John Hausdoerffer, Ph.D., the most recent director of Western’s ENVS Program. “With generous investments from Butch Clark and the Gunnison Valley Housing Foundation, our new Master in Environmental Management Program has taken a major step toward offering higher education that will influence community sustainability and resilience for years to come.” 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 9 My Western Up Story: My Western Up Story: M axine Pierce (‘74) Christopher Greene Foundation Board Member Assistant Professor of Business Administration I live in Mt. Crested Butte, Colorado. My wife and I have a 16-month-old son named Sawyer. I live with my husband David just outside of Bloomfield, NM. I worked in the banking industry for years, but both my husband and I are now retired. My hobbies include training and showing my two dogs, Bazza and Cooper, in agility trials. I recently started training one of those dogs in herding. I also act as the cheering section/support staff for my husband’s passion of racing vintage motorcycles, which also has allowed us to travel extensively. I’ve volunteered for various organizations over the years, including being a tutor for the local adult literacy program, which is a rewarding and humbling experience. Currently, I’m a member of the Western Foundation Board of Directors. As a member of the Board, it’s been fantastic to experience the deep commitment and love that the other members and staff have for Western. It’s truly remarkable. I attended Western from the fall of 1970 until I graduated in the spring of 1974 with degrees in Accounting and Business. “As a member of the Board, it’s been fantastic to experience the deep commitment and love that the other members and staff have for Western. It’s truly remarkable.” While I was growing up I lived in small towns where you knew most of the people. Western was a good place for me to both learn and grow. I met and was friends with people from the East Coast to the West Coast, from service brats who had lived all over the world to service men who were returning from war. The diversity at Western during my time there helped open my eyes to a much larger world. For me, another great benefit of attending Western is the fact that my degree got me my first job, and that job is where I met my husband of 37 years. There are a lot of great memories from my time as a student at Western. I remember the group of us that would gather in the student union between 10 classes to talk, pass the time and play cards. I remember the group that all lived next door to each other my freshman year. We all ate together, formed intramural teams—some good stories there— and, in general, helped each other get through freshman year. I remember a group deciding to volunteer and help in the lighting of the “W”—an interesting experience that I decided not to repeat. I remember the friend that decided I had led too sheltered of a life and so took me with her when she was going to hitchhike to Crested Butte. That experience was short lived as she tried to get a ride with the state patrol, and no, they didn’t stop, but we decided to give up for the day. Thinking about this has really started memories coming back. Mostly, what is memorable about my time as a student at Western is the camaraderie both in and out of the classroom. Some of the unique aspects offered by a Western education now are the reasons I enjoyed attending Western: the small classes taught by professors who not only knew you by name, but were invested in your future, the private University atmosphere in a public University setting, the atmosphere on campus—which was always friendly and helpful; the beautiful location with skiing and other outdoor activities so nearby. Western is and always has been one of the most unique and remarkable places to learn and grow. To me, to Western Up means to offer support to the University any way I can, whether that is financially or by giving of my time, such as serving as a member of the Foundation Board. It means stepping up and moving that support to the next level. It’s a chance to give back to make sure a University that’s unlike any other continues to grow, with better facilities, instructors, academic programs and opportunities. To Western Up is to do your part for the next generation of Western students. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n I am an Assistant Professor of Business Administration. I am also the Director of the Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Project. We are seeking to inspire, connect and empower Western and our extended community to become true MountainMakers—people who put ideas into action through relentless experimentation, learning and implementation in all areas of life. My professional passion is inspiring, connecting and empowering people to become changemakers and problem solvers as innovators, creators and entrepreneurs. I do this not only with my students, but also with the other faculty and administrators at Western and in the community among fellow business owners, entrepreneurs and non-profit leaders—the aforementioned MountainMakers. It is similar to concepts of economic development and small business development, but expanded into an attitude and mindset that affects all areas of life. “To me, Western Up means being brave, taking a chance and supporting something important to our future.” The ICE Project is effecting change in the curriculum at Western, the economic development strategies in the Gunnison Valley and the collaborations among Western and our stakeholders. I am also the co-founder and executive chef of The Ruby of Crested Butte, Colorado’s top-ranked B&B Inn, and Ruby Resorts, a boutique concierge and home management company. I am in the kitchen almost every morning before heading out for Western. As a chef, I am definitely a foodie; in particular, a breakfast foodie. When traveling, I will often visit a few well-researched breakfast establishments each morning, ordering multiple entrées at each, seeing ideas and getting inspiration. I am also an avid mountain biker and hiker. But right now, every spare minute I have is spent with my wife and my new son. He’s at that age where every day something new is discovered and learned. Yesterday, for example, he learned to say “hooray!”, which probably was a result of learning to play on his new slide he received for Christmas. In a previous iteration of my life, as an attorney, I was in the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade in Denver, where I had the opportunity to travel all around the state building entrepreneurial supporting partnerships between private and public entities, including universities, local governments and economic development organizations. The Gunnison Valley was one area I did not visit. One summer weekend in 2004, my wife and I took a day trip to the area from Denver and immediately fell in love with it. It’s very different than other “resort” communities. It was then that I remembered my cousin had been a track star at Western and loved his time here. We immediately began imagining how to live here. Within four months, we had quit our jobs and moved to the area to open the Ruby. We borrowed no money from friends or family, and even had to sell one of our cars on the way to closing for the down payment. One thing that makes Western truly unique is the attitude of the students. They are interested in connecting what they are learning to the real world experiences they are immersed in outside the classroom. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n I’m not sure if this attitude is something they already have before they come to Western and we just attract them, or if we generate this while they are here, or if it’s a combination. But it is definitely something that makes Western unique. The connection students make with the professors and with other students is also a unique attribute. We are small, so there are real opportunities to work together and get to know each other. For me, supporting the University and our communities is a natural thing to do. I’ve been a part of numerous organizations in the Valley, and even founded several. It’s an empowering experience to see an issue and work with others to solve it. This empowerment is gained through experience and seeing others do it. In a way, by supporting Western and the community I’m also supporting myself and my abilities to effect change in all areas of my life. This is what I want to share with others. To me, Western Up means being brave, taking a chance and supporting something important to our future. It takes guts to commit to something and committing to Western is saying you believe in the capabilities of this and future generations of Western grads to solve the big problems they’re facing now, and will continue to face. Today’s graduating students enter a fundamentally different world than that of any of their predecessors. They seek to find their place and make their mark in a time of sustained turbulence. The resulting pressure on individuals, organizations and communities is unprecedented and generates more than just changes to the rules of the game; the game itself is now different. Western is preparing students for this changing world. 11 My Western Up Story: My Western Up Story: Beau Milton Patricia Wheeler Sophomore - Ecology Junior - Biochemistry and Cell Biology I live in Joliet, MT, and have one younger and one older brother and my parents. I am currently a student at Western studying Ecology. My largest passion is Jesus. I also enjoy anything outdoors, including whitewater kayaking, climbing, ranching, hunting, fly fishing, mountain biking, running, skiing and mountaineering. In my downtime I also tie flies for fishing, and do leather projects. I’m originally from Salt Lake City, UT, but now live in Gunnison. I am one of four children (two boys and two girls). I am the younger middle child and the only one living in Colorado. My brothers live in Houston, my sister goes to school in New York City, and my parents live in Salt Lake. Unlike many of my high school peers, I am not married. I first found out about Western from a postcard in the mail that read “High Altitude, Low Cost”, and I thought to myself, “Hey I like that combo. I should check this place out.” After coming down for a tour my mind was set on attending Western. I personally have noticed, from talking with a number of my peers at other secondary education institutions, that Western excels in student relations. There is an incredible student-to-faculty ratio here. I know all of my professors on a first-name basis and each one will take the time to help me if I need help. That is what I feel to be the biggest advantage of a Western education. My top three most memorable experiences at Western involve Bethany Baptist Church, the Whitewater Wilderness-Based Orientation Program and the Western Mountain Rescue Team. Bethany Baptist Church is an incredible asset to the community, which seeks to teach everyone about forgiveness through Jesus and reaches out to students on campus. One great opportunity for students is the free college lunch on Sundays after service. This church group has provided me a support network, close friends and lifelong companions at Western. “I need to strive to do my part to help the University achieve its goals.” My very first experience at Western as a student was being part of the Whitewater WildernessBased Orientation program. I will never forget it. Getting the chance to learn a new skill with a bunch of other new students provided a great challenge, as well as a very fun introduction to college life. 12 I am currently pursuing degrees in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. After I graduate, I plan to apply to nursing school and am looking into becoming a nurse practitioner. And when classes started, I already had a friend group and felt confident meeting new people. The Mountain Rescue Team’s support and encouragement to learn new hard skills and develop soft skills provides me with a sense of belonging that is hard to find anywhere else on campus. There are a lot of things that make Western unique. The small-town environment offers the chance to be involved in things and develop close connections with others. The physical environment surrounding the campus is unreal. The mountains, rocks, rivers, lakes, forests, canyons—you name it—it’s all amazing. And the community of motivated people who are all drawn to “Gunny” because of what it has to offer is another reason this place is so unique. In addition to everyone at Western, the entire Gunnison Valley offers a great accepting community to get plugged in to. I would encourage everyone who attends Western to connect to both the university and to the community. To me as a student, to Western Up means to be thankful for the opportunities I have been given and taking my education seriously. It means being engaged in campus activities and in the classroom. The University functions to educate its students and give them unforgettable experiences. I am a student and need to strive to do my part to help the University achieve its goals, and help other students do the same. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n As a student, Western has given me an incredibly personal education. All of my teachers, friends, coworkers, employers and even community members have played an active role in giving me the type of interactive and challenging education I desire. My first birthday away from home, my entire dorm floor celebrated with me. One of my friends even found a place to bake a cake and we all sat in the hall and ate cake. My roommate had all the people on my floor sign a birthday card for me. I felt really loved and connected to a new community at Western. even through my worst races. I don’t know if I have ever been so mentally and physically tired than I was after that first weekend of racing, but it was a glorious feeling to have new friends, some good races, tons of amazing memories, and to have faced my fears and gone out there. The Foundation’s Celebration of Giving Banquet is my favorite fall event. After speaking my sophomore year and helping organize and prepare for it my junior year, I have a real appreciation for what it means to both be at Western and to receive such amazing support from people all around the nation. This event will be dear to me for the rest of my life because every time I go I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all the incredible life events and provisions that have led me here to this place and this time. I remember that Western is the perfect home for me and that nostalgia brings immense joy and appreciation for the life I have in Gunnison and at Western. The location, the intimate community on and off campus—not to mention the amount of layering that is necessary to survive the Gunnison winters—are a few of the reasons Western is so unique. After speaking with many of my good friends who have attended much larger universities, I’ve realized that the size of Western has made an impact on my life that my friends may never experience at their schools. Western is and will always be a source of joy and growth for me. I haven’t just received an education at Western, I’ve been welcomed into a new community, one in which I will always be accepted. When I see donations and support for the University and Foundation, I feel cared for and encouraged. The support of Western and all that makes it tick shows the importance of education and that there are people who want students to succeed. Through the generosity “Western Up is a challenge to not only give back and of others, I see that provide for the future students, but also to go out into Western is more than a school; it’s a treasure the world and spread the caring, encouragement that will influence the decisions and turn of and passion that defines Western.” events that dictate my life. My first mountain bike race with the Western Cycling Team was quite the adventure! We spent a cold and drizzly weekend camping and racing in the mountains outside of Fort Collins. Everyone on the team helped me prepare and gave me advice for my first races and cheered me on throughout each lap. It was the beginning of a very packed fall season with bike races on the weekends and school during the weekdays. Each weekend, though, my teammates would relieve my stress by making me laugh uncontrollably and always supporting me The Foundation has played a vital role in my experience and ability to fund my studies. The Foundation Scholars Program is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only has the Foundation supported me financially through scholarships, but also through employment. The Foundation staff—Tom, Deb, Debbie and Pam—have become sort of a second family and are always supporting and encouraging me through all of the ups and downs. The Foundation has helped turn Western into my home. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n To me, to Western Up means to live the values that Western instills. When I see Western Up, I see a challenge that goes beyond being a Western student, alum or employee. It’s a challenge to dig deep for that desire that not only makes you want to give back and provide for the future Western students, but also to go out into the world and spread the caring, encouragement and passion that defines Western. 13 Three Mountaineers. Five Championships. At the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, Gabe Proctor won the men’s 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs. Proctor is only the second Mountaineer men’s outdoor track and field athlete to win two national championships in a single year. At the same event, Vegard Olstad became only the second Mountaineer men’s outdoor track and field athlete to win a national championship in the men’s 1,500-meter run. Barbara Szabo won her third consecutive high jump national title at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships before winning her first outdoor national title at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Putting the Student in Student-Athlete The Western Athletic program strives to not only help studentathletes win on the playing field but also in the classroom. In 2012-13, the Western Athletic Department had a 3.1 overall grade-point average and had three Capital One Academic All-Americans. Western wrestling had the second highest GPA (3.334) in Division II. For the second year in a row, the men’s outdoor track and field team was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Outdoor Scholar Team of the Year. Volleyball, women’s indoor and women’s outdoor track and field earned the inaugural Brechler Award, given out by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to the school with the highest team GPA in each sport. Western football, women’s cross country, wrestling and men’s indoor track and field finished with the second highest team GPAs. “Our volunteers in the MAA and beyond, as well as our coaches, staff and student athletes, are extremely committed, and this results in a great product we call ‘Building the Champion Leaders of Tomorrow,’” said Dr. Greg Waggoner, Western Athletic Director. “I am proud of the balance our program has with regard to academics, service, engagement, leadership and competition with integrity,” continued Waggoner. “In the end, we are working hard to ‘do it the right way’, and I am confident that Mountaineer Nation will soon see some of our most visible programs that have struggled gain noticeable ground competitively.” 14 Opposite top: Barbara Szabo Opposite left: Vegard Olstad Right: Gabe Proctor 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 15 The new Mad Jack. Streamlined, modern and more reflective of the spirit of Western. Mad Jack Gets Rave REviews A new Mountaineer mascot design was unveiled at the start of the 2013-14 academic year. The oncampus unveiling event drew hundreds of students, staff, faculty and supporters, who enthusiastically gave the new design a collective thumbs up! “Our new ‘W’ logo is the visual mark that defines Western, but the Mountaineer embodies our spirit,” said Gary Pierson, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs. Noting the careful market research that resulted in both the new “W” and Mad Jack design, Interim President Brad Baca said, “This new look will take us in a bold new direction that embodies athletics and academics.” The new Mad Jack design, as well as new and modern uniform designs, will be incorporated into the Western athletic program throughout the 2013-14 season. 16 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n A Half-Century of Support During the 2013-14 academic year, the Mountaineer Athletic Association (MAA) will be celebrating 50 years of supporting student-athletes. The MAA began as the Century Club in 1963-64. Membership fees were only $100, which also was what a student-athlete paid for tuition and fees. It was renamed the Mountaineer Century Club in 1989-90, and then adopted the current Mountaineer Athletic Association title in ‘95. Over the past 50 years, the Century Club and MAA have raised millions of dollars for student-athletes, raising more than $308,000 last year alone. In addition to MAA fundraising, Western Athletics produced more than $1 million in private revenue sources for the ninth straight year. Western continues to be a leader among NCAA Division II public institutions in private fundraising. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 17 2013 Western State Colorado University Foundation Board of Directors Standing (left to right): Peter Birkholz, Matt Tredway, Terry Brace, Steve Jaquith, Hank Windmoeller, James Shaffer, Art Harter, Brian Johnson, Don Jackson, Chance Chase. To help strengthen that impact, she established the “W” Mountain Minority Scholarship. And then took her support of Western even further by serving as a member of the Western Foundation Board. While on the Board, Sandy made an estate gift of $50,000 in her will to the Foundation for unrestricted use. And after moving back east to Dorset, Vermont, she served on the boards of The Dorset Theater Festival and The Dorset Players. At the time of her generous $50,000 estate gift to the Foundation, Sandy said, “Without unrestricted giving the University is not able to provide some of the more exciting and vibrant offerings and projects that draw students and faculty to Western from all over the country.” With gratitude for their dedication and support, and joy from having known them, the Board recognizes the following Western alumni and employees who passed away in 2013. Sandy passed away on July 6, 2013, at the age of 61, surrounded by her loving family and friends. “Sandy was a joy to know, and she brought joy to so many of our students through her generosity,” said Tom Burggraf, Executive Director of the Western State Foundation. Service to and support of others, however, was nothing new to Sandy. While living in New York, she served on the board of the Joffrey Ballet. “Even though she was not an alumna, she loved Western as if she was. To include this gift to the Foundation in her will, identifies Western with the people and institutions Sandy cared most about.” Burggraf said. In Crested Butte, she was active in The Crested Butte Theater. “That feeling was mutual. We will always gratefully remember our friend.” In Memoriam Roberta Armstrong Barr (1914-2013) Heritage Society Spotlight: David McEntire While this article is focused on David McEntire (‘80), he’s quick to point out that wasn’t the intended outcome of his planned gift to the Western State Colorado University Foundation. “It’s not about me. It’s about Western’s future,” he says. Supporting, championing and helping guide the future of the University he loves is nothing new to David. Since 2006, he’s served as a Western Foundation Board Member, and is currently the Board’s Immediate PastPresident. Which brings up another motivation driving his donation. 28 “I’d like my planned gift to begin a legacy of former, as well as, future Board Presidents making similar donations,” he says. “This is about laying the foundation to build a better future for Western.” And building is a topic David would know something about. The 1980 Western grad, father of four, and husband to wife, Sarah, is a veteran home builder of more than 33-plus years. Currently, David is the President of Amstar Homes and has developed and owns or manages multiple Las Vegas communities. He’s also a member of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association and the Church at Las Vegas Board of Directors, in addition to serving on the Western Foundation Board. “On the Board, we’ve embraced the theme Western Up,” David says. “To me, that means giving back a portion of what you received from Western. To Western Up is to give of your time, talent or dollars.” Or, in David’s case, all three. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n Teacher, school principal, community leader and philanthropist, Roberta Armstrong Barr (‘55) of Durango, CO, passed away on December 13, 2013. She was 99. Along with her husband, Roberta founded the Robert M. Barr and Roberta Armstrong Barr Foundation, which gives scholarships to students preparing to become teachers at both Western and Fort Lewis College in Durango. Roberta earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Master’s in Public School Administration from Western before starting a 40-plus year teaching career in Colorado’s Animas River Valley area, where she lived and worked most of her life. Roberta’s impact on education and involvement in the community was honored and recognized throughout her life. La Plata County (Colorado) named the bridge near her home the Barr Bridge, and Animas Valley Elementary School named the trail that circles it the Roberta Barr Trail. She was named La Plata County Homemaker of the Year twice, and was the grand marshal of the Fiesta Days Parade. An active member of the Animas Valley Grange, she was awarded her 65-year pin in June and was named an Outstanding Granger by the Colorado Grange in 2009. An avid gardener, Roberta’s garden was featured in Better Homes and Gardens’ Flower Gardening issue. 2 0 1 3 R e p o r t o f A p p r e c i at i o n 29 In Memoriam Adrian Dorzweiler (1928 – 2013) Emeritus Catalog Librarian at Western for 31 years, Adrian Dorzweiler, passed away March 10, 2013, at Gunnison Valley Hospital from natural causes. He was 84. Born in Hays, Kansas, he earned a degree in Literature from Regis College in Denver, and a Masters in Library Science from the Denver School of Librarianship. Adrian—known to all as “Dortz”—joined Western as a librarian in 1957. A longtime Western employee and Gunnison resident, he was dedicated to both the University and the town. He is especially remembered for his roles in countless productions of the Webster Players, Gunnison’s local theatre group, as well as Western productions. But perhaps he is best known by Gunnison residents as Santa Claus, a role he faithfully played every holiday season for more than 50 years, never once charging for an appearance. His commitment to Western was passed down to family members—five of his children, four of their spouses and seven grandchildren have graduated from Western. He is survived by 10 children, Anne, Norman (Theresa), Paul, Ruth Logan, Steve (Sharon), Timothy, Vincent, Vivian, William, Yvonne (Todd) Marshall; their mother Teresa, sisters Mary Brown and Alma (Bill) Young, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Patricia Manzanares-Gonzales Western’s Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Patricia Manzanares-Gonzales, passed away on June 8, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. Prior to serving Western, Patricia was the Dean of the College of Education at Western New Mexico University for seven years, and a professor and administrator at New Mexico Highlands University for 16 years. Her educational teaching career spanned more than 30 years ranging from the elementary to the doctoral level. Patricia is survived by her husband of 36 years, Dr. Felipe Gonzales, and their children Pilar Gonzales (Joshua) Wennrich and Vidal Gonzales, as well as beloved godchildren, numerous colleagues, former students and close friends. Arthur “Skip” Kelly, Jr. Former Music instructor at Western, Anne Abbott Ash, of Gunnison, passed away on September 29, 2013. She was 83. A lifelong outdoor sports enthusiast and successful businessman, Skip was the loving husband of Stephanie and proud father of Meaghan and Melissa Kelly. A longtime supporter of Western, Anne established the Rodney Ash String Scholarship to provide assistance to Western students majoring in Music, and to celebrate the memory of her late husband, Rodney, who served as Chairman of the Music Division at Western. Skip was known to be an outstanding athlete, sports enthusiast, mentor and friend, and was known for his positive attitude, magnetic personality and good humor. Additionally, Anne and her two children established the Rodney P. Ash Memorial Music Award, which is given each year to a graduating senior who is an outstanding musician. Anne’s interest and participation in music was almost lifelong. She graduated from the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; earned a Master’s Degree in Voice at Indiana University; and continued her studies in Vienna, Austria, at the Academy of Music, where her husband was on a Fulbright scholarship. Anne and her husband arrived in Gunnison in 1960. In addition to teaching at Western, Anne taught piano and voice to generations of Gunnison children.
