November 2010 Issue 28 All the Staff of Portage La Prairie Canad Inns; Captain Jean-Pierre Turcotte and Crew: I just want to say Thank You from the bottom of my heart. You made our Family Camp the most fun and successful event this year! Everyone put in a lot of time and effort in order to help us succeed and put on a wonderfully family conference. Family Camp 2010 was held at the Portage La Prairie Canad Inns on the weekend of Oct 15-17. A lot of hard work was put in by the Canad Team. They are the most fantastic group of people that I have ever been involved with. The staff raised funds to purchase stuff animals for all the kids (children with cancer and their siblings) and individually wrote out the names of the kids they were given to. That was quite a shopping trip, I’m sure. On top of that they made an archway of balloons and flowers with flower pots welcoming everyone into the main gathering room. I must say I was very excited when I saw this, it was so beautiful and so wonderfully given from their hearts. Then the Guest Services Team made a giant twister game on the floor for all of us to play on Saturday night. Everyone participated and a great time was had by all. Later in the evening our Banquet Services Team serenaded us with 2 songs on karaoke. Through the help of the Great Guest Services Team, and Jean-Pierre Turcotte, Captain | Capitaine, with the commandant, and the crew of the 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School, a huge surprise was arranged for the kids and adults. Everyone had to gather at 1:45 p.m. outside and look into the sky. It was quite a sight to see adults and children of all ages turning in small circles and looking up into the sky. A black object was first heard off in the distance and then the kids heard the sound and then you could just feel the excitement building. All eyes focused on the sound and as it got closer you were able to look at the kids faces and see the awe in their eyes. A helicopter was coming in closer and closer, they were able to see it flying lower and lower and then it landed in the field just beyond where we were standing. I am not sure what the pilots thought of close to 40 kids and adults running towards them and their helicopter. The pilots and crew of the 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School were amazing with everyone. All the kids (and adults too) had a chance to sit and buckle in any seat in the helicopter, the kids had a million questions and the crew answered them all, even if they answered the same question 5 times. I have never seen so many happy smiles on these kids faces. One little boy kept asking me, are you sure we can sit in it, really are you sure? Two other little boys sat in the pilots and co-pilots seats and were preparing to take off, you could tell they have enacted this before, they had the moves down pat, and you could see when they were looking out that front windshield they weren’t seeing the grass and people, they were already flying and discovering. One parent wrote, ―Loved the helicopter! My future space ship pilot really enjoyed that.‖ The kids didn’t leave the crew alone until every single question they could think of was answered. The most special feeling that comes out of having Captain Turcotte and his crew there, was that everyone had a fantastic time and that this great surprise was arranged for everybody and everybody was treated the same great way. No one knew or cared which child was a sibling or which child had cancer. I even imagine that our little angels came down to sit and pretend to fly too. Everybody there was just so happy that these men took time away from their jobs and their families, so that we all could experience what a helicopter is like up close and inside. These are an amazing group of men and I wish to express my heartfelt thanks and warmest appreciation that they came to be a part of our Family Camp 2010 Weekend. Sincerely, Lynda Closson Co-Chair and Family Camp Co-Ordinator Candleligthers Childhood Cancer Support Group On October 15th, Canad Inns Destination Centre Portage la Prairie hosted the annual Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Group. With 24 families (47 children) who attended this event, a lot of great efforts were put forth for their entertainment. Heather Sim and Bonnie Utioh organized a fundraiser (denim day) for proceeds going towards toys for the children. Heather and Bonnie had spent countless hours creating unique decorations for the children as well as making a huge Twister board game for the children to play with. Heather also arranged for a helicopter to land in our baseball diamond, and the children were able to tour the aircraft. A night of Karaoke ended the weekend for the Candlelighters having numerous Canad Inns staff join in on the fun including Bonnie. Thanks for all your great efforts in making the event such a huge success. Canad Inns Destination Centre Brandon, with the leadership of Tim Spiller AGM, spent some time working for Habitat for Humanity. The Canad team enjoyed using sledgehammers and other equipment not used in their daily duties! Despite some sore muscles and a lot of dust, each of the members were pleased to give their time and commitment back to the community of Brandon. A great job by everyone. ―My name is Karen Gott, I am 23 years old. I started with Canad Inns in 2006. I have enjoyed working for and with the hotel. Being a young adult is sometimes trying in terms of what direction is the right path to take my adult career. I have decided to broaden my horizons and get back to my roots. This lead me to attend my first Native Women’s Association of Canada conference. It was held in Ottawa in the fall of 2010. This weekend was very inspiring and gave me the opportunity to run for a youth chair on the committee. Luckily I won the vote and I am now the South Youth Director for NWAC. Being a part of this group I have more reason that ever to get involved locally. For example, last week I had the honour to walk with peers in order to raise awareness of missing and slain aboriginal women. I am very fortunate to have a close team of co-workers at Canad Inns and a fellow employee supported me by joining in the walk. November 2010 Issue 28 Employee of the Month – September 2010 Maintenance Team – Aaron Christopher, Tyler Grohs, Paul Hjelden, Brian Kramchuk, Joe Kulbacki, Charlie Moen, Stephen Vanneste In recognition of their efforts and dedication in overseeing the yearly water park restoration project. Team members put in up to 18 hours per day for three weeks to complete the largest restoration project to date. Each member was given the assignment of managing their own area of responsibility to include enlisting assistance, planning and directing other team members to meet their goals and deadlines. Examples of responsibility ranged from one person placing 2,000 pounds of filter sand from 100 pound bags using a 12 ft ladder in some instances, to restoring fiberglass slides, cement floors, motors, plumbing, structural equipment, sometimes even improving on the original specifications. All team members definitely surpassed expectations by learning and more importantly demonstrating what it means to be a leader. Employee of the Month – August 2010 Ellen Spofford – Splasher’s and Garbonzo’s Lead Ellen is an outstanding employee and is always willing to work around any schedule and help out wherever needed. She has done a fantastic job of helping organize inventory lists and keeping the staff on task. Even when dealing with a disgruntled customer, she always manages to keep a smile on her face. She is a fantastic employee and goes above and beyond the call of duty. Congratulations to some recipients of our ―Everyone Is A Sales Person‖ program. Michelle Simpson Housekeeping Manager Canad Inns Destination Centre Transcona Jamie Kapusta Hotel Accountant Canad Inns Destination Centre Polo Park Michelle Simpson Colleen Labelle Assistant Banquet Manager Canad Inns Destination Centre Polo Park Jerry Comeau Maintenance Manager Canad Inns Destination Centre Polo Park Jamie Kapusta Bob Bajus, Great Western Roadhouse Manager, was pleased to present JESS CARR (bartender) with a cheque for an event that Jess recruited and brought to the Roadhouse. Colleen Labelle Jess Carr and Bob Bajus Jerry Comeau November 2010 Issue 28 I am writing to inform you of the superb customer service I recently received at your Portage Avenue location, and to compliment Mr. Steven Bartlett and his staff for their major part in that experience. My First Officer and I had just arrived off AC 265 on September 20th, and in the process of disembarking from our cab, my baggage was stolen off the curb by a group of passers-by. I entered the hotel, mentioned what had just happened to Steve, and watched your staff spring into action. Eugene Vlarte, Bellman on duty, immediately left the hotel and began a search of the area for the thieves and my crew bag. Marion McKenzie, Director of Sales, co-ordinated a call to the Winnipeg Police Department, and in the hours that followed, overwhelmed me with superb and caring service. Ron Popiel, Assistant General Manager, started his own ground search, eventually tracking the group to a location several blocks from the hotel. From there he contacted the hotel, who in turn reported the suspects to the police. Ron stayed ―on-location‖ until the police arrived and arrests were made. In the end my baggage and well over $2000 in contents was returned, owing directly to the incredible efforts of Steve and his team. Steve, Marion & Ron Traveling for a living, I am mostly happy with a comfortable bed and clean room. The remarkable customer service I experienced that day is ―gold standard‖ and worthy of mention. Please pass on my sincere thanks to Steve, Ron, Marion and Eugene for an incredible job. Sincerely, Richard Captain, Air Canada Eugene Taruna Tailor, Front Desk Agent I wanted to send you a note to thank you and your hotel team for the great experience we had last week during our stay. First, I want to start with the reservation experience. Taruna Tailor. We needed to have equipment sent to the hotel ahead of our arrival and she was extremely helpful and patient, helping us make sure all was there upon our arrival. Once we arrived, all the staff were extremely helpful getting the packages to our room for us and with any questions we had about Winnipeg. The Bell Men were AMAZING. Erwin was so helpful. He drove us and our equipment to Portage Place and helped us bring in all of our equipment. This was way above and beyond. He also arranged to have another Bell Man pick us up at 10:30 pm that evening to bring it all back to the hotel. That gentleman actually taped up the packages for us which was a nice surprise the next morning. I have travelled a lot in my life, and have never come across people that were so helpful and who smiled the entire time doing it. They were all great. I wish I had names of all the others so I could point them out as well, such as the bartender that had only been there a few months and worked Thursday night around 11 pm, and the boy behind the front desk with dark hair that works the late shift and offered us suggestions on people that would deliver pizza to us so late, and gave us umbrellas so we would not get wet. I will suggest your hotel to my colleagues next time I am asked ―where should I stay in Winnipeg?‖ Kristen InField Marketing Group Erwin, Bell Man November 2010 Issue 28 I felt compelled to write you regarding my experience at Area Nightclub. My husband is an Account Manager for my family business and part of his job is to entertain customers. After dinner, one of his customers suggested we try your new nightclub, Area. Upon arriving at Area, we determined it was not likely we would be able to get in, considering the long line of patrons waiting at the entrance. What prompted me to write you this letter is that as we stood deciding what we would do, we were approached by two of your managers (Joe and Allen) who offered to assist us through a VIP entrance for our entire party. The establishment was fantastic, we encountered the friendliest staff we have ever experienced, from security personnel to the service staff. We also had the opportunity to speak further with Joe, who identified himself as the General Manager and he introduced himself to our entire party and thanked us for the visit. I cannot thank your staff and management enough for assisting our business/evening out with such professionalism and hospitality. Best of luck to you in your new club and we will most definitely return. Teri I wanted to take this opportunity to thank one of your employees for exemplary kindness shown Canad Inns Destination Centre Transcona On October 2nd, a social was held at the Transcona Canad Inns. This wedding social was held in honour of my son and his bride to be. I had the pleasure of dealing with your staff in early 2010. Prior to the social event, Karen and Elizabeth were the two ladies that provided their assistance. I have put on a number of socials in the past but really appreciated their help. They did not miss any details, were accommodating and great to work with as we counted down the days to the event. On the days prior, I met Christie who would be my contact person that evening. On the afternoon and evening of the social, the cooperation of staff was above and beyond what I could expect. Everything from Karen, Elizabeth and Christie’s help and cooperation, to the music man, Richard, and the two women bartenders, security and the break down crew. They all contributed to the success of the event. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and acknowledge their efforts, in what turned out to be a fantastic evening for not only my son Kevin and his bride to be, Leanne, but for all our guests. Please congratulation them on a job well done. I am sure Canad Inns must be very proud of these professional men and women. Karen, Elizabeth and Christie Rick I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say ―thank you‖ for a wonderful stay at your hotel on September 17 th. The entire experience of our time at Canad Inns was positive and we left with a refreshed level of confidence in your hotel. During our stay we held a small surprise baby shower in our guestroom for a friend who lives in Winnipeg and the room configuration worked perfect! Every associate that encountered us during our time at the hotel was positive and very professional. From the point of arrival to the time of departure we were impressed beyond belief. The food served in your restaurant was delicious and the quality was profound. Over the past couple of years, I have eaten many meals in hotels and enjoyed the variety of options available on your menu and in the buffet line. It is without a doubt that you did a great job in turning our negative experience into a positive memory – we will be back to stay at Canad Inns Polo Park for future trips to Winnipeg. Candace Ramada Lethbridge I just wanted to compliment one of your staff. My wife manages the Better Living in the Polo Park area. Fareez Kassim happened to drop into her store on a day that I was there. He was just the most friendly and cooperative person. It is easy to see why Canad Inns does so well when you have people like Fareez. I know people usually write only when there are problems; I wanted to write to give a compliment. Gord Assignment Editor, CTV I wanted to take this belated opportunity to thank one of your employees for exemplary kindness shown me and my family on Canad Day at Assiniboine Park. As a business manager myself, I know how valuable those team members are who go the extra mile. Ken Lugg is definitely one of them. On a tremendously busy, humid, hot Winnipeg afternoon, Mr. Lugg took the time to make sure that my elderly father was transported by him personally from a distant parking lot to the main performance venue in the park to enjoy the festivities, not to mention be able to watch a dance performance by his granddaughter who happened to be in a dance troupe visiting from Vancouver. Without his help, we would have had to turn back home. As an ex-Winnipegger living in California for the past 35 years, that effort reminded me of how proud I am to be a Canadian. He embodies the best in all of us. He was gracious, kind and caring and I wanted to let you know what a fine person you have on your team. I personally have shared this experience with my travelling friends and we all will be happy to make Canad Inns part of our traveling experience. Rochelle Westlake Village, California November 2010 Issue 28 On September 2nd, a family was staying at our property and the daughter was celebrating her 6 th birthday. The little girl’s grandmother emailed the hotel with a special request to bring a small note or cupcake to her granddaughter to help acknowledge her birthday since she was not able to be in attendance. Britta Johnson, went out of her way to put a gift together to give this little girl for her birthday. I want to thank you from the bottom of my hear for your wonderful response to my request. It made my granddaughter’s day and you also included the whole family as well. I saw pictures they took of the cupcakes and how extremely pleased they were with the gift. I will make sure to tell my friends and family how you went over and above for your guests, and I will never forget your act of kindness.‖ Hello Stacey. Once again thank you for taking care of us so good during our wedding celebration last month.. we surely enjoyed every minute of it, and it was mainly because of your hard work, great coordination and many suggestions which made our day even simpler… your personnel was friendly, courteous and definitely knowledgeable.. all our questions were answered quickly and without hesitation… once again thank you.
