At the Sons of Norway District 6 Convention held in Loveland, Colorado in June, Freya Lodge won Best Large Lodge for District 6 for the second time in a row. Congratulations to Freya Lodge's Officers, volunteers and to you, the membership, for helping to make our lodge such a success. At the Lodge Picnic on August 20th and at the September meeting we will have a report on the District 6 Convention and an overview of Freya Lodge activities for this next year. Enjoy these last few days of summer and I will see you at the Lodge Picnic on August 20th. Yes, they are lyrics to a song but surely typify the summer travels that my husband, Terry and I just completed. Over 12,000 miles in our electric Tesla around the USA. Ask me about it at one of our upcoming meetings! Summer is starting to wind down and to celebrate this, Anne-Marie and Richard Winterhalder have graciously invited Freya lodge members to their home again for a relaxing summer picnic. Set aside Saturday, August 20th and come and enjoy a drive thru the vineyards on your way up to Preston Lake in Cloverdale. Enjoy a swim in the lake, fishing, relaxing with a glass of wine or your favorite beverage, and good food. The main dish will be provided and we ask that you bring sides, and or a dessert to share. BYOB for liquid refreshments and coffee, lemonade, and water will be provided. Call Anne-Marie Winterhalder at (707-8941807) for directions if needed. Please try to carpool if you can as parking is limited. What a great way to end a beautiful summer! Our next event is in September. On September 9th we will have our “welcome back” gathering for our kids who attended Camp Trollfjeld at 7:00 pm in the evening. Along with our campers, we will be welcoming Pauline Allen who will speak on her year at Folk School in Norway. Pauline’s PAGE father, Tor Allen is a fairly new member of our lodge and their family hosted one of the Norwegian foreign exchange students that spoke at our lodge in the spring. Come and enjoy delicious desserts and hear about what it is like to attend school in Norway. It is not too early to start thinking about helping out this year at our VikingFest which will be on October 8th at the Lodge. We will be having a few workshops to make meatballs again this year. Stay tuned for the dates and time. They will be in your next Freya Forum in September. If you would like to see how this big event comes together, think about volunteering some time to work in the kitchen, or step up before the event. Please think about helping this year if you can. It is a fun event but it does take many in our lodge to make it happen. Come and be part of the team!!! I will have a sign- up sheet at the summer picnic – don’t leave the picnic without putting your name on the volunteer list! Looking forward to seeing everyone again at the summer picnic. See you on August 20th! Happy Summer, Karen Larson 3 PAGE 4 Words from the Editor, March 1982 I’ve been a member of Freya Lodge #62 for a little more than a year and a half now. My first association with the lodge and its members was at a Sunday pancake breakfast. As with all of you, I have an interest in my Norwegian ancestry. By joining the Sons of Norway I felt that I could learn more about Norwegian history and culture. Shortly after joining Freya #62 we had elections of new officers. I was going to wait until the next year before volunteering for a lodge officer’s position. My plans flew out the window when I was nominated to become the next Freya Forum newsletter editor. I would like to thank our late, past President, Sherman Quinlan, for nominating me, as I felt what better way to know more about the Sons of Norway than getting involved in its activities. Since joining the lodge I have attended multiple events, camped at Camp Norge, taken a group of our young people for an Unge Venner weekend of skiing, signed up and participated in Norwegian classes and I am now into my second year as editor of the Freya Forum. As a new Lodge member and officer it is hard for me to totally understand the sometimes do-nothing attitude of Lodge members. Many of you, I know, have put in many long hours and years of service and have been instrumental in keeping our Lodge a strong and viable member of Sons of Norway International. You have shown the rest of the members that our membership in Sons of Norway and association with Freya Lodge #62 is and can continue to be both memorable and enjoyable. Those of us who haven’t participated as actively in the running of our lodge activities need to step forward with our ideas, suggestions and volunteer our services. Fraternally, John Hill, Jr. (Well said, John, and still current, 26 years later! Elections are coming up in a few months and we would love to hear from those of you interested in getting more involved in Freya Lodge.) SAVE THE DATE for these great upcoming events! Saturday, Aug. 20th – 4:30 PM - Freya Lodge Summer Picnic at Preston Lake outside of Cloverdale. This is a potluck picnic for Freya Lodge members and their families. Opportunities for fishing, swimming, hiking and/or visiting in the shade of the oak and bay trees. Contact Anne-Marie @ 707-894-1807 Friday, Sept. 9th – 7 PM - Fall Dessert Social – Our Unge Venner member, Pauline Allen, has just returned from spending a school year at a Folkehøyskole in Oslo. Come and hear her tell about her exciting experiences, such as walking in a marching band in front of the Royal Palace on Syttende Mai! Saturday, October 8th – VIKINGFEST!! Saturday, November 12 – Freya Lodge’s 65th Anniversary Lunch Saturday, December 3rd - JULETREFEST Saturday, December 10th – Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair FREYA FORUM FREYA FORUM PAGE Genealogy Why can't I find my foreign born ancestors in U.S. records? I will use the example of Norwegian immigrant, Holm Olson Studsrud, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1883. He should be in census records from 1900-1940 (the 1890 census was almost entirely destroyed). Though it is quite likely he is in all five of these census records, how the records were indexed is often the hurdle keeping a researcher from locating them. Enumerating the censuses was already like playing Post Office, the parlor game where someone whispers in your ear then you have to pass on what you heard to the next person. By the time the message gets to the last player, it is usually a completely different sentence! Census records were handwritten and not always by people with nice penmanship. There is an added layer of that by having people possibly unfamiliar with Norwegian names indexing records for Ancestry.com. (There are other genealogy subscription websites for accessing records, Ancestry.com is the example here.) In the case of Holm Olson Studsrud, his surname was indexed as Skudsrud, Studarud, Studsrud, Studerud, Stuterud, Studtsrude and Stutland. Those were just in census records! His marriage record was indexed correctly, but in one he was recorded as Holm Olson. Other U.S. records, such as city directories, for Holm Olson Studsrud were typewritten and easy to read. Those can be used in conjunction with censuses since they would have taken place in the same locality. If you found your ancestor in Williston, North Dakota in a 1910 city directory, there is a high likelihood your ancestor would also be there in a census. Census records are still a valuable tool to track the locality of your ancestor, it just helps to be aware of what is required in order to find your ancestor in those records. If you've done enough research to know the names of his spouse and children, it is possible to search on Ancestry.com and leaving out the surname altogether. More often than not, your ancestor can be located in a U.S. Federal Census and possibly state censuses as well. Sometimes it just takes some creative searching for that to happen.
