Please take a moment to walk our open spaces when the rain subsides and experience all American Canyon has to offer. We inspire fun, together we create community! ICYMI (In Case You Missed It!) – What a busy winter season, highlights are below: • Snow Day –It was huge! We had nearly 3,000 in attendance. The main attraction was 2,000 square feet snow play area and a three lane sled hill. • Veterans Day – American Canyon is clearly a proud and patriotic community and it showed at this event. • Outdoor/Environmental Programs – Our first outdoor and environmental classes were offered this fall. Opportunities included Acorn Planting and a Trivia Trail Hike at Newell, and a Starry Night Party at the Wetlands. • American Canyon Community and Parks Foundation (ACCPF) – The non-profit partner of the Parks and Recreation Dept. is on solid footing. Their successful events included the Pumpkin Patch at the Pool and Sunset Moonrise Hike. Their first significant accomplishment was the fundraising of $8,000 for a new water fountain at the Wetlands, complete with dog water bowl & bottle filler. IN PROCESS – We have made considerable progress on several projects: • Kimberly Park Stormwater Improvement Project – We are more than 50% complete with the renovation of the soccer field and storm prevention improvements. The Bottom of the Basin Ceremony celebrated the halfway point as we sowed the first seeds for the new soccer fields. • Water Conservation Projects – We’re on our way to achieving our 105-acre foot savings from water conservation projects! Conversions from potable to recycled water and removal of water hungry turf is underway at various locations throughout the city. • Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment – The final plan recommends a very fun and recreational future with projects to include: renovations to the pool and older parks, building a multigenerational community center, and building two community parks. UPCOMING –Look out for these accomplishments this summer: • Clarke Ranch Master Plan – Clarke Ranch is next to the Wetlands and we need your help to figure out what it will become in the future. • Kimberly Park Grand Opening – Renovated Kimberly Park will open this summer, just in time for soccer season. FARMERS MARKET COMING SOON! American Canyon’s very own farmers market will be starting on May 1st! Beginning Sundays in May from 10AM – 2PM you will be able to buy locally grown produce, taste unique food products and enjoy family friendly entertainment. In 2015 the City was awarded a $78,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to launch and support a market for two years. Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association (PCFMA) has been retained to manage and operate the market. As the operator of more than 60 markets in the Bay Area they bring a wealth of experience and exciting ideas. Events at the market will focus on food, agriculture and health. See you there! 3RD ANNUAL COMMUNITY WIDE YARD SALE Yard Sale weekend in American Canyon is traditionally the weekend after Memorial Day – which is June 3, 4 and 5 this year. Last year close to 100 yard sales signed up to be included in maps and advertising provided by the City. This year we also plan to facilitate a “Recycle It” weekend on June 11 and 12 to help with your left over items. Sign up on our website beginning in March. Q & A WITH THE CITY MANAGER We’ve conducted a couple of very popular Question and Answer sessions on Nextdoor. It’s simple - you ask a question, and I answer it! Not on Nextdoor? Nextdoor is a social network designed just for neighborhoods to discuss issues, report lost pets, advertise garage sales, etc. Log into nextdoor.com to sign-up. of the mine ruins into a new gathering place for residents and visitors. The draft Environmental Impact Report will be released in early 2016 with workshops scheduled on specific topics this spring. The proposed plan is available on our website at CityofAmericanCanyon.org/WatsonRanch. Construction of Napa Logistics Park phase one began in 2015 south of the Napa Airport. The 646,000 square foot industrial building should be ready for occupancy in the spring. The second phase, an additional 2.3 million square feet of warehouse/ logistics development, was approved in December 2015 and should be under construction later in 2016. The Napa Airport Commerce Center is seeking entitlements for 5 industrial buildings totaling 573,000 square feet. For efficiency, this project will coordinate with the Napa Logistics Park on significant road and intersection improvements on S. Kelly Road, west of Highway 29. Napa Junction III Mixed Use Residential and Retail Center, located at the northeast corner of Highway 29 and Napa Junction Road, broke ground late in 2015. The developer has the following buildings planned: City Manager’s News CIT Y MANAGER’S OFFICE CITY OF AMERICAN CANYON CITY MANAGER’S NEWS Dana Shigley, City Manager The Canyon Ridge Apartments is a 140 unit apartment project on the vacant property north of Napa Junction Road and east of Highway 29. This project is under construction with the first apartments expected to be available in Spring of 2017. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT UPDATES If increased development is an indicator, the economic downturn is clearly in our rear view mirror. Following is an overview of the many development projects around town. Public review of the Watson Ranch Specific Plan application will continue in 2016. The project, if approved, would include 1,250 dwelling units including single-family homes, townhomes and apartments; a 200-room hotel; a new elementary school; public parks and trails; and rejuvenation 5 City Manager’s News A Tractor Supply retail store was approved by the Planning Commission in December. Tractor Supply construction is anticipated to begin early in 2016. A Taco Bell quick serve restaurant with a drive-thru lane is proposed east of Highway 29 and north of Napa Junction Road. This store is designed with the latest Taco Bell architecture that features an up lit screen wall that will provide some nighttime atmosphere. The replacement of approximately 7,000 linear feet of the very old and leaky 14 Inch Water Main running along Highway 29 from south of the airport to South Kelly Road. This $1.5 million project will save approximately 65 million gallons of water per year. Audible pedestrian signals, the tweeting bird sounds that you sometimes hear when you cross the street, were installed at the intersection of American Canyon Road and Highway 29, making it safer for visionimpaired pedestrians to cross the highway. A Dunkin Donuts quick serve restaurant with a drivethru lane will begin construction in early 2016. The nearest Dunkin Donuts is located 70 miles away in Tracy, so having one here in American Canyon will likely draw customers here from a wide area! BROADWAY (HWY 29) CORRIDOR STUDY Improving Highway 29 is among the City Council’s highest priorities. In 2016, the City will be wrapping up work on a plan for the Broadway District Corridor. This plan provides an opportunity to evolve an autooriented highway commercial district into a livable mixed use neighborhood that also serves as the “face of the city” to the many people that travel on the highway each day. The plan will call for widening the highway to three lanes each direction and modifying the signals to smooth out traffic flow. Be on the lookout for several workshops in the first half of 2016 to let us know your ideas and learn more about the future of our highway corridor. PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS The Public Works Department has been very busy during the last several months and many more projects are scheduled over the coming months. Following is a quick run-down of projects completed since my last update in the Fall/Winter Activities Guide. The new Park and Ride Lot next to the library provides much needed parking for the library, post office and commuters. The lot also includes two charging stations for electric cars and bicycle storage lockers for commuters. The completed Theresa 6 Avenue Sidewalk Project provides a much safer pedestrian travel path to and from Napa Junction Elementary School. A new 4th Lane for Newell Drive was constructed; pavement resurfacing was completed on Donaldson Way near Community Park 2 and Flosden Road was resurfaced southbouth from American Canyon Road. A new 1.5 million gallon Recycled Water Storage Tank was recently completed at the City’s Water Reclamation Facility. This tank will allow for increased production of recycled water which in turn will decrease the use of potable water. Several important studies will be completed within the next several months. The 2015 Urban Water Management Plan is almost complete and will provide in depth analysis of future city-wide water demands and the sources of water to meet those demands. This effort will involve a special focus on identifying one or more, new and reliable long term water supplies. Additional Utility Master Plans for potable water distribution, wastewater collection and recycled water distribution will be finalized in Spring of 2016. These master plans are used to identify locations where new infrastructure is currently needed and where it will be needed in the future to support new development. This information will help form the basis for potential changes in user rates and increased capacity charges that will be subject to rate studies in 2016. ! eese Ch Say While in our parks and programs you and/or your children may be videotaped or photographed by a parks and recreation employee, volunteer or authorized photographer.
