Appointment of New Principal Principal`s Perspective
NUMBER 15 17TH SEPTEMBER 2009 Assistant Principals: David Nichols Michael Kelly Karen Harris Principal: Deborah Harman School Captains: Brendan Law Jacqui Shemer Appointment of New Principal Following a four week application and interview selection process, the School Council is pleased to announce the appointment of the new Principal of Balwyn High School, Deborah Harman. Deborah already has an association with Balwyn High School commencing as an Assistant Principal in January 2006 following six years as Assistant Principal at Heathmont Secondary College. She has been Acting Principal of Balwyn High School since December 1 2008. Deborah’s understanding of core educational issues was honed in her Masters of Education and was further enhanced by studies at the Harvard University Summer Institute, Boston USA in 2007. We are excited about Deborah’s vision and leadership qualities which will guide the school on the next stage of its journey and enhance key areas of importance such as Student Voice, building strong, meaningful relationships with students, teachers, parents and the community, educational excellence and visionary leadership. Deborah will commence in this role on 5 October 2009. I would like to thank the selection panel who have been instrumental in this exhaustive process and the subsequent selection of a most competent candidate for the position. The panel consisted of: Grant Burt, (Parent Council member), Kerry Biddington (Teacher Representative), Gerry Schiller (Principal Glen Waverley Secondary College), and Jeremy Beard, (Regional Network Leader, DEECD). I would also like to thank David Nichols for providing excellent assistance to the panel as Executive Officer. Deborah brings with her a wealth of experience from the education sector and a level of capability which will see the success of this school into the immediate future. Jyotee Patel School Council President Principal’s Perspective Principal Appointment I would like to take this opportunity of thanking staff, students, parents and our Boroondara Network Principals for the overwhelming response to my appointment as the new Principal of Balwyn High School. I am very excited to have been given this great opportunity and determined to build upon the wonderful leadership of Bruce Armstrong to ensure Balwyn’s ongoing success and significant place in the Network and Government school system. 17th September 2009 End of Term 3 As the term draws to a close I would like to once again thank the many people who have contributed so much to the school over the past ten weeks. There is always so much happening at Balwyn High School – within and beyond the classroom. The commitment of staff who give so freely of their own time to support our co-curricula program has again been remarkable. These activities provide great experiences and challenges for our students and would not occur to the same high degree if not for the participation of so many of our staff. I wish all staff, students and their families a safe, refreshing, relaxing and enjoyable holiday break. Welcome Back to the Alpine School Students After spending nine weeks at the Alpine School for Student Leadership in Dinner Plain we welcome back Will Scullin, Gunnav Dua, Orien Ibraheim, Gordon Wu, Adrian Lim and Sarra Essa. Over their time away they have experienced a wonderful array of activities and programs and worked on a Community Project which will continue throughout Term 4. I would also like to thank Trevor vanden Driesen who acted as the Liaison Teacher for the program and provided great support to the students and their families. Staffing Update Thank you to the following staff whom we farewell at the end of Term. Their work and commitment to the school is greatly appreciated. • Melinda Pollock • Phil Truscott • Sandra Bell • Martha Diplaris We welcome our new Chaplain, Roy Hamer, who begins his work with us in Term 4. We believe Roy will play an important role in the Student Services Team and will support the very important work of Raelene Curwood (Director of Student Services), Suzie Endrey (Counsellor), Linda Gordon (Youth Worker) and Edmund Chow (Associate Chaplain). Deborah Harman Principal SNAPSHOTS Australian Mathematics Competition Congratulations to Adrian Asigilaou of Year 9 who has been awarded a medal in the Intermediate Division of the 2009 Australian Mathematics Competition. Adrian will be presented with his medal at the Shine Dome, Canberra, on Friday 13 November by the President of the Academy of Science, Professor Kurt Lambeck. Prizes were also won by Kai Kang and Jeffrey Zhu (Year 7), Kristopher Chen, Alex Kwong, Jiani Chen Chloe Lim (Year 8) and Cheney Lin (Year 11). Thirty five students were awarded High Distinctions, one hundred and fifty one received Distinctions and one hundred and forty six won Credit Certificates. We offer our congratulations to all these students. 2 17th September 2009 Assistant Principals’ Report The use of iPod/mp3 music players and mobile phones During the course of this year, a sub-committee of the School Council – Education Policy, has been reviewing the use of mp3 players and mobile phones at school. After exhaustive discussions it was decided to retain the current policy although the sub-committee will continue to investigate how such devices can be used for educative purposes. In general, students are not permitted to bring mp3 players and the like to school. However, in some cases, it is recognised that work for projects/assignments and SACs can be efficiently stored on these devices and assist in completing work in subjects like media. Where this occurs, an mp3 player can be used when under teacher supervision. mp3 players are not permitted to be used in any other circumstances at school other than when under teacher supervision. Should incorrect usage of an mp3 player occur, it will be confiscated. Students are not permitted to use mobile phones anywhere while at school. Students may use a telephone in the relevant level office to make a call should an emergency arise and likewise important messages may be left for students at the level office. Students caught using a mobile phone anytime/anywhere at school will have the phone confiscated and will require a parent to collect it. If a further breach of this rule occurs, the student may be suspended. For safety reasons, students should not use mp3 players or mobile phones on the way to and from school. Your cooperation with adherence to the above rules is appreciated. 2010 Year 7 Netbook Program Our year 7 laptop program will change to a netbook program in 2010. The main reasons for making this change is that netbooks are: the government’s preferred device; more cost effective; and smaller and lighter. It is hoped that the introduction of netbooks next year will help year 7 move towards 1:1 ie every student having a computer. Should there by a large uptake of the netbooks by the 2010 year 7s, there may no longer be the need to have separate netbook classes as has been the practice. The switch to netbooks at year 7 also aligns with the NSSCF funding proposal where the government’s preference is for netbooks to be purchased. The school continues to investigate the most appropriate way to disburse our NSSCF funding however a possibility is introducing netbooks at Year 10 next year. In time, it is envisaged that all students (not just at BHS) will have a netbook device. Term 3 Progress Reports Parents are reminded that progress reports have been prepared and will be distributed via the Parent Portal and Student Portal at 4.00 pm Friday September 18. Unlike the term 1 progress reports, these reports have been prepared for selected students, namely: 1. New students to the school in semester 2 2. Students studying a new Unit 2 subject 3. Students whose progress is cause for concern 4. Parent request All parents and students are urged to check the online reports to see if they have received a report. Behaviour to and from school Students travelling to and from school are to be mindful that they are always ambassadors of Balwyn High School and should behave in a responsible and safe manner. Traffic lights, crossings should be always used and appropriate road laws followed. When waiting for public transport students must not interfere with adjoining properties or litter. David Nichols, Michael Kelly, Karen Harris Assistant Principals 3 17th September 2009 Senior School Report As we head into the term 3 holidays, students of Units 3 & 4 subjects will be commencing a major revision period. Revision lectures are being held during the first week of the holidays as well as during the first two weeks of term 4. Teachers have prepared learning activities and strategies for a step by step approach to revision in their subjects. There is no denying our experience that starting revision and exam preparation early and throughout the final classes in term 4 is crucial in exam success. We wish our students well as they embark on exam preparation. Individual exam timetables for the final exam period as well as the LOTE orals and performance subjects have been distributed to students. Students in Years 10 and 11 should be clear about the end of year program. Students will be required for course confirmation and for the VCE transition program on the following dates: Year 11 Course Confirmation and VCE Transition Program – 24-26 November. Year 10 Course Confirmation and VCE Transition Program – 30 November – 4 December It is vital that students attend school on these dates in order to ensure a smooth transition to classes in 2010. Best wishes for a restful term 3 break. Virginia Mitchell Head of Senior School Middle School Report In the next week most Middle School students at Year Seven and Year Nine will receive a letter with their results from the NAPLAN Literacy and Numeracy tests conducted during Term Two this year. This will provide students and their parents with clear feedback as to how they have performed on the tests against a benchmark score where they would be expected to achieve relative to their age. Unfortunately many students see assessment as the end point in the learning process. This is certainly true in high stakes testing such as the VCE examinations later this year. However, at Middle School we need to change the culture of seeing assessment simply as an end-product or result, to becoming an ongoing process used to provide feedback and inform future learning. This is true not just for benchmark tests such as the NAPLAN tasks, but also for exams, assignments, presentations and other assessment processes within the school. An easy way to illustrate this is to describe two student reactions to receiving a test or exam; one common and one we would like to see more of: “What did I get? What did I get?... Yes!” This reaction is usually followed by the student ‘filing’ the test in the bottom of their schoolbag or at the back of their folder. “Hmmm. How did I go?.... Wow! That’s good, but I wonder what I can do to improve on this section?” This reaction is followed by the student going back to their books, or perhaps consulting a peer before seeking advice from a teacher. The first response see’s assessment as a reward or punishment for how much you have learnt. The second response see’s assessment as a tool to help a student and teacher prioritise for what is important to focus on next. It is the second ‘diagnostic’ approach that we would like to encourage more of in our students and I hope that you can assist your son or daughter in developing this approach to their learning at Balwyn High. Tim Natoli Head of Middle School Year Ten Health and Wellbeing Day Year Ten Health and Wellbeing Day, conducted on Thursday the 3rd of September was a magnificent opportunity for my year level to let off some steam and become more together through various activities carried out through the course of the day. Each of us were able to choose specific health electives, some include Yoga, Real Food, Fitogether and Aikido (Japanese martial art/ self defense). It was compulsory for everyone to attend a Reach session which assisted with the self esteem of people within the year level as well as taught us how to be more aware and supportive of each other’s emotions and feelings (without giving away anything for the year levels yet to experience a Reach session). After Year Ten Health and Wellbeing day, I definitely felt more relaxed, confident and safe within the year level as I have felt an improvement in the support and friendship provided by each member of year ten. It was an outstanding chance which had great results and put a smile on many members of year ten. I would like to thank all external session runners who gave up their time to make a stress-free and enjoyable day for the year tens. I would also like to thank the year ten coordinators and the organizers, who I hope realize how much they have helped the year level. Georgia Batrouney 4 17th September 2009 Melbourne High School Environment Conference On Wednesday the 2nd of September, Environment Captains Trent van Zanten and Monica Foong, as well as Environment Committee members Lucy Harris and Maggie Ng, were fortunate enough to be invited to attend the first Melbourne High School Environment Conference “Practical Solutions”. The event was also attended by prestigious guest speakers from environmental organisations including Friends of the Earth (FOE), Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC), the Wilderness Society, Fairtrade and Monash’s Environmental Group. The focus of the day was to address current and pressing environmental issues such as climate change and the effects of logging in Australian wetlands while encouraging practices such as organic growth of produce. The day also focused on the importance of youth voice when creating change in environmentally related regulations, drawing on the experience that Ellen Sandell from AYCC gained when participating in the United Nations summit in 2007 and 2008. Those involved in the conference came away with a strong sense of empowerment, and a clear message – the future of the planet rests in the hands of today’s youth. Either they can use their knowledge responsibly and make the necessary changes to reduce mankind’s environmental footprint, or they can watch in apathy as the earth continues to disintegrate. We who attended would like to thank the committee from Melbourne High School for organising such an inspiring, and ambitious event. Thanks also to Mr Malpeli and Mrs Mitchell, who provided significant encouragement and support for participating in this initiative. Trent van Zanten & Monica Foong. Music News This term has been a very busy one with our ensembles and orchestras completing their competitions and festivals. We have concluded the term with a range of soirees and once again the work of Mr Rick Freeman and Mr Paul Jones with the organisation and running of the VCE soirees is to be commended .The soirees have provided the performance opportunities for the students which is so vital at this time of the year in preparation for their final performances. This Thursday September 17 we have a vocal soiree to conclude the term, this will provide our vocal students the chance to perform for an audience as they prepare for examinations and assessments for term 4. Thank you to our vocal teachers: Ms Anna Gilkinson and Ms Angela Chiavarolli for the co ordination of this event. Students in the Middle School are preparing for Presentation Night and the Symphony Orchestra has now been finalised and rehearsals have now commenced. The final list for the soloists for Presentation Night will be announced by the end of term and congratulations to all students who auditioned, it was fantastic to see and hear so many of our talented students …congratulations once again to you all! The AMEB practical examination times have now been made available to staff. All students who are presenting for this exam please make sure you are adequately prepared and have an accompanist if needed for this examination. It is strongly advised students keep working hard to ensure the practice is maintained through out the holiday break. If there are any concerns or queries around the examinations parents are asked to contact the music department. We wish all students every success in their up coming exams. Many thanks to our music staff and our music students for all their work over the term and throughout the year, I hope everyone has a well earned break and a relaxing and safe holiday….see you all term 4 for more great music. The Night of the Notables took place at Balwyn High School on the evening of Wednesday, 9th of September, 2009. The Night of the Notables is when students each become a person they think is notable, by dressing like them, acting like them, talking like them, et cetera, and making a presentation about them. The presentation could range from a computer presentation, props, or posters and pictures. To make the challenge harder, parents, family members, teachers and guests would walk around each stall, and ask ‘probing’ questions, such as why the student chose their notable person, or what the notable was best known for. Both presenters and guests were very impressed with how the night turned out, and the quality of the presentations. Before the night started, the students arriving at the hall at 5:45 pm to their previously set up stands. When everyone had arrived, the guests started to amass, and the main organizer, our maths teacher, Mr. Gin, stood up to begin the night. The stress levels were rising with the students, because this experience was very new for us. The guests were tough examiners, and would ask some of the sample questions supplied as well as their own. Afterwards, they said how impressed they were about the quality of the answers, and how well each student had prepared. There were refreshments offered, such as the one hundred piece extra yummy chocolate mud cake and drinks. There were candies at each stand to tempt our visitors. The variety of notables on display was what made the night so interesting for the guests. They could go from visiting Bach to Cleopatra, or from Walt Disney to Florence Nightingale. Not only did the students benefit from learning about their notable, and other notables, but both teachers and parents could learn more about them as well, by asking questions, especially to those people who didn’t know all the notables. The night ended with a group photo of all the students, where both teachers and parents pointed their cameras towards us, to have a photo for this memorable event. While the students were being blinded with the many flashes, the camera holders were jumping around for a good position. However, despite the hard work put into the night, every student felt it was worth it. The parents and teachers present felt very proud of their our efforts. The night was truly a spectacular one. And remember, great minds don’t always have to think alike! Michelle Yan 7P 8 17th September 2009 The 6PM Project is the 14-18 group for Drawn Together.
