GROUNDS DEPARTMENT
Submitted by: Dina Myers, Director of Support Services
From the parking lots to the gardens, Charles, Allen,
Tony, and Greg work every day to make a great first
impression for all of our guests. Our Grounds Team
keeps T.J. Samson beautiful. This team is responsible
for maintaining our facilities’ grounds while enduring
the elements of the unpredictable Kentucky weather.
During the snow storms in February and March,
Charles and Allen came in to work when the snow
started in the middle of the night and didn’t stop until
sunset! On the day of the Employee Cookout, Charles
came in before sunrise to pressure wash the deck
simply because “It is a special day for everybody and
the deck just didn’t look good enough.”
All combined, this team has nearly 50 years of service
to T.J. Regional Health. They take pride in their work
and are always looking for opportunities to be of
service anywhere they can. Though the focus of this
team is grounds upkeep and maintenance, they do
so much more than mow the yards. This crew never
hesitates to help when asked.
 Setting up and tearing down for Relay for Life
and other community events.
 Picking up and planting flowers for the beautiful
Gardenia Garden.
 Moving furniture and equipment during our
constant upgrades and renovations.
 Coming in on weekends to assist other Support
Services teams with special projects.
 Assisting maintenance with preventive
maintenance on rainy days.
 Gathering documents for shredding.
 Driving the trash truck to the landfill.
Charles Howard, Allen Garmon, Tony Polston,
and Greg Cash do their best every day to make our
properties safe and beautiful. And though a “Thank
you” would go a long way with this crew, they
wouldn’t turn down a cold bottle of water on these hot
summer days!
A 24-year-old man who had quadriplegia due to a traumatic spinal cord injury was found on routine surveillance cultures to have methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization
of his anterior nares. He had no history of MRSA infection or colonization. To assess the potential
implications of the patient’s MRSA carriage for infection control, an imprint of a health care work-

er’s ungloved hand was obtained for culture after the worker had performed an abdominal examination of the patient. The MRSA colonies grown from this handprint on the plate (CHROMagar
Staph aureus), which contained 6 μg of cefoxitin per milliliter to inhibit methicillin-susceptible S.
aureus, are pink and show the outline of the worker’s fingers and thumb (Panel A). With the use of
a polymerase-chainreaction assay, the mecA gene, which confers methicillin resistance, was ampli-
fied from nares and imprint isolates. After the worker’s hand had been cleaned with alcohol foam,
another hand imprint was obtained, and the resulting culture was negative for MRSA (Panel B).
These images illustrate the critical importance of hand hygiene in caring for patients, including
those not known to carry antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

Unit. Omnicell will automate and streamline many
processes – inventory management, supply par level
management, patient charging, and eliminating the use
of those pesky yellow and orange supply stickers.

Omnicell now in ICU!
The Oxford Dictionary defines collaboration as the
action of working with someone to produce or create
something. There is no better example of collaboration
than the recent efforts to begin the process of
installing Omnicell, an electronic point of use bar code
inventory and billing system in the Intensive Care
At first glance the complexity of this initiative is
not readily apparent. It required participation and
engagement from many different areas Material
Management, IT, Business Office, Finance, and most
importantly the clinical and support staff on the unit.
The ICU is the first unit to be converted, Step Down
will follow shortly thereafter. All inpatient units will
follow, one at a time, until complete. Word is already
spreading and ancillary areas are requesting to be
included in the initiative. Many of the inpatient units
will require physical space modifications, i.e., remove
sinks and cabinets, etc. Those changes will be done
shortly before the unit is scheduled to be completed.
More updates will follow as we continue to have a
positive impact on how we provide patient care.
