Denver Golf Expo, February 10-12 at the Denver
Merchandise Mart Plaza Hall, is the Rocky Mountain region’s hottest event for the golf industry.
Mark Cramer, President of Denver Golf Expo, says,
“2012 will be even bigger and better as we enter
our 12th year of managing the Denver Golf Expo.
This year, we’ve also streamlined two important
components to make access to the Expo more convenient: pre-purchase Expo tickets and the addition
of two shuttles and more parking options.”

Cramer says, “We continually assess the Denver
Golf Expo experience to keep the Expo experience
a positive one. In addition, we continue to add more
exhibitors, bring back the popular exhibits, create
more freebies, and more excitement for golfers.”
Snow might keep golfers away from the courses,
but beginning and seasoned golfers alike mark their

New Year, New Name:
The CGA/CWGA Used Club Sale
Benefits Youth Programs
By Diana Rowe
DIVOT Contributiong Writer
T
his year we have revamped our CGA/CWGA
Used Club Sale in an effort to raise more
money for our development programs," says
Eric Wilkinson, Director of Junior Competitions of the
Colorado Golf Association. "Formerly known as the
CGA Golf Swap, our new tagline is 'Donate. Purchase. Give Back to Golf One Club at a Time.'"
Get a new set of clubs for Christmas? Looking for a
great deal on a driver at the Expo? Help a good
cause and donate your used clubs or purchase
your replacement set at Colorado Golf Association's (CGA/CWGA) Used Club Sale during the 2012
Denver Golf Expo, Friday, February 10 through Sunday February 12!
More Quality Clubs
According to Wilkinson, "This Holiday Season,
CGA/CWGA has teamed up with the PGA Superstore in an effort to bring more quality clubs to the
CGA/CWGA Used Club Sale. The CGA/CWGA set up
a donation center inside the PGA Superstore for
golfers of all ages to donate used equipment. Our
goal this year is quality over quantity. Each club donated gets us one step closer to raising money for
our programs that introduce golf to kids that might
otherwise not get the opportunity."
Did you know that many of the clubs donated are
from tournament players? The CGA/CWGA would
like to think that your purchase of CGA/CWGA's
used equipment could have been used by a former
state champion or high school phenoms.
Donations Accepted
The CGA/CWGA's Youth Programs needs your donations for its annual Used Club Sale. If you're in the
14
Expo Issue
market for the odd iron, a proven driver or a starter
set for someone special, visit the CGA/CWGA's Used
Club Sale during the 2012 Denver Golf Expo. You'll
find great deals on previously owned equipment, and
you'll do something good for your community.
Individuals may also donate clubs and choose to
collect 70 percent of the selling price, with the
balance going to CGA/CWGA Youth Programs, or
simply allow the CGA/CWGA to keep all of the
proceeds. Due to the organization's non-profit
status, any donations are eligible to be used as a
tax deduction.
The annual used club sale raises much needed
funds for its youth developmental programs. These
proceeds go directly to CGA/CWGA Youth Programs, a non-profit entity that supports developmental programs such as those offered by Big
DIVOT Magazine
Brothers and Big Sisters of Colorado, Boy Scouts of
Colorado, LPGA/USGA Girls Golf, Special Olympics,
Girl Scouts of Colorado and Goodwill Industries.
Junior Golf Experience
Customers who purchase used golf equipment can
see first-hand how it can change a junior's life by
visiting our Junior Golf Experience located right
below the CGA/CWGA Used Club Sale. This year
CGA/CWGA hopes to have a larger presence by expanding the experience area.
CGA/CWGA also continues to actively support the
Junior Golf Experience during the Expo. According
to Wilkinson, "Last year, hundreds of kids enjoyed
the Expo's Junior Golf Experience. We're excited
to get more kids involved in the game in 2012."
If juniors are looking to get more involved in
CGA/CWGA's junior golf program they can stop by
the CGA/CWGA booth located at the entrance of
the Junior Golf Experience. For those juniors at
heart, if you ever had a burning rules question, or
DIVOT Magazine
are interested in joining the CGA/CWGA, please
stop by the booth to speak with a staff member.

Air-Cool Returns With Great
Deals on Golf Clubs and Shirts
By Diana Rowe
DIVOT Contributiong Writer
B
ob Levine, from Air-Cool, is known for the
great deals he brings to the Denver Golf
Expo, but this year, Levine is raising the
bar by offering a new golf driver, the Air Force One
by Power-Bilt with an Air Force One by Power-Bilt
woven shaft.
Levine says, "The woven shaft is the best in golf
and the head of the club contains liquid nitrogen.
Every time you swing, it's adjusting to your swing
speed. When you hit the ball with nitrogen, the
ball comes off the head with 25% faster speed,
with no slice, netting you straighter drives and 2535 yards more."
Voted by Golf Digest, on the hot list, as #1 driver in
the PGA for length and accuracy, the Air Force One
by Power-Bilt has lightweight, higher balance-point
shafts designed to accelerate faster and generate
greater swing speeds.
"These clubs retail at $400," according to Levine,
"but during the Denver Golf Expo, we will sell these
Air Force One by Power-Bilt drivers at $99. We will
have both men's and ladies drivers. These are on
the hot lists for manufacturers for straightest and
longest drivers. We'll also have the entire set of Air
Force One by Power-Bilt nitrogen irons at comparable discounts."
Levine is also bringing a new line of Americanmade golf bags. Unlike those made in China, these
have Polymer around the bag and each club locks
in. Clubs and grips are held in place so they never
scratch. These beautiful men and ladies' golf bags
are priced at up to 60% off.
Levine says he's also returning with the popular Eco
16
Expo Issue
Air-Cool Bamboo Charcoal golf shirts - but increasing
his inventory and offering a wider range of options.
"Made of 45% Recycled Synthetic and 55% Bamboo
Charcoal, these Natural Healing - Eco Air-Cool Shirts
are healthy for the environment and healthy for your
body. By using Recycled Polymers, we are able to rid
the extra plastic waste and save our landfills from
over flowing. By adding the Bamboo Charcoal, we
have now made our shirts naturally absorbent without adding any harmful chemicals."
The Air-Cool design of these new shirts is still
guaranteed to keep you cool and dry all day, and
as usual, Levine is excited about the upcoming
Denver Golf Expo and Air-Cool show specials.
Natural Healing - Eco Air Cool is available in
many styles and colors and you can choose from
sizes S-4XL.
Thousands of golf shirts will be at the show, and
Levine says his prices are better than ever! He'll
have a line of larger sizes in Pima cotton at $5, including lots of ladies sizes. He's introducing a
ladies' line of breathable shirts for just $5 - discounted from $45 - in 15 different colors, ranging in
size from small to XXL.
To make room for this year's, last year's line of world
famous Air Cool Golf Shirts will be on close-out at
the Denver Golf Show - at up to 80% off. Denver Golf
Expo is a perfect time to stock up on Air Cool Golf
Shirts. Remember, the Air-Cool Golf Shirts sell out
quickly, so make us your first stop.
For more information about Air-Cool products including the Natural Healing - Eco Air-Cool Shirts, log on to
their website at: http://laveenaircool.com.

fter more than 15 years, our partnership
with Divot Magazine (formerly GOLFViews
and the "Official Publication for the Denver Golf Expo") continues to be a winning twosome," says Denver Golf Expo director Mark
Cramer. "Last year, Divot Magazine debuted its new
look at the Denver Golf Expo, and in 2012, Publisher
Karl O'Keefe enters his 20th year of publishing a
golf magazine in Colorado. The loyal support we've
known for over a decade and a half continues with
the 2012 Denver Golf Expo."
With its stellar reputation in Colorado, Divot
Magazine provides coverage of the Denver Golf
Expo event to its readers. The results are a blend
of two trusted industry leaders to create one of the
most premier golf shows in the West.
"Just as the Denver Golf Expo is growing and
changing to meet the needs of the industry, so is
Divot Magazine," reports Publisher Karl O'Keefe.
"Because of my growing website and email marketing services, I'll be going to a four-issue seasonal publishing schedule, which more realistically
represents Colorado's unique golf market. Each
issue will reflect how courses and golf related
businesses position and price themselves throughout the year. And while I will be publishing fewer
issues each year, I will be printing more copies per
issue and delivering them to more distribution
points throughout Colorado than ever before."
Published four times a year, including their special January/February issue highlights the Denver
Golf Expo, Divot Magazine strives to re-educate
and entertain its 30,000 readers. O'Keefe's company also publishes the popular Green Saver Golf
Discount book, containing over $7,000 in golf and

Colorado schools, this is a reality!
At last year's Denver Golf Expo, Colorado PGA
President Tim Lollar announced to a gathering of
golf industry representatives, teachers, parents
and kids that the Allied Golf Associations of Colorado had formed a coalition to take golf on the
road - or in this case, to the schools. The coalition
will introduce the game to kids whom otherwise
might not be exposed to golf.
Lollar said, "By unifying we will deliver a sustainable program that embraces individual communities, their school system and local corporate
supporters in an effort to impact the children of Colorado for years to come."
According to Kevin Laura, President of the Colorado Open Golf Foundation, "The initial target of
the Colorado PGA Golf in Schools Program was to
reach 20 schools across the state and 3,000 children in 2011. Longer term goals envisioned building
to 60 schools and 9,000 children by year 5 (2015)."
However, Laura reports that demand has been
high and schools have enthusiastically embraced
this program. "Over 8,000 kids in 42 schools have
been introduced to golf in the first year of the program all at no cost to either the school or the kids!"
A typical curriculum consists of kids receiving instruction three times at school, presenting the fundamentals of the golf swing in a fun interactive
atmosphere. Afterwards the basics, they head over
to the golf course to experience the game in its natural setting.
Ultimately, the success of the program centers
on the synergy created between the three core elements: the participating school, the PGA Golf Professional, and the golf facility.
Eddie Ainsworth, Colorado PGA Executive Director adds, "One of the attractions of the game of
golf is a tradition of integrity, courtesy, respect and
sportsmanship. Through this partnership, we can
introduce children to this great sport and create an
DIVOT Magazine
opportunity to reinforce these values. In addition,
this points them down a path to participate in a
sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime."
The Colorado Open Golf Foundation is comprised of the Colorado PGA, the Colorado Golf Association, the Colorado Women's Golf Association,
the Club Managers Association, and the Rocky
Mountain Superintendent's Association. This program is offered for no cost to either the student or
the school and has been endorsed by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. Funding for this
program is made through the generous support of
the Colorado Open Golf Foundation, the Colorado
PGA Foundation, and contributions from corporate
supporters. D

“Made in America” Dimension Z Golf
returns to Denver Golf Expo
Edited by Diana Rowe
DIVOT Contributiong Writer
T
he Dimension Z booth at the Denver Golf
Expo will proudly show you the highestquality golf clubs you can buy – as it does
each year. What may not be obvious is that the Arvada, Colorado, company is among the last to still
wave the “Made in America” banner.
Most golfers don’t realize this, but virtually all of
the golf clubs sold under famous brand names – Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Nike, Ping, Cobra,
Cleveland, Adams and the like – are now made in
China or the Far East. Callaway still makes some
clubs at its corporate headquarters in Carlsbad,
Calif. But the company recently announced that its
last manufacturing operation in the USA will be
transferred next year to Monterrey, Mexico.
Dimension Z’s custom-fit, precision-manufactured clubs are still proudly made in the USA by
American craftsmen who are very proud of what
they make.
“We seem to be the last holdouts of an industry
that’s moved offshore,” said Dimension Z founder
and president Don Ingermann. “Are we patriotic? I
hope so. But the USA is the only place we can
maintain our quality standards.
“We started our company because the word
‘quality’ already was becoming less and less important to the famous brand name club makers,” says Ingermann. “We’ve built our reputation on producing
golf clubs made to the tightest, most demanding manufacturing standards in the industry. And the only way
we can maintain this quality level is by having skilled
craftsmen make our clubs here in the USA, rather
than by cheap labor in China, Taiwan, and Viet Nam.”
Stop by the Dimension Z booth and hold one of
their clubs. It won’t look much different from a shiny
new club stamped with a famous brand name. It’s
out on the golf course that “the Dimension Z difference” becomes apparent.
Golfers who play Dimension Z equipment uni-

versally report the clubs help them play better. The
clubs are made so well that each club in a set performs the same, delivering consistent results.
“After-sale reports from our customers tell us
that competent, low-handicap golfers who play Dimension Z clubs improve their scores by at least six
strokes,” Ingermann adds.
Ingermann says that recreational players – the
novices and occasional golfers who don’t play often
enough to move out of the mid to high-handicap category -- report even greater improvement. These
players, the people who make up the majority of the
world’s golf population, tell the Dimension Z folks that
their clubs lower scores by 10 to 12 strokes or more.
No other club manufacturer can report results
like this. And Ingermann strongly believes that his
company couldn’t deliver such high-quality, scorelowering clubs if they were made in the Far East.
Dimension Z does buy a few club components
from companies in China, because that’s the only
place they can get them any more, according to Ingermann, but all their precision-manufactured
clubs are built by skilled American craftsmen. Experienced team members weigh, grind, measure,
test and frequency-match every single club we
make. In fact, each Dimension Z club is tested 400
different ways. All 360 degrees of every club’s shaft
is measured, and the Dimension Z performs 40
other quality tests - before the club goes out the
doors of their only plant in Arvada.
“Dimension Z seems to be the last of a vanishing breed,” Ingermann says, “but we wouldn’t have
it any other way.”
Included in your Denver Golf Expo admission,
courtesy of Dimension Z Golf, is a complimentary
custom built Lob wedge or rescue wood (shipping
and handling fees apply).

“Made in America” advantage, log on to their website: www.dimensionz.com, call (303) 403-8344 or

Lenny’s Golf Shop returns as sponsor of the
popular Club Test and Driving Range
By Diana Rowe

L
enny’s Golf returns to the Denver Golf
Expo and as host to the Demo Days Club
Test and Driving Range, a popular gathering place every year. Yet in 2011, with Lenny’s Golf’s
sponsorship, according to Mark Cramer, president
of Denver Golf Expo, the Club Test and Driving
Range was the best year yet!
“Everyone knows Lenny Nosewicz of Lenny’s
Golf,” says Cramer. “And everyone knows that
when Lenny gets behind an event, he puts 150 percent of his effort into making it a success. That’s
what he did for the last 2 years at Denver Golf Expo,
and we’re thrilled to have him back again in 2012.”
Since the early 1980’s, Lenny’s Golf has been a
Colorado favorite offering the best in golf equipment, apparel and custom fitting. Lenny’s Golf participated in the Expo last year, but Lenny says,
“We’re really excited to return as sponsor of the
2012 Denver Golf Expo’s Club Test and Driving
Range with 15 hitting stations to loosen up the golf
swing and try the new 2012 club models. And we’re
bringing something new this year: state-of-the-art
fitting equipment for the driving range!”
To enhance the Demo Days Club Test and Driving
Range experience, Lenny’s Golf state-of-the-artfitting equipment will tell you what shaft you need.
“It’s an amazing tool for golfers,” says Lenny. “Today
it’s a lot more than simply figuring out how to hit. We
can pop different shafts on your club and net you
another 8-10 miles. Technology is making the game
DIVOT Magazine
of golf easier and more enjoyable to play.”
With assistance from manufacturers’ representatives, Expo attendees can stop by and swing 2012
offerings from top club makers such as Ping, Callaway, Nike, Titleist, Cleveland, Taylor Made,
Mizuno, and Adams with many more brands being
added every day! This continues to be the biggest
three demo days that Rocky Mountain golfers will
have for the entire season. In addition, compete in
the longest drive contest while swinging your new
favorite clubs.
According to Lenny, “The driving range offers
golfers the opportunity to see and try a lot of new
product. If there’s a club you’re interested in,
chances are we’ll have it.”
Besides the fitting equipment, Lenny’s Golf is
again bringing a ton of inventory, close to $350,000,
nearly double of the inventory in 2011! Stopping at
the Denver Golf Expo gets you great deals and special buys on clubs (new and used), bags, pull carts
– and more!
“We have all kinds of deals on equipment and
gear that you can’t get anywhere else,” says Lenny.
“Of course, we’ll be highlighting some of the exciting new models, and attendees can be among the
first to try these new clubs out at our driving range
with 15 hitting stations.”
Lenny’s Golf is well-known for its philosophy of
the importance of fitting clubs, and with the additional retail space, Lenny says, “We will find the
right fit for you and your golf game. I’m a firm believer that today you can buy a golf game with
today’s golf equipment and technology – and we
will make sure that you leave the Expo with the
right equipment and the best deals.”
Armed with personal knowledge gained at the
Denver Golf Expo’s Demo Days Club Test and Driving Range, golfers are invited after the show to
check out Lenny’s Golf Shop‘s full line of clubs and
equipment, personalized service and custom fitting,
located at 2601 S Parker Rd - Aurora, CO or call 303369-5900. D

first annual Colorado Golf Summit where
PGA Professionals, Superintendents,
General Managers and Facility Owners gathered
to listen to PGA of America Senior Director Darrell
Crall explain the new Golf 2.0 initiative and how it
impacts our state.
What is Golf 2.0? It is a long range strategic
plan developed to substantially increase the number of golfers and the revenue generated from the
game. To accomplish this goal, the industry needs
to address barriers, such as time and cost and
their impact on player entry and retention. The
study points out clearly that “Golf needs to be more
welcoming,” according to Crall.

The World’s Finest Golf Destination?
Swing Into Scottsdale
Troon North Golf Club
s Scottsdale, Arizona really the world’s finest
golf destination? It’s a bold statement, but
this desert oasis has the numbers to back up
that claim…and given Scottsdale’s mild, warm winter temperatures (especially when compared to Colorado), it’s hard to argue with the facts.
To start with, there are 51 golf courses located
within Scottsdale's city limits, as well as 156 more
sprinkled across the “Valley of the Sun.” Many of
these courses are among the very best found not
only within the state but anywhere. For example,
Scottsdale is home to 13 of the "Top 25 golf courses in
Arizona" according to Golf Magazine's 2010 rankings.
Six of the city’s courses made Golf Magazine's 2010
"Top 100 You Can Play," and six of its resorts were
named among the "75 Best Golf Resorts" in the world
by Golf Digest.
I
DESERT CLASSICS
Among the most celebrated Scottsdale golf venues is Troon North Golf Club. Believe it or not, the
course now plays better than ever thanks to a recent
reconfiguration of the Monument and Pinnacle
Courses. Overseen by Tom Weiskopf, both tracks
were blended and re-sequenced to create new layouts with improved playability. As a result, in its "Top
DIVOT Magazine
100 Courses You Can Play" rankings, Golf Magazine
named the ‘new’ Pinnacle and Monument courses
No. 21 and No. 44 in the nation, respectively. The
courses were ranked No. 1 and No. 4 in Arizona, as
well. And Golfweek ranked Monument and Pinnacle
No. 2 and No. 9, respectively, in its 2011 "Best Courses
You Can Play in Arizona."
Undoubtedly, Scottsdale's most recognizable
club, TPC Scottsdale is a 36-hole jewel best known
as the host of the Waste Management Phoenix Open,
the most highly attended tournament on the PGA
TOUR circuit. The acclaimed Stadium Course gives
players the rare opportunity to walk in the footsteps
of PGA TOUR stars. However, in-the-know locals also
rave about TPC Scottsdale's lesser known but
equally scenic Champions Course, that offers one of
the best golf values in Arizona.
Likewise, Grayhawk Golf Club has developed a
reputation as one of Scottsdale's most stylish golf
clubs and one of the places to see and be seen in
Scottsdale. It is commonplace to encounter tour
players and other celebrities in Grayhawk’s Phil’s
Grill. And, the two courses, Talon and Raptor, are superstars in their own right. In fact, Grayhawk hosted

a variety of top-flight competitive events, including
the Andersen Consulting World Championship of
Golf, Williams World Challenge hosted by Tiger
Woods, Tommy Bahama Challenge and, of course,
the Frys.com Open, a PGA TOUR event held on the
Raptor Course 2007-2009.
Another of Scottsdale’s top golf venues is We-KoPa Golf Club. Hand-stitched into the McDowell
Mountains, We-Ko-Pa offers a desert golf experience like no other. Golfers are completely immersed
in the Sonoran Desert with no dwellings, roads or
even out-of-bounds markers to distract them from
the panoramic surroundings. Recently, We-Ko-Pa
took two of the top three spots in Golfweek's 2011
Best State-by-State ranking, with the Saguaro
Course taking the No. 1 spot and the Cholla Course
claiming spot No. 3.
BOURBON STEAK’s Lobster Potpie
tree-lined fairways with gently sloping contours and
sparkling water hazards highlighted by magnificent
mountain backdrops.
Obviously this is just a small sampling of the
courses Scottsdale has to offer. Plus, there’s more to
a golf destination than great courses, and this is
where Scottsdale really pulls ahead of the competition. Not only does the city boast some of the best
golf venues in the world, its dining, nightlife and entertainment options make it the perfect destination for
golf travelers looking for the total vacation package.
TRADITIONAL TRACKS
In addition to dramatic desert courses, Scottsdale
features several outstanding courses that provide a
traditional look and feel. McCormick Ranch Golf
Club offers 36 holes that unfold around sprawling
water hazards and along fairways of mature pine, eucalyptus and palm trees. Camelback Golf Club’s two
18-hole courses allow guests to play through lush
FOOD BEYOND THE CLUBHOUSE
Scottsdale has seen a celebrity chef invasion of
sorts in the past few years with notable names
opening high-end steakhouses in the city known for
its luxury cache. The first to plant his roots in
Scottsdale was two-time James Beard award-winner Michael Mina with BOURBON STEAK at the
Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, which delivers contemporary steakhouse cuisine with classic American side dishes like truffled mac and cheese. Hot
on Mina's heels was the notable Chef Laurent
Touroundel, acclaimed as a "Best New Chef" by
Food & Wine magazine, with BLT Steak at the JW
Marriott Camelback Inn. And rounding out the trio
is Jean-Georges Vongerichten who opened his
first-ever Arizona location, J&G Steakhouse at The
Phoenician. The menu is designed specifically for
Scottsdale and features premium meat and fish and
an extensive cocktail list.

For another option that blends mouth-watering
flavors with the rugged Southwest, check out Roaring Fork. Here, Old West recipes, like wood-grilled
beef tenderloin, are top items on the menu. Besides
being known for its great food, Roaring Fork is famous for its happy hour so you and your crew can
wash down the savory meals with tempting drinks
like the huckleberry margarita.
THE SIZZLING NIGHTLIFE SCENE
As the sun sets on the Sonoran Desert, it’s time to
play off the course, and downtown Scottsdale offers
myriad après golf hot spots with more than 50 bars
and nightclubs. There's nothing high-maintenance
about Dos Gringos, a casual neighborhood bar in
downtown Scottsdale where jeans and flip-flops are
encouraged. Another laid-back option, Rusty Spur
Saloon is housed in a building constructed in 1921 as
the original location of the Farmer's State Bank of
Scottsdale. For a more upscale evening, head a few
streets west to The Casablanca Lounge, Scottsdale’s
newest hot spot, where you'll find yourself caught in
between the past and future in an elegant cocktail
haven with the largest variety of alcohol behind any
bar in Scottsdale. Or find a dark corner at Kazimierz
world wine bar, a speakeasy that evokes the feeling
of a European wine cave. Tucked into Old Town
Scottsdale, this nightlife gem is easy to miss with the
entrance in the rear of the building.
RELAX AND RECOVER
Once you’ve finished fraternizing in Scottsdale’s
downtown district, begin anew with a day of pampering indulgences. The Spa at Four Seasons Resort
Scottsdale at Troon North is a relaxation hub offering
an extensive array of innovative spa treatments like the
Golfer's Massage. The treatment incorporates stretching techniques with the kneading of tight muscles with
warmed golf balls to alleviate tension and stiffness
while keeping golfers at the peak of their game.
Willow Stream - The Spa at Fairmont Scottsdale
Princess pays tribute to Arizona landscape and is
modeled after a hidden oasis deep in the Grand
Canyon called Havasupai. Willow Stream's MVP
Room is a relaxation lounge designed specifically for
men featuring plasma screens with wireless headsets, leather and wood décor, and sports magazines
and business journals.
OFF THE CART PATH
Adventure lovers can get their kicks at
Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve, which
is home to 16,000 acres of protected Sonoran Desert
in the heart of town where you can enjoy hiking, biking and horseback riding adventures.
And if you have the need for speed, check out
Octane Raceway, America's largest indoor kart
racing and entertainment venue offering everything
from high-speed European kart racing to rock
climbing, billiards, and a wide selection of arcade
games. The venue's state-of-the-art OSKAR timing
system places your scores on the televisions surrounding the track as well as prints out all of your
results including finishing place, best lap, average
lap and more.
With all that said, when you add ‘em up, it’s no
surprise that Scottsdale tops the charts as the
world’s finest golf destination.

Range Rover Sport
Supercharged
T
he Range Rover has been in production since the 1970’s and has always
been classified as a luxury vehicle. However, today’s Range Rover Sport is a true off
road SUV that feels just as comfortable on
the road as it does off. The Range Rover
has a body on frame construction, like a
truck, which makes it a very capable off
road vehicle.
The modern Range Rover is extremely luxurious with all of the latest technologies you would expect from
a luxury car. The interior is lined with premium soft-touch leather. It can seat five adults comfortably and is
equipped with the highest quality sound system and includes an in-dash 6 DVD system for the occupants to
watch movies. The front leather seats are heated and cooled and also have a massage function, which comes
in very handy after a long day on the golf course.
Under the hood is a supercharged 5.0 liter Ford V8 engine that produces 510 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and
461 pound feet of torque at 5,500 rpm. The power is delivered to all four wheels via a six speed automatic
transmission with a manual shift mode.
There are various Range Rover styles that can be ordered. There is the standard version which starts at
around $70,000, the next step up is the supercharged version which costs around $100,000, and an extremely
luxurious version that costs well over $125,000. For more information visit www.landrover.com
Infinity G37 Coupe
T
he Infinity G37 coupe is a sleek and seductive
performance bargain. While providing both
performance and luxury, it is not a track car. Instead,
it offers some of the same track car benifits but at a
non-track car price, and it’s still a lot of fun.
The Infinity G37 coupe is priced at $47,950 with
the manual transmission and $49,850 for an automatic. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, dualzone automatic climate control, 8-way power-adjustable front sport seats, keyless entry and starting, Bose
audio system with 9.3-gigbyte Music Box hard drive, XM satellite radio, USB port, automatic bi-xenon headlights, sunroof, navigation system, rearview camera, and much more.
Under the hood your will find a 3.7-liter V6 engine with 330 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. With a 6speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic with manual shift capability, the EPA fuel-economy ratings are 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway with the automatic and 17/25 with the manual.
The interior is sporty, with a quality feel. The leather-wrapped steering wheel feels good, and the leather
upholstery has an upscale feel. All of the controls are placed in a simple, easy-to-reach layout. The front
bucket seats fit the car's sporty character. The back seat is a little small but the front seats power forward to
allow decent access
All in all the Infinity G37 is a pleasure to drive and offers a great look and high performance feel at a very
attractive price. For more information visit www.infinitiusa.com.

14, are tailored for all skill levels from the child who
is just starting out to the more experienced player
looking to advance their game.
Campbell has focused his efforts on school systems in Arapahoe County including public schools
in the Cherry Creek, Littleton, Aurora, and Englewood school districts as well as private schools
looking to enhance their before and after-school
enrichment programs.
Campbell, who was born and raised locally in
Broomfield, comes to TGA with a BA in Psychology
from Arizona State University and an MA in Sports
Psychology from San Diego State University. Campbell, who worked in the corporate training industry
prior to joining TGA, and his staff of 8 TGA coaches,
love working with the kids and growing the game
of golf locally.
“I am truly excited to be a part of TGA and extremely proud to continue to offer this amazing program to the people of Arapahoe County,” said
Campbell. “The TGA program has proven to be very
successful in many other locations across the country and the same has been true in Arapahoe County.”
“I have always had a tremendous passion for
the game of golf and working with kids. I cherish
the opportunity to work with the area schools and
parents using golf as a vehicle to teach their kids
important character building skills while also enriching their lives by teaching them a lifelong
sport,” said Campbell.

Junior Golf
College Coaches are taking notice of players
in the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour
T
he Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour was
established in 2009 and has had the pleasure of witnessing many golfers grow as
people and as players. Many juniors have gone on
to pursue their golf endeavors at the collegiate
level.
“It is becoming a common occurrence for College Coaches to come watch players at our events.
RMJGT has built relationships with coaches
throughout the Western region. Coaches want to
see players participating in multiple tournaments,
so they can see a pattern, and scoring average.
When a coach inquires about a golfer they are not
only interested in their skill, but also that person’s
character. We really get to know the players, and
can make recommendations to coaches based on
our experience with them,” states Tracy Cologne
Tournament Director.
“I have been utilizing the Rocky Mountain Jun-
50
Expo Issue
ior Golf tour as a tool for recruiting. I talk to Tracy on
a regular basis. College coaches are a part of a
close network, and if a player is not the right fit for
my school, I can assist in getting them connected
with another school who may be,” said Tyler Kimball, Colorado School of Mines.
Nathaniel and Matthew Goddard are two such
players. Nathaniel recently shared this, “I want to
say ‘Thank You’ to this tour. Without it, Colorado
Christian University would not have discovered
me.” The Goddard twins were awarded scholarships to CCU.
If you are determined to achieve the same results
as the Goddard boys and countless others, joining
the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour is for you.

Inside The Leather
Is my belly too big for this putter?
By Jerry Walters
Divot Writer
O
ver the past few months, I’ve been asked
by countless golfers about the mass exodus from traditional length putters to
longer, anchored flat sticks. Well, they’ve been
around the game for years, but have never had so
much attention as they have near the end of 2011.
The first tour player I ever saw using a longer putter was Paul Azinger.
The current trend toward longer putters, whether
it’s belly length or chest putters, has been epidemic. The cause: Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Adam Scott, Michele Wie, Fred Couples,
Matt Kuchar and Bill Haas. The result: a more
consistent putting stroke.
Golf is a game of consistency. So, if you could become more consistent in the area which accounts
for nearly half the strokes, wouldn’t you want to at
least explore the phenomenon? If my hands are
given the opportunity to take the putter off plane,
it’s a given that they will. Anchored putting essentially brings the putter head right back to the
initial position, resulting in more consistency.
I’ve also fielded many requests recently to configure traditional length flat sticks into belly putters. While it might seem like a simple process,
here are the drawbacks: the head weight on traditional putters is around 350 grams and belly
putter heads are approximately 400 grams. Long
putters are even heftier, hovering near 500
grams. If you extend an old putter into belly putter length, you’ll find the weight is insufficient
and the putter head will feel too light. Certain putters can be made heavier, by adding a mixture of
tungsten powder and epoxy into a cavity in the
head. Those without a cavity simply cannot. Belly
putter and long putter shafts are also a heavier
52
Expo Issue
gauge than traditional putters to support the additional weight. So, even if you can make the
head heftier, the shaft, when extended, may have
a whippy feel to it.
If you’re considering fashioning your traditional
length putter or belly putter into a chest putter,
you can forget about that option. There are too
many negatives to even begin the process. The
weight of chest putters is another 100 grams more
than even the belly length models. That’s just the
beginning. The lie angle of the shaft in relation to
DIVOT Magazine
the head is the overriding factor which simply
can’t be overcome. Belly putters and standard
length putters are generally shafted at 71 degrees
(19 degrees off of a 90 degree angle), and long
putters are at a maximum of 80 degrees (USGA
Rules). In most cases, putters can’t be bent to accommodate the difference in the angles.
As for fitting both belly putters and long putters,
the process is simple. For belly putters, take your
normal stance over your conventional putter, remembering that in previous articles we addressed the necessity for having your eyes very
close to being over the top of the ball. From this
position, measure the distance from the butt end
of your putter to your belly. To be safe, add 1/2” to
the length.
For chest putters, stand up to a ball in the position that feels most comfortable, holding your
DIVOT Magazine
putter at address with your left thumb knuckle
(right-handed golfers) pressing against the
pocket in your sternum. Simply measure the distance from the sole of the putter to the floor. That
will be fairly close to the necessary length for
your long putter.
Remember that a change to a new putter style is
the same as any alteration in your set up or swing,
so there is a learning curve in both methods. Be
sure to spend additional time practicing before
taking your new putter to the course.
Jerry Walters is a putting instructor on the PGA
and Nationwide Tours, and currently teaches putting at the Trent Wearner Golf Academy. He can be
contacted at 303-645-8000 or jerry@ trentwearnergolf.com. He also is co-host of In The
Fairway, heard on 102.3 ESPN on Saturdays from

PORTUGAL:
Golfing the
Atlantic Coast
By Peter Hellman
DIVOT Contributing Writer
A
s a traveling golfer, I think of myself as
someone who has “been there, done that”
at a lot of golfable destinations. So, you
might find it surprising that Portugal was not on my
list. Fortunately for me, an invitation came my way
last year and in mid October I went to experience
what European golfers have been raving about for
years and we Americans know so little about. You
would think that the English run up to Scotland for
a golfer’s holiday whenever the urge hits them, but
even they get a bit weary of the cold and rain and
from time to time seek lusher fairways, warming
sunshine, good wine, better food and lower prices.
The easiest part of Portugal to reach from
England or any other part of the world is Lisbon, the
capital. I visited an area just 45 minutes west of the
city called the Estoril/Cascais Coast. This is not the
area of Portugal most golfers hear about. That’s the
Algarve, which is located in the extreme southern
part of the country. But to many who have visited
both regions, it’s the Estoril that wins out because
it has more to offer golfers and explorers.
I traveled with a group of fellow American golf
tour operators. It’s a congenial group who love the
game, are by no means great golfers (that certainly
includes me) but are keenly interested in finding great
golf experiences for their clients. The 45 minute drive
to our hotel actually took a bit longer than an hour.
Traffic around Lisbon is thick and the roads tend to be
small. Our hotel for our six night stay was the newly
built The Oitavos located just north of the town of
Cascais. It is an ultra-modern, Five Star, beautifully
located structure of 142 rooms with ocean views from
ample balconies. The Champalimaud family, our
hosts and owners of the land for three generations,

built and manage the hotel. But,
prior to it’s opening in
2010, they built what is to
my mind the finest golf course
(designed by Arthur Hills) in the region - Oitavos
Dunes. Golf Digest ranks it among the top 100
courses in the world. Though not located on the
water, the course sits on high rolling dunes that provide views over the Atlantic to the west and rugged
forested hills and mountains to the east. With so
much visual temptation around you, concentrating
on hitting the ball is difficult. After a serious lunch
at the modern club house, we headed out for a
quick round before dark. Though always tired after
a long overnight flight to Europe, I like to be physically active and avoid napping so that I can more
easily get on to the countries clock. A round of golf
always helps.
Though The Oitavos hotel and its golf course
were my favorites on this trip, there were other
excellent hotels and courses in the area. One of
the most interesting hotels was the Palacio Estoril.
Opened in 1930, it was the hub of espionage and
intrigue during WWII. Because Portugal was neutral, diplomats, spies and wealthy refugees and
celebrities congregated here and enjoyed Estoril’s
beaches, clubs and casinos. It is grand style and
popularity continues today. A smaller and less
grand hotel located directly on the water is the
Albatroz. Charming rooms in a somewhat funky
style command a primo piece of strand with great
views from virtually every room.
Hopefully you get the idea that the area has
many great accommodations properties to satisfy
virtually any taste (ultra-modern to classic old
world charm) and pocket book. But, I stray from the
subject – the subject of golf. The Palacio Hotel in
DIVOT

Magazine
Estoril owns and operates the Estoril Golfe Club,
which is one of the oldest in Portugal and designed
by the famous Scottish golf architect Mackenzie
Ross. Built on high forested hills above the town,
the course has many altitude changes and is unfortunately divided by a highway. A pedestrian bridge
links the first nine with second. Though a bit funky,
the course is worth a round and the relaxing original club house has plenty of atmospheres for an
after-round beer and sandwich.
A newer course on the way to Sintra (a world
heritage site and worth a visit) is the Penha Longa
Atlantic. The course and a short nine-hole are part
of an excellent modern resort built on the grounds
of a restored 16th century summer palace.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones and finished in
1992, the course works its way to commanding
high ground and funnels its way through forests of
pine before returning to the club house. I loved this
course and it is not because I scored well.
Other courses one should play in the area are:
Pestana Beloura, Belas Club de Campo and Club de
Golf Quinta da Marinha. These courses are modern,
have interesting layouts and enjoy easy access
from The Oitavos Hotel. On my next trip to Portugal,
I plan to add the Oeste Region to my itinerary. This
area of wine and sea is about 1 ½ hours north of
Estoril. Praia d’el Rey, a Marriott resort, has a magnificent course along a long beach known worldwide by surfers for its excellent waves. The course
boasts four holes along the beach with plenty of
sand dunes defining the lush fairways. There are
views of the Atlantic from virtually every hole. Other
courses in the area include Campo Real, Dom
Sucesso and the newly completed Royal Obidos.
Since I mentioned wine, I should probably tell
you more about it and the food in this part of
Portugal. Local wine is abundant, delicious and
inexpensive. This not to say that you can’t find
some very special wines to celebrate your hole-inone or some important date.
As you can well imagine, the Atlantic influences the menus of restaurants along the coast.
And as the top consumer of cod in the world, you
will find it prepared in ways you may have never
thought of. One of the best meals we had was in
what our host called a local’s restaurant – Mar do
Inferno. Perched on a high bluff over the Atlantic,
this seafood heaven was packed with diners
eagerly digging into shellfish of all kinds, cod (of
course) and some of the best tasting small lobsters called bruxas (witches) and large shrimp or
langoustines I have ever eaten.
The final reason for considering Portugal for
your next trip is value. Not only is the Euro favoring
dollar travelers again, but Portugal, like several
southern European countries is suffering economically. Government imposed austerity programs
have reduced wages by 10%, increased work hours
and raised taxes in order to deal with a deficit is
unsustainable. The affect of these measures is less
local demand for goods and services, which causes prices to fall and if you coupled that with the
weakening Euro, you’ll find Portugal may be your
best bet for a perfect golf experience in 2012

sets of tees ranging from 5,400 yards to almost 7,000 yards, with silk smooth greens that are quick and roll true.
Every hole offers something different. Some have elevated tees, some require a cut off the tee or a draw, and some
require a little more course management because of the water hazards or water fall that comes into play.
On a special note we don’t do a spring aerification. If you’re ready for the Four Winds challenge, and you don’t want
to play a six hour round on the weekends please come see us for a great round or two. Please call ahead for a tee

the night, then wake up play a quick 18 holes and hit the road. If you come back within 14 days and you bring a
foursome you get one free green fee. (This is a special for any day of the year)

TOO OLD TO PUTT!?
By Tom Olkowski, Ph.D.
Divot Contributing Writer
D
uring a television broadcast midway through
last season, while Gary McCord and Peter
Kostis chatted about Ernie Els’ putting woes,
McCord made the comment that “no one improves
their putting after age 40.” Despite changing grips,
putters, and coaches, the putting skills of the over-40
crowd are destined for deterioration. Now I usually respect Gary’s observations but this time I think he’s
dead wrong simply because he doesn’t know the real
secrets to improved putting after age 40.
Naturally the very first “secret” you’ll hear from a
teaching pro is to practice more. Make a circle of 50
balls about two feet around the hole, sink them all
then widen the circle by two feet and keep at it until
you can sink 40-footers from anywhere on the green.
Another trick is to sink 200 straight putts without a
miss. If you miss one, you have to start over and
make them all before going home to dinner. This
strategy is deadly boring and may not necessarily improve your putting but it will definitely help you lose
weight. And what the pros don’t tell you about practicing putting is that their caddies retrieve all their
putts and gently roll them back to their man so he
never has to bend over when he practices. By the
way if you want to complicate matters, try changing
your grip, stance and stroke all at the same time
while you practice.
A second so-called “secret” is to improve your
chipping. According to a recent issue of Golf magazine, you will automatically decrease your number of
putts per round if you always chip to within five feet of
the cup. Although the advice is excellent, it presents
a few new issues like needing a whole new set of secrets to improve your chipping and being able to sink
five foot putts. If we could all do that consistently, we
wouldn’t need any other secrets.
Another rarely mentioned secret to improved putting that might seem paradoxical is to avoid Greensin-Regulation at all costs. Instead, put your approach
shot as close to the edge of the green as possible,
then chip as close to the hole as possible – the end
DIVOT Magazine
800-926-4386
result will ultimately be fewer putts. To prove my point
Bubba Watson was #1 in GIRs with 74.02% per round
early last year but only 134th in putting. Unfortunately
this secret only works if you ignore the fact that the
pros putting averages are solely calculated on holes
on which they make GIRs.
The favored secret of most casual golfers is the old
standby – simply buy a new putter, usually the more
expensive the better. A new putter is absolutely guaranteed to improve your putting average for at least
three weeks after you buy it. Later as it begins to let
you down, it can join the other 13 putters you now
have in your garage. If you can’t afford a new putter,
have your old one regripped. It’s far cheaper and it
works almost as well but the improvement won’t last
as long as it does with a new putter.
The final and perhaps most important secret to improved putting is to play upon the sportsmanship and
comradery of your foursome and develop a more lenient attitude toward conceded putts. While purists
may frown on the practice, keep in mind that conceded putts are a vital element of match play and they
speed up the game immensely. If any of your playing
partners object, just remind them of the most famous
conceded putt in golf history when Jack Nicklaus conceded the final putt on the 18th hole to halve his match
with Tony Jacklin in the 1969 Ryder Cup. It is still
viewed as one of the grandest examples of golf
sportsmanship ever.
A few words of caution however, if you do employ
this “secret” to improve your putting do not carry it to
the extremes exhibited in the Bud Light commercials
several years ago and never request a concession
from your buddies. If they fail to give you a putt you
think is makeable, you can always screw them back
later with money on the line.
Finally, if all of these putting secrets fail, you can always resort to prayer. My mother tells me that St. Jude
is the patron saint of long putts and lost causes.
Tom Olkowski, Ph.D., is a retired clinical psychologist in Denver who personally apologizes to
the putters he relegates to the garage just in case
he needs to use them again and he always prays
to St. Jude. D

Club Fitting
How good do you want to be?
By Dan Weitzel
Divot Contributing Writer
Y
You’ve read stories about what properly fitted
clubs can do for your game, so why are you
(like most golfers) playing those “off the rack”
clubs? Fittings have largely been focused on drivers,
but playing your best will only happen if the entire set is
properly fit. As you plan to improve your game in 2012,
here are thoughts on how to address each of the major
segments in your golf bag:
• Driver – High usage per round and driver distances
make driver fittings crucial for any golfer. Ability, swing
speed, tempo and strength are all considerations in fitting the player with the right head shape, loft, flex, weight,
and length. I recently did a fitting on a scratch player who
gained 25 yards by achieving the proper combination of
launch angle and ball spin. You may not gain 25 yards, but
a properly fitted driver will help any golfer.
• Fairways – Is your 3W hard to get off the ground or is
your 5W just a bit short? Is your face depth right for the
conditions in which you normally play? For many
golfers, a single fairway club – a 4W? – is the best
choice. It’s easier to master one club and improve consistency, and you’ll see only a minor impact on distance. A 4W also makes room for one other hybrid or
wedge, and it saves money!
• Hybrids – A shape that looks good and lofts that evenly
fill the gap between fairways and irons are primary considerations. Some hybrids are now available with a
bendable hosel, allowing the lie angle to fit you perfectly.
Finally, I frequently find that hybrids are poorly matched
to the set in terms of flex, swingweight and shaft weight.
• Irons/Wedges – Head shape, forgiveness, and lie/loft
angles are important factors in choosing irons. Do you
know the impact of a poor lie angle? Do your wedges
have the right bounce angle for your game? Are the
grooves in good shape? Do you have a wedge “set”
that is well matched and also matches up well with
your iron set? I see pitching and gap wedges all the
time that are entirely different even though they are just
one club apart and are intended for similar use.
• Putter – Are the loft and lie of your putter a good fit for
your stroke? Length and weight? Grip size? Have you
DIVOT Magazine
tried a chest or belly putter and given it the right amount
of practice time? Putters are typically very poorly
matched to their owners and this one club accounts for
nearly half of your strokes.
• Shafts – Shafts are the most critical element of club
fitting. Are your shafts the proper flex and weight for
you? Do they have the right weight progression
throughout the set? Are the flexes well matched? If you
have mismatched shafts, you will unknowingly vary
your swing to fit the club.
• Grips – Use the proper size – larger grips promote a
fade and smaller grips a draw. Beyond that, pick the
feel you like and keep them in good condition. And, grip
all your clubs the same! It sounds simple, but most of
the sets I analyze have multiple grip types. Grips are the
only part of the club you come into contact with – make
them right for you!
Most golfers rely on manufacturer designations to
match their sets, but there are virtually no industry standards when it comes to length, flex, swingweight, loft,
etc. And don’t assume that all clubs from a particular
manufacturer will match up well either. Your objective
should be to have a well matched set in each of these
areas:
• Shaft weights should gradually increase from the
driver through the wedges.
• Actual flex values (not the shaft label) should be consistent or perhaps be flighted, stiffer as the clubs get
shorter.
• Swingweights should either be consistent or gradually increase.
• Lofts should provide the best distance coverage possible from your 13 clubs. Don’t leave large gaps and adjust your swing as a result.
Take your set to a clubfitter who can provide you a
complete analysis of these elements and you will likely
be surprised. The cost of doing it right is not as high as
what you might imagine – there are often inexpensive
ways to fix what you already have.
Be as good as you want to be in 2012!
