Hi Everyone,
Hi all,
Wow has this month flown by. I want to start off by saying that our first hump day ride turned out great with 13
bikes. Captain Keno’s did a great job of getting the food
out in a timely manner. I will say that the portions were
very large and it did not break your pocketbook (I had
chicken fried steak with eggs, potatoes, toast, and a
drink for 6 bucks). After breakfast we continue on up
the coast to the 76 and then went inland to Santa Ysabel and back into town through Ramona. The day could
not have been better, the weather was excellent, and
everyone had a great time. Keep an eye on the website
and blasts for the next hump day ride.
I want to say that after my first month as a Harley
Davidson salesman it has been great. Helping people
find their dreams and put them into action has been so
rewarding. I remember when I first purchased my bike
and the feeling that it gave me, the smile that was plastered on my face for the longest time as I rode down
the road. Now I actually get to help people get that
same feeling. I get to see those smiles as they ride
away on their new Harley Davidson and smile as they
come back and tell me about the rides they have been
on, the emails I get about how great it is to own their
bike. You all know the feeling and every time you throw
your leg over your bike and fire it up that smile comes
back to your face. This has brought me back to remember that it is about the ride, the friendships, and the adventure. So continue to ride with that smile on your
face.
See you all on the road,
Warren Director, SDHOG
Once again I must send out a special thanks to all the volunteers we
had for the Bandit Blood Drive. I know it makes for a long day standing in the street, controlling traffic and trying to make everyone happy.
You all did a fine job. Our dealership said to say thanks. The smooth
control of traffic really helped them to concentrate on the event.
The blood drive was a great success as well as an emotional one. It
was cool to have the CHP’S escort Bandit’s ole chariot down the freeway and into the dealership.
Our old friend Scott from Scoot’s, which now works for Pat & Oscars
was there and had some great wings to munch on. He is looking forward to have the chapter come visit him on a breakfast ride soon.
Special thanks to all our Ladies of Harley. The Bake Sale for our
downed ride’s funds put a couple of hundred dollars in the bank.
Hopefully we will not have to use it this year. Thank you Ladies for all
your hard work.
RETIREMENT AS A WAL-MART GREETER (a little humor)
As most of you know I retired in January of this year. Not
wanting to hang around the house I thought working as a
greeter for Wal-Mart would be fun (a good find for many
retirees).
Unfortunately, as I have gotten older, I have become a little
less sensitive and more direct in my actions.
So after trying my new job as a Wal-Mart greeter last weekend, I lasted less than a day.
About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud,
coyote ugly, nasty woman walked into the store with her two
kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance.
As I had been instructed, I said pleasantly, ‘Good morning,
and welcome to Wal-Mart, Nice Children you have there.
Are they twins? Are you blind, or just stupid?’
So I replied, ‘I’m neither blind nor stupid, Ma’am. I just find
it hard to believe you got laid twice. Have a good day and
thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart. My 25 year old supervisor said I probably was not cut out for this line of work.
You all have a great day and enjoy every moment of it no
matter what it throws at you. Smile, I did
My 25 year old supervisor said I probably was not cut out for
this line of work.

I have been thinking a lot about what I would like to write
about for my article this month. You can only talk about
money and finances so much before you begin to bore people. I decided to write about my experiences with the chapter. When Dan and I first joined this chapter we did not
know anybody. We started attending the general meetings
and I felt somewhat uncomfortable because I did not know
one motorcycle from another. Dan assured me that there was
a difference and that you could hear it in the pipes. I began
looking for motorcycles when we would take a drive or go
for a ride. I quickly learned the difference as I observed. I
bought all the fashions and leather I could. I sewed on our
San Diego Chapter patches and wore them proudly. We
started to meet new people and we were welcomed with open
arms. I had an accident on the Iron Door Ride 3 years ago.
When I was in the hospital I had people from the chapter that
I did not even know come visit me. The flowers filled my
room and they were all from my friends and family from
HOG. It has been an uphill climb for me but I have come
out ahead due to all the support and friendship from members in this chapter. A couple of weeks ago I had not attended the ride and Dan called and said we had a sick member could I come and pick her up at Barrett and take her
home. I did not even think about it as I told him I would be
there as soon as I could. Many thanks were given but not
necessary as I felt I was paying it forward. This is how this
chapter works. If you are a new member welcome and I
hope you enjoy your experiences and can sometime pay it
forward too. The more you get involved the more you will
understand. Thank you to all the volunteers and members
that make this chapter what it is! Lots of fun events coming
up so I am sure I will see you around.

Hey all,
SIS is finally coming together. Our final destination will be the
dealership.
Tents, chairs and tables are being provided by the dealership
leaving us lots of room to earn. Now we are looking for many
donations. Ask everyone you know, you never know where an
outstanding donation can come from.
We also have our first overnighter of the year coming up fast.
Our ride to Yuma should be excellent and we will be meeting
up with our friends from the North, Biggs who will be doing the
ride there to, and I’m sure you’ll all need a little R&R.
As always keep an eye on the calendar for ride times or
changes.
Ride hard and safe as always. Shannon K., Activities, SDHOG HARLEY HISTORY
The 1919 Harley Davidson
(Front cover)
While early Harley-Davidson V-twins were plagued
with many problems, this V-twin represents a very successful basic design produced from 1912 to 1929. Initially rated at 6.5 hp, its output rose to 8.68 in 1929.
Racing models pulled 55 HP from a 61 cu. in. engine in
1915. Its withdrawal from the market because of high
production costs nearly caused a dealer revolt. Racing
versions of this twin easily topped 100 mph. A Model J
set a class record of 103 mph at Daytona, FL in 1920.
Specifications: Engine–45-degree air-cooled V-twin;
bore 3-5/16 in., stroke 3-1/2 in. Displacement–60.34
cu. in. Power Rating–8.68 hp.

GROUP RIDING
We all know that our Road Captains have certain responsibilities during a
group ride. Did you realize that there are certain actions that you are responsible for during a group ride? Another question; are you aware that
San Diego H.O.G. has published a Group Riding Handbook? Want
one? Ask any Officer or Road Captain. They’re free.
The Group Riding Handbook gives general details regarding everyone’s
responsibilities during a ride.
I’ll try to re-cap some of the major points:
Arrive Prepared
Make sure your bike is road ready before you leave home.
Be on time with a full gas tank and empty bladder.
Listen to the pre-ride brief. You’ll be told the route, destination and
any safety concerns. This may not be your first group ride, but it may be
for the rider next to you.
Know About Riding Formations
The Road Captain will also go over the staggered and single file
formations and how best to maintain your position in the group.
Be Familiar With Hand Signals
It is extremely important to be able to communicate your intentions to
the riders around you in a group.
Ride Your Own Ride
This means riding at a pace that you are comfortable with. Usually the ride leader
will set the pace according to the least skilled rider present, but you can always slow
down more if you need to.
In Case of Trouble
If someone has to stop, trailing riders and the sweep rider will also
stop. Then one of the riders can ride forward to inform the rest of the group.
These are some very basics. The Group Riding Handbook gives more details.
The better educated we are as a group, the safer we become.
Remember, Safety is no Accident.
Ride Safe. Have Fun.

First we would like to give a BIG thank you to those who brought baked
goodies to the LOH bake sale on Sat. March 7th for our Downed Rider
Fund. We made $60 that day. That same afternoon we had our first LOH
clinic on "How to Pick Up Your Bike". Everyone that came out had a
good time and knows that if they happen to get into that situation they can
pick their bike up on their own. We are also going to post a video on the
website for those who weren't able to be there.
Our next LOH clinic will be on Sat., May 2 from 2 to 3pm at the dealership. This clinic will concentrate on what a good tool kit to be carried on
your bike should contain and we will review how to go over your pre ride
check. Mark your calendar and plan on joining us for another great time.

What a great month it’s been! Spring is here and with
the time change we have longer riding hours and I
can’t wait. It’s still the rainy time of the year and this
month we lost only one ride to rain (My ride lol), The Barrett
Junction run with Chris K. as my mentor and shot gun. Even
though we didn’t get to ride it with the group we did do a pre-ride
that was great weekday with perfect weather.
I want to thank everyone that gave of their time Saturday with the
blood drive.
Remember we have our first out of state weekend ride to Yuma
Az. on April 25th & 26th and you can get more info from our HOG
home page at http://www.sandiegohog.com/
We also have our 3rd annual SIS (Spring into Summer) coming in
May. I would encourage everyone to come and enjoy all that our
activities folks have put together this year. It promises not to disappoint, and planned when it won’t be so hot, so come on out and
ride with us, get that wind and sun in your face and remember
~People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because
it’s safer to harass rich women than a motorcycle club….

Ride- Recap
03-09, Majors Café
By: Gaby G.
Man, oh, man! What a great day this was for riding, and
a perfect ride this was. I woke up feeling lazy and slow.
After forwarding my clocks for Daylight Saving the
night before, I almost flaked out but then I remembered
it would be guaranteed good food at Major's and Larry
P. always has agood runs... so up and out I went.
Considering the time change, we had a large group with
only one late-comer that forgot to change his clock
(Scott), but Larry kept us in one group. Shuffled into the
middle of the pack, I had a great time going through the
switchbacks on Dehesa Rd. and gliding
through the curves on Japatul Valley. Signals were passed, no
breaks in the group,
laid-back speed, and
I don't even remember any accordioneffect; that was one
of the best group
rides I've ever been
on.
