LETTER FROM THE HARBORMASTER
August is a great month for boating
July brought us many great days of boating as well as many great memories. Weather was
certainly better last month than in June, so I hope that you were all able to get out on the water
and enjoy the sunshine.
Our COSI boat day was another huge success. Thank you to all of the volunteers who
made an extraordinary day possible for so many special people. A very big thank you goes out
to all of the staff at the Abbey Resort for their quick action in helping move the COSI group
indoors when the weather was uncooperative.
To all of the boaters, thank you for making this one of the best Fourth of July’s we’ve ever
had here at the Abbey Marina!
Although students start heading back to school this month, there is still a lot to do at the
Abbey Marina and in the surrounding areas throughout the month of August. I hope you are
able to get out on your boats and enjoy another full month of Geneva Lake boating. In
addition to regular boating activities, August also plays host to a variety of local food festivals,
Venetian Festival in Lake Geneva, the always terrific AYC Casino
Night, and the Walworth County Fair.
Happy Boating,
Eddie Snyder

Clean Marina Initiative Underway
The Abbey Marina and Dockominium Association will be
working with the state of Wisconsin in developing and
obtaining the Clean Marina Status. This is a very high award
for marinas. In the country there are only a handful of marinas
that follow certain green guidelines due to the amount of
vigorous work that is needed for implementation and upkeep.
Wisconsin will have this program in place by late winter or early
spring of 2009, just in time for the next boating season.
On a related note, you will soon be seeing marked recycling
bins around the marina. Please help us take part in this new
recycling initiative by putting all paper, aluminum, cardboard,
and plastic in these containers.
Go Green with these 21 Simple
Steps to Cleaner Boating
Stash Your Trash
1.) Reduce the amount of packaging and plastic you
take aboard.
2.) Put a sturdy trash container on your boat.
3.) Obey the law-always keep garbage on the boat
for onshore disposal or recycling. Keep all trash on
board while boating in inland and coastal waters.
4.) Establish a boat rule that no trash gets thrown
overboard-even apple cores and cigarette butts.
5.) Leave the water and marina cleaner than you
found it-carefully pick up trash left by others.
The Scoop on Poop
6.) Use onshore restrooms before leaving
Clean Vessel Act Granted By State to the
Marina for New Pump Out facility
The Abbey Dockominium Association, under the State
Clean Vessel Act, has applied for a grant to obtain a new pumpout for the gas pier. The new pump will be here roughly 2-4
weeks after the paperwork has been finalized with the state.
This will help our beautiful facility obtain the Clean Marina
status. This new addition will not only help boaters and the
marina, but also significantly help the environment as well.
Clean Boaters Program
The small, extra efforts and
expenses required to practice clean
boating and good environmental
stewardship make sense economically:
for our family's health and safety, for
the environment, and for the future of
recreational boating. Clean Boating
includes all aspects of boat
maintenance, operation, and
housekeeping. Care must be taken
during cleaning, sanding, painting,
fueling, motoring, pumping-out, and
disposing of trash to minimize

shore.
7.) Obey the law-keep untreated sewage out of all
coastal and inland waters.
8.) If your boat has a head, equip it with a USCGapproved Marine Sanitation Device: Type I, II or III.
9.) Use enzyme deodorizers for holding tanks and
portable toilets.
Stop the Drops
10.) Know how much fuel your tanks hold and don’t
top off!
11.) Make sure anyone fueling the
boat knows which deck fill is for fuel.
12.) Use oil absorbent pads to
catch drips while handing the fuel
nozzle between the dock and
the boat.
13.) If applicable, fill up your
boat’s gas tank while the boat is
on the trailer, not in the water.
Maintain Your Boat
14.) Regularly scrub your decks with fresh water and
a brush to reduce the need to use heavy cleaners.
15.) Try to do large cleaning and maintenance jobs
while the boat is out of the water.
16.) Ask your marina or underwater diver to recycle
used zincs
17.) Use a hard (non ablative) anti-fouling paint if
you plan on scrubbing the boat bottom while in the
water.
Here Fishy, Fishy…
18.) Keep only those fish that you will eat today.
19.) Practice catch and release techniques to
ensure the survival of those fish you toss back.
20.) Use circle hooks.
21.) Wet hands or gloves before handling fish you
will release.
