THIS HAS BEEN QUITE THE FEW DAYS. UNBELIEVABLY
COLD WEATHER, ICEY SLUSH THAT MADE DRIVING SO
TREACHEROUS AND A SNOWFALL THAT WOULDN’T STOP.
For the first time this season, the weathermen actually
got it right and we DID get inches of snow that blanketed our reading area. And for me, for us, it couldn’t
have happened at a better time: DEADLINE time. Am
I sleep deprived right now? Sure am... but if something
was going to happen, it’s ALWAYS going to happen
when we’re on deadline!!
Do you know what “Compression” is? It’s part of the
new’ish lingo vis a vis telecasting. Turn to page 50 and
you’ll see what is referred to as “Compression” in today’s world of media broadcasting. Have we ever said
we live in a different world?!!
And as always, Travels with Allen takes us to places,
perhaps, that we haven’t visited before. His stops
were far ranging. Maybe you’ll see a stop you’d like
to visit. Want to travel down memory lane? Then
you’ve got to turn to page 6 and follow Allen along
York Road.
Today, it all seems like a dream. I just left the office
breifly and the sun is shining brightly, the snow and ice
is melting quickly and there’s almost a feeling of, dare
I say, Spring in the air. It’s really
lovely outside, really.
Linda
Regardless, there’s work to be done
and we’re forging ahead. We’ve got
some interesting editorial and lot’s
of advertisers talking about St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. Yup, Easter
is right around the corner and those
Easter suppers will be on our tables
soon. Or maybe you’ll go out with
your family. Look between our covers and you’ll see
some terrific places offering the perfect alternative to
“cooking.” Hey, it’s not a bad thing to dine out!!!
There’s other “stuff” but I want
to turn your attention to some
“goofy” stuff I’m running
through our pages. Guess I should
have saved this for the April
issue, but I’m in a “goofy” mood,
NOW. It has to do with the word
“UP.” Did you ever consider all
the different ways we use the
word “UP.” Read on and you’ll see.
So that’s it for this month. We’re already working on
the April issue.. and weather allowing, there will be a
whole lot less stress to contend with!
We’re also starting to talk “prom.” Can you believe it?
Prom. Think ahead and be prepared.... take the stress
out of what could be a stressful situation and see where
our advertisers can help you with “prom.”
See you then!
Linda

LOCATED AT YORK AND BYBERRY ROADS IN HATBORO, OPPOSITE A
SUNOCO STATION, YOU WILL FIND BURDICK’S HATBORO NEWS AGENCY.
THIS CHARMING LITTLE STORE IS A REAL HONEST-TO-GOODNESS 1940’S
CANDY STORE. YOU READ THAT RIGHT … AN OLD FASHION STEREOTYPICAL
CANDY STORE. I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD AGAIN.
The store has a real soda fountain with spinning stools
and soda levers, a milkshake maker and a container
of water to hold ice cream scoops. The entire front of
the store is one big combination of cigar humidors and
magazine racks. They even carry comic books and
plastic airplane models. Oh yes, if you’re a pipe smoker, you’ll be in heaven.
The rear of the store contains every type of candy

Also, in Yardley and Lower Moreland are two relatively new take out seafood stores by the name of Capt’n
Chucky’s Crab Cake Co. Both are owned by different
people but they share a great deal in common. Both
owners are nice guys (one has a wife working with him
and the other has his daughter assisting him) who are
committed to giving their customers the best at very
reasonable prices. Their selection of fish and prepared
meals is huge. (In the Yardley store I saw shrimp the
size I have NEVER seen. They must have come from
Jurassic Park.) Both also carry interesting soups and
several different desserts. One thing that I found very
funny was that in the Huntingdon Valley store a series
of sealed containers of Kosher Products sit front and
center next to containers of crabmeat and lobster tails.
Only in America!
DeLuca Music Store in Hatboro is now accepting
students for music lessons. They are good at their
job. My friend, whose son is known as “Ten-Thumbs
Smith,” is now playing recognizable music on his
clarinet. They do more than work with kids, they perform miracles!
I don’t have space to mention all of the restaurants I
would like to recommend but I would be remiss if I
didn’t mention La Cena in Bensalem and Pierro’s on
Byberry Road in Lower Moreland. Both are really top
notch restaurants that do everything right. Both have
great catering facilities and should be on your “check’m
out” list if you are planning any special affair. We
hosted a group of our readers at La Cena last year and
they did a very impressive job. Some of our guests have
called to find out if we were going to do it again.
And if you’re looking to save a buck or more on a fireplace, now might be a good time to see Pete. He wants
to clear out everything possible to make room for even
more patio furniture.
Someone’s getting ready for warm weather!! Better
Homes, Hearth and Patio in Ivyland and Fairless Hills
has just finished redoing their stores with all kinds of
magnificent outdoor furniture. Their products are really
top notch. Recently our son moved into a new home
with a great deal of ground. We found a very lovely
and very large outdoor table and chair set that all have
noticed immediately. It’s the perfect size for any gathering, large or small.
Did you know prom season is almost upon us? Party
Girls in Newtown is a go-to spot for the dress your
daughter is clamoring for... The ladies there will take
good care of her and help you negotiate what is appropriate and “in” for the best-dressed prom queen. Their

Have you checked out Lauterio and Friends in the
Marketplace at Huntingdon Valley on County Line
Road? They’ve got some big-time sales going on,
hoping to make room for new merchandise. Jean’s
Antiques & Gifts might have the perfect graduation
present you’re anticipating. And everything is reduced! There’s a darling kids store, Dress Me Up
that’s running a sale as is JJ’s Chic Boutique. Take
a drive over and check out this gathering of fun and
funky shops... all under one roof. Makes shopping
easy and convenient.
Next month, I promise I will write about my visit to a
store that advertises “purchase one item and get four
hundred and sixty extra free.” Also I want to write
about a very enlightening visit I had with the owner of
C&C Roofing. I also will reveal where you can purchase real… not fake … Rolex watches and jewelry on
the “cheap.” And I do mean cheap.
Until then, enjoy the balance of winter. Get your spring
clothing out but keep the snow shovel nearby. Thank
the Lord above that you don’t live in Boston.

Addiction & Recovery
A
s a counselor, I have observed that substance abusers and family members share
confusion about 2 topics: what is addiction? what is recovery? “Addiction” and “recovery” have become buzzwords; so much that
they are translated or interpreted in unpredictable ways. Another phrase, “family disease”
has entered the lexicon, but has not developed
a universal definition. Misinterpretations and
lack of a uniform understanding may contribute
to drug and alcohol’s devastating effects on
addicts. Volumes of conflicting information, advice, homespun wisdom, opinions, and stigmatizations hamstring family members.
How do families effectively support a loved one in the
recovery process? Let us start with the basics; by its
nature, “support” is compassionate, consistent and tolerant. The behaviors of an addicted person can mimic, almost identically, behaviors we commonly associate with
antisocial behavior. These actions assault their ability to
sustain support. Actions create reactions. Support then
becomes proportional to our level of hurt multiplied by
our instincts towards self-preservation and divided by
our fears of “making it worse.” This creates a continuum of support: on one end of the extreme is “Neglect”
and at the other end is “Overprotect”.
When we “helicopter” over someone’s recovery (agonizing over every detail of their daily lives, demanding
to know about every activity minute by minute, giving
commands instead of discussing expectations) we are
leaning towards the “overprotect” part of the spectrum.
Overprotection also applies to shielding an addicted
loved one from accountability. Neglect is propelled
by a lack of tolerance oftentimes described as “tough
love”. Truly effective support is defined by neither of
these extremes but rather a deft blending.
The Dalai Lama once fielded a question about managing consequences for behavior. The questioner drew the
conclusion that enacting consequences undermines a
compassionate mindset. They implied that compassion
and consequences/accountability are a paradox. His
response was that “compassion does not mean lack of
consequences.” The lesson, he explained, is that compassion does not require us to rescue one another or to
martyr ourselves for each other. He proceeded to advise
the audience on two main points:
1. The attitude and fashion in which we maintain
boundaries and administer consequences to those
who violate them determines how effective support
and compassion are.
2. The consequences, when delivered in measured,
grounded and in proportion to the violating behavior, are actually intrinsic to compassion.
Seeing and experiencing the effects of decision-making
whether good, bad or ugly, allows a person to grow in
wisdom. Overprotectiveness can shield a person from
painful consequences of their decisions and, as an
unintended result, prevent them from contemplating
adjustments to their behavior. Balance and self-care are
paramount. Witnessing a loved one suffer in addiction
may obliterate ones attention towards self-care and
balance. Support and education can ease this burden.
Families often need support, (and sometimes counseling or guidance) AS MUCH as their loved one.

treatment, please contact BioCare Recovery at 267392-6060 and ask to speak with Executive Director,
Andrew Vitullo or Clinical Director, Thomas Foley,
CADC. Additional resources may be found at www.

bringing families
together
when emergency strikes
When a sudden illness or emergency occurs, you want family
by your side as soon as possible. Family Alert can help.
Registration is easy and it’s absolutely FREE!
here’s how it works
If an emergency occurs, your Family Alert wallet card will inform emergency personnel that you are enrolled in
the Family Alert program. The card directs them to call the toll-free number where a Family Alert representative
will provide names and numbers of your emergency contacts. Emergency personnel can then call the individuals
you have pre-selected and advise them of your situation. Once informed, your family members and friends can
provide support to you and your medical team.

So How DO Sunglasses Work?
Sunglasses use a variety of technologies to eliminate problems with light and glare. Tinting, Polarization and Mirroring help to overcome these troublesome issues.
The color of the tint determines what parts of the light spectrum are absorbed by the lenses. Gray tints are great all-purpose tints that reduce the overall amount of brightness with
the least amount of color distortion. They’re a good choice
for driving and general use as they offer good protection
against glare.
Yellow or gold tints reduce the amount of blue light. Blue
light can bounce and scatter off a lot of things, thereby
creating a kind of glare known as blue haze. The yellow
tint virtually eliminates the “blue” part of the spectrum and
makes everything sharp and bright. This is a perfect tint for
glasses relating to “snow” activities .
Amber or brownish tints are also good, all-purpose tints.
They have the added benefit of reducing glare and absorb
colors, like blue, in addition to UV rays. This can help prevent the formation and delay of cataracts.
Green tints filter some blue light and reduce glare. And
because they offer the highest contrast and greatest visual
acuity of any tint, they are very popular. These green lenses
were developed by B and L for naval pilots use during World
War II.
Purple and rose tints make the best choice for hunting or
water sports because they offer the best contrasts of objects
against green or blue backgrounds.
Today, many manufacturers employ a process where they
build the tint right into the lenses. Alternatively, tinting can
be applied to the surface of clear plastic and polycarbonate
lenses. These lenses are literally dipped in a special small
liquid vats containing the tinting material which is slowly
absorbed into the plastic. Lenses can be darkened by leaving
them in the liquid longer.
Most of the glare that causes paients to wear sunglasses
comes from horizontal surfaces, such as water or a highway.
A highly reflective horizontal surface will produce a lot of
horizontally polarized light. Polarized lenses in sunglasses
are fixed at an angle that only allows vertically polarized
light to enter. It may sound complicated, but it definitely
works to diminsh significant glare.
Sometimes you’ll see mirrored lenses. These are lenses with
a reflective coating applied in a very thin, sparse layer. Often
times the mirror coating is applied as a gradient that provides
additional protection from light coming from above while
allowing more light to come in from below or straight ahead.
There are many options to selecting the right sunglass lens.
Some are more specialized vis a vis their use. Others are
terrific for general use. Your optometrist or optician is experienced and knowledgeable in the proper sunwear and can
help guide you in selecting the just-right lens for your needs.
Working with a credible professional will insure you’re buying, and wearing, an authentic sunglass lens tailored to your
specific needs. This will insure better vision and the good
health of your eyes.

What’s Cookin’
It might be March, but Winter’s chill is still in the air. I’m not ready to
forego cold weather comfort food completely. After all, you never know
when the last snowfall will occur!!!
The Cornbread is easy to prepare, even easier to enjoy with the Chicken
Salad. And I love the taste of a crunchy baguette topped with the tasty
pepper salad. But there’s nothing more comforting than a baked ziti filled
with gooey cheese. Add a salad, and maybe some red wine, you’ll feel
very comforted indeed!! Enjoy!
Easy Savory Cornbread
3 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted, cooled
11/3 C. flour
11/3 C. cornmeal
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. baking soda
3 large eggs, beaten
1 C. buttermilk
1/2 C. whole milk
Preheat oven to 350OF. Prepare an 8”x8” baking dish. Whisk
flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and baking soda in a
large bowl. Whisk eggs, buttermilk and milk in a medium bowl.
Whisk egg mixture into dry ingredients until just combined.
(Batter will be lumpy.) Mix in 3 Tbsp. butter.
Scrape batter into baking dish and bake cornbread until a tester
inserted center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes.
Pepper Salad w/ Crostini
1/2 C. extra-virgin olive oil
1 large red onion, halved, cut into 1/4” thick slices
1/4 C. thinly sliced garlic cloves
2 red bell peppers, seeded, cut into 1/4” thick slices
2 yellow bell peppers, seeded, cut into 1/4” thick slices
2 orange bell peppers, seeded, cut into 1/4” thick slices

After dinner you collapse into your favorite chair,
kick your shoes off and turn on the TV. Most of us are
spending about two thousand bucks a year for cable
TV. We’re ready to relax, to enjoy and forget the earlier
hours of the day.
As our friend Tony would sing, “F’get about IT.”
Welcome to the visual universe of advertising. Every
show on every subject on just about every cable station
that I am paying for is jam packed with ad after ad after
ad after ad. Many shows now run silent visual ads on
the bottom of the screen during regular programming.
I really can’t stand it!
So, as I have said before, I head for the higher numbered cable stations and watch people shooting alligators or refurbishing old cars or finding state fairs to eat
at. I also watch Animal Planet and the History Channels and other stations where people are either killing
Nazis, looking for aliens from other planets (Have they
looked in D.C. recently?) or searching for eight legged
green creatures with twelve ears in the mountains of
West Virginia.
That has also become impossible. These shows have
a never, neverending stream of commercials during
their rerun programing that are annoying, upsetting
and flat out dishonest. (But wait, if you keep reading I will send you two for the price of one or a ten
inch thick hamburger from your choice of fast food
emporiums.) I have become so bothered by this nonsense that I have come up with a unique tactic meant
to avoid the never ending annoyance. I watch two
or three shows simultaneously. I go for the remote
(science’s best invention) the second I sense a commercial about to blare.
That’s why I love baseball and football. So far the Phillies and the Eagles are not coordinating their playing
time with ads and interruptions as so many stations
have done. Aside from sports shows, flipping often
doesn’t work. They have coordinated their messages.
You now can see the same strange looking guy guy
talking about how his program will clean up your PC
on eight stations at the same time.
My wife thought I had taken leave of my senses.
She couldn’t understand why I got so upset. But two
months ago I showed her something that shocked even
Linda. She no longer questions my sanity.
Most of the stations we were watching had, and I timed
it, slightly over four minutes of commercials, interrupted on occasion by under eight minutes of programming.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close
UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP!!
To be knowledgeable about the proper use of
UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. It takes
UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to
about thirty definitions.
If you are UP to it, you might try building UP
a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take
UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP,
you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain,we say
it is clouding UP.
When the sun comes out we say
it is clearing UP.
When it rains, it wets UP the ground.
When it doesn’t rain for awhile, things dry UP.
One could go on & on, but let’s wrap it UP, for
now our time is UP, so time to shut UP!
Thanks to our buddy, Ron Justis!

Even worse, many of the programs repeated portions of
the show that had run prior to the commercial after the
bothering breaks were over.
Linda thought I was nuts until I produced a clock with
a second hand. She then agreed that perhaps I was only
weird as opposed to nuts.
I also kept thinking that many of the people on the shows
we were watching sounded like Mickey Mouse or Alvin
the Chipmunk. Their movements seemed out of sync
and very herky jerky. I never remembered Loretta Young
talking so quickly or Dinah Shore singing as though she
was sucking helium. It all seemed very strange.
267-981-4163
of commercials during the programing period. They
call this “COMPRESSION.”
I wasn’t wrong.
You can’t avoid this bombardment. Even the Super
Bowl has become the Commercial Bowl. Many people
appear more interested in the commercials than the
game itself. The morning-after-shows always show
more “favorite commercials” than football. Why don’t
we just have a super bowl of commercials? At least I
wouldn’t have to explain them to my wife!
What to do? I don’t have an answer.
Then one morning my daily dose of the bible… the
Wall Street Journal… appeared on our doorstep. And as
is my practice, I read it before breakfast. And there was
the all-time article of articles… COMPRESSION!
A government that should protect us from this obscenity is too busy to interfere with some of their largest
contributors. I guess the only solution is to forget the
“TELLIE” and head for the Internet.
The cat is out of the bag. The stations that I questioned, hoping to make more money, were shortening their shows to allow for more advertisements.
Many programs had removed almost sixty percent
… or more … of the introductory portions of their
show’s trailer. Worse yet, they were intentionally
speeding up their programming by as much as twenty percent to enable them to insert additional batches
Have I failed to mention that the Internet doesn’t seem to
be any better than TV? But I don’t need to tell you that!

COMPRESSION
I
have a problem. I can’t put things to
sleep. When I see things that infuriate me I often sit down at night, write
about the issue and head to bed. I’m happy… sleep like a baby… but not for long.
Like bad food, many such items just
keep repeating themselves over and over
again. Therefore I feel compelled to write
about certain issues over and over again.
Several months ago I wrote about advertising. Where
ever I go, whatever I do, whatever I look at and whatever I listen to or hear about is infested with, I didn’t
say saturated, advertisements.
Now I know that in certain cases advertising allows for
some things to be free… like our beloved little Uptight
Suburbanite. But other things cost, cost plenty and we
should not be victimized by those who are greedy. After
all, we do pay for Sirius Radio, cable, the Internet and
many apps on our phones. These fees should be enough.
Many things I have always taken for granted are also
being destroyed by advertisements. Things that were
enjoyed free are now being covered and blasted with
ads and announcements. It really is horrible. It makes
me want to scream.
In late October I went on the boardwalk to enjoy the
view, the air and the solitude. No more. I discovered
every bench now has an ad. People walking wore
hats and shirts with ads for every imaginable product,
services and business firm. A quick look at the ocean
revealed ships sailing by with all types of advertisements on their sides and sails. Lord help us, even the
sky has become a huge billboard for planes carrying
signs and banners. We even have airplanes destroying
the magnificent view with skywriting. And at night, we
now have boats toting electric signs reminding us that
such-and-such an entertainer will be appearing at the
blankity-blank casino.
When Linda and I went for breakfast the menu and
the placemats were… you guessed it… a collection of
ads. Did I mention the TV blaring overhead? Actually
it was a monitor with a neverending series of loud and
annoying ads. Later, at dinner, it was even worse and
conversation with friends was all but impossible.
People now use their autos as ads. Magnetic ads appear
on fenders, roofs and doors for every possible product
and service. Rear windows are being used to announce
the number, size and sex of family members. Even
their pets are included. Recently, I’ve noticed a new
idea. People are using their rear windows… especially
on sedans… as mobile tombstones for loved ones who
have passed away.
Trucks are covered with propaganda and advertisements.
Some even bare the works of local unknown graffiti artists. Our highways are littered with billboards and signs
jammed into the ground. Many buildings also are covered
with “messages” hawking all types of products. Sidewalks and pedestrian crossings have not been exempted. I
mean, have you spotted the ads on the side of the turnpike
toll booths? Billboards litter I95 and 76. In certain areas
of the city every square inch of abandoned buildings is
covered with misspelled words and cool statements and
pictures donated by neighborhood “artists.”
A trip to the supermarket is even worse. Every shelf
is an opportunity for an advertisement. Monitors are
everywhere, describing just about any product or service you can image. People are being hired to clog the
aisles and hawk products from little stands. In case you
haven’t noticed … even the floors have advertisements.
So do most register tapes.
Enough already. Enough!
So finally, you, and I, arrive home... after a long day of
“ad-bombardment.” Life is tough. Work is hard. Family
and friends can be difficult. The mail can be upsetting.
