I would like to welcome our newest employee Maureen (Mo) Martinez. Her experience with HOAs makes her a valuable member of our team. This new position will focus on violations of the restrictions and track fines on those properties that refuse to bring their properties into compliance with the covenants. Learning the neighborhood will be the first order of business for her and it takes time to learn the streets, units, common properties and functions of our association. Please stop by to welcome her to our team. A big thanks to those who paid their dues prior to March 31st; the dues collection process ran smoothly for the first three months of the year, including a few residents who caught their accounts up from prior years. Hopefully, others will bring their accounts current as well. With almost 3800 dues paying members in Killearn Estates, we unfortunately make mistakes from time to time but do all we can to correct the situation. However, we were recently presented with a receipt that showed payment in full for past dues and we were puzzled. With the help of Hayward & Rumph and our bookkeeper Bonnie, we researched it thoroughly and determined the receipt wasn’t valid as it didn’t coincide with the only receipt book that we have been using since 2007. When faced with that revelation, the account was paid in full. For Cameron Chase homeowners, the live oak trees lining the north side of Cameron Chase Drive will be removed as these small trees are damaging the sidewalks and roadway. At the time of the development of Cameron Chase, the City required they be planted; no one thought they would grow too large for the space between the sidewalk and the street. There are multiple areas where the roots have lifted the concrete and created a tripping hazard for walkers. We would like your input and ideas for replanting, beautification, etc. I never like removing trees but, in this instance, in a few years they will cause more damage to both the road and the sidewalk. Please send any concerns or comments to me. The principle core of the Kiwanis mission is the belief that the most effective way to enhance a community is to enhance its children. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream and succeed, great things will happen. Community projects provided by members of the Killearn Kiwanis include distributing dictionaries to third graders in public and private schools; sponsoring AKtion Club – a service club for developmentally disabled adults; Chiles High School Key Club – a student led organization that teaches leadership through service to others; and, DeSoto Trail and Gilchrist Elementary Schools K-Kids Clubs -- an organization to teach leadership skills to elementary school students. Other projects include Kiwanis members working diligently to renovate the meeting facility for the Miccosukee Boys and Girls Club by replacing flooring and painting classrooms. Also, school supplies and sports equipment were donated to the Miccosukee Club, and members volunteer on a weekly basis to tutor the students after school. Other activities provided in Miccosukee include a Little League team. The Killearn Kiwanis Club members have provided these services and many others since the club was organized in 1982. Your participation in the golf tournament will enable members of the Killearn Kiwanis to continue, and to enhance existing service projects and to implement new projects. A registration form can be obtained from www.killearnkiwanis. com –or area pro shops. For additional information, please contact Norm Mears at 850-894-0773 or Al Eppinger at 850893-9436. Beat the Heat at the Killarney Way Swim Club A landmark in Killearn Estates, the Killarney Way Swim & Tennis Club celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007 and underwent its most extensive renovation including a complete resurfacing of the pool, updated lighting and the repainting of the bath houses. The pool was built by the original developer of Killearn Estates in 1967 and then sold to a group of families in the mid 1970s. It was later turned into a not for profit corporation made up of Killearn residents and totally supported by its membership. Unbeknownst to many residents of Killearn Estates, it was not a part of Killearn Homes Association or any other homeowners’ associations in Killearn. However, that changed on October 18, 2013. On October 18, 2013, Killearn Community Pool, Inc., a not for profit corporation, deeded the 4 acres of property over to Killearn Homes Association, Inc., at no cost to the association as the former non-profit corporation was only allowed to transfer the property to another non-profit corporation. Swim Club Pool Manager Alan Cox has been with the club for over 30 years, having gotten his start as a 17-year-old lifeguard. Cox and his staff offer an ongoing series of swimming lessons, starting in mid-May until the end of August, Water Babies at age six months and Learn to Swim up to about age 10. Both morning and evening times are available. The Swim Club will be selfsustaining, maintained by user fees. The summer membership fee for residents of Killearn Estates is $450.00. If you’d like to join, you can download the application from our website www.killearn. org and mail to the HOA office with your check, payable to Killearn Homes Association, or call the office and one will be mailed to you. Upon receipt of the application and check, we will mail to you either an access code or a key card for entry, the rules and www.killearn.org regulations, and a schedule of the opening and closing times. We plan on opening on or about the 10th of May with our Grand Opening Memorial Day. By the way, use of the 3.4 acre park area and tennis courts will be open to all Killearn Estates members, free of charge, just like the 9 parks, bridle trails, lakes and common areas are in the community. APRIL 2014 / SUPPORT THE ADVERTISERS WHO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY 5 Learning Should Not Stop in the Summer By Robyn A. Rennick Woodland Hall Academy “I never thought Jay would like going to school in the summer. After the third day (at Woodland Hall Academy), he got me up to go to school early!” That’s not an unusual comment to hear during the Woodland Hall Academy Summer Reading Program. Students work with a tutor for two periods a day and go to a small group (5:1) class in reading as well. This intensive, individualized instruction in reading helps to fill in gaps the child may have missed during the school year and can give him a boost in reading skills for next school year. Enthusiastic, caring teachers use proven multisensorial teaching techniques which keep the students interested and active in their learning. The program meets the needs of students 6 years old to 14 years old. Depending on their needs, phonics, comprehension skill development, handwriting, vocabulary building, study strategies and test taking techniques are taught and practiced. Woodland Hall Academy’s Summer Reading Program runs June 30 – July 25th. Because it is a tutorial program, space is limited. This is helpful at any age, and vital as we get older. Movement is coordinated with the breath to increase relaxation, avoid injury, and promote a profound sense of wellbeing. Working with a local, registered yoga instructor and group of like-minded, health conscious people is a wonderful way to get in shape and expand your social circle. Keep It Slow & Simple (KISS) Yoga classes, include breath work, gentle postures, and stretches done standing, seated, on the knees, and lying on the floor. Two KISS Yoga classes are available at Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Killearn Estates: Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 pm and Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 am. It’s convenient and affordable at only $5 each class. Beginners are always welcome. No experience needed, just start “where you are” and enjoy! 12 SUPPORT THE ADVERTISERS WHO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY / APRIL 2014 www.killearn.org You will be taught to honor your own body, moving within your own limits, at your own pace. Students are encouraged to close their eyes, focusing on feelings in their own body rather than compare themselves to others. Bring a yoga mat, small blanket or beach towel, and a firm pillow for comfort sitting cross legged on the floor, if you are not accustomed to sitting this way. New students are encouraged to contact Donni, the registered yoga teacher, before their first yoga class to ensure no class schedule changes and for any questions. She can be reached via phone, 850-510-9537 or email, donnisue@ embarqmail.com. Planting: Now is the time to begin planting warm season annuals and perennials. When planting perennials, it’s especially important to prepare the soil so that you have good drainage. You’re hoping these plants will last for years to come, so extra effort now will be worth the trouble. Perennials which perform well in our area include agapanthus, Philippine violet, Shasta daisy, coreopsis, crocosmia, verbena, plumbago, daylilies and Louisiana iris. As a rule of thumb, plant in groups of three, five or more. Daylilies and other perennials may be divided now, if needed, but do it soon. Annuals to seed directly into the landscape include zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers, cleome and nasturtiums. Annuals to transplant in full sun include ageratum, celosia, gomphrena, nicotiana, salvia and many more now available in garden centers. For shadier areas plant impatiens, begonias, coleus, Blue Daze, pentas, and torenia. Lawn care: If you are planning to fertilize your lawn, April is the time to do it. Use a 15-0-15 fertilizer with 7.5% water-insoluble or slow-release nitrogen at a rate of no more than 6 pounds of fertilizer per 1000 square feet. Centipede grass should do well with half that amount. Vegetable garden: If you haven’t already done so, plant tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, squash, cucumbers, pole beans, okra and sweet potatoes. Be sure to keep your vegetables well watered. They will need one to one and one-half inches of water per week during the growing season. To prevent the development of fungus and plant diseases, water in 14 SUPPORT THE ADVERTISERS WHO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY / APRIL 2014 www.killearn.org the mornings so that plants can dry out before evening. This is also a good time to plant basil, dill, chives and rosemary. Trees and shrubs: If trees and shrubs seem healthy and vigorous, they probably don’t need fertilizing. If needed, fertilize spring-blooming trees and shrubs after the blossoms fade. Use a 15-0-15 fertilizer with 7.5% water-insoluble or slow-release nitrogen. Fertilize the rooting zone at the rate of no more than three tablespoons per 10 square feet. If you fertilize your lawn with a weed-and-feed fertilizer, be sure none of it gets into the rooting zone of your trees and shrubs. Keep them well mulched, with the mulch pulled back from the stems or trunks. Live oak leaves are falling now and they make very good mulch. Rake them into your beds or if your neighbor has been kind enough to rake his leaves, bag them and place them at the curb, then use those. The old mulch under roses, camellias, and azaleas should be raked out and disposed of. Fungus can hide there and re-infect your plants’ flowers. In Spring the older leaves on camellias, magnolias and other evergreens start to yellow and fall. They will be followed by new growth. House plants: Repot them now and place outside under trees or in a shady spot to rejuvenate them.
