irst of all, positive thoughts and a quick
recovery to our President Chris Bland. A
couple of stats of late:
• Statistically, Housing starts are at
204,000 (seasonally adjusted per year)
• Unemployment fell to 7.1% (down 0.2%)
This good news and the beautiful weather
in British Columbia have given spring a
great launch. At the BC Floor Covering
Association, we are “gearing up“, for a year
better than ever.
This year, the Flooring Expo will be held on the 18th of October
at the Coast Langley Hotel, and is already showing signs of outperforming last years’ event (thanks to feedback from many of last years’
attendees). The floor covering Expo is a multi-faceted event sharing
knowledge, and opportunities, to all areas of the flooring industry,
from installation, to new products and innovation.
This years’ Expo will launch the “Pathway to Excellence” awards.
These awards will showcase and spotlight the people who make a difference in the floorcovering industry, exemplifying high standards,
and contribution. Anyone wishing to nominate someone, or to see the
criteria of nomination, can call the BC Floor Covering Associations’
office, and we will be happy to send you a nomination ballot.
Training and education will continue at the BC Floor Covering
Association until the end of the year with 11 scheduled training classes from April to December.
Lets’ Get Better at what we do.

‘THE EXPERT SERIES’
with Frank den Hoed of Exclusive Floors
We have the pleasure of welcoming Frank den Hoed of Exclusive Floors to our Expert Series this month.
Frank is a rare commodity in this industry, as he has proved himself over the years as a true all rounder.
He began his career as an installer, eventually becoming a certified Red Seal journeyman, moved into
distribution where he worked with Metropolitan Floors for 9+ years, before opening a new chapter in
his career as an Account Manager at Exclusive Floors. Frank is a flooring pro through and through, and a
great source of wisdom and information.
Q: Frank, looking back on your different
roles in this industry - journeyman installer, distribution representative and contract
sales/manager - which did you enjoy the most
and why?
AS: I’m not sure I could choose one over
the other as I’ve enjoyed all of these roles for
a variety of reasons. Each position offered
its own unique challenges and opportunities for personal development, whether it be
working with my hands and honing skills as
an installer, problem solving for dealers as a
distribution rep, or working with site foreman and installation crews to complete a
large project.
Q: When you started out as an installer,
what made the difference for you as you were
learning your craft?
AS: The first 6 months I floundered. I had
the youthful mindset that this would be “just
a job” until I figured out what I wanted to do.
The moment I made the decision to embrace
flooring as my career, everything changed. I
wanted to learn as much as I could as fast as I
could, so I sought out journeymen and other
industry leaders and would frequently bombard them with questions. It was their willingness to mentor that ultimately molded me
from being that guy “with a job” to a skilled
craftsman, who was able to provide for himself and his family. I’m extremely grateful to
all who’ve contributed to my development
over the years.
Q: What would you say to the youth of
Q: One of the most common issues in our
are compelling reasons why you should
consider becoming a flooring installer over
other trades.
• You’ll always be warm and dry (we need
heat to install most products properly).
• You’ll earn a very comfortable income.
• You’ll be constantly challenged with new
or difficult installations, new products to
work with, etc.
• It keeps you employed even in tough
times. A few reasons for this…flooring wears out, people want to change
colour or flooring type, for the most
part, homeowners don’t want to attempt
installation themselves. Plumbing, electrical, framing, drywall typically happen
only once during the lifespan of a building, but the flooring will change several
times, so you keep employed when other
trades sit at home.
• You can be proud of what you’ve accomplished during the day. As I mentioned
earlier, there is a great sense of accomplishment that comes from working
with your hands and creating a beautiful
finished product.
industry is General Contractors being more
interested in the completion date than risks
associated with starting the job too early.
What advice would you give installers and
contract sales people when faced with this
scenario? How did you handle it?
AS: If you’re getting pressure to begin a
project when it’s clearly not ready, take this as
your opportunity to reaffirm why they awarded you the job in the first place. Educate
them as to why you shouldn’t begin installation, explain the potential pitfalls and cost
implications should they insist you proceed,
acknowledge their concerns regarding their
time constraints and offer to work out solutions where both parties can feel confident
that things will be done correctly and within
a time period that’s acceptable. Remember,
you are the flooring professional, and they’ve
hired you to make sure their job is installed
to the highest quality…remind them of this!
Your last resort should be asking them to sign
a waiver, but it may be necessary to protect
yourself and your staff.

today leaving high school and considering a
career as a floor covering installer?
AS: If you’re not adverse hard work, there
www.bcfca.com
Q: With the benefit of hindsight, what
would you do differently if you undertook a
career in floor coverings all over again?
AS: Truthfully there’s not a lot I would
change, this was the path my career took,
and each step led me to where I’m at now, so I
really have no regrets.
Q: What advice do you have for installers
just starting out in the trade? Rather than
give specific advice, I’ll share two examples of
conversations I’ve had with site foremen over
the years…
AS: Site Forman #1 – “The installers did
really nice work but always showed up late
and left early. They never cleaned up after
themselves. They ate and smoked in finished
units. They continued to park onsite when
repeatedly asked not to. I was always yelling
at them to put on their hardhats and safety
vests. They do good work, but I’m so frustrated with them, I never want them back on
my site!”
Site Foreman #2 – “The installers did really
nice work, they were here early and worked
late to finish. I never had to ask them to clean
up, their units were always spotless. They
parked where they were told, wore their safety gear when working onsite. They were very
polite and willing to help, I only want this
crew on my sites from now on.”
Q: You've worked for some very successful
companies. In your opinion, what would you
say they have in common that was instrumental to their success?
AS: They had vision and a plan, and they
never stopped growing. The typical cycle for
companies is firstly the growth cycle, gaining
clients and growing the business. Next comes
the management cycle, simply managing the
clients you’ve secured. Now comes the tricky
part…if you aren’t still trying to grow, you’ll
likely decline, as you’ll inevitably lose clients
for various reasons (not always your fault).
Stay in a calculated growth mode that you
can control, and tweak your plan as needed.
As the company grows, ensure you’re hiring
the best person for the position, and then

Q: Employers are always looking for great
employees. For you, over the years, what motivated and inspired you to excel at your craft? I
like to think my motivation comes from a simple desire to help. I truly hope that at the end
of my career my peers will be able to say that I
gave more than I took to this industry.
We need to remember we’re all part of a
team in some form, sales people, installers,
warehouse staff, truck drivers, service representatives, apprenticeship program staff,
distributors/suppliers, builders, developers

think this highlights the role the BCFCA can
play, as a voice for all, keeping our industry
connected because success comes when we

BC FLOOR COVERING ASSOCIATION MAY 2016 15
NEW MEMBER PROFILE: OLSON FLOORS LTD.
GENERATIONS OF EXCELLENCE
O
lson Floors was started as an installation
firm in 1963 by Ken Olson in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan. Ken installed floor finishes
in Saskatchewan until 1967 before moving
his family to Abbotsford, BC. He continued
to install floors in the Greater Vancouver area
and the Fraser Valley and trained his sons to
do so, encouraging them to become certified
as he had. In 1984, Ken passed the business
on to his son Bryne, and worked alongside
him until he decided he needed a change of
pace and worked as the Service Manager for
a local Abbotsford store. He retired in 1993.
Bryne continued to install floors and trained
his sons to do so as well. In 2007, Bryne and
his son Darren expanded Olson Floors to
include a retail showroom in Yarrow, BC so
they could offer all of their favourite brands
directly to their customers. Just before celebrating 50 years of flooring installations, Ken
Olson passed away on May 5, 2013. His family
celebrated the success of his business in his
honour in September of 2013. At the beginning
of 2015, Olson Floors partnered with Hunter
Douglas and Canadian Blind Manufacturing to
add window coverings to their offerings. In the
fall of 2015, Olson Floors moved their business
from Yarrow to a larger showroom and design
centre in Abbotsford. Here they are able to
offer both floor and window coverings from
the top brands in the industry with a focus on
service. By expanding their skill set and adding
a design professional to the team, Olson Floors
has been able to help clients specify the best
available products for each project they work
on. Focusing on education, they work to ensure
their clients – builders, designers and home
owners alike – have as much information as
possible about the products they are selecting.
It is important to guide clients to the best decision for their project in terms of function, style
and installation application. With experience
in custom homes, multifamily residential and
commercial projects, Olson Floors brings a
well-rounded range of expertise to the table.
Following some big changes in 2015, the Olson
Floors team agreed that maintaining the
highest level of quality is a priority for their
business. This prompted a visit to Surfaces to
update the team on products and take some
valuable seminars. Upon returning home they
made the decision to join the British Columbia
Floor Covering Association to continue local,
ongoing education and to take advantage of the
benefits of a like-minded community. The Olson Floors team is excited for the year to come
and is looking forward to upcoming events.

LOBA-WAKOL SEMINAR OVERVIEW
L
oba-Wakol LLC is a US subsidiary of German
based companies Loba and Wakol, who
are leaders in the industry offering finishes
and adhesives with systems and solutions
for everything from subfloor prep work, to a
finished floor. They have partnered with Oakhill
Distribution out of Toronto to represent both
product lines throughout the Canadian market.
On February 12th 2016, Oakhill Distribution
and Loba-Wakol held a well attended free
training and information seminar for BCFCA
members at the Floor Covering head office.
The seminar included both classroom time and
full product demonstration. Topics included
moisture testing and mitigation systems,
adhesive performance, sound abatement and
proper subfloor preparation.
Loba added a new and exiting finish to their
vast lineup, the Invisible Protect A.T. This
two component waterborne finish retains the
natural look and feel of untreated wood. With
virtually no grain accentuation, this finish will
leave the colour of the wood in its original
state while still remaining extremely scratch
resistant. Other finishes such as the Impact Oil
and the Easy Finish were also demonstrated.
Oakhill Distribution also demonstrated several
Wakol products including their VOC free MS
Polymer based adhesives that can also be
used as an All in One system. Their PU280
moisture barrier was also showcased which
with two coats will block moisture in concrete
slabs up to 18 lbs./1000 sq. ft./24 hours (ASTM
F 1869) or up to 98%rH (ASTM F 2170-02).
Oakhill Distribution is committed to providing
solutions for all flooring needs and will
continue to offer these educational seminars
for BCFCA members.

THE BCFCA PATHWAY TO EXCELLENCE AWARDS
BC FLOOR COVERING ASSOCIATION MAY 2016 17
NEW MEMBER PROFILE: ALPHA CARPET & DUCT
CLEANING BRINGS ‘HIGHER STANDARD OF CLEANING’ TO
RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS
L
ike most small businesses, Alpha Carpet &
Duct Cleaning had humble beginnings. “In
2004, I had gotten married and had bought
a small apartment in Delta,” recalls Andrew
Littlejohn, the company’s President & Owner.
“The carpet was very dirty so I borrowed my
dad’s truck and portable machine and afterward, I started to think that maybe I could
turn this into a business.”
Littlejohn had been working for his father
installing and cleaning entrance mats for
hotels, banks and other larger commercial
properties. But after putting up a notice for
carpet cleaning in the lobby of his building,
business for the newly created Alpha Carpet
began to roll in. “I started to get a job or two
a week and then it just grew from there,” he
recalls. “After three months, I was able to
quit working for my father.”
“Early on, I just kept borrowing my father’s
equipment but within six months, after
knocking on some doors, I landed some
major commercial contracts.”
Today, the company has eleven employees
and does both residential and commercial
carpet cleaning in the Lower Mainland. Three
years ago, the company added duct cleaning to
its services. “Duct cleaning is a good complement to the services we offer our customers,”
Duct Cleaning is one of our biggest areas of
growth at the moment “ says Littlejohn.
Over the years, Littlejohn has observed
many trends in flooring, including the
introduction of laminate. “Originally, when
I started the company in 2004, laminate was
coming in really strong,” he says. “Everybody
thought it was crazy to go into carpet cleaning,” he recalls.
But he finds there is still plenty of demand
for his services, which also includes area rug
cleaning in Alpha Carpet’s shop in Surrey.
“The residential business has picked up a lot
in last few years,” he says. “I’m noticing that
carpeting coming back a little bit, even in
new homes, where there may be hardwood or
laminate in the main areas but still carpeting
in bedrooms, hallways and stairs.”
The company strictly adheres to the recommendations of the major carpet manufacturers, typically using a hot water extraction or steam cleaning method. Scrubbing
machines are sometimes employed for heavier, commercial work. (Hot water extraction
and steam cleaning are the same).
Littlejohn attributes the company’s success to its commitment to providing a ‘higher

us,” he says. “We pride ourselves on spending
more time in a home or property than average cleaners to ensure we are doing the most
thorough work possible. We also take care to
protect the home, using drop cloths, corner
guards, and so on.”
In addition to building a solid residential clientele, Littlejohn continues to focus
efforts on the commercial cleaning business.
He oversees sales efforts for his company,
attending networking groups and purchasing
smaller customer lists from other (similar)
businesses.
Looking ahead, Littlejohn hopes to continue to expand his business and grow his
network. “I love connecting with and helping other owners in our industry,” he says. “I
hope to continue to expand and see what the
future holds."
