After moving his restaurant Tilia from Vintl to his home town of Toblach in 2005,
Chris Oberhammer now produces top-class French cuisine in the park of the
Cultural Centre at Grand Hotel Dobbiaco. The creations of this student of Alain
Ducasse have been awarded a Michelin star. Oberhammer’s motto: simplicity and
respect. Inspired by his years on the Côte d’Azur, he attaches great importance to
unadulterated taste and the use of regional and seasonal products.

Company founder Stefan Gruber makes his delicious fruity products based on
traditional housewives’ recipes. He produced his very first marmalade from
self-grown fruit in 1997. The company now offers biologically certified fruit spreads,
chutneys, fruit syrups, preserved fruits and smoothies made at its modern production
facilities in Pragsertal. The delicious spreads have a fruit content of 70% and are
made without the addition of colouring agents or preservatives.

The magnificently located lake Pragser Wildsee is only about 5 km away.

Reinhold Messner’s project Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) provides a fascinating
insight into the myth of the mountains. The MMM Ripa in Schloss Bruneck opened in
July 2011 and is the most recent of five museums. The main focus is on the lives of
mountain peoples in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. As visitors pass through
the museum they encounter the unfamiliar cultures of the Massai, Indios and Tuareg
and can immerse themselves in the day-to-day lives of those whose living environment
is a mountain landscape.

This is one of the five most outstanding restaurants in South Tyrol. The modern
South Tyrolean cuisine and the selection of over 500 top-quality wines led to the
Baumgartner brothers receiving two Gault Millau toques and a Guide Michelin star.
The veranda is reminiscent of early 20th century Tyrol, being made of traditional
Swiss pine according to a historical design. The restaurant’s parlour rooms feature
rustic-style wood panelling. In winter, an open fire crackles away in the piano bar.

This company run by the Niederkofler family has distilled pine oil ever since 1912.
More than 70 medicinal and seasoning herbs are grown in a herb garden and the
surrounding meadows to make essential oils, tinctures and herbal teas. The healing
oils are extracted from the herbs in the distillery by means of water vapour.
The Niederkoflers pay particular attention to organic cultivation in harmony with
nature as well as careful harvesting according to the Maria Thun lunar calendar.

Meinrad Leitner grinds his flour at South Tyrol’s last remaining small-scale mill.
He learned his trade from his father, who was himself the fourth generation to run
the inconspicuous little mill in Florenzo. The mechanical grinders are set in motion
by a water-powered turbine. After up to fourteen grinding runs, the flour trickles in
a fine dust through the last silken sieve. With a little luck, the little door to the store
will open and the miller will invite visitors to take a tour of this gem.

There are 30,000 Ladins still living in South Tyrol today. Their language is the
oldest in the region. The unique coexistence of mankind with the mighty yet
fragile mountain landscape is based on long-established traditions and customs.
This museum in the centuries-old tower presents the culture, history, language and
archaeology of the region through interactive stations. It tells of the close relationship
between the South Tyrolean landscapes and the tradition-steeped Ladin lifestyle.

Small, rustic cheese wheels are laid out in neat rows on the wooden boards in the
centuries-old cellars of the cheese dairy. Built in 1576, the farm building sits idyllically
above the green mountain pastures. The Crazzolara family has run a dairy farm here for
generations. A few years ago they discovered a passion for cheese production and were
quick to take their place among the leading exponents of this delicate art. They only use
raw full cream milk for their cheeses. Award-winning cheeses for perfect enjoyment.

The restaurant was opened in 1996 as a small section of the pizzeria in the Hotel Spa
Rosa Alpina. Today the pizzeria is long gone. Chef Norbert Niederkofler remains, however,
his creations having been awarded two Michelin stars and three toques by Gault Millau
South Tyrol. Fillet of beef in salt crust with mountain hay or risotto with Brittany lobster,
green apple and fried mortadella are savoured by guests at a fireside table or with a view
of the kitchen table.

5 Torri and Sasso di Stria. These scenes of bitter fighting between Italians and Austrians
were carefully restored and transformed into an impressive historical record. The result is
Italy’s largest open-air museum on the subject of the First World War. The museum grounds
cover a radius of five kilometres and make for a fascinating walk in the Dolomites.
