President’s Message
Happy and Healthy 2015 to all! I hope everyone survived the holidays and enjoyed the
family gatherings, food, spirits, friends, gift giving and most of all the love and good cheer
given and received at Christmas and Chanukah. The Holiday sing-a-long was lots of fun as
usual and thankfully no one fell off their chair during the rendition of “The Twelve Days
of Christmas”. The music was fantastic and as always the food was superb! The outside
decorations and lighting displays were cheery and it was enjoyable touring the neighborhood to view. However, it’s never as much fun taking everything down as it is putting it
up; that’s when I wish Santa and his elves would show up to help!!
This year we have many events planned and hopefully most of you will be able to join us.
January is usually a quiet month; a time for us to catch our breath, revisit our New Year’s
resolutions and make additions or possibly delete some that may be impossible to keep,
even thought our intentions were good at the time. February is Super Bowl month and
many will be glued to the television to cheer on their favorite teams during the playoffs. As
for me, I’ll be looking for “Downton Abbey” to begin….
Luckily we haven’t experienced a five foot snow fall like Buffalo and maybe luck will be
with us and we’ll have a better winter than last year; single digit and sub zero temperatures
are a bit too cold, even for a New Englander. I’m sure most of our snow birds have flown
the coop and are enjoying sunshine, swimming pools and palm trees.

President’s Comments: President Peg Muscarella opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. She hoped everyone
had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Vice President’s Comments: Gail reminded everyone to wear their name tags. There is a benefit as you will get the blue
tickets to possibly win some money and it also makes it easier for everyone both old and new residents to learn their neighbors
names. There are a lot of new people here to learn everybody names.
Treasurer’s Comments: Jim MacNeill requested that if there are any chair people or persons whom have worked on things
that have receipts that might be at the meeting to turn them in to him for reimbursement before the end of the year so that he
can finalize the 2014 budget. Dues have come in pretty well of recent. We still have some that are delinquent. Jim reported
the beginning balance of $6,858.90 with income of $780.00 for the month of November; expenses of $286.08. The ending
balance $7,352.82, less the amount in reserve for the 2014 budget of $3,723.13 leaves a discretionary fund amount of
$1,129.69. It was voted to accept the 2015 budget and passed.
Secretary’s Comments: Pam Mormino is on Vacation. Linda MacNeill is taking the minutes for this meeting and also recording so hopefully I won’t miss anything. Linda asked that everyone be sure to sign in at the entrance.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Bingo: Karen Angelo was not present. Everything is going smoothly.
Bocce: Peg Muscarella reported that the sign-up sheets are on the board and that the play begins Tuesday, January 6 th for the
mixed league and the 7th of January for the men’s league. If you do not want to play regularly sign up as a substitute. Duct
work has been added and hopefully it will be a little warmer this year.
Community Services: Nancy Toner reported a whole bunch of Thank-you’s. To her committee for a great job on the Christmas Party – food, music and all the fun. For the great response to the “Giving Tree”. The gifts are all beautiful and 8 children
are going to have a wonderful Christmas. The deadline for the gifts is Friday – December 12th. Please bring your gift to the
recreation center as we will be delivering to Social Services on Friday and the families will be picking them up Saturday. Special thanks to the men’s club for their generous donation. We got well over 50 books for the children. Thank you so much.
Nancy is calling a meeting of the Community Service Committee for Tuesday, January 6 th @ 1:00 to discuss and evaluate our
year and plan future projects.
Dine Out: Jim Toner said that this month, 2nd Thursday, the group is going to Modesto’s in Franklin. The sign-up sheet is on
the board. A good time was had by all when we went to Valentino’s last month.
Dust Catchers: Laurene Shewan said the meeting is this Wednesday at 10:30 in the rec center and bring your items. It lasts
about an hour and what is left gets taken to Goodwill.
Foyer Decorations: Connie Stoll thanked Al and Jeanne Wittkofske for the wonderful December foyer decorations. The sign
-up sheet is on the board for volunteers for next year.
Garden Club: Corinne reported in Anne’s absence. Thanks to all that helped – Corinne Clevenger, Linda Stirling and Linda
Kondik for their help last month with the pots outside the rec ctr. They worked on rejuvenating the plants in the pool area.
Thanks to JoAnne Kobelski who organized this project and has also volunteered to water them weekly. We still need to transplant some of the larger plants. If anyone has some large flower pots that they no longer use please call Anne Martino. We
have some exciting new ideas for next year, starting with our January meeting. So look for the next Garden Club News in January’s Newsletter.
Hillcrest 2nd Annual Chili Festival: John Poole reported in Anne’s absence. The festival was a huge success. We had 6 fabulous chili entries and all were delicious. 1st place – Peg Muscarella, 2nd place - Anne Martino and 3rd place to John Poole. Prizes were awarded to all the contestants. The top winners received bottles of wine imported from Chile along with chili peppers
and spices. Special thanks to all the cooks for making their delicious chili and extra thanks to the clean-up crew.
Handyman: Mike Fecher reported to Peg who noted that there were 12 jobs completed last month.
Hospitality: Connie Stoll thanked Joyce McCormack, Nina Ponte, Sharron Rosati and Linda Stirling for their goodies they
brought to this meeting. There will be a sign-up sheet for volunteers for the next year.
Library: Robin Siragusa said that there are new books all the time and there are puzzles under the TV.

Minutes from December 8, 2014 Meeting
Men’s Club: Tom Fitzgerald reported that Peg Muscarella provided the Men’s Club with a new griddle and toaster. The griddle was going to be used for eggs over easy manned by Jim Toner. He also reported that the hat was passed and $130 was collected for the “Giving Tree” from the men in attendance. The next luncheon will be Wednesday, December 17 th at the Yantic
River Inn and the sign-up sheet is on the board. Tom also reported that in the past they have had a Mother’s Day Brunch which
they would like to have a Women’s Appreciation Day instead.
Newsletter: Linda MacNeill stated that the cut-off for information in the newsletter is December 26 th, if anyone wants to receive their letter electronically, just let her know.
Welcoming: Pat Smith reported that they will be visiting the Lund’s on Looking Glass Cir and that will bring them update.
Women’s Club: Wednesday, December 17th the women’s club will meet at the rec ctr for the “Cookies for Neighbors”. Trays
of cookies will be made up for those that are less fortunate to be able to get out. We are asking that everyone bring 3 dozen
cookies. Also, in January on the 21st @ 1:00 there will be a planning meeting for the next years coming events. Please come to
the meeting with ideas and don’t be afraid to be a chairperson as there are always people to help with the events.
OLD BUSINESS
Peg Muscarella reminded everyone of the New Year’s Eve Party @ 8:00 that will be held December 31 st. BYOB, Pot Luck to
be shared with everyone. $10.00 per person with a good band. Horse Race.
NEW BUSINESS
St. Patrick’s Day Dinner – Saturday, March 14th about $8.00 per person and there will be a sign-up sheet.
Golf Putting Green. Over the course of the past year, the Men's Club developed a sketch, along with some costs, to install a
golf putting green within the Hillcrest community. There were ongoing informal discussions with Nick Verzillo. The proposal
was ultimately advanced to Jensen's through the Communication Committee and assigned an action item number 7-15-1. Most
recently, Joe DePalma provided Nick with some cost information, and we now are awaiting further direction from Jensen's.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Dave Bally announced that the cut-off for the collection of the maintenance crew is December 18 th.
Tom Fitzgerald stated that he performs tax preparation and wanted to let us know of the changes if you itemize your tax deductions – $0.23 1/2 for mileage for doctors and hospital visits, $0.56 for mileage for self-employed and $0.14 for charitable organization mileage. Also he reminded us of the required minimum distributions for those whom are 70 1/2 years old there will
be a huge penalty. There will be a question for the Affordable Care Act also.

MANAGERS CORNER

The Generator at the center is now up and running as promised. We will complete some site work and fence in the unit shortly.
I hope everyone enjoys our Holiday season and enjoys a Happy and Safe “New Year”.
As a reminder to those on the lot plan, we start cleanups after the storm has stopped. We plow or shovel anything over an inch.
Remember to keep deep snow from building up around your heat pump, and your deck. (For a nominal cost we can help after
the plan obligation has been met.) We will do the walk and driveway if you are on the plan. Roads are plowed as often as needed and later sanded. Stay off the roads until they are safe for travel, it’s not worth the risk to get milk or bread. You’re better off
to plan ahead for the little things. We do not sand driveways or walks, we recommend you sprinkle calcium chloride if you are
concerned with slipping going to the mail box, or just wait for the sun to help with the melting before you venture out there. Try
to avoid walking the streets when plowing is in progress as it can cause the crews time and safety concerns. Also I suggest
avoiding early morning and evening walks as temperatures could drop causing icy spots.
The “FINDERS FEE” program!!!! If you know of someone who just might be thinking of a move to a 55+ community, be
sure to sign them up at the sales office. When they purchase either a new home @ Hillcrest or a resale home, you’ll be entitled
to the appropriate Finder’s Fee. Remember, the prospect must be originally registered by you so don’t miss out on this easy
chance for cash. Just call Nick for the info.

SUPER BOWL XLIX PARTY
Are you yearning for warm weather yet? Can’t make it to
toasty places like Phoenix? Read on!
YAHA’s 12th (should we be saying YAHA’s XII?) annual Super Bowl
party will take place at the Recreation Center on Sunday, February 1st,
starting at 5:30 p.m. Pizza, wings, grinders, soda, water, and snacks will
be on the menu. For those with a desire to quench their thirst with something other than soda, feel free to bring your own favorite beverage.
To allow for adequate food purchases and to prevent waste, please indicate your intentions on the Recreation Center bulletin board sign-up sheet no later than Wednesday, January 28th.
You can’t win the big bucks unless you enter! Andy Smith is collecting the
pool money. The $10.00 per box Super Bowl Pool is now posted on the glass
window in the rec ctr foyer. Let’s fill it up early!! There is no limit to the
number of boxes you can take.
The cost for all the fun and food is $3.00 per person, due in advance, cash/check (payable to YAHA) to
Dale Marshall, 12 Indian Hill.
You don’t have to enjoy football to have fun and get a break from the winter doldrums. In fact, based on
prior years, there seems to be more activity away from the TV sets. There will be some door prizes
awarded during the course of the first half of the game. You must be present to win. Just come and enjoy
the social benefits of meeting or talking with your neighbors and then go home at halftime, put on your
pajamas, and watch the remainder of the game. Or, if you don’t want to take a chance on missing Katy

RECIPE FOR THE NEW YEAR
Take 12 months. Remove all traces of bitter memories, pettiness, spite, and unpleasantness. This may take a bit of time
and effort but the end result will be 12 wonderful clean slates
that are ready to fill with all sorts of good things.
Take each month and divide it into equal parts of 30 or 31
days. You can add an optional resolution to each month, but
make sure you keep them pretty general. You don’t want to
get too far ahead of yourself and can always plan out more
details later. From here you will work in small batches taking
each day as it comes within each month to fully realize its
value.
With each new day all equal measures of patience, courage,
faith, kindness, work, rest, meditation, prayer and fidelity.
Finish and serve with liberal servings of love; good spirits and
good humor; one teaspoon each of fun and movement; and a
dash of folly and a pinch of reflection for balance. Repeat for
each new day. Savor. Live. Enjoy.

MACNEILL INDOOR BOCCE LEAGUE:
League play will begin on Tuesday, January 6th for the Mixed League and Wednesday, January 7th for the
Men’s League. We have installed heat vents so don’t let the cold weather scare you.
Sunday indoor drop in will also begin at 2:00 on Sunday, January 11th. It’s a lot of fun to get together during the long winter, especially if you’re not Florida bound! Join us if you want to learn the game or just
observe.

not be any play that day.
QUILTING ENTHUSIASTS:
"Are you interested in quilting? Want to improve your quilting skills or technique? Come join use on
Tuesdays from 10:30 - 12:30. We'll select patterns to try or I'll help you with your quilts. Come join us
even if it's to work on your own projects."
AN OBSERVATION
Ok! Ok! Ok! I know it is the season to be jolly, but this “Elfin” thing has gone too far. I don’t know who
started it, but everywhere you look, a door has a sign reading “we have been Elfed!”. It sounds painful.
So let’s be careful out there. Try not to get hit by one of those “Elfin” things.

COMMUNITY SERVICES:
Our Community Service committee has so many "thank you" words it is hard to know where to start. But
of course number one is our "Giving Tree" put up it seems so long ago but such a fun experience . Watching the beautiful gifts appear under the tree was so joyful. The packing of all these gifts was another experience you should all be proud of. They were carefully checked for belonging to the correct family. Then it
was making sure nothing was crushed in the placing in very large bags. Two or three very happy women
(not mentioning names, Ellen, Pat, Nancy) took all the gifts to Social Services. And along with all the gifts were the fifty books
gathered at our Yule Sing a Long the week before. A great big thank you and letting you know the committee always has confidence in this great endeavor. You folks come thru each and every time.
Our "Singing in the Season" ( or was it named something else?) was enjoyed by our largest group ever and the
food....great....and the singing.....we did pretty darn good on both accounts. Burt and his great musical group (Victor, Claudine
and Noelle) managed to control us in our effort to "sing our hearts out”!. Thank you everyone attending and helping set up and
clean up. It always happens like a miracle.
Now January is upon us and we are worried about the Montville folks, children in particular, who might be lacking a winter
coat. We all take for granted just opening the closet door and choosing what we might want to wear out in the cold that
day! We would like everyone to look more closely at what is in that closet and also ask your younger family members to do the
same. Maybe we can come up with some warm coats we don't need this year. So let's see what we can do for Social Services.
We will be collecting them in the glassed area of the lobby, Many thanks for all your efforts this most joyous season. We truly
could not do any of our "good works" if it weren't for each and every one of you.
Last but not least is a meeting we would like to have in January. The 6th of January, a Tuesday, at 1 pm in the afternoon in the
dining room of the clubhouse. This meeting is open to all folks interested in the activities of the Community Service Committee. We would like to look back and look forward at some of the programs that have been sponsored by our committee. We
need ideas as to what might be helpful in the community we live in and the broader community. So please join us on the sixth
of January.
DUST CATCHERS:
What a celebration we had, trading our goodies and donating the rest. Eleven women (plus 2 drop-offs)
brought a nice assortment of items including a beautiful tea set, vintage glassware, kitchen items, bric a
brac, lots of holiday linens, lights, candles, and other decorative items, including a nutcracker collection. Sondra Tuchman got the "dust buster award" because she gave away everything she brought! She
follows in the footsteps of Gwen Haines. Goodwill will be happy to see me this month because of the
nice selection of leftovers!
Can't wait to see what January brings as we empty our basements and garages. We'll meet on the 2nd Wed., JAN 14 @
10:30. We usually finish up within an hour, so it's not a large commitment of time and it feels so good getting rid of stuff! You
never know what treasure you'll find.

GARDEN CLUB:
We will be having a special Garden Club meeting this month to start off the New Year! The meeting will be at
my home (Anne Martino) Wednesday, January 7 th at 1:00 PM. David Blades will be sharing with us the many
years working as a Horticulturist. David attended our January meeting last year and he spoke about his experience working for a private estate and the many years growing Poinsettia’s. He also has many beautiful pictures
to show us. We so enjoyed his visit and for those that missed it, he agreed to do it again this year. So…come
join us for a wonderful afternoon… Coffee, tea, sweets and good conversation will be served! Everyone welcomed… but
please RSVP 860.892.8633…I need to have chairs for everyone!! 23 Looking Glass Circle
MEN’S CLUB NEWS:
For the monthly breakfast on Saturday, December 6th, we tried out a new menu. Eggs-to-Order instead of staying in the rut and
offering only scrambled eggs. The reaction was mixed. Fifty percent of the attendees stayed in the rut. The moral to the story
– old habits are hard to change.
During the meeting session, it was unanimously voted to donate all the proceeds that was collected that morning for the breakfast, to the YAHA Giving Tree. Then the hat was passed for additional donations. The end result was $131 to make Christmas
just a little merrier for some local needy families.
The next breakfast meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 02, 2015. A sign-up sheet is on the recreation center bulletin
board. This month’s celebrity chef is promising not only eggs to order, but an abundance of other food, locally raised. Should
be interesting.
For the monthly luncheon on Wednesday, December 17 th, we congregated at the Yantic River Inn, in Norwich. The hostess
took one look at us, and immediately shuffled us away from the other diners and led us into the bar. We really didn’t want to sit
and share tea among the twenty Red Hat Society ladies anyway! For the regulars in our lunch group, some were sad and some
were overjoyed. Our aim this day, aside from enjoying each other’s friendship, was to confirm or deny a rumor. It was reported
by a good source that a very special waitress was now employed in this establishment. But, alas, she was and she wasn’t. It
seems that after only three weeks, she picked up stakes and moved (or was moved) on. Maybe, we’ll see her next month somewhere.
For January lunch, we are going to tie in lunch with a tour of a local business. Instead of the third Wednesday, we will be
lunching and munching on the second Saturday of January, January 10, 2015. We are going to tour Cottrell Brewing
Company in Pawcatuck, followed by lunch down the street at C.C. O’Brien’s Irish pub. Since there is no conflict with other
scheduled YAHA events, and the brew master said he would love to see both genders enjoy his products, therefore, anyone is
welcome to join us. A sign-up sheet is on the recreation center bulletin board. We will car-pool and depart the recreation center
at 10:15 a.m. The tour starts when we get there. Wear comfortable shoes.

MONTVILLE SENIOR CENTER NEWS:
I would like to take this time to thank all of our Hillcrest Friends for all of the support you have given to
our Senior Center and our Social Services Office during the 2014 year! You are all truly appreciated and
my staff and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts! What a wonderful community you are and what a
tremendous asset you are to our Town!
Our Dinner & Movie and our Extra Special Bingo will resume this month! We will also begin our new Game Nights, watch for
details! We have so many programs, activities, and services available at the Montville Senior Center for all of our seniors, and
at no cost! Our Dinners and special events are our fundraisers to help offset the cost of the instructors for our many programs!
We have many physical fitness programs, healthy heart and mind benefits, computer classes, creative writing classes, massage
therapy and more! Please come on down and enjoy the senior center! If there is a program you would like to see that we do

We really had a good time. Not only did a large group of people talk with one
another; but a lot of things happened that I am not permitted to talk about. The
food was hot and the food was good, and we had a nice time.
If you want to be with your friends, talk to everyone, learn more about your
neighbors, eat good food, and just have a good time………

TEXAS HOLD’EM TOURNAMENT NEWS:
December 6th Texas Hold’em went very well for three people. Seventeen people started out, and old “No
look at his cards”, Al Vescovi did it for a second time in as many months. Second place went to Andy
“The Calm” Smith, and rounding things out in third as John “Always Complaining” Brophy.
You might recall that Neal “The Shark” Harvey forgot to put a dollar in the kitty for wife Linda last month.
So this month the kitty was up to $30. The lucky person was Al Tuchman (thanks Neal). It was about the
only hand he won all morning. He managed to have 4 of a kind.
We had a first time player, Monique, who I think will be back in spite of an early departure.

NEEDLEWORKERS:
The Needleworkers meet in the Library at the Rec Center on all but the third Wednesday of the
month at 1:00 (The Women’s Club meets on the third Wednesday of the month.) Please join us if
you do any sort of needlework or if you are interested in learning any type needlework such as knitting, crocheting, needlepointing, embroidery, counted cross stitch, etc. We are not experts but enjoy
what we do and our time together doing it. You don't have to come every week … just when you can

I’M LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE: Have a vacuum cleaner that’s not working up to par? Lamps, coffee maker, toaster
oven, power tools, or iron on the fritz? I enjoy troubleshooting them and repairing them. VCRs, TVs, and other electronics are
not on my challenge list. But I will take a look at most household appliances or power tools. I will identify the problem and then
let you know if: (1) it is cost effective to repair it and how long it will take, (2) you should replace it, or (3) I can’t fix it and you

WRONG JACKET TAKEN FROM TEXAS HOLD’EM
On Saturday, November 1st, someone came to the Men's Club breakfast and/or Texas hold’em with a NEW jacket having the
